30 years gone in a blink of an eye.
I still remember where I was when I heard of his passing. I was 7 years old, standing in my friends kitchen with his mother who had a radio near her and she gasped. I asked her what was wrong and she told me Kurt Cobain died
I was in Purchase college. It was like the world stood still. Devastating loss.
I work in Aberdeen all the time and I constantly have a connection to his songs. It like I feel his spirit in song when I work out in that area. It's very relatable. I'm an ex drug addict and I totally understand how he felt. Totally separated from normal life. Sad. I'm glad to be alive and to be able to enjoy his music. I'm so happy to be able to fish and enjoy the nature of grays harbor. But I understand how he felt.
I was -3 days old, i missed the guy by a hair. :)
I even was born back then, kurt cobain will never be forgetten
The look he gives as he prepares that last breath always gives me chills
He knew.
Those ice blue eyes!!!
It represents Kurt's happiest memories ever.
I love this .. that eyes frame .. the song that's not his, but i prefer lot him to play this song .. Kurt was .. no way, Kurt .. was.
lol wtf are you talking about @@EarthboundApocalypse
30 years ago... We will never forget you, bro. Your music will forever be immortal, just like your spirit.
I believe he was taken from us, know what I mean? Guessing he didn't want to sell something. Can't wait to see him in heaven.
That look he gives. Timeless. I was just 12 when this came out. How I wish I was just a few years older and realized the history in making. ❤
I remember reading a story where Kurt thought everyone hated his performance the first time he played, because the audience was dead silent after he played. He mistook the silence for apathy when it was actually utter awe.💖💖💖💖💖💖
He sounds like an ally cat that moans and cries loudly all night, as it echos up to your closed window while you try to sleep 😂
everyone was silently trying not to cry knowing they were experiencing history live in the making.
one of the epic live performances
actually his last epic live if i'm not mistaken. Shortly after (wanna say less than 1-2 weeks) I believe is when a worker at his estate stumbled on him in the greenhouse@@jmazoso i recommend Montage of Heck to everyone who loved this man at least as much I do. No one beats Courtney Love's..love tho....its gruesome what seeing him did to her and how she describes what she went thru/did upon seeing the body. All the conspiracy bs about her pisses me off, they were in love, his mental illness did what it does going untreated. All the money/fame in the world doesn't mean shit without proper mental health. Can't wait to lose our educaton department soon and even more abortion bans. Kurt was outspoken af about all that too ironically. gay rights,, women's rights, even trans acceptance...such a king

He’s just turning left to right all the time lmao
The 90’s were great.
I was thinking exactly the same 😂
Why?
I was in the 3rd row with my uncle, we never knew at the moment how legendary this concert was going to be oh, we just thought it was going to be another rock concert, to this day we both consider ourselves two of the luckiest people considering what happened. I tell you one thing you think Kurt's voice on video or CD is moving, seeing him sing this live, is one thing I will never forget still gives me chills.... Kurt, we miss you brother, I hope you found peace.. thank you for the music that you left us in a short time, Nirvana will never die....
daamn god bless you. you witnessed an angel sing his heart out
Lucky!!!!!!!!!!
Born '03 - i' d sell my soul for a concert...
You are a lucky person, he is a legend, but always came off as a chill small town guy, he didn't let the fame get to him in a way that made him think he was better than the every day person
you got to see him record his last track before his death. is it fun watching it again to your hearts content?
The cup that Kurt drinks from at 5:51 is the entire 90s in a single object.
lol
damn so true 90s and very early 2000's for sure.
He's got such an aura around him it's crazy
Dude, the silence at the end. Like, everyone was just respectful and in awe of Kurt.

Ya he was great, but also a junkie I wouldn't want him touching my pin to sign his name with then give it back, nasty.
@@D-train69 What the hell are you even talking about?
I remember reading a story where Kurt thought everyone hated his performance the first time he played, because the audience was dead silent after he played. He mistook the silence for apathy when it was actually utter awe.
That’s crazy. His unplugged performances are some of the best performances in the history of music.
Carrey said year ago, 90% of what you read about famous people is fabrication. Nowadays it is probably close to 100%.
If I remember this story correctly right after the performance he was riding an elevator with a record company suit and based on the crowd reaction was unsure of what they thought. She told him something like "they think you're Jesus Christ." After a little bit he smiled and nudged her and said "I was pretty fucking good tonight, wasn't I?" I liked that little anecdote. Also apparently MTV wanted them to do an encore and Kurt knew there was no way in hell he could top the Lead Belly cover and refused.
his best ever performance. RIP.
they are not that silent at the end tho
Everyone was in shock at the end and couldn't move. Such a powerful concert. I wish they would bring back the unplugged shows again.
Unfortunately MTV isn't about the music anymore.
What means “unplugged” ?
@@Neoptolemus It's an acoustic concert. Basically no electric instruments.
@@drfoulcheesevirusthat’s ironic because kurt is actually plugged into an amplifier that they basically covered up, you can see the amp chord in some parts lol

Musical grunge genius. Gone too soon. Never to be forgotten. Not just for us MTV generation. For 100 years and more. They will never forget Nirvana 🖤
Kurt's natural way of greeting people after giving the best performance ever is incredible 😄
I read somewhere Kurt was disappointed at the end or during this performance because of the crowds reaction and he had to be told that they were literally awe struck and couldn't fathom what they had just witnessed and how people viewed him as this mythic figure even during his lifetime so they didn't know how to react while seeing him in person playing, especially up close like the audience in this performance was, and kurt replied "I was pretty good wasn't I?" One of the few times he actually acknowledged his talent from what I've read.
His lack of ego is why I respect him so much, he hardly ever acknowledged himself as a good player and never bragged about his fame or talent. Poor dude just wanted to make the music he wanted, the fame was never his goal at all. His lack of ego was also kind of his downfall though, as he eventually grew to see himself as nothing and took his own life because of it... *supposedly*. Imagine his reaction to finding out the guitar he played is now worth 6 million dollars, 12 times what leadbelly’s guitar was worth. Cobain was a legend and I’m gutted I can never meet him.
@@dickshneeze4566 Not lack of ego. Lack of self worth.

His voice is fantastic here. Raw, raspy and everyone can feel it.

Couldn't been said any better.. one of a kind voice. It's very hard to match his voice. I been practicing singing many of his songs for 25 years now. Now I can almost mimec (where did you sleep last night) and many others. About a girl. Most people tell me that they can't tell the difference. Gives me goosebumps when I listen to him. Same here ... "where did you sleep last night" makes me crazy litterally ..
30 yrs today we lost a true musical icon. R I.P. the Almighty Kurt Cobain and Layne staley from almost a decade later. April 5th. A day of remembrance of two grunge gods from the 90s.
He walked off stage, the MTV producer said "They're cheering for an encore!" .. Kurt said, "There's no way I can top that." and the MTV guy said "You're right." and that was it.

This is definitely my favorite song on the whole album. You can just feel his raw emotion coming through when he starts scream singing My Girl! My Girl! So good!
Hands down. I say this ALL THE TIME. It gives me such a haunting feeling that stirs emotions in the weirdest way. It was and still is my absolute favorite cover done by my all time favorite performer & bands.
I hate screaming vocals. But When he screams it’s straight up chilling. The power he had. His magnetism. There will never be another.
Hes more like Creedence Clearwater, Screaming Jay Hawkings, James Brown, or some other older blues type, more than metal. One thing he did that few could, was a nice scratchy scream w emotion and on pitch, while also hitting vibrato. I think the youth of wrestling helped w his core, and the sedatives kinda helped him get into the scratchy voice breaking sound more easily.

We're about the same age, and it was the same for me. They were my #1 band in HS, in the days of great music magazines and MTV. Always had my cassettes and walkman for on the bus and at school. I was devastated when Cobain died. It was a huge loss to a 17 year old. One of those 'always remember where you were' when you heard moments. I couldn't listen to them for years and years after. The tragedy far outweighed the music for so long. Watching this now brings back those HS memories, of being sooooo excited to be able to watch this on cable at my best friend's grandma's house. Lol Kurt wouldn't know what to think it's no surprise it sold for that much that guitar is a price of history that I personally don't think it should be owned by anyone

But seriously, imagine what would happen if Kurt actually proceeded to smash the guitar.
I couldnt get out of bed for a couple days when he passed-how did 30 years disappear like this- this performance transports me to another dimension
30 years went by in the blink of an eye. It's funny how time works.
That man could steal your soul with a guitar and a microphone.
he already has.
He did
Done
I doubt he needed either
Beautiful soul.
4:49 his piercing blue eyes literally penetrate my soul as he takes that last deep breath, the intensity of his energy at that moment gets me every time
I agree
Such an Amazing moment
agreed
the intensity of the music...so what is he saying when he covers this song? You know he "did it" because people were idolizing him but had no clue what he was about...He hated fake fans, each one giving a different view of what they thought. When none of them had anything close to what he meant.
It shouldn't be like looking at Van Gough flowers and say he must have been having a nice day that day or how the flower represents hope and the desire to better ones self. But that would be to ignore Van Gough life and the true expressions he portrays. AKA fake fans, I don't entirely meant o suggest you don't know this stuff. But I see things like this and think these people have no idea what they are listening to and interpreting it so far from what its meaning is
it's like hes killing himself all over again
Agreed.
This song gives me chills..always has RIP Leadbelly, Kurt and MTV unPlugged. Every band absolutely gave their soul's to unplugged 💯
He was just a genuine person. People are always so amazed and filled with adoration. He was just a dcecent bloke with a tough life and a creative spirit. He absolutely deserved better, though.
When he opens his eyes just before he sings the last line, I come back to this video very often and it lives very rent free in my mind.
it's when him court were having their biggest problems yet, plus he was very sick with his addiction at this same moment 😟 only he knows what was going through his mind while singing this song at this moment of his life. We lost him a few months later
MY thoughts exactly...YOUR words said it BEST! 👍🏻👍🏻🤓
🖤🖤🖤
Yes it's an incredible moment.
Ik, I find that really funny and somehow cool😂
In 1993, Nirvana came to Rio - Brazil, I was in a hotel lobby with several kids waiting for the band and Kurt appeared, he didn't try to be Cool, Rock Star or any BS. He just sat on the floor and patiently start talking with us ... and there was the guy who changed the Music but who didn't change who he was! That afternoon, I will keep forever in memory!
That's a kick ass story to tell the grand-children.
Awesome story. What a legend. And a real one. Nothing fake about him...
Damn, that's an awesome story.
Do you are a brazilian too?
@@m00nAlchemist Yes, I'm Brazilian !
I remember taping this off the television back in the day, was truly a major moment of the 90s
I watched it in my friends basement one night before an important baseball game and I had it in my head that whole game. I hit a home run. I was a junior in high school. Good times.
Me too❤
The best live perfomance for my mind. Long live nirvana!
If Kurt knew what that guitar would end up selling for, he wouldve smashed it that very second.
No😊😊😊😊
@@randomhumanonearth777 Yes. Yes he would have.
@@justineseman3741no..he himself wanted to get a 500k guiter from one guiterist..here only he mentioned..the unplugged full version only ..he would be happy instead..don't make everything negative about him

@@randomhumanonearth777 My dude you do not understand Depression and Self Loathing at ALL.
$500k for Leadbelly’s guitar.
And the one he’s playing with, was sold for $6M.
Amazing.
I wonder where the guitar he played through unplugged is these days?
500k back then is very different to 500k now. 6million in todays money would be worth what back in the early 90's?
@@Jackson-pu7gd True, but even back in the 90's, 6 million today would be worth like 3 million, maybe a little more or less, but close to it, as the U.S. dollar is worth about half of what it was back in 1993. So, either way, Cobain's guitar ended up becoming much more valuable. $500k back then would likely be worth around a little less than 1 million today.
its just stupid no money in the world can bring him back
@@abdelhakwinston6200 Uh, nobody said it would, dumbass. We were talking about how much the man's guitar is worth. Do try to keep up if you're going to join a conversation.
I'm 53 and still shedding tears everytime this song ends
The vocals on this are amazing
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
Her husband, was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
The sun, shine
I would shiver the whole night through...

This is one of the greatest live songs in history. No doubt.
@Hunter Vonnegut trashy
It so perfectly encapsulates Kurt's brilliance. I can't think of another video that so perfectly captures the artist at his (musical) peak. The silence at the end is so telling. Everyone was just so blown away they couldn't even speak.

Absolutely .. Up there with Eric claptons acoustic version of Layla .
that last note he hits, where his face contorts and his eyes get big,,, gives me goosebumps and makes me 😢 everytime. Kurt was my best friend, my dad, and my idol as a kid...when he was murdered i almost lost my way. thank god i pulled out of my depression and now i use nirvana as a reminder of a point in my life i never wanna re live
Can you imagine if this was never recorded. We would have lost a priceless treasure forever.
And not even know it.
I think a lot of magical thing that we just dont know but we cant know it because it never happen i dont know if you understand😂.
Imagine all the good music that will never be recorded like this because of what MTV has turned into. It’s all absolute trash now.
