I started playing bass in the summer of '78. I remember sometime in the first year trying to convince my teacher that sometimes dropping to the fifth below the root sounded better than going up. I'm sure it was because it was easier for me to finger at that point, but thanks for helping me win that argument 46 years later!
I love the methodical way you explain things. An inspiring lesson that has given me new ideas to explore the basic theory that I already know. Thankyou.
Thanks you for this lesson because this is exactly what I’m looking for. I’m only a hobby, know-nothing amateur bassist. I don't need to play exactly what’s on the record and some of the best bass lines I’ve listened to recently are what are termed, ‘personal interpretations’ and they’re great! Ryan you know the next chapter of this approach is to take a song that everyone knows and produce an original alternative bass part. Only an idea and feel free to put in the bin if you want we’ll still be friends.
A Lightning bulb moment for bass line building, using the instrument’s range, using rhythm change, and up/down positions to provide interesting, colourful bass lines. Best video on this topic that I have found. Thank you very much Ryan.
Appreciate your focus on listening to what we're playing as we play, rather than just moving from one thing to the next mechanically. When I finally got over my shyness and started singing, my bass playing changed a lot, I started thinking much more melodically and less mechanically.
I keep coming back to this video because the bass line is just so good: it simply says everything about the emotion the instrument is able to convey. I’m determined to learn it and just play it as a stand-alone piece to friends and family.
As my bass playing and fretboard knowledge has expanded further these past months, this video was very timely. It’s made me rethink and find new ways to play bass lines on both familiar songs and my own. As always, clearly and effectively presented. Thank you!
Reading all the comments, I concur! How you explained this was the exact way one creates a bassline... bit by bit and adding more interest. It's nice that I now, finally, know my theory and fretboard. This just added a nice piece of the puzzle for the rhythm part of my knowledge. This is definitely a video to bookmark!
This is a great video thanks for doing it. I'm pretty new to the bass and have agreed (rashly perhaps) to be the bass player for our local ukulele group. This and the country style ones you have made will be very helpful. Just bought your book to enjoy as well. Thanks again Ryan.
Glad you dug this video! And yes, I do quite a bit of session work. I've got a playlist on Spotify that features a lot of it: open.spotify.com/playlist/2WllXG3Nyra1jV8uwhSnR0?si=800e151aec6841a4
@@RyanMadoraMusic I randomly went down the list and listened to something from each artist. You've played on really good songs. I'm not a bass player, but I really like what you add to each song, and how your approach varies.

This is a really cool lesson, the sound, tone and feel are great! What bass is all about!
Thank you Madora!

Great to hear!
Ryan, this is one of the best explanations of bass line creation that I've come across. Well done.
I’m glad you found it helpful!

Great video
Thanks Ryan for this very useful lesson! Which option should I select on your patreon page to get the notation of this lesson? 🙏🏻
Thanks for asking! Any paid level will get you the tab/notation, so whatever you feel comfortable giving and supporting.
I'm not a bass player, but I found this fascinating. Have you ever done any session work?
