I think Layne and Jerry were telepathically speaking to eachother while performing this song...you can see it in Jerry's expressions, and Layne keeping a constant closed eye gaze towards him throughout, almost as if he's saying sorry...R.I.P. Layne.
Well said man. Some deep sad stuff. As an addict I think you're right on the money. It doesn't get talked about much, because it's just more sympathy for the addict but the pain that addicts feel when they know they hurt the ones they love by doing their addict bullshit. That shit really is brutal. I know I'm killing my parents, I see it in their faces, and that hurts me. The solution is simple but very hard and everytime I do it I feel for them but still do it. It really does look like what you said. He's saying sorry with that gaze and vibe.

Also listening to the down in a hole song he fucked up the chorus Hella times too, saying losing my soul on the losing control part. I feel bad for the guy but I'm sure that played a part in him having that sorry gaze for the whole song. Still love them all. I miss this Era of rock and music in general so much. Even the r&b music was amazing. This was the last decade of genuine human emotion and innocence in music. Never again will there be wholesome and humanity in songs. I hope I'm wrong but all we can do is enjoy it and appreciate it happened.
Nirvana may have been at the front of the pack and Pearl Jam may have the longevity but AIC has always been my favorite to come out of that Seattle scene.

Idk what it is but I have been obsessed with AIC these past two days. Just reading and listening to everything and all things Layne, Icons with Jerry, etc. I wasn't into grunge when it 1st came out and I truly regret that now that I'm 50, but I absolutely love Alice in Chains now and always will.
I totally get what you mean. I go through different grunge stages, I listened to a lot more Nirvana when I was younger to get me through hard times, now that I'm a bit older, I tend to gravitate more towards alice in chains. Idk what it is bit they just speak to me.

@@Bag_ofDirtRemember your mom making her way to my place last night and you coming over for breakfast this morning because she wasn’t there to cook for you? That’s who YOU are working for. Remember that. I’M YOUR DADDY, BITCH!
Friends, people.......if your path has brought you here, in this time and place with these fantastically gifted artist...consider yourself lucky, even gifted. What we all fight is the balance between the things that cause pain and the pain itself. Me, myself...I knew I was onto something when I heard AIC's EP "Jar of Flies" the first time (1994). Immediately bought the album and listened to it over and over in the hope of drilling down to the root cause of all the feelings I had fought with, forever. The problem is you have to travel the same path repeatedly before you reach the end. At the end you come to know your actual enemy. For most people the enemy is "the hell within." If that is the case you are lucky, you can deal with yourself, you have all the mechanism in your being. They are inside. In 1993 I lost my wife. She was a perfect person, life and the disease she was born with slowly killed her. I was the lucky one, all I had to do is help her deal with it all as best I could. If you are not lucky the enemy is external, beyond your control. So, the only important thing is to identify your enemy and fight it as best you can. If the enemy is in you, you can fix it. If the enemy is outside you, well, you cannot fix it and must learn to live with the pain. If the pain wins, you will not survive. The journey you take is yours and yours alone. Please be strong, try to win.
This song is a damn masterpiece man! So many different dimensions to it. The beautiful harmonies between Layne and Jerry, over those hauntingly cool riffs. I've heard it for years now and it still never gets old
Is it just me, or do I think that their acoustic material is as great, if not, some cases, better than their rock material? Also, this is the best MTV Unplugged ever put to the world. I can only feel so grateful to have first experienced Alice In Chains at a very young age. Even if this is one of the last gigs they’d ever do with Layne, it’s the soul and the music of the band that do this performance justice. Just like pure red wine. Gets better every year. I liked them all, a LOT, BUT, tuere was no one that could compare to Layne Staley.. Jerry and Layne together the harmonies just melt my heart..
**Gotta say my favorite Layne stuff is Mad Season,, no comparison- THEY were absolutely just out of this world.. that is prob the most special group of musicians to come together in my opinion❤🙏❤🙏
I completely agree fella
Be what you wanna be
See what you came to see
Been what you wanna be
I don't like what I see....
This song came out the year my dad was dying of lung cancer. This album helped me process alot of troubling emotions.
My dad also was taken by lung cancer. Respects..... 😇
I think Layne and Jerry were telepathically speaking to eachother while performing this song...you can see it in Jerry's expressions, and Layne keeping a constant closed eye gaze towards him throughout, almost as if he's saying sorry...R.I.P. Layne.
yeah def. love and respect from Layne I agreee
@@shanemoline5890 Stay strong brother, ive been there too...always up at the witching hour like yourself, im in a band and play guitar, we cover all these tunes, it helps...hang in there my friend, thanks for the comment. 🙏
@@guitar6547 thank you as well. Always nice to find some encouraging words on the internet. Good luck to you as well.
Yo I didn't know that during this recording layne fucked up the song in the middle and they had to stop and start over.
Only heaven now, Layne
Jerry Cantrell Wrote a very beautiful and sad song… Still one of my favorite Alice In Chains songs.
Nirvana may have been at the front of the pack and Pearl Jam may have the longevity but AIC has always been my favorite to come out of that Seattle scene.
I love all 3 but Lance's voice is fucking unique
Same here Almost…Nirvana Was my Fave…then came Soundgarden !…AIC came Later …so Now it’s a Tie between them Both…even though I Still like Nirvana…but SG is the Shit !
Me too!
@@brianwilliams6555 he can't sing while doing riffs like cobain lol much credit to cantrell
Same
I can not believe it has been 20 years since LS died !!! Man...he did not even realize how important he was to the Grunge Movement. Best damn Rock since the 70s.
The best unplugged set. It suited them perfectly. Beautiful.
i love this song so much but the unplugged version will always be 100x better than the studio version
Kick ass band Kick ass performance.
Guys, don't judge me. I knew man in the box, angry chair, and some other singles, but I feel that only yesterday I've discovered Alice in Chains... I know I'm 30 years behind, but man this band is great... this song in particular seems like nirvana for me... and layne, what a voice..
Better late than never. This band is awesome
Alice In Chains destroys nirvana
That’s what it is. It does sound a lot like Nirvana. This has always been one of my favorite AIC tunes.
@@OscarOffTheCuff also, to each their own. Nirvana has made some absolutely amazing music too. Both great in different ways. Nirvana’s not really grunge tbh
Early AIC was really considered heavy metal. Man in the Box was a hardcore metal song, my favorite! Then they progressed into grunge/alternative/rock
Layne’s chorus gives me chills💙
The drumming is soo fucking groovy and badass on every one of these unplugged performances! Sean Kinney is a beast 🤘
It’s gonna be a long night
You know your band is good when your backup can have a band of his own
Or Nirvana...your drummer can go on and have a huge band. Some of these 90s bands were so talented.
Dexter M. That drummer looks like the lead singer of foo fighters!
Jerry was never back up. I said before Laynes death that as much as I like Layne, Jerry is AIC.
Yea kinda like Steve young and joe Montana
Or Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers
Best fucking harmony ever!!
Like the coldest winter chill...
Heaven beside you...Hell within
Like the coldest winter will...
Heaven beside you...Hell within
My favorite song from AiC. for about 25 years. I think Layne was such a talent that Jerry gets overlook. He's class and character shows in the way he steps out of the spotlight and let's Layne shine
I’ve re-watched their MTV unplugged performance many times over the years. Still powerful.
One of the most beautiful song they wrote
This band has saved my life this past year❤️
Glad your still here. 💙
i hope you’re doing alright❤️
same with me this year, still saving lol
Idk what it is but I have been obsessed with AIC these past two days. Just reading and listening to everything and all things Layne, Icons with Jerry, etc. I wasn't into grunge when it 1st came out and I truly regret that now that I'm 50, but I absolutely love Alice in Chains now and always will.
Past 6 months the same. I'm 47.
Same really been listening to a lot of the grunge stuff on pandora lately
I totally get what you mean. I go through different grunge stages, I listened to a lot more Nirvana when I was younger to get me through hard times, now that I'm a bit older, I tend to gravitate more towards alice in chains. Idk what it is bit they just speak to me.
October 2023 and I am now 67. Word for word what you said! 🙏
The opening guitar chords are just masterful...Jerry is a master...miss you Layne.
0:45 i love that chorus riff
The Best grunge unplugged beside to Nirvana's
Damn. Wish Layne had gotten cleaned up. His voice , like so many others lost recently...is missed. He and Jerry complemented each other so damn beautifully.
hell to yeah
The measure of the greatness of a band, is their live versions.
People connect to them on a soul level. Never be another like them.
The way their voices blend is legendary
one of my fave AIC Songs really showcases Cantrell as an outstanding lead vocalist in his own right i love how you have one of if not the greatest lead vocalist ever in Stayley singing backup zero ego between them great freaking song!!!
The best unplugged there ever was
The best band ever!
Always loved the Lennon-McCartney chorus on this one.
I cry every time. See through faded, super jaded, story of my life in the 90s. I made it out most of my friends didn't
It’s pretty easy to overlook Sean’s badass drumming. But it really is the backdrop of it all. Tight, tight, tight!
Just remember who you working for
@@Bag_ofDirtRemember your mom making her way to my place last night and you coming over for breakfast this morning because she wasn’t there to cook for you? That’s who YOU are working for. Remember that. I’M YOUR DADDY, BITCH!
Two awesome souls that came together for just a sort time!
Layne and Jery match made in heaven! Aic had one of the greatest acoustic songs.
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within...🖤
Friends, people.......if your path has brought you here, in this time and place with these fantastically gifted artist...consider yourself lucky, even gifted.
Unmatched live vocal harmonies....
The greatest MTV Unplugged.
This song is a damn masterpiece man! So many different dimensions to it. The beautiful harmonies between Layne and Jerry, over those hauntingly cool riffs.
I've heard it for years now and it still never gets old
One of my favorite song of all times, and this acoustic version I think is even better than the studio one.
Agreed.
Double agreed.
Most definitely
I agree this is one of those bands that are like glue...so ultimately synced...it's unreal...
I have NEVER been disappointed with this band... No matter what was going on with them they always ALWAYS gave it their all
F me these lyrics are EVERYTHING
2:22 To this day, in 2024, I’m still curious about the left side audio sound of what I think is an audience member shouting the word Rather?
This performance was/is so precious. Two rock gods showing such a gentleness and vulnerability. A very touching performance. R.I.P Layne🌹
RIP Layne Staley
Cheers for Jerry, Mike and Sean for carrying through. 🤘🏼❤️
I was over here thinking nirvana was the best, this is so good
This band was on the brink of something none of us fans can even comprehend . So sad it went down the way it did but one of the worst combos is smack , depression and a fat bank account 💸 . O.D waiting to happen R.I.P Layne thank you for your short time on this planet you and A.I.C helped me through many of sleepless nights during both my combat tours in the early 00's while serving USMC in Iraq Afghanistan and South America . ✌
We used to always play Rooster before our missions in Afghanistan
I swear there will never be another voice like Layne staleys
One of the truly great bands from the 90s and their music still holds up
pulls some heart strings
they were born for each other, their harmonies can only be matched by Serj and Daron. amazing band to be honest loved them since my grunge trip era, Rip Layne.
Layne and Jerry were great together vocally and the entire band are all gifted musicians to play at this level live!!
My heart hurts watching every time seeing lane as down as he is. What a amazing talent. From the heart. Rest easy lane. Heave beside you hell within ❤️
Jerry’s vocals appreciation comment 😍🙌💯😍
they both had great voices in their own right...but goddamn when their voices combined it was otherworldly.
I've spent countless hours over many years listening to this Unplugged session with AIC. One of MTV's absolute finest. #R.I.P.Layne
How does jerry sing this well, particularly considering he was sick during this performance... and Layne still being able to produce this amazing performance even though he was slowly fading away. Incredible
He was sick? I didn’t know that...there’s so much drama to this performance and it’s just outstanding
@@Greg-wz6fp he had food poisoning. You can see a black puke basket next to him
Even decades later AIC is one of the best to ever to grace earth. Even as frail as Layne was his vocal gift is undeniable. RIP Layne and Mike.
I will never get tired of that main acoustic riff. So simple yet so badass
jerry is probably one of my favorite guitarists. so many epic riffs and i haven’t heard him play a bad solo ever.
