Are Backing Tracks Holding You Back? Learn The BEST Way To Practice Bass
I love that song and I usually practice it using the A octave n play both ways. Great job love it. Happy New Year ❤
I haven't picked up a bass in more than 20 years (I wasn't very good), but this bassline has always stood out to me, it's a great song, and what I find fascinating about it is that the bass isn't particularly prominent in the mix, it's not a 'hey listen to this bassline' kind of song, it's one of those intangible things that makes certain songs magical. I think so, anyway, which is probably why I sought a video on youtube about how to learn this bassline, even though I have no intention of learning this bassline, but just so I could listen to this bassline in isolation.
Another great video. Again you do such a great job of explaining the theory behind the wonderful musical arraignments and rhythms. Thanks so much. I have got to get your book on bass players.
Thanks so much! I'm stoked you're digging the theory!
Criminally underrated bass tuber here. Very easy to follow along, even without tabs.
Love that lick.
Great lesson Ryan! Getting out of the old box of the minor pentatonic form and into a much more flexible arrangement helps quite a bit. I’ve noticed that you use Mike Lull basses quite a bit. Would you recommend them? I do a fair amount of studio work and a lot of gigging.
Thanks! And yes, I have a few Mike Lull basses and love them (both for touring and session work). They're great instruments!
Ryan: I am a beginner bass player, do you have any advice on my wrist and fingers ache after I practice days later I try to keep my wrist straight and not press hard on my strings I am 75 years old.
Without physically seeing someone play, it's hard to offer much feedback. But, what I will say is that you usually do want a bend in your wrist so that your fingers drape down over the strings. It also should let your arm be relaxed with your elbow down and forearm resting on the body of the bass. Try that and see if it helps!
@ Thank you for that advice I will give it a try.
Great lesson Ryan! This will really help me break out of my patterns. Thanks!
Thanks so much!!
That semi hollow looks tempting.
You read my mind, because I was looking for faster, easier, better ways to play minor pentatonic...
Side note… Minor pent is the same as the major pentatonic up a minor 3rd. C minor pent = Eb major pent.
To make any pentatonic scale. Just remove the tritone from the major scale to get a pentatonic. You've been teaching long enough to know this. Explain it that way. It's easier to hold in the mind longer and putting it on the fretboard. Ex. C major scale. Remove the tritone. B&F. A minor scale remove the tritone. F&B. Major is the 4 and 7. Minor is 2 and 6. Yes, these are tritones.
Right on....groovy intro. A shape/pattern I like for minor pentatonic scale is (using A minor starting on fifth fret of E string as an example) first finger on the A slide second finger to the third-C-8th fret, and then play C major pentatonic to the 6th-A on the D string-or any C major pentatonic shape. Or pinky on the A and then C major second finger on the 3rd fret.....gotta love the brother-sister 3rd and 6th.
Great job
Peter was right; you're intro today was spot on!!!
Great lesson! Agreed 2 and b6 always either drink too much or just bring store bought cookies to the party- they can leave! I like choosing a root and then looking for the various intervals both above and BELOW.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great thanks, you're often teaching to about my level! 🙂
Nice lesson. That's one of the finer points that separate guitar and bass guitar. I get away with pinky on minor 3rd interval, because I have big hands. But going for the third on the next string opens up more opportunities and is less stress on the fingers.
Terrific Ryan, thanks! 👍👊🎸
First, thank you for making this video as a bass learner I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience / advice. I think there are two things that would make this video better: 1) tabs or some kind of diagram for people who need to see what note / fret that you're hitting (visual learners) and 2) a different shirt. The heather pattern on your shirt gives an unintended Moiré effect in the video.
Nice Ryan.
I watched and listened to that opening jam about 5 times. Great lesson and reminder. Sometimes where I get lost is remembering the intervals and patterns when the root isn't the lowest note, like going further up the neck. Looks like I've given myself a little more homework ... Thanks, Ryan!
It's all about recognizing those patterns and keeping them organized on the fretboard. Glad you got something out of it!
Very Nice. 😃 Can you explain what you play at 4'23" please. Can you write the TAB. thanks.
Tabs are available by supporting my Patreon page :-)
Thank you, great lesson. The intro was killer 🎵
Excellent as always! Thank you for sharing 😎
Once again Ryan,excellent explanation!!
You're titling your YT clips WRONG.
Enlighten us, Einstein.
Do tell, show us your extensive knowledge.
Read from left to right.
Nice bass line. Clearly explained and demonstrated......thanks.
is there a specific reason why you choose the seventh degree? is it because it gives that half-step / whole-step pull or some other reason?
The type of seventh (major vs. minor) that you choose will ultimately impact the harmony. So, choosing a minor seventh that's a whole step from the root will automatically imply a minor or "dominant" tonality, which is most common in funk music.
😮
New Favorite teacher :)
That’s great. Thank you😍
Funky as fck!!!
What an amazing review! Thank you so much! I love the parts you decided to play for the demo. Speaks a lot to me. Also perfect amount of introduction and history and you've really showed some insights into this amazing bass. Looking forward to getting one myself!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review!
Another great video. I loved Art Appreciation in college, and now I am taking Music Appreciation also. Great stuff! Thanks.
Awesome, I'm glad you found this video helpful!
I love the way infuse music theory into your teaching of various songs. Fascinating stuff for a 70 year old bass newbee. I am beginning to understand why certain song arraignments that I've heard for years are so appealing.
It's amazing how the fundamentals of music can make those things click, right?
Thank you Ryan...love your lessons and a new subscriber.
Welcome aboard!
@RyanMadoraMusic thank you Ryan🙂
Sorry I'm a session bass player. I worked with the album and brothers for a short time. You're hitting the 4 too many times and there's no pick involved to get the right.Soundon't but you seem like a nice person.Good luck
I had to listen to this over and over - such an addictive sound. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you're digging it!
Thank you, Ryan! Good stuff!
Great lesson! Thank you.
Does Ryan use Simandl fingering for left hand?
Excellent. At 78 years old, I had been playing this slightly wrong for years! Thanks
Great lesson Ryan. Many thanks for choosing this song.
How about addressing the ‘almost’ major train wreck coming out of the drum break, when Barry comes in on the wrong measure. The band fortunately recovered, ending together.
I'm a drummer, and I don't play bass but I really enjoy your instruction and explanation, thanks Ryan.
Good job, you play it as I figured it out in the 1970s. One of my favorite Allman Bothers’ song. Yes, a lot of bass players did mimic the guitar part. When I learned the other ABB songs, I always try to be true to Berry Oakley’s part. I loved his unique way of playing - especially during the jams. The song “I know you don’t love me, is another good baseline for blues.
Cool 😎
Such a sweetheart, thank you
