It baffles me how Layne could sing like this knowing he was probably sick a lot of the times and they say he always gave 110 percent. As a former H addict this blows my mind. I guess true talent cannot be stopped by anything
Well, this was recorded when he was in the "h really is a great drug" stage. I'm not sure, but I doubt he shot up back then. Even if he did, since you where an addict too, you know what it felt like when the drug still worked for you and you thought everything is under control. It took Layne a few more years to realize he's sick and that's when the live performances either lacked the energy and greatness of this one or where canceled. My point, it does not surprise me he put up that performance although he was probably wasted.

Jerry can lay down the meanest riffs as good or as close to Tony Iommi or play a solo with the most feel like David Gilmour can not to mention he's an incredible songwriter as evidenced in AIC and his solo albums. He has that rare ability of being a good guitarist and composer but he never overdoes the riffs or solos. They're always tasteful - its what the song needs.

Jerry Cantrell"s guitar tone is absolute perfection and his performance is legendary. His contribution is so often overshadowed by Layne Staley's vocal work because it is masterful to say the least. To those of us that claim Rick and roll to be ours, this band and the music they created is a gift indeed. I am very grateful and fortunate to have seen them live several times.
Damn, I am so jealous.. I, unfortunately, never got to see them live.. pretty much because I was born in 1985, so I was only 10 when they were pretty much done touring, and everything. I do want to go and see Alice in Chains now, with the new singer. Of course no where near as good as Layne, but still pretty good. I really like the, "Black gives way to blue", song they did with Elton John on the piano.. which made it that much more awesome...
@@chrisdowning6396 I never gave any thought to the 'new' AIC, but I have to tell you, I listened to Rainier Fog (2018 release) once all the way through and it didn't leave my home audio system for a good 3 months. It's a very good album. Jerry Cantrell is a fabulous musician and songwriter that is often skipped over because he happened to team up with arguably the best vocalist of all time.
Some of his beats are fairly simple but a lot of times he'll throw out some really tight and technical stuff, I'm a drummer and still mess up the hi-hat/tom combo from "Head Creeps"
Agreed. But the quality that gets me is how explosive his voice is. It's like the gates to another, faster dimension bursts open and a prolonged energy spills out. Not spills, it's like a constant attack of raw energy released at such force that it obliterates everything. I can't explain it properly. It's the sudden-ness of his vocal attack that is amazing to me. And it just doesn't stop until he says it stops.
+helen clarke Whoaaa, you look a lot like my girlfriend like so much that it's a little scary lol but she hates pink so besides the pink hoodie it's pretty spot on.
It was Jerry and Sean. They were living in Layne's place at the time and they were auditioning a bunch of guys who apparently were horrible. Finally Layne said "fuck it, I'll do it". Jerry and Sean said that in a recent interview.
It's pretty weird thinking of them as Alice N' Chains though..a hair/glam metal band. Layne always killed it though. Even when the guys were frustrated and heartbroken over his addiction driven decline, they didn't want anyone else. It's just not AIC without Layne. I love Jerry but...I'm purely a Layne-era only fan
Layne Staley had an incredible voice. It pains me to see how many people don't know who this sweet angel was, and still is. A sweet soul, with a gift that helped me from one of the deepest depressions I've ever experienced. I lost my whole family from cancer and this man, Jerry, Sean, and Mike helped me process my pain and loss. I love all you guys. You've saved so many people's lives. I hope you know this. I can completly relate to what your saying about this music helping you through difficult times. They are my favourite band for this very reason, music can be powerfull healing stuff!! So sorry for your loss
Layney and Chris Cornell were the greatest voices in rock in the 90s and one of the greatest voices in music in general. They are gods of music, talent, mastery, range and vocal techniques of the highest levels.
i love how layne sings with his whole body. His voice was so powerful bc it was full of emotion. He didn't sing for attention and fame; he sang for the pure artistry of it. RIP sweet angel. I hope you and Demri are happy together
I literally only just gave AIC a chance about an hour ago. I can’t believe I was born in 1990 Have my taste in music & am only just hearing Layne. This dude is insanely good. This band is incredible. As a ridiculous understatement! 😅
Few singers can actually make screaming work, musically. Of that few, Layne was the best. He knew what he was doing and it was his art. His sound was glorious.
Great. Call it whatever you like. I would call it singing, of course, but there are various forms of singing. I think you know what I'm referring to. In any case, I did highly compliment Mr. Staley's "screaming."
This performance alone should put Alice in Chains in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Layne created the entire genre of copycats. he is flawless. Before this I was totally 80s metal priest Maiden Sabbath the list goes on. Layne Staley should never be forgotten cuz his impact is so evident and so many bands that tried to emulate his sound, but could never even come close!!!
Can never forgive Jerry for that. The AIC name should have been retired at Layne's death. No question. AIC would have been in the R&R hall of fame long before now.
@@nolanola2chi93 It wasn't Layne's band. A band isn't one person. Not only that, but they did stop playing for a long time after him and when they returned they were admant that Layne would be upset if they didn't continue and that it took them so long to do so. On top of that, the rock and roll hall of fame is such a joke now.
Thanks for saying that Pld1220! Layne’s life experience and the music and performances he left are changing my point of view in life. He helps me to change my mind and heal my self! I thank you and everyone who’s keeping Layne alive in this world remembering him.

Well, I think it's stupid to constantly compare the two, they are totally different bands, same ganre but different messages and perspective, only thing they got in common is that they belong to grunge..
I feel that Layne is quite overlooked when people talk about "The greatest singers" He should be in at least the top 10 in every one of those lists, top three if you ask me!
Ola Mola Yes of course, I have personally always thought that Alice In Chains is over all a better band than Nirvana, tho Nirvana is an amazing band with increadable musicians, Alice In Chains is just a little bit better. In my opinion at least

It started snowing 2 days prior tothe show and there were literally 2 and a half feet ofsnow on the ground when meand 3 of my best friends started our journey to the show. we left my house at10 in the morning and arrived 9 hours later to a show that changed my life forever!!! miss u everyday Lane
This song is just so complex. It's very minimalistic with the music and the empty space that is filled by the power, range, and melody of Layne's voice. Layne could sing this in a foreign language and you'd still know exactly what this song was about. It's easy to use hyperbole when not appropriate ... but in this case, it's an understatement to say that this song at this concert is just brilliant and beautiful. This is a song that only a handful of singers could actually sing.
His voice could turn mountains to sand. EDIT: The part that really sends chills down my spine is the moment before the breakdown (05:00), when he lowers his head and takes the mic off the stand. You can SEE him gathering his anguish and power to unleash that howl of thunder at the end of the song.
Layne was one of the best for sure. And one of my favorites no doubt.. but no way, no how is he the undisputed greatest vocalist in rock history. He's also rivaled by another vocalist from the same era...Chris Cornell. RIP to both of them made such beautiful music.
That's just your opinion, there are so many other good singers, some of them even better than Layne, and but... but.... but.... Nah, i can't win this argument. You are right.
Layne was truly in a league of his own. The kind of vocal sound so many other singers tried to emulate. Layne just did it effortlessly. He didn't have to try to sound dark or tortured, that was just his natural voice. I miss him so much.
You are thinking with your heart to claim Layne for issues and not with your head. In terms of vocal technique, Cornell reached 6-8 octaves and he could climb 4 feet in only one song like Beyond The Weel he was one of the greatest singers in terms of vocal technique, outside that his voice is a factor of the junction of 4 dimensions: range, power, volume and depth. His vocals were so amazing that even women who have an ease in reaching the tones, had difficulty checking out the tribute they did to him. Cornell was blessed by the universe, his voice is one of the most powerful that exists and this is undeniable in terms of talent as a vocalist.

Yes. Just ah mazing vocals here.
Mike Starr wrote his name in my little black book.
He also wrote
Alice in Chains as I met him before he was - famous.
RIP - Layne & Mike
Probably one of the greatest vocal performances ever, not just in rock, but of all time.
Soundtallica in Chains agreed.

I'm a Maynard fan for vocals .. But Layne is so amazing in this video.. heart wrenching and an amazing live performance. So sad to lose to lose such a talented man.
I totally agree
5:25 Layne screaming love hate love while Jerry is thrashing, this is the most Rock thing I've seen in a while
Gonna have to get that tattood on me
It's insanely powerful. Pure magic there.
Fuck yeah man
How can you miss someone so much who you never even met? Rest easy Layne, Rest easy Mike
I completely agree makes my heart hurt
Ooh
I tried to love you
I thought I could
I tried to own you
I thought I would
I want to peel the skin from your face
Before the real you lays to waste
You told me I'm the only one
Sweet little angel
You should have run
Lying, crying, dying to leave
Innocence creates my hell
Cheating myself
Still, you know more
It would be so easy
With a whore
Try to understand me, little girl
My twisted passion to be your world
Lost inside my sick head
I live for you but I'm not alive
Take my hand before I kill
I still love you, but, I still burn

Try listening to Dax Riggs from Acid Bath. Deadboy and The Elephantman as well as Agents of Oblivion. Both are great bands he was a part of, cheers
Layne's voice has to be the most beautiful sound ever.
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
ua-cam.com/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/v-deo.html&pp=ygUQYmV5b25kIHRoZSB3ZWxsIA%3D%3D
Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.
It baffles me how Layne could sing like this knowing he was probably sick a lot of the times and they say he always gave 110 percent. As a former H addict this blows my mind. I guess true talent cannot be stopped by anything
Ditto on the former H thing....playing is the last thing I could do when sick, and I had a guitar to hide behind. This dude is up there naked
@@jacencib that's a good point.
It can take a while to get hooked, depending on how often you'll use
@@ceebee491 not even get hooked. Just realize it’s a problem. That little bit that got you there last year has now tripled. I was very functional for years then it just consumed me later on. @@ceebee491 I could work all day and never touch it until I got home. Eventually I would start to get sick by lunch and need it. If I didn’t have it I would be super uncomfortable until I got home

Josh Hernandez Him and Tony Iommi are gods to me. They both heavily influence my playing style.
Israel rodrigue,,, ,, love , hate , love live,, has to be one of the best rock shows i ever lived,,
Jerry can lay down the meanest riffs as good or as close to Tony Iommi or play a solo with the most feel like David Gilmour can not to mention he's an incredible songwriter as evidenced in AIC and his solo albums. He has that rare ability of being a good guitarist and composer but he never overdoes the riffs or solos. They're always tasteful - its what the song needs.

ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS, VOCALIST AND SONGS EVER WRITTEN. I WAS AT THIS SHOW ON ACID AND IT WAS THE SINGLE GREATEST EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD. LAYNE NEVER MISSED A NOTE AND THAT'S SOMETHING TO BE SAID COS HIS SONGS ARE THE VERY BEST VOCALS. JERRY IS ONLY BETTER LIVE.
Watching this really makes me realize how good musically talented bands were im the 90s and how horrible music is today. Long live layne
Today’s music is mass produced crap.
@@groovygrovejuiceco1760 That's a lie, today's music is not crap, just the comercial stuff, but there are hidden bands around with genuine good music that aren't getting recognized.

Epic Layne Staley right here
you got that right
I just found this... it's beyond words. He is transcendent. I deeply regret that I'll never have the chance to hear him sing live.

Pfft who gives a fuck man... Rolling stone magazine are beyond a joke
I wouldn't care to much about rolling stone mag, It's what we say, have a look how many views their video man in a box has, amazing!! Kurt and Layne are both great front men, one punk, one rock, Layne, I think has a great voice, better than that Guns and poses dick
Odd considering he's ranked high in most influential rock voices before and considered to have the best vocals outta the Seattle sound movement and Kurt has the least best vocals his voice is only different Kurt couldn't necessarily sing.

Hetfield may be king of "Yeah"'s but Layne is a God of them
Lil John 😉😉😉
Jerry looks to his right behind Layne to Mike in a kind of "fuck me are you hearing this dude 😲" kind of look
Sean is such an underrated drummer....
Joe Taylor Unplugged album really displays his talent too.
Joe Taylor Agreed!
Best rock drummer ever for my money. I listened to a clip of Jerry playing with another drummer...sounded like a lounge act by comparison.
Some of his beats are fairly simple but a lot of times he'll throw out some really tight and technical stuff, I'm a drummer and still mess up the hi-hat/tom combo from "Head Creeps"
He’s fucking awesome....🤘
my god his voice was perfection!
this live version is so damn clean. layne's vocals were so powerful
What makes Layne so exceptional as a vocalist is his holding the note out on key with control
Layne at his peak!!!! This is epic!!! The entire live at the moore performance is pure perfection!! 💙💙

Imagine you are a Seattle band in the late 80's looking for a singer. Let's audition this Layne guy.
CBDM777 If he begins like 5:22, the audition ends in 30s and he's got the job.
IM pretty sure him and Jerry started the band.
It was Jerry and Sean. They were living in Layne's place at the time and they were auditioning a bunch of guys who apparently were horrible. Finally Layne said "fuck it, I'll do it". Jerry and Sean said that in a recent interview.
CBDM777 it’s insane to think of what came out of Seattle in the early 90’s
I love AIC forever 🖤💙

As AMAZING as this is, I think it's better suited for vol.2 of my introduction for my daughter Weiland Layne to her namesakes.
Few singers can actually make screaming work, musically. Of that few, Layne was the best. He knew what he was doing and it was his art. His sound was glorious.
Anotheryou21 true that weird.. Layne is one of the best of all time for sure
Check out Snot - The Box, one of the most impressive screams of all time.
Anotheryou21 I don't call putting power into your vocals "screaming" it's called singing.
Great. Call it whatever you like. I would call it singing, of course, but there are various forms of singing. I think you know what I'm referring to. In any case, I did highly compliment Mr. Staley's "screaming."
Anotheryou21 Chris Cornell s vocals are amaze balls too! But I love Layne!
Lanyne’s intense guts into his out-of-this-universe voice plus Cantrell’s guitar artistry..... to die from.
Layne has the best yeahs of all time cant prove me wrong
This performance alone should put Alice in Chains in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Layne created the entire genre of copycats. he is flawless. Before this I was totally 80s metal priest Maiden Sabbath the list goes on. Layne Staley should never be forgotten cuz his impact is so evident and so many bands that tried to emulate his sound, but could never even come close!!!
Can never forgive Jerry for that. The AIC name should have been retired at Layne's death. No question. AIC would have been in the R&R hall of fame long before now.
They won't ever hit the HOF because of Layne's OD. Shitty move but that's the sad reality of it, and YES, AIC does belong in the HOF.
@@nolanola2chi93 Jerry kept AIC going to honor Layne's memory, u can't blame him for that.

I can’t say that I wouldn’t fall victim to that sort of lifestyle. He lived hard and fast man. RIP Layne . Wish I could have seen you in person
How did all that range, emotion, and noise come out of such a little man? Damn!
Layne was 6 feets tall. He wasn't a little man!
Leo Fh pretty sure she meant his weight. He was a long boi

EDIT: The part that really sends chills down my spine is the moment before the breakdown (05:00), when he lowers his head and takes the mic off the stand. You can SEE him gathering his anguish and power to unleash that howl of thunder at the end of the song.
His voice was amazing I wished he was still around I could only imagine
Greatest vocalist in rock history. Period. End of Story.
J Wil who is ?
Art Vandelay8771 agree 100%
Layne was one of the best for sure. And one of my favorites no doubt.. but no way, no how is he the undisputed greatest vocalist in rock history. He's also rivaled by another vocalist from the same era...Chris Cornell. RIP to both of them made such beautiful music.
James Romano I love Chris but I have to agree that Layne was better
