I’m going to your Patreon. I seriously owe you. I’ve gotten so much better in just a few months watching your technique videos than the last 25 years without. I’m playing things i thought I couldn’t play before. I am a pretty decent metal bassist but I’ve confidently added so many unorthodox techniques to my metal playing thanks to this channel. You are a killer instructor

Man, double-thumb has been something I have severely struggled with like seriously nothing worked but this exercise is just amazing! I feel for once I'm actually getting somewhere with and and can start incorporating it into my slap bass.
Forgot my pick at rehearsal the other day playing punk music and seriously thought now would be a good time to know how to double-thumb FAST 🤣

Dude, this is one of the best tutorials ever. Seriously, I regret that I already made a slap video for my ig. The progress is amazing, subscribed on 2 accounts. Thank you so much for this: )

Cool. Can't wait to practice more in about a week. After your Classical Thump lesson, I ended up getting a blood blister from double thumbing.

After having tried it another day before and realizing today, that you jump from the 5th fret on the E-String to the 1st fret on the A-String on Exercise 3, I finally got through it almost perfect (couldn't hear myself that good in the last part because I'm not plugged in and listen to the video with over ears) and I have to say it's somehow addicting (Which is nothing new for me because I always found playing slap bass a bit addicting. I just realized it again because i didn't even plan to do do the 4 tries I did today.).
However, nice video and keep going, I love you videos :3
Also, I love the fact that that exercise is in a harmonic minor scale

To really make double thumbing feel natural, try playing basslines originally played with a pick with just your thumb! The up and down picks transfer over very nicely. It's a great way to practice it in a musical setting besides running exercises. If you want to take things to the next level try choosing any bassline and slap it double thumbing, double plucking and hammer-ons. if Marcus Miller can slap Teen Town then there's a very good chance your favourite basslines can be too.

Wow I bailed only at the last (fastest) repetition. I realized that I tend to move the thumb only and not the whole wrist when it gets faster though. The pentatonic exercise sounds nice but I will have to learn the pattern. It was nice to be jamming to this tonight !

Great progression of difficulty with these exercises!
One thing I'm struggling when double thumbing is muting the strings above the thumb efficiently, especially when I'm on the G-string. I tried the descending major pattern in Classical Thump on said string, but couldn't figure out how to evenly double thumb while muting everything else cleanly. Any tips? Thanks in advance!

Victor Wooten developed this technique and I quote “ to be able play Stanley Clark riffs “ ya see there are a bunch of us bass players who’ve been paying attention before you were born. You should really do a deep history on the bass and its influences. So when you speak you know exactly what you are talking about. And to make sure the double thumb stroke . Victor didn’t develop the pop technique but for sure took it to a whole new level. Victor pop on brother . One of the coolest bass players you’ll ever meet 😎🎸

whats really helping me learn double thump recently is learning Gamma Knife by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and playing it with my thumb instead of a pick, its a bit more fun than the first couple of exercises lmao

I think practice drills like these are boring and take the fun away from playing bass. Instead, I like to learn a song that uses the technique that I want to learn. For example, to learn double thumping, you can practice victor wooten’s classical thump in slow motion and gradually build up speed to learn double thumping in a more musical way. That imo is a more fun way to learn bass.

I’m currently learning the bass intro to Victa and I just got to say that there are so many different ways to play it that are almost the right speed but still not fast enough however learning the different variations of it has helped me almost get there I’m able too play at full speed maybe 10 % of the time it’s not much but when I first heard this intro never I a million years did I ever think I would even be able to play that 10%
