Not only that, but when the outbreak happened, Joel was gone 3 hours to get his brother out of jail. If his brother hadn't been in jail, he wouldn't have had to go get him and then come all the way back to get Sarah. They could've been long gone by the time it really exploded or at least Sarah wouldn't have come face to face with the soldier. A 3h head start would've made a difference.

Marlon and Florence in the opening scene are another iteration of Bill and Frank: a loving couple that survived by focusing inward and isolating.
The Depeche Mode song from the ending of episode 1 is the closing song here. It's performed by Craig Mazin's daughter...he said because this episode focused on fathers and daughters he wanted to tie that in by including his own daughter.

I'd agree most of the time so far I'm the show, but that last university section needed more action and tension, even if it was a fight with just the 4 raiders, with Ellie still having to take Joel to the horse in the end it would have sold the ending of the episode better to me. As it stands, the university portion is the first part of the show that I felt was a downgrade from the game, wasn't bad by any means, just couldn't capture the same feelings from the game section to me, episode was still amazing tho.

To be fair, unless you've had a panic attack, or been in close proximity to someone who has, it's not actually obvious that that's what's going on. Combined with Joel being 56, and having lived a hell of a hard life, it's not an unreasonable assumption to make.
For myself, I would probably not have recognized it if I hadn't had a few panic attacks myself, so...there's that.

    @Nerdy Nightly,
29:20 Joel's 56. I thought we're seeing a softer side of Joel because we're going to see the side of Joel that Robert was afraid of and the one Marlene entrusted Ellie too. We've gotten glimpses of that man, but now that Joel's heart has opened up and he's gotten attached, fear has crept in--he has something to lose! And now that he's on the brink of death, that feeling is going to intensify, for the both of them. We're about to learn what they both mean to each other, and I don't feel sorry for anyone ready to test them.
The last three episodes of this season are going to be WILD! I cannot wait to see them. Let's go!
PS: regarding the menstrual cup, most men didn't know what it was--half of the reactors I watched thought it was some form of contraceptive! I thought it was pretty f'ed up that they thought it a town of three hundred would give a 14 year old girl traveling with a 56 year old man contraceptives and call it a day. WTF?! I'm surprised more people (mostly men) didn't know what that cup Ellie was holding is. Do schools not talk about tampons, pads and the like at schools?

  • @TomTomson81
    @TomTomson81 Рік тому +27

There is a reason why Henry is shown again at the beginning. That was for the fans, because that's exactly how the cut had been made in the game. One shot, then black, then dam.
The reason why Joel doesn't teach Ellie much or let her do it things is that she wouldn't be cargo anymore. Such things create a mutual connection that Joel did not want until then. He doesn't want to give her the option to take care of him. Just like Sarah did back then. I mean she did the housekeeping, made sure he wore his shirt the right way around ect.
It costs overcoming to leave something stuck in your body that you do not want to have and does not belong there. The head must remain clear and you must be aware of what is happening to you. The scene is kept very realistic, also as far that the injury is not immediately noticed. Anyone who has ever severed a finger on a circular saw knows what I'm talking about.
Maria to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust."
Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series.
Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon."
This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his.
Ellie drank from Joel's liquor and it was "STILL gross". That was a callback to the DLC.
Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will properly get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback (Game DLC).
This episode was a feast for everyone who played Part 2. we met Dina, properly Jessie, Shimmer, Bison Bar, sheep, kids playing snowball, Astronauts, Jackson see from the inside. Simply fantastic.
The campfire scene was not in the game, but was originally supposed to be included. Druckman said he can now finally show more through the series than was possible in the game.
Actually, Piedro is the support actor for Bella. Because it's all about Ellie. The story is basically told from their point of view. And even before Ellie, Sarah and not Joel was in focus.
This is underlined by an interesting feature that real "brutality" is only shown to us when Ellie sees it. We see Joel beating the soldier to death in episode 1 because Ellie is there and sees it. Ellie tortures and kills the stalker in episode 3. We see Joel's sniper kills because Ellie sees them. We see Henry's death, Sam being shot and Kathleen's death. We see the broken neck in this episode. With all other kills (Old Sniper, Bryan) you only hear it because the camera is focused on Ellie while she doesn't see these killings herself.

Getting older isn't fun, but right now it beats the only available alternative. 😛
Joel's not having a heart-attack, at least, not in the "cardiac arrest," meaning of the word.
He's having debilitating anxiety attacks, that verge on panic.
All of his time spent with Ellie has started to unlock fear and pain he's suppressed for 20 years.

I imagine when Joel talks to Tommy about his dreams that it's most likely memories of Sarah that he relives; and in a world such as theirs even good dreams have become nightmares for Joel because when he wakes he's instantly reminded that Sarah isn't there and why, which speaks to his line " all I know is when I wake up... I've lost something." Life truly did stop for Joel about the same time his wrist watch stopped.😔

His following words may be about her, but it makes more sense that he's dreaming about Sarah. This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together.
Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

Joel did the right thing in pulling the bat out. The only reason we shouldn't do it is, because in a hospital they can give you a blood transfusion to replace the bloodoss and close the wound to minimize the bloodloss. The chances for Joel to find a hospital with doctors, nurses and blood transfusion are slim. So if he bleeds now or later doesn't make a difference and movements with an object in a wound has the risks to do more damage.

You said you were not certain how this played out in teh game, so here's my thoughts (after playing the game several times). They're delving a lot deeper into Joel's mental state in this series (vs game Joel) and I really like the way they have done it. It's not ironic that Joel's "alpha male and protector" role is constantly challenged by what HE thinks are failures, when in fact, those "failures" were always outside of his control. Tommy getting arrested, Sarah getting injured in an unforeseeable accident, Sarah basically getting killed in his arms, at the hands of an armed man while Joel was unarmed, Tess getting beaten up while Joel was not around to protect her, Tess getting bitten while separated from him, Sam getting bitten while Joel was occupied protecting Ellie, Henry killing Sam, and ultimately himself, with Joel's gun which Henry grabbed before Joel could reach it. All of these "failures" were actually not solely his but put dents into his self worth as a protector, adding to his PTSD, further building his self doubt.
In the game, Joel IS a broken and walled off, but it's more of an emotional block leaving behind a brutal man that is cold and calculated rather than full of self doubt. It's what makes his bonding to Ellie all the more poignant and effective as the his journey across the emotional landscape he has to travel in the game to finally get to accepting his bond with Ellie is a longer and harder. It's hard to visually represent that in a film or TV show, so introducing the hearing loss (something not in the game) PTSD and anxiety attacks, followed up by his conversation with the Tommy, the one person he truly trusts, accomplishes this. Have to give a big head nod to both Pascal and Bella for bring that to life on screen.
As to removing a lot of the missions or encounters from TV version, in the game, those encounters while the core of the "gameplay" are not core to the story. They help the player to fully immerse in the game, and thus the story. Adding more of the encounters to the TV show would give the gamers a bit of added excitement , but that would not necessarily translate into immersion, story wise. They really do not add as much to the overall experience of "watching" as they do to "playing". It's the difference between first person playing immersion versus third person watching immersion.

I too had only heard of the “Diva cup” sometime in the last decade or so. So, I looked it up, (apparently other people had as well because some of the first Google results were articles specifically about that scene,) and what I found in Wikipedia blew my mind.
From the “History” section on the Menstrual Cup page, “The first version of what we would now call a menstrual cup was a rubber sack attached to a rubber ring created by S.L. Hockert in 1867, which was patented in the United States.[43] An early version of a bullet-shaped menstrual cup was patented in 1932, by the midwifery group of McGlasson and Perkins.” I assumed it probably went way back, but I was a little surprised by those dates.

I like that the infected and even random raider parties are basically environmental hazards. It isn't a grand battle to be engaged in, it is something to be avoided so you don't get caught out. The meat of teh game and the show is really the story of that relationship between Joel and Ellie. If the story wasn't tight and engaging in either medium we wouldn't care so much.
Joel's panic attacks were so well done they made me cry all by themselves. The moment I saw him get the physical symptoms of them I was wrecked because we know Joel so well, the anxiety that is driving the panic is attacks is so apparent and Ellie doesn't have the background so I feel for her fear seeing him go through and not knowing what's up or how to help him. Them I am feeling scared for her. It also does a lot to inform what is coming. By the end of the game I was so in love with the characters that making sure they won every encounter was like taking care of them. By the end I just feel like a voice in Joel's head and we would do anything for this kid. great episode.

"Last of Us" and "The Expanse" are some of the best examples of successful adaptations from one medium to another-the producers/showrunners understood what made the source so special and meaningful, and they held onto that while making the changes necessary for the new medium (i.e. television).

So appreciate that you guys get why Joel was upset with Tommy and had such conflicting feelings. No calls meant no calls from the beginning, probably long before Tommy and Maria even made out. It's been 3 1/2 months since the start and he's already been out of communication a month or two. So in 5-6 months Tommy dropped Joel, got married, and got her pregnant. And he's a guy that has been hopping from group to group looking to feel like a hero. Sure maybe he's changed now... but he also looked not super happy to find out he's a communist now so who knows.

I had like the same reaction to the opening scene Nerdy! Like we're EVER going to forget that scene....holy shit! The Native American actors were the best, I love those actors! Okay, I'm gonna be honest with you guys, you look at least 20 yrs younger than me, I'm 58. Yes, after 30, the body starts to break down....sorry. It's part of life. I was a runner in my youth & I need both knees replaced. Of course, I'm overweight too, have had 4 kids & have become lazy but still. Take care of yourselves. Canada is so gorgeous! The dog scared the shit outta me lol I love the brothers so much! Joel was totally having panic attacks guys, similar symptoms. He has major PTSD & never really dealt with Sarah's death so.....yeah, there no fun. If Pedro does not at least be nominated for an Emmy, there is no justice in the world. That scene with the brothers talking & Pedro's crying, killed me! The Last of Us awards....perfect!!

believe they missed out on a big line Ellie could've said... oh course it's a standard line thing like this scene generates, but it's generated 'because' it brings people into the show to make them even more invested... the line? "Joel, I need you" (with a few tears falling or streaming down cheeks, instead of hanging off eyelashes) -- good episode
spoiler part: Ellie didn't need to say it in the game because of how the previous game scenes and of the inflection in the character's lines in this similar scene

The old Native American guy reminds me of my uncle, 80 and still chopping wood and climbing tree stands. The woman is far from my aunt though, she would have whupped Joel's ass. Ellie is amazing with that sas. The panic attacks Joel has are great. "Used to be fit and strong..." me too, me too. Ever since stopped playing sports my body just keeps falling apart little by little lol. As Clarkson's Farm has shown us, neither sheep nor cows are easy lol. I didn't expect to find Tommy yet. Again, Ellie! If the infected are so rare out there, how serious do the kids take them? Even Ellie who lived surrounded by them and had experiendes, didnt really take them too seriously at first. Pedro is amazing, finally being able to open up to his brother and everything spewing out. Even as Mando with a helmet on the whole time he can emote. While it seems that Ellie has good trigger discipline, it annoys me that she points with the gun lol. Don't worry, Grogu is going to fly in to heal Mand- I mean Joel. A stab to the gut is one of the worst places, especially without medical training and supplies. I think they made the correct choice of telling story over showing gameplay.

Yes, they understood the best part of the game was the human characters and thier stories and interactions, and that is what they've focused on. If only they had done that for the movie for that other Naughty Dog game series (seriously? Mark Wahlberg as Sully?)
