as a person who comes from 6 string into the bass world...i really appreciate your explanation of things. I love your channel and what you are doing. thank you
I'm spying on bass channels since I'm learning the piano (left hand technique is important) but also the tenor and baritone ukulele. I love watching bass lessons since a bass player can make or break a band. I have never seen this explained like this, so simple and effective. Merci beaucoup. I've subbed to your channel.
Excellent thought-provoking video. The guitar F shape comes nicely over to the Bass and moves up and down the neck. The open A and D strings plus the 11th fret of the G string produces a Major D chord (root 3rd 5th). 10th fret is D minor. It's difficult to include the E string in anything. 🙂
You are such a good teacher. I sometimes get a young person coming to me "teach me! I say "go to Ryan's you tube site, she explains the patterns and it's mathematics." Not cold mathematics. I mostly learned from live experience. Textures. Instinct. Inteaction between rhythm and melody. That's what Bass players do, whether Duck Dunn, John Deacon, George Porter, Dee Murray, Billy Cox, etc...This "old dog" always learns new tricks from your site. Much fun! Thank you.
I’m new to your channel. I am 5 minutes in one of your lessons and am hooked! Bravo to you and the simple yet explicit manner of teaching!!! I am a beginner when it comes to music theory. Looking forward to the journey.
Herbie Flowers. Yay! Played both the electric and acoustic Bass because he wanted to get paid twice for the session. Played on "Rock On" by David Essex and many other studio tracks (early Bowie, etc). UA-cam video interview with demonstration...
@@lilmelvin11 Oh really cool! Im checking it out. Its the slide of that maj 10th a 4th that sounded cool on that! I hadnt realized what great musicians Reed had until I saw some of the live stuff in the 70s he was doing.
very interesting with a really calm presentation style. I have very limited abilities and very little musical knowledge or ability but i do rock the blues etc i bought a Harley Benton VI as I had a Fender VI back in the day And I bought it for fun and not to try to be a lead guitarist and not try to play bar chords. however, for fun I would like to get more use out of it by playing chords and I don't mean just chords with two notes But whatever I do sounds awful. that might well relate to lack of ability 🤣🤣🤣 there are videos out there but I like your style. do have anything or anything planned on chords on This type of Bass and clearly I don't mean a six-string bass like a skateboard 🤣 even simple chords such as E A and D rumble on with the open strings? apart from my lack of ability, do you think it relates to the amp and speakers and somehow getting a crisp sound rather than a deep bass sound? Thanks for reading this and I'll have a look at your other videos 🎸🎸🎸
It's quite a challenge to play "full chords" on a bass, mainly because the notes are so low that they get muddy and don't have definition. That's why 10ths are so common. It spreads the voices out enough and uses a lower root with the higher third... just the right amount of harmonic information to provide what's necessary. It's less about the amp and speakers and more about what this instrument is best at doing (ie: playing individual notes or not-too-complicated chords).
You need three notes minimum to voice a chord. You can use two notes to imply the sound of a chord, but it’s not considered a chord. It’s a double stop.

Nice and simple, yet somehow creative exercise! 🙂
That's a cool lesson that wouldn't have occurred to me as a guitar player who is trying to learn bass stuff
Happy ice cream......sad ice cream....good way to put it.
Love that.
The ice cream illustration is awesome! Never thought of it like that but it’s effective 🤙
Excellent, excellent explanations!! Please keep it going!
Great lesson. Thanks again and happy new year to you and family from Sweden.

Thanks so much for this video I really wanted to know how play chords on my bass❤

Mesmerizing and simple, you made that posible! Appreciated! Thanks for sharing your talent and your knowledge.
You are so welcome!
Such an awesome lesson. I really appreciate how you break things down into understandable bites of ice cream:)
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Nice explanation. Thanks, Ryan!
Thanks so much, Bill!

Thanks so much for being here and for your kind words!
It always blows my mind how a 1/2 step difference totally changes the essence of a chord. Love your channel. Cheers!
Glad you enjoy it!
Play a half step off key and it will definitely blow. 😄
@@BWater-yq3jx Lol! 😆
I always think of take a walk on the wild side Lou Reed with the tenths on the bass!

Kings of tough to follow with seeing exactly what strings you're hitting and plucking. Guess I'm looking for the tabs
I've got tab/notation for all of my lessons on my Patreon page! Head over there to support this channel and get all of the goodies!

Can you do a video on how to play the baseline to the song "I'm the man by Aloe Blacc? can't find it anywhere.
Thank you.
What brand of strings are those?
Also (Plz) what kind of compressor are you using?
I've got D'Addario EXL170s on this bass. And no compressor, just straight into the amp :-)
Very nice teaching, sweet and smooth, i think i have a crush on you.
It’s not a chord. It’s a double stop.
Which is a chord.
You need three notes minimum to voice a chord. You can use two notes to imply the sound of a chord, but it’s not considered a chord. It’s a double stop.
We do have chords based upon two notes, commonly referred to as "dyads." Power chords (just using the root and fifth) is another good example.
A tenth is not a chord. It's an interval.
A tenth is indeed an interval, but most players also use it to refer to this particular chord.
