Clear instructions, no background noise or unnecessary music, you speak in full sentences, no vocal fry or uptalk….. Such basic things but many youtubers create videos that are horrid and so absurd with this stuff they are unhelpful. Thank you!
Thank you. I followed another cleaning tutorial (just washing in the sink without taking the long filter apart. When I put everything back together after drying out, I started getting the pulsing right away. When I took the filter apart a big wad of hair was wadded up in narrow part of the filter. Once it was removed, it ran like a champion! I thought I had managed to damage something during cleaning, but this did the trick. Thank you for taking the time to share it!
Thank you so much for sharing this; for me it was cleaning the back filter which fixed the pulsing problem. I've realised it's not pulsing - but gasping as it can't breathe properly! But of course they won't because people buy new ones.... sooner than they need to. Dyson's laughing at us...
Thank you so much. You've just saved me a few hundred pounds. Took the blue filter apart and it was FULL of dust. We used to regularly rinse the filter, but had no idea it came apart - wish they'd put that in the manual!
Thank you for this! We just bought a new vacuum because our Dyson v6 was pulsing. But before I dumped they Dyson (which as been rubbish for ages) I found this video on UA-cam. I have given the Dyson a reprieve and now we have two vacuums, both of which are working well.

I had no idea there were filters in the back and separating the filter housing from the motor to get to inspect the fan blades. I found a little clump of dense fluff gumming up everything. Scrubbed everything clean now, plenty of suction, and no pulsing 😂 I'm going to keep it for the cars or for when her new shark gives up the ghost and is stuffed with all her hair. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'd much rather muck about and clean and fix something than replace (unlike my wife)
I love dyson. Theu just sent me a replacement battery and head attachment. Very happy with their warranty and cs. Its rare to deal w a company that does roght by you. That is why I'll always have dyson.
This is actually one of the few videos that does suggest to remove the lid/cover of the fabric triangular/funnel shape filter. Thumbs up! I recommend vacumm the inside of it and to use a brush to loose the dirt trapped inside. Never to run water inside the filter as that will push dirt further inside increasing the likelihood of clogged filter. If filter to be washed, flush water only the outside of the filter.
You saved my vacuum. I found it far easier to actually take off the round part on back of motor first then bottom clip on handle pulled right out. Once cleaned dirty filter runs on high no problem now. Thanks for good video.
Absolutely fabulous...i thiught I would be buying new vac,,but followed your troubleshooting instructions. And unscrewed the "mystery filter" and mine looked just like yours, washed it and let it dry..and voilla...perfect suction..you should get an oscar...fantastic..
I bought a big barrel Dyson in 2005 and fell in love with it. It was a revelation after the regular one I had previously. 12 years down the track and it went kaput so I bought a V7. Worst mistake I ever made. It is dreadful. Doesn’t pick up anything that is larger than dust or possibly rice sized bits and pieces, gives 6 minutes of good suction before it throws in the towel so you have to use low suction mode to get the house done and it’s a bugger to clean properly. The battery died about 6 months ago and I have just bitten the bullet and bought a new one at $89. I am very grateful for your video but once this one dies permanently, I’m getting a different brand.
Thank you so much. I was looking for a video like this a few months ago. I bought new purple filters but I could not get the back off to see what was inside. I figured it was so difficult it wasn’t meant to be removed so it must be the battery. I was about to buy a new battery when I stumbled on your video, followed all your instructions and now it’s working perfectly again.
Help! I took the back filter off Dyson DC59, the middle one had perished into bits on removal. I can't seem to find another replacement online? Any ideas, thanks, Sharon
Thank you, my son gave me his dyson as it did not work. However, after watching your video it is now very clean and works fine, thank you for the free hoover!
Thank you for this video. It does take a certain kind of confidence to try to get the bigger filter off, though. I would be terrified of breaking something. It doesn't seem as though it is meant to come off, even though it clearly is.
It was never designed to be serviced in this manner. It was designed for manufacturing (life of the machine). That's why it's so difficult to take apart.
Another thing you could do if you use an air purifier is to remove the after-filters completely. My mother the pulse issue with her v8 and wanted me to swap the battery out, I just took her HEPA filter off, threw it, handed the unit back to her working fine, and suggested she replace the hepa filter with a new one. Dyson says to wash them, but they eventually clog with microscopic particles so I've recently removed the filter material from mine completely and the hepa cover now functions solely as an exhaust deflector more than doubling my battery life until I can organise a 3D printable kit for adapting v6 and v7 to v8 hepa units, and a 3d printable hepa unit delete that looks similar, but exhausts out one side with minimal restriction to deflect the sound and hot air instead of blasting you in the face with it like you get from just taking the hepa unit off.
Now here's a video that, until today, had escaped me. The commentary is succinct, straight to the point, and clearly spoken. My thanks. A little tip that I use is that when I am giving the dust container a clear-out, I use a small garden blower (a Makita cordless) to blow out the dust from the large filter. Thanks once more.
It's not designed to be removed. It's there to catch carbon particles that are created from the motor spinning. If the pre-motor filter is looked after properly and bin isn't constantly filled past the max capacity then this won't happen.
Thanks for the location of the second filter. Amen to previous commenter on the nicks getting the back off - I mangled mine pretty good but cut the damage off with a utility knife and sanded it smooth. In the end my back filter was not very dirty confirming that a new battery will fix it. It is pulsing and does not seem to hold a charge. That's consistent with having owned it for many years but only giving it light use. Given the cost of new ones here in Australia, I'll consider a Mikita stick vac - which lacks the rotating head, or take a punt on one of the US$200 stick vacs on Ali Express.
I’m just sitting here with my jaw dropped to the floor here’s why I have a Dyson v6 always pulsing bloody had enough of it then without doing any searching on you tube or watching any other content from this guy his video pops up on my feed and solves my problem, I’ll give it a go and let you know thank you so much.
Good video. The stripped-down tubular/sock filter sometimes needs more than a clean under the tap. The dust really does get impacted at the bottom and needs worrying out. What a fine piece of design Dyson has made of the filter housing sitting over the controller board! You made flipping the cover look straightforward, but I ended up with a few nicks along the edges: a simple notch at the join under the screw would've done it, or make the end piece separate with a partial twist catch. If it is not a user-maintainable part, then that is deliberate built-in obsolescence because the dust does build up and you get the short circuit error light which renders the unit unusable. (Hopefully the new UK Right-To-Repair legislation will put paid to that nonsense.)
It has ended. The design flaw that you speaking of is no longer there. Dyson have totally changed the design of their cordless machines. The control board is now nowhere near the filters.
Japheth Stevens: I am a 73 yr old woman, who owns a Dyson stick vacuum. Watching the difficulty and force required to get into one of the filters is not impressive. Dyson should redesign that product or set up a team to whom we can periodically send our vacuum to be properly cleaned. But I guess, that could prolong the life of the appliance, which means less sales?
Thanks for the video this was helpful in opening the rear filter, which is easier on some other models. Is there a link for replacing the rear filter itself - mine has disintegrated.
Glad to watch this video in 2021. You saved me a replacement. I have replaced two batteries until I saw this video. The second battery was not necessarily dumped if I had seen this earlier. Thank you!
Great advice! I don't have the strength to be able to prise either of the parts apart - any suggestions to loosen them? I tried the small screwdriver and only managed to punch a hole in my finger.
My Dyson V6 has been pulsating on max for a while so I could only use it on low. I almost threw it away and bought another brand, but I thought I would check You Tube and I am glad I did! Another video I watched first showed me how to clean the long blue center filter. But your video went even further and showed me how to get into the long blue filter as I was having huge chunks of debris coming out of it and couldn't figure out how to get inside the filter. Thank you for a very thorough video. I just washed the filter now I am going to take it apart and make sure all the debris is out of it. Your video is great.
Thxn mate, that second filter is key indeed! The center one was complete pulp, and fell appart when i tried to wash it. Can it function with only the semi circular filter?
I found that after cleaning the first filter it wasn't working still, then I found that there was a bit of stuff stuck where the motor unit attaches to the stick/wand part. It wasn't tightly packed in but it wasn't budging, once I removed it it worked like new again. I'm glad i didn't mess around with the second harder filter.
on the later v6 they fitted a replaceable hepa filter as released it gets clogged up. now the v6 is getting on the Early ones with the foam filter shown are getting very clogged up. I'm going to do a video showing how to upgrade to the hepa filter next week.
Yay, thank you for such a helpful video, it fixed my pulsing issue!!! What a nightmare trying to take apart the different filter covers though, Dyson needs to improve on that!
Thank you in advance. You brought me some good news to tell me that I can encourage longer intervals and longer run life simply by being aware of these filters and how to clean better. Cheers and good day!😊
Let's just start out by saying I was wearing a white robe when I took apart my v6, lol. I've had my v6 many years and I do clean it every so often, but I never took the back filter off covering the circuit board. It was pristine, nothing like the dirt yours had. I use it almost daily too...strange. Good video, I enjoyed it!
The smaller black foam filter in the back is completely perished .. have looked on numerous Dyson spares websites and can't seem to find a replacement .. any ideas? Thanks for a very helpful video!
Here they sell foam filters for bigger hoovers in Electronics shops. Maybe take along the old filter and try to find one of similar quality? Then cut a new Dyson-sized filter from the big filter. :-)
I have a V6. I knew about the tubular filter (though wow! what a struggle it is to extract for cleaning! - the other looks no better) but had no idea about the other one. Thanks. I'm off to wrestle with it now....
Brilliant! I didn't realise you could dismantle the filter. Ours was completely blocked with months of gunk - I wouldn't work under those conditions either ;-)
Good video thanks for keeping it straightforward. Love this vacuum sometimes but other times it won’t even pick up sand on the lower setting and my eye starts to twitch 😂
Oops, I took off the back part to clean the other filter and the doughnut-shaped part just disintegrated in my fingers. Can’t decide whether to just leave it out or try to replace it with some sort of fine sponge-type material. The trick of taking apart the top filter is genius - I think I just replaced my battery when all I needed to do was deep-clean that filter!
if you look through my videos I show how to upgrade the rear filter to the later hepa type for about £12 there's a link in the description for it. otherwise a washing up sponge works perfectly.
Excellent video, why don't Dyson customer service provide this instruction when you call them advising that your main overhead filter is clogged? Just saying! BTW Thanks heaps.
Thanks for sharing some helpful maintenance tips. I own the same unit and the battery seems to drain rapidly during use especially under max power setting. I would reconnect the charger until the solid blue indicator light appears usually within seconds then disconnect charger and unit would restart again. I would have to do this repeatedly to clean the entire room which becomes a nuissance. Is this a sign of a dying battery pack or some other issue eg, faulty power switch?
it's the battery pack. the battery management board is cutting power because a cell is in the battery pack is draining quicker than the others. newer battery packs the BMS will just stop it working after doing the quick charge and restarts. I have a link to new batteries below the video and I have a video showing how to replace the battery.
@@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT Thanks for your swift reply and suggestion. I presume any compatible Lithium pack with similar rating will suffice (Dyson charges 3x more)? The rear filters are difficult to access without scratching the plastic cover. Need to get myself a plastic pry tool such as yours.👍
Also any ideas for the motorised mini brush? I cannot get the brush out like the floor head. I know stuff is wound around the end making it resistant to spinning.
Yeah. Just use the stupid coin method to open the end..where you see the slot on the side of the head. From there it pops right open. All the vac heads open that same ridiculous way. Eventually the coin wears out that plastic slot and makes you hate them even more 🤣🤣
Hi very useful video, even with this I still struggled to get that back casing off, once removed unfortunately I discovered that the inner ring of the motor filter was totally dissintegrated. I called Dyson who said I could not buy this part. They said it is an anti static foam so not to make a new one with other foam but the machine would work ok without it. Any ideas about where to buy this special foam so I can make my own would be welcome. Thanks
@@scottjohnston804 I really wouldn't worry this is my oldest machine which I only use for the workshop. I did a clever thing with Dyson engineer he was able to see the part I meant through my phone camera. He clearly said do not use another foam because a static spark could melt another type of foam, as long as the outer ring filter is ok it should be fine to use. My old machine works fine without it. I do have two other Dyson handhelds, wouldn't buy anything else. The newer machines come with a replaceable post filter.
Omg thank u. Mine also disintegrated. I’ve been using my Dyson without it still but it’s been bothering me knowing i didn’t replace it. I cannot find replacement. I guess it is what it is. :(
When I followed this video and washed the two filters in water, the inner (foam) one disintegrated. Dyson wouldn't supply a replacement except in a whole new motor unit priced at more than £65, and told me they did not sanction opening the back of this motor unit. The only other option they suggested was try to get the foam bit from an old broken unit. I've had to make one from an old foam sponge. These filters clean the exhaust, so the machine should work fine without them if the pre-filter and bin are collecting the dust.
just found this out too, to my cost....literally! although filters weren't really dirty the inner doughnut shaped one just completely disintegrated in my hand...still, cheaper than a new machine i guess, but not thrilled with Dyson not selling this little filter as a spare!
just replace it with the upgrade heppa Filter. I did a video on it, it's cheap and easy to replace. I've used washing up sponge to make Filter out of without any issues. why would you get static in a foam filter? amzn.to/3VBw3aZ
Man that is great video, I just had a v7 i finding in dumpsters the only part missing was the charger in expecting by mail had some charge In the battery so work, uts was a piece of plastic blocking the motor head fix it Now I can give a good maintenance too it. Thanks
Just took ours completely apart like in this guide, yuck, gave it a thorough wash out with water on the filters, I never knew you could take that long one apart like that, it was really blocked, and I used my air blower on all the other parts. Not too difficult to prise it apart. I did take photos of that back filter though so I know how to put it back in once it’s all dry.
Never knew of the rear filter, what bloody awful design, nearly chucked mine away as could not stop it pulsing. I will try to get this rear filter out now, but does not look as if Dyson intended users to do this.....very strange product design?
My sentiments precisely. Absolutely ridiculous!! I can see many breakages trying to pull the rear filter out. Mine stops after about 30 seconds..drives me nuts. It’s only 18 months old and I regularly clean the normal filter.. poor design I think
It's not designed to be removed. It's there to catch carbon particles that are created from the motor spinning. If the pre-motor filter is looked after properly and bin isn't constantly filled past the max capacity then this won't happen.
Hi, great vid - very useful, thanks. However, even stripped down as far as you suggest, my V6 STILL pulses. Is there any way of dismantling it further - i.e. getting 'behind' the circuit board? It looks tricky as it seems to be glued into place.
hi thanks so much for the info. on the 2nd filter the long one round the edge i cleaned but the small middle spongy one fell to be all sticky so can not find a replacement for that will this matter ? no pulsing anymore new 1st filter added .
Great video but was a little disappointed that you didn’t go through how to reassemble. I had a little difficulty getting it put back together again. 🙄🙄
Nice video but you missed the flap on the entrance to the dust collector.. I had taken my Dyson apart as per your video but it still pulsed ! Simply freeing the flap on the circular entrance tube fixed the pulsing .
I fixed mine stopping and starting by cleaning the cone filter there was a clump of hard dust at the bottom of it. However the battery now cuts out after about 5 seconds after a full charge. Do I need a new battery? It's odd that before I 'fixed' it, it would run for about 5-10 muinutes (until I hit the turbo button), so why the battery blinking like it's empty after a few seconds now?
this was halfway helpful my dyson is slightly different than your but i think my fan blade is not rotating and my electrical board is filthy. now i need to find a video on how to open up fan blade compartment to clean it out
I've got one of the dysons and I would not give it to my worst enemy. Doesn't charge for long enough, not enough room in handle for bigger hands, and it is just too much messing about. My best vacuum ever was a Panasonic upright. Brilliant. Till my dog chewed it up. 😁
Hi. I followed all your instructions and managed to give my V6 an awesome clean. However, the small filter (donut shape) in the back literally disintegrated. I have been in touch with Dyson (in Australia) except that part cannot be bought. I have to purchase the whole back section @ $120. I have had a look online & cannot find anything similar to this filter. Just wondering if you have any information, thoughts or suggestions on where I could find one or maybe use instead of? Thank you.
Hi! My back filter was disintegrated and I can’t find a replacement any idea what foam I could get to make my own or can you recommend a place that will send to aust. Thanks for the vid

Hi! Great vid! The filter on the back, the black donut. Mine came all apart so I need to replace it but I can’t find the replacement filter. Any leads on where I can buy one?
I should add we have a dog and the nay thing I’ve ever changed on my Dyson V6 has Animal has been the battery and the brush head roller bar! I got it from Dyson once in a Black Friday deal, it may be expensive but it has lasted this long.

Your video is great.
so glad it helped you out.
Thanks! Will have fun with this later! 😷
Finally found the video with ALL the answers I needed!
Thanks!
Thxn mate, that second filter is key indeed! The center one was complete pulp, and fell appart when i tried to wash it. Can it function with only the semi circular filter?
just chop up a washing up sponge and use that. but yes it will still work with the filter just won't catch all the fine dust.
@@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT thxn a bunch! Also have a botched battery unfortunately. Thanks again!
Thanks for this. I've been fighting that end cap all day after cleaning everything else. The lego tool for stubborn bricks works a treat.
It's not a filter as such and isn't designed to be removed.
@@walruspolish it definitely didn't look like it should be messed with, and I'm glad I didn't.
on the later v6 they fitted a replaceable hepa filter as released it gets clogged up. now the v6 is getting on the Early ones with the foam filter shown are getting very clogged up. I'm going to do a video showing how to upgrade to the hepa filter next week.
Fantastic,, I never new that it had that secondary filter!
Mine has been pulsing for bloody ages!
many thanks - great informative video, no unnecessary music and direct and clear information.
Yay, thank you for such a helpful video, it fixed my pulsing issue!!! What a nightmare trying to take apart the different filter covers though, Dyson needs to improve on that!
i installed a rear motor housing from a V6 with the HEPA filter. now i upgraded mine to replaceable rear filters. pretty cheap on Ali :)
Thank you, i knew they had a second filter, now i know how to clean it.
Great information. I would never remember how to put it back together without the video. Lol
Thank you! I didn’t know about the second filter.
Exactly what i needed-to clean the back filter
The smaller black foam filter in the back is completely perished .. have looked on numerous Dyson spares websites and can't seem to find a replacement .. any ideas? Thanks for a very helpful video!
Here they sell foam filters for bigger hoovers in Electronics shops. Maybe take along the old filter and try to find one of similar quality? Then cut a new Dyson-sized filter from the big filter. :-)
Was about to go get a replacement!!! Top man
I have a V6. I knew about the tubular filter (though wow! what a struggle it is to extract for cleaning! - the other looks no better) but had no idea about the other one. Thanks. I'm off to wrestle with it now....
Thanks for this ! The hot air was coming on smelly on my vaccum ( bought it used ) and I was trying to figure out how to get to the back filter
this new video will definitely help you out then.

Excellent 👍 I just wish I'd watched this before buying my new dyson - oh well at least I've got a back up now 🙄😂👏👏👏
best demonstration to clean Dyson V6 V7 v8
😂🤣😂 I’m so glad someone else knows how I feel about this too!!! That analogy was hilarious!
Brilliant, very clear instructions. Thank you.
Excellent video, why don't Dyson customer service provide this instruction when you call them advising that your main overhead filter is clogged? Just saying!
BTW Thanks heaps.
You made it look so easy to remove the back filter
Very much helped me out‼️ no one mentions the two rear filters ….. I’ve just subscribed and liked - you deserve it
Thanks for the video. I did not know about the filter in the motor head. Have a nice day.
check out my latest video to get your dyson working like it did the day you purchased it.
I haven't taken the small head apart so not sure. I do have a small head so could do a video in the future on it.
@@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT awesome.
Thanks
I am having the same problem. Dyson wants me to replace the entire motor. Going to see if the auto parts store has a solution
@@gabrielleadams8542 Thank you for posting this. I will reassemble without the inner.
Omg thank u. Mine also disintegrated. I’ve been using my Dyson without it still but it’s been bothering me knowing i didn’t replace it. I cannot find replacement. I guess it is what it is. :(
Very helpful! Easy to listen to - no background noise. Thanks!
Thank you do much for these little secret cleaning methods, now away to clean my dodgy Dyson ❤
These filters clean the exhaust, so the machine should work fine without them if the pre-filter and bin are collecting the dust.
just found this out too, to my cost....literally! although filters weren't really dirty the inner doughnut shaped one just completely disintegrated in my hand...still, cheaper than a new machine i guess, but not thrilled with Dyson not selling this little filter as a spare!
it's just a foam filter you can buy filter foam on amazon and cut it to size.
@@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT people were saying you can’t because of static and has to be exact type that?? I’m confused now
just replace it with the upgrade heppa Filter. I did a video on it, it's cheap and easy to replace. I've used washing up sponge to make Filter out of without any issues.
why would you get static in a foam filter? amzn.to/3VBw3aZ
Great video, straight to the point, direct and logical. Tyvm
After every use, I give cleaner a really good dust out using leaf blower.
Still going like a champion after 6 years
After every use? Really?
Or by another brand with greater durability that doesn't need nursing
@@riven99uk buy
Man that is great video, I just had a v7 i finding in dumpsters the only part missing was the charger in expecting by mail had some charge In the battery so work, uts was a piece of plastic blocking the motor head fix it Now I can give a good maintenance too it. Thanks
if this video helped you out please consider hitting the super thanks button to help me out.
super helpfull
Just took ours completely apart like in this guide, yuck, gave it a thorough wash out with water on the filters, I never knew you could take that long one apart like that, it was really blocked, and I used my air blower on all the other parts. Not too difficult to prise it apart. I did take photos of that back filter though so I know how to put it back in once it’s all dry.
Thank you for video. I have a similar problem with my Bissell Pet vacuum. It's great but I had to get creative on maintenance.
I did not know about that filter in the middle just give it a good clean, so thank you for that information 👍👍👌👌
It seems like it would be easy to break. I pushed in on the tab instead of up on the thin plastic strip holding it.
Can’t buy spare ones either, buy a new one they said, disgraceful.
@@andrewwhyte3979 yes you can . Amazon.
You’re right it’s disgraceful dyson does not sell them!
i have just filmed a new video showing everything. thanks for the comment 👍
Superb video, opened my eyes to how easy it is to fix problems with the Dyson. As others have said, a real money saver!
Nice video but you missed the flap on the entrance to the dust collector.. I had taken my Dyson apart as per your video but it still pulsed ! Simply freeing the flap on the circular entrance tube fixed the pulsing .
I cover that in my other video whys my dyson pulsing.
ua-cam.com/video/HmLsjBdBXtE/v-deo.html
I was hoping that this included the larger found filter that I need to swap out .... purchased long one & moter filter....
that's the only 2 on this model.
I fixed mine stopping and starting by cleaning the cone filter there was a clump of hard dust at the bottom of it.
However the battery now cuts out after about 5 seconds after a full charge. Do I need a new battery?
It's odd that before I 'fixed' it, it would run for about 5-10 muinutes (until I hit the turbo button), so why the battery blinking like it's empty after a few seconds now?
this was halfway helpful my dyson is slightly different than your but i think my fan blade is not rotating and my electrical board is filthy. now i need to find a video on how to open up fan blade compartment to clean it out
Don't waste your time, junk it and buy a proper vacuum cleaner.
Thank you.
YES!!! There are a couple of filter companies on Amazon that sell those .
DO NOY BUT ANOTHER VAC! The filters are sold three in a pack even!
fish tank or pond filters foam is the same thing just needs cutting up in to a strip and works fine and cheap as.
Hi! My back filter was disintegrated and I can’t find a replacement any idea what foam I could get to make my own or can you recommend a place that will send to aust. Thanks for the vid
ua-cam.com/video/e3H6-RDHuIo/v-deo.htmlsi=5eWErHMMp-Jlr766
update it to the new style hepa filter links in the description. otherwise a washing up sponge will work just fine
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Finally! An easy to follow and helpful video! Thanks again!!
I cant get that top off on the long filter like you did with a flathead
just buy a replacement there so cheap on Ebay
Hi! Great vid! The filter on the back, the black donut. Mine came all apart so I need to replace it but I can’t find the replacement filter. Any leads on where I can buy one?

Thanks for this video as my dyson started to paulse but after doing what you showed on video all good now t.y
I should add we have a dog and the nay thing I’ve ever changed on my Dyson V6 has Animal has been the battery and the brush head roller bar! I got it from Dyson once in a Black Friday deal, it may be expensive but it has lasted this long.
