#1 Unplugged show!!! Hands down. When MTV actually mattered.
Idk man. It’s a close one with Nirvana 😬
@@godsmacked1000 nirvana is a intresting pick because they didnt sing their own songs but it was still awsome

Layne's little laugh at the beginning gives me so much joy
Hearing it on pandora just now made me want to see him laugh. I love it.

I love that they kept it💙
There will never be another voice like his. Even In his worst physical shape, hIS voice never faultered ...He was an angel here on earth, here to remind us of our humanity... But the devil didn't want such a gift 2 be shared long
WE MISS U LAYNE
I definitely do not get joy. I don’t know what I get but that’s why I keep coming back.
0:00 Layne's little laugh, it makes me happy
Oh me too 😁😃
O without question! I got to see this entire performance on Paramount.
Oh wow that's so cool 🤘🎸😆
Layne had such a great ear for harmonies. Such a powerful voice but could just hang low and blend in with Jerry perfectly. These guys weren’t just rockers, they were true musicians and artists. Nothing will ever come close to Alice In Chains again.
That's lots of work
perfectly-rounded group of musicians. layne and jerry took singing to a whole new level. rip layne
What the. Hell was Alice?not grunge not metal?just great
@@johngiddings9799 Alice? who the f is Alice!?... R.i.p brother Staley tells it all coincided with Cantrell whenever played..
@@johngiddings9799 i believe Alice in Chains was considered doom or sludge metal and were lumped in with the grunge movement which was an invented term anyway. Same when they invented the term punk rock a lot of the bands didn't sound the same, Ramones sounded nothing like the Sex Pistols.
Layne's laugh at the beginning gets me everytime. RIP LAYNE AND MIKE
Is he chuckling because of the song choice
Layne's laugh at the beginning is from someone yelling out in the crowd
The best "Unplugged" performance out of the entire series.
It’s my favorite song since 10 years!
Agreed
By a long shot
I agree it was the best but the Nirvana set was pretty freaking awesome also.
Idk Eddie vedder killed it before he had to make a cause ugh
Jerry explained in an interview that while performing this, he was thinking of two things: his band coming to an end, and his best friend dying. This concert must have been so hard for everyone.
RIP Layne, you're deeply missed. And so are you, Mike.
jerry is an amazing artist.... this must have been so hard for him... mike and layne are so missed ....
Your Mom this video is Mike Inez who is alive still, but yes Layne and mike starr are very missed
You can tell he new Layne was in rough shape
Jerry is the rooster, he’s never gonna die! Strong minded individual
Your Mom super sad thinking about that, makes you really feel for Jerry and the rest of the band. At least this lineup went out with a bang delivering one of the all time best performances.
I gained a tremendous amount of respect for this band from the way they never turned their backs on Layne Staley, staying loyal till the end.
I
Love it
That's actually not 100% true if you read up on ur early info, and I mean actual facts, quotes, things off that nature. They remained friends yes but they turned on him plenty.
They turned on him a few times. They kicked him out of AiC in '95 due to to his drug use.
Kicked him out for sickness he fought and fought, he loses his fiancee and didn't get over it. He was abandoned by many and left to die in the loneliest way. Layne deserved fucking better. Way better.
everyone mentions Layne's voice, i would like to point out his ear, this song is a perfect example of when Jerry sings the lead, and Layne's ability to instantly harmonize with him is what made this band so fucking special....once in a lifetime pairing of voices...hands down the most talented of the Seattle bands....and this unplugged is a masterpiece
I really like Jerrys voice I tend to like lots of the songs he sings lead on no disrespect to Layne just the ear likes what it likes. I had this album I remember my ex pointed it out to me I listened to more of Jerrys songs.
thats fine but just say they were great or amazing, the second you say the best then you dismiss the mighty chris cornell lol
I love these guys but I think soundgarden is hands down the most talented band from Seattle

Layne and Jerry together were something really special.
Jerry's best guitar work of the whole session. Just haunting and perfection.
Jerry saying "look me straight in the eye" at the same time as Layne saying "look myself in the eye" has to be one of the most gut wrenching things I've ever heard
💯
Agreed. I said previously that everyone was spot on during this performance - but I should say that Layne sometimes seemed uncomfortable with the setting. Probably different from full frontal attack of facelift and dirt live shows for sure.

Jerry’s voice is insanely good
In this show he was singing even better than the studio versions
How good does that make layne !?! He kinda over shadowed jerry in a way . Both have and had insane talent !!!
Whey they first got together Layne said that Jerry had a good voice and should sing more, and Jerry returned the favor being suportive to Layne picking up a Guitar
May not have the biggest range but he’s got a great voice and has always been an amazing performer. One of the best musicians ever imo
it's on key, but I wouldn't say it's insanely good
Best unplugged in the history of the unplugged shows
I'm back and forth
Yes, sir...hands down! The only other that comes close for me was The Eagles.
I think Pearl Jam did a amazing job also, in my own opinion that is. ✌️
I'm in agreement with Joseph.
AiC and PJ, imo are the best 2 unplugged MTV ever did..
They seem to be born to perform together
Most haunting grunge song ever.
This song always sounded like perfect duality to me. Half of it is upbeat (even with positive lyrics), followed by the other half which has one of the most haunting riffs known to man
Floods
Rights that riff is like my top fav forsure ever since I first heard at 13
To me AIC was a master in that. So many songs of them have that duality. But yeah, this song is where they perfected it, i think.
We pay our debt somtime
Looking at every member of the bands facial expressions... You can tell they know it's all over.. The band.. You can tell they knew this was the end for them sadly.. And it hit them hard.
But, it wasn't the end of their career. It was sad watching Layne slowly kill himself, for sure, but AIC eventually moved on, releasing many new hits. People were just getting used to the fact that Mike Starr was gone and replaced with Inez (who was good, in his own right). They weren't ready for another band problem, especially one of that capacity. But...nearly a decade later...the band popped out a new album.
Sem duvida o Layne sofria com a perda da namorada e o abuso de drogas
@@mikeanderson1370 If there's one band that has rebounded strongly from tragedy its this one.
If you've ever been in a band you kno that you forge a brotherly bond with the other members. If you've ever been in a band torn apart by addiction, you kno it rips your heart wide open to watch one of those brothers be destroyed. Fame or no fame it hurts so bad. One of my bandmates overdosed last April. I knew him since we were 14 or 15 years old. I'm 34 now. Addiction stole a lot from us both. I'm now looking at 2 years clean from heroin. Thank God it almost killed me too... it is not a game. It's not to be glorified. It's misery in all its worst forms. It only destroys you and you feel like there is no way out. There is hope tho if you can find it.
Wirhout Laynes voice it's not the same...personally i dont like the 'new' AiC with DuVall.. but thats just my opinion
True Fact: Jerry Cantrell had food poisoning for this show, that black waste basket is next too him because he was vomiting from the food poisoning, not sure if he actually vomited during the performance, from the Unplugged footage he seems in good spirits same with the rest of the band , but it's a funny story and crazy too think he played such an incredible show while extremely ill. And we all know how Layne was doing during this time so the fact the band was not doing so good but still managed too put on such a fucking legendary show is a true testament too how good they really were.
Yeah...that's what I like about them...don't forget Layne's show in a wheelchair (because of his broken foot)...the best!
That's why I watch it every week, this is fucking awesome
And although he (Jerry) was so ill, he kept checking on Layne through the whole show.. asking if he's ok. Such an epic performance even though they really were falling apart. I'll always respect and idolise these guys.
I'm a heroin addict and there's NO WAY I could do as a phenomenal job as Layne through my struggling. The demons and slow suicide take everything you once were away but Layne fought long and hard as long as he could.
My buddy was at the taping in NYC. He never said anything about Jerry vomiting so I presume that didn't happen. However, he told me that Layne was in really bad shape and to prepare myself for the inevitable. Layne was so frail at that point that he had to be helped to and from the stage by stagehands. The taping also took over 4 hours because Layne kept either repeating the same lyrics, or completely forgetting them- and the rift it was causing with the band during the set was obvious to though who were seeing it live. So incredibly sad.
Wow man, didn't know that.. Thats really impressive, this band is truly amazing.. And this is one of the best Unplugged ever
I saw this live as a young boy and it has stayed with me ever since and gives me the same feeling all these years later. This is epic, this is immortal

The harmony between these two guys was always insane to me. Over Now & Heaven Beside You, with beautifully, subtle harmonies touch my soul deeply. I've watched this MTV Unplugged episode featuring Alice in Chains 1000+ times over the years & never tire of it. WTH happened to MTV? Creating "Unplugged" featuring awesome bands like Nirvana & Alice in Chains, who'd come on & play stripped down versions of their songs, surrounded by candles, in front of an intimate audience was the best idea ever. I always wanted to be in that audience. Now MTV airs braindead episodes of Ridiculousness & Teen Mom. Damn that sucks.
The bridge that starts at 2:21 is one of the best live acoustic sequences I’ve heard. Both guitars float around each over and complement the song and the feel of aic as a band beautifully. Amazing.

The ending of this just freight-trains me , never heard a sadder or more lonely end of a song. I'm from Seattle, I get it.
Jerry looked at Layne alot like he was concerned about him this whole show.

The bass line is so key in this song and how does Cantrell write music like that, incredible
And he doesn't even read music. He is self-taught & just knows things. It's mind-boggling to me how he does it.

One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. I love it, I've always gotta play it and rewind it a few times, it's gorgeous. Haunting..
I love how in almost all the songs there performing Layne always halfway turns to Jerry but never looks directly at them like their communicating in some mysterious way
They were truly soulmates
I think that’s just him reading the lyrics.
keep in mind how high Layne was and how very sick Jerry was and that just adds to this performance

what I like the most about this version is how it led me to a deeper appreciation of Mike Inez's bass line
