You were always so far away
I know that pain, so don't you run away
Like you used to do
Layne and Jerry harmonizing their best right here! Who's still listening to this in 2023? If so you have excellent taste in music
Me. I'm still listening. This song hits me like no other AIC Unplugged song. I'll wake up in the mornings & my mind immediately hears Layne & Jerry's haunting harmonization of this song, especially their humming. So, I have to get my fix & play this song over & over. I love when Jerry looks up from his guitar & over at Layne, like "Wow, we sound so good". Because they did. They certainly did. And they are sorely missed. 💔
I am my favourite Alice song
It's totally incredible and a cerebral fix
i miss layne so much bro..
i'm 14 and i know every single song by them. don't go a day without listening to them
The harmonizing between Layne and Jerry gives me chills. The unplugged performance is their best work, in my opinion.
Yea every song in this session is done way better than their studio versions in my opinion. Such a haunting performance...
@@goldensh0t439 haunting describes it perfectly.
Yup!!! Agreed!! 👌👌👌
And their last, sadly
Perfect!
21 years since Layne passed and still no band has even came close to being this good.
So true bro
Band before them are still the greatest of all time but OKAY
Did you just say 21 years 😮
Soundgarden maybe being very close. Not equal to, ofc.
@@finnafishflsays you?
Speaking as an "old guy" who was alive when MTV Unplugged was live, Alice In Chains was THE best one. Sure, Nirvana was great, so were "The Cranberries", and MANY others. But AIC was hands down THE best. The Eagles are a close second.
Who ?who?who?who? What
Nirvana's set was only even half theirs as they relied upon so many covers (6 I think?). AIC brought all of their own songs plus writing a new one just for this show. And the Unplugged versions of Sludge Factory and Frogs are so much better than the self-titled album IMO.
@@lluewhyn they might be covers but they damn sure made them their own
Layne is the voice of Grunge for me
i wholeheartedly agree 100%. I stated listening to them in 1990 and have always, this fuking band was my fav over the rest, im an original generation X grunge, alternative, druggie (labels, labels!!!)AIC was the best. To have this unplugged performance sound as righteous as it does vocals, guitars, drums its rare. I personally wasnt into unplugged back then, because so many bands really sounded like shit. AIC in my opinion played the BEST unplugged. that was an era you just had to be there, and us ones that were, we were ridiculed back then for our music clothes and non conformist attitude of fuck yeah, funny how i was given such a hard time for being my own thing then as years go on grunge was my generations thing!!! it wasnt liked at all, we were just being ourselfs, didnt follow the norm, our music we loved others didnt give a chance until decades down the road. i was mezmerized by AIC in 90 and that voice is still mezmerizing an "origanal ol skool alternative".. (fuking labels)
There will never again be two voices that harmonize better together than Layne and Jerry!
Serj and Daron are godly when they harmonize too! Just on a much faster pace.
daron and serj
Agreed these two are right up there with McCartney/Lennon and The Everly Brothers as far as harmonies go.
Eagles
@@rajaelite2026 those ones were the best in harmonization to me, until I found out Alice in Chains 🌚
When the instruments cut out @ 3:40 and it's just Layne and Jerry harmonizing I got chills. You're forced to focus on how incredible their vocals are and I love that they cut the backing guitars out for that part because it made that moment so much more impactful
Yes! It’s my favorite AIC moment ever.
yeah its so beautiful...I have no words when I listen to it
Wonder how that color tastes! Wow!
I’ve sang this song so much, I grew up hearing it but never knew the just how deep and meaningful this song was until I lost my oldest brother in Kabul 9 years ago. I hold this song very tight and close to me. 💜
Crazy how the peak of that performance is the when the instruments drop out and you're left with the pure symbiotic harmony of Layne and Jerry. Timeless beauty
Oh man they set the bar for harmonising on this one, just out of this world.
as good as Lennon and mcartney
Yeti Vanmarshall I agree.
AIC set the bar in a lot of ways
Lol I love your profile pic and yeah they nailed it on this whole concert I think my favorite song as far as harmonising goes is no excuses for some reason it always puts me in the mode for playing Mario kart
@Kara Police yeah lol
My big brother struggled with addiction and schizophrenia, and last year we lost him to suicide. This song is cathartic. It will always remind me of him, the things I regret saying, and the things i should have said but didn’t. He had a passion for guitar and singing, and I only wish he could have lived longer to realize those dreams.
As long as you remember your big brother, he will always be alive in your heart. ♥
I hope you get better your brother sounds like a amazing and talented person
Sad but true
His hands are untied. You will see him again. Godspeed.
Rip
Possibly the greatest band of all time, certainly is to some people. Alice in chains will be listened to until this earth perishes.
stevo3938 you got that right buddy
Queen
Is to me! Rip Layne and Mike
Aic saved my life. I can't thank them enough for the music they have created.
@@murdocsaints666 - How in what way? Why now in days so many say this about songs?
The MTV Unplugged concerts are absolutely legendary.
No doubt, this is the best of them tho Imo.
@@puppetmaster8551 Pearl jam… nirvana?
@@Hendo9666 what about them? Both of those are great but AIC unplugged is still King.
@@puppetmaster8551 this is by far the best one, IMO. Nirvanas “where did you sleep last night” cover is one of the best Unplugged moments ever though.
@@HotStrange yeah that was an incredible moment from nirvana and kurt, Pearl jams performance was pure passion aswell Eddie vedder put his soul into that unplugged set. They are all equally amazing
No other band makes depression sound as badass as AIC
Jerry’s solo album Degradation trip rules and has a lot of really dark depressing shit that sounds amazing, the full version of the album is 25 track and it’s amazing, if you haven’t heard it and love depressing AIC stuff it’s a must listen obviously because Jerry was the primary songwriter for AIC, so many great lyrics on that album too.
Truth.
Accept them & Nirvana
It’s a modern take on American Appalachian blues. Being sad or singing about hard things used to be just as normal as singing about rainbows and sunshine.
You fucker.
That's a sweet comment you got there, son.
Cantrell is one of the best complete musicians ever.....the guy is sick at everything
It's so much harder to play, all the tough stuff, soloing, doing the vocal harmonies, and not to mention writing the song AND the lyrics to this. Layne's voice is classic but Jerry is a complete musician. And a flawless performance by everyone. This ranks up there as the best song in all of the Unpluggeds, which is saying a lot considering who came on to perform.
The most amazing thing is Layne's breath support and lung capacity. When the guitars cut out and they're just harmonizing...Layne isn't even trying. Barely moving. No strain. Long, held out lines. Jerry visibly takes large breaths. Just like the rest of us would.
That’s what happens when you are on heroine
@@ArmyRob13 "heroin" doesn't produce larger lung capacity. It diminishes and depresses respiration. Which makes this even more impressive.
Pure, natural talent. His voice is completely mesmerizing
@@joesikorski4080 absolutely he was amazing at singing it’s so sad to see how fast his health depleted after this show by 1998 he was in really rough shape he was so pale and skinny and rapidly loosing weight.
@@ArmyRob13 Tell me you don't know anything about opiate addiction, without telling me you know nothing about opiate addiction.
Jerry's writing here was to his real brother, but here it looks as though he's singing about his other brother Layne.
Me too my brother,if he could understand me and my life love him dearly Shaun forgive me
I've heard him sing the song on my pandora channel, and it sounds almost like he is singing solo. I wonder if he did a dedication to Layne after he passed.
@@bcrwarlock1974 Jerry dedicates a different song to Layne. Black Gives Way to Blue is Layne's song. This song is for Jerry's brother David. They grew up apart because their parents divorced. Jerry stayed with his mom and David stayed with his dad. We owe a lot to David and Sean. During Jerry's darkest battles with addiction, they staged an intervention and practically dragged Jerry to get help.
I feel the same way love and peace
damn 💔
If there's such a thing as playing acoustic drums, Sean Kinney absolutely gets it.
Totally agree. One of the best imo. So tasteful, yet never overplays.
You can learn a lifetime’s worth of drum mastery listening to just this set.
Such a good and underrated drummer, absolutely spot on during this concert. He always writes amazing drums throughout all of AiCs projects and he is just a flawless performer, never gets too sped up and is just always on pace. He plays a big part in AiC being one of the best live bands ever. Dude is a legend in my book
I always considered Dave Ghrol to be the best “soft drummer” along with Nick Mason
@@serjtankian5474 good call on Nick Mason..some of the things he did with Floyd are grossly underrated.
3:40. The harmony in parallel shows Jerry grasping air, but Layne carrying without taking air. This shows how much air his lungs can hold. A most important feature for a good singer.
Yeah… did Layne even breathe?
Hate to be that guy but Layne took air in at least 3 times. He just takes little breaths in.
His pulse is also like at 15
Barely hanging on
How would u do
I've had a serious AIC addiction since I first heard their music at age 20. I turned 50 this year and my addiction is stronger than ever. Layne's voice is unrivaled and IMO the GOAT. Still rocking out in 2019 and into the foreseeable future. RIP Layne 💜
Gemini Girl this is true I gotta remind myself all the time of how many killer songs they actually have, is crazy he’s gone can you imagine the music he woulda made by now
Great talent great band unplugged was a spectacular concert
Timothy Hunt he would've only gotten better with time. The song writing and music would've been stellar. God I miss Layne 😥
And rip his brother jerry
I feel the same except I was 17 and I'm about to turn 41. Man how the time flies when your jamming AIC. Love there newest stuff also. RIP Layne. /W\ We all miss U.
The unplugged sessions really bring out the blues foundation in the music they created.
no, like aic style actually. Jerry says he wrote songs with blues influence.
Ultim4te guitarist no he’s right, Rock was born from blues. That’s why many rock guitarists still use “blues scales” and other guitar techniques invented by blues musicians.

MA COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!
i love the unplugged sessions and jar of flies more than anything else they've done really. the heavier stuff is just a bit too sludge metal for me. I love the heavy side of soundgarden but that had more energy in much of it and a more frenetic punk energy.
Man their voices are magic, but can we all just talk for a second about how perfect Jerry's acoustic sounds with Mike's bass, and Sean's kit tone? Man this band had synergy. Chilling!
They really are incredible. This was truly a special group. Never heard anything like them before-the way they sound together is unreal.
Top performance
Orchestratic bliss
100%
2 Seattle’s bands had the best unplugs they ever did no surprise
@ 1:22 when Jerry looks up and nods approvingly, it seems he realizes how good and special this is.
3:40 is heavenly. I've never heard two voices harmonize and just meld together so damn well. I bet Jerry misses that.

Keep in mind that Layne was off the rails for a long time y'all.. there's so many performances he crushed but would've been even better without Heroin

I'm sorry about your loss man. It's hard to even read your comment because I couldn't imagine the pain you went through. I just hope everything is alright with you today bro. ❤
I'm 55 now and still kick myself for not paying more attention to AIC when I was younger. I can't say how much the music has touched me. I watch these videos and feel Layne's pain. His voice is one of a kind! I wish u were here and could see the impact your music has had and is stll having on this world! RIP
OMG, I feel the same way. I am 67 and "discovered" The Doors...that has been a deep hole listening to all their music and reading multiple books. So now stumbled on AIC..I was never into rock, metal grunge, etc. (if it was dance/trance I was all over it) but am captivated by their sound and story. This is extending into other groups out of Seattle in the 90's as well. Now I truly feel like I missed so much. AIC will be with me now forever. The harmonizing...can't get over it.
Same happened to me. Unknowingly listen to their “greatest hits” CD in the tub as a young kid, refound them later in life. Best band that’s existed
Мне 34 чувствую тоже самое. Лет 20 назад Nirvana была самой лучшой группой. Теперь я понял что до Alice in chains надо дорасти
I’m 55 and agree with you 100%. Today however I can’t get enough, especially of the unplugged and listed through ear buds every time I walk the dog.
You was too busy dressing like Ricki Rocket from Poison's Look What the Cat Dragged in album cover to pay attention to the golden 90s music scene.
Still here 2024...man....
In terms of harmonizing these 2 are right there with John and Paul it’s so beautiful the way they sing together
this unplugged concert is absolute perfection. when they’re unplugged the songs take on a haunting, dark, folk-style tone.
The a cappella moment at 3:40 transcends time and space.

I couldn't agree more, about 2 years ago. I had the opportunity to go and see him live. Talk about Epic. What a great show
He still is. One of the best to ever do it.
This band represents everything I love about music. Laynes raw beautiful voice mixed with the harmony of Jerry's. That raspy guitar and deep bass. And the drums just complete everything
"Pictures in a box at home yellowing and green with mold so I can barely see your face wonder how that color tastes" man what a line what a song there will never be a duo quite like lane and Jerry ever again RIP Lane you are truly missed....
This entire performance was incredibly deep and soulful.
Just lost my Brother suddenly to Cancer. Only Laynes voice comes near to the pain.
I am so sorry for your loss. Wishing you strength as you carry onward 🖤
Terribly sorry for your loss.
I can’t even imagine what jerry felt when he found out about Layne. The two of them wrote some amazing songs together. They literally were brothers.
Wholesome fact: after Layne’s death, Jerry adopted his cat
I just wanted him to know somebody loves him.
Sad thing was Layne died many years before 2002
There will never be music as good as the 90’s again
Since Laynes since passed, it’s mesmerizing to watch Jerry and Layne sing the bridge part in unison. So haunting and ethereal, especially how the camera focuses in on Jerry as the bridge wraps. fading memories covered in mold, I think about Jerry carrying aic on his own now. It’s like the lyrics to this song apply so heavily in a different sense now, Jerry to Layne
The way Jerry looks at Layne gets me every time. Like he's hopeful that this will make him right
This song makes me think of my little brother, my best friend in childhood. we both partied hard in our 20’s but became lost in our own separate worlds of drugs… finally both becoming iv addicts. He is a remarkably talented self taught musician & always taught me about the best music. After a major bacterial infection destroyed one of his heart valves we both got clean. We recently had an argument & I really worry about him, if he was to relapse his heart is so damaged he wouldn’t likely survive. Scott I’m sending this to you through the airwaves. I love u little brother & im sorry we argued last time we spoke. I’m so proud of you & your recovery!! Life is too fragile to quarrel with one another 😢💕

None of us will survive.
I don’t know what it is about Alice In Chains but I’ll get their songs stuck in my head for like days
Me too? I have had Would? on my mind for 2 weeks.
This song has tricky vocal harmonies, Layne and Jerry sort of keep switching their roles in the harmony in comparison to how people would do this harmony. I guess this is one reason why people keep mistaking one voice for the other in their songs and why people hear doubling on their tracks where there isn't any. It might also have been a way for them to sing together in a way that no one was merely doing backing vocals. Most of the time, this band doesn't have a frontman, it's a band with two singers.
We are pretty lucky that they did Unplugged, it really helps people to appreciate their intricate compositions, and also helps with learning to sing their stuff properly for covers.
1:16 . Jerry looks at Layne in astonishment & approval after brilliantly nailing the chorus harmony,. HOF Rock N Roll moment
1:20
A lot of that in this whole session..I can't help but be moved by such magic..and such tragic loss of talent combined...😥
3:39, I love this part! The camera showing Layne and Jerry both singing, is what I'd call perfection!
One of my favorite MTV unplugged sessions.
Nothing comes close to the power, the skill, the beauty, and the hauntedness
Crazy how good their voices blend. Greatest unplugged ever!!
A jewel of MTV my teens are here. I can cry..... Those were the times.
Their harmonies sound amazing. And damn Cantrell really does have a good voice. Crazy how he never noticed or pursued that early on. Staley had to convince him to sing his songs
I have no idea how every single song they make can sound so melodically hypnotic

Incredibly talented group, didn't get nearly as much attention as they deserved.
Exactly
Layne & Jerry's a cappella is so beautiful. This band is so amazing with so much diversity in their music. Just Love them. And Layne appears to sing that part so effortlessly.
Layne and Jerry harmonizing is so haunting and at the same time beautiful.

Love looking through the comments on these videos and knowing that AIC are still helping people through tough times. If you’re addicted, depressed, etc. just know there are others like you we all bond through this common escape. Long live Layne❤️
Most fans know that Layne was the one who layered most vocal harmonies, but Jerry seems to have some talent in hearing harmonies as well. He knew exactly how to keep a melody and flavor it up in a way that didn't sound weird with Layne's voice. 4:13-4:24 is a good reference of how he went from a base melody, to a higher one, and back to the base melody where Layne's overtones matched it. These two could've been the S&G of grunge, well they are, I don't think any duo in the grunge scene did this.
Layne and Jerry harmonizing their best right here! Who's still listening to this in 2024? If so you have excellent taste in music

Heck no! This band would not be what they are without Jerry's vocals. Layne had that high pitch and Jerry was perfect with his vocals bringing the tone right back down. I was telling my son that there harmonizing is what sets this band apart from other rock bands. Art at it's finest!
I remember when I was a little kid, I had no clue Jerry was also singing and in later songs singing the lead vocals. He's got a great voice.
Layne does Harmony on this one Jerry's the main singer for this tune
Have you not heard his solo albums?
Boggy Depot... give it a listen kid
23 years later and still just as good.
Even better compared to today's "music".
It is a static musical object - why wouldn't it be exactly as good as it has ever been? Kind of redundant.
@@DuncanWLievi it was a simple remark, not need to overanalyze it :)
This music has gotten better with time.

Those high toms that Sean hits right before "you were always so far away." Are perfect.
This is by far the best version of this song. The vocal harmonies and open-chord progression are breathtaking. The most impressive component of this performance tho, Jerry holding back explosive diarrhea. True story.
one of the greatest bands of all-time. if you disagree, you don't know music.
probably, the best band for me.
@@emildelapena979 same
@@Andrew-fw8rg they underrated. but a.i.c is far best for me among the big four. facelift and dirt are the two of my favorite albums of all time!
@@emildelapena979 yeh there heavily underrated and don't get enough credit for their music even they had probably one of the best voices of all time
@@Andrew-fw8rg because when nirvana's nevermind came out, they ruled the grunge scene not just in seattle but in the whole world and they ranked no. 27 in the rolling stone magazine 100 greatest artists of all time. but i prefer alice in chains more because of their pure raw talent and i love their dark and gloomy lyrical concept. layne is one of the most honest, talented and hilarious guy ever walked this planet. but sadly he's gone too soon.
Been listening to Layne since 2011 (12 years old) and I dont think i will ever stop. I know with age music tastes change, you change as a person. But this band.. Layne has changed me. I don't think i could ever lose my softspot for this man. i don't think i'll ever give up on celebrating his life. I love you Layne. I'm sorry you couldn't be saved.
I’m 56 and a big AIC fan. That’s sweet dude
I just realized that I found them at 8 years old. My babysitter played them a lot. My 14 year sister was into Nirvana and my father was super into Metallica and Pearl Jam. As a family we listened to as much grunge in the 90s as we did Led Zeppelin or The Doors. I loved our blues Sundays. My father just loved rock and blues guitar.
Im 25 and just discovered this band this year (yea, i know im late) but it's now my favorite💗
Laynes haunting vocals, Cobain's Angst ridden scream, Woods beautiful harmonies, Cornels superior range, Zapatas angry, vicerol screams, Lanegans baritones... everyone of em had their own sound, but for me Laynes just pulled my heart strings, so, so sad yet eleviating,!! RIP
I literally cry when I listen to this concert.. joy and sadness.. no other band like them. Forever in time for sure!!!🖤
Insanely good. This band should have ruled the world for decades.
Frozen in the place I hide
Not afraid to paint my sky
With some who say I've lost my mind
Brother, try and hope to find
You were always so far away
I know that pain
So don't you run away
Like you used to do
Roses in a vase of white
Bloodied by the thorns beside the leaves
That fall because my hand is
Pulling them hard as I can
You were always so far away
I know that pain
I won't run away
Like I used to do
Pictures in a box at home
Yellowing and green with mold
So I can barely see your face
Wonder how that color taste
You were always so far away
I know the way
So don't you run away
Like you used to do
Thanks
We've been, we've been waiting a long time to play this show
And we like to thank you all for coming up to see it
Means a lot to us and we gonna have a good time
Play some good songs, maybe
Song's called "No Excuses"
Layne and Jerry’s harmonies blow my mind every time
These MTV Unplugged session will be looked upon in a 100+ years like we look at classical composers.
This song live is way better then the recorded one in my opinion! Still listening in 2023 and beyond! Layne was an incredible individual, rest in power!
