This video is a game changer for the performance and life of your vacuum. Thank you for making this informative and simple to follow video. I really appreciated the added insights on tips, tricks, and things you might run into and most importantly that you took the time to show the reassembly step by step -instead of saying something like “now put it back together in the reverse order you took it apart” which sounds fine at the time, but I have found *more than once unfortunately* it can be easier said than done. My vacuum is a few years old and runs like it’s brand new so thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks so much for this, you have saved a Dyson from going to landfill (neighbor was throwing it out) simple maintainence like this saves so much waste and protects the planet. Again, thank you
Absolutely, just saved a Dyson that a friend was getting rid of as they said it was knackered. Also replaced with a fresh battery and it's good as new!
if only corporations cared enough about the environment over money to provide these kinds of instructions so people don't have to reverse engineer everything. the internet could be so much more useful to the environment. so sad to see.
GREAT, GREAT EXPLANATION. That was so well done. It is rare for a device such as that to be broken down, cleaned and reassembled with clarity. The accent didn't hurt.
Lol, I've had mine the better part of a decade, and I'm only even watching this because someone decided to vacuum up flour. All I've ever had to do is clear the bin, and occasionally I clean the filter.
I’ll pile on here with the rest of the grateful viewers, and, like the previous commenter, really appreciated the reassembly instructions. You saved the day by enabling me to restore my vacuum. “‘‘Twas a brave man who disassembled the Dyson vacuum and then put it all back together. It won the war.” Author unknown
Mate you are a champion. I never knew how to pull the filter apart. You just saved me a trip to Dyson. 6 years of dust build up in the filter gone. 👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thank you! This was explained very well… my Dyson has been pulsing on and off for a couple of weeks.. I had no idea how to pull it apart.. it’s now cleaned and drying.. hoping that sorts it out. Great video. Thank you!!
THANK you very much Russell, I could not have done the thorough cleaning of the cyclone assembly without your detailed instructions. A TORX T9 dedicated (not multi-bits) screw driver 6" long from handle end to tip will make this work easy and well worth acquiring one before starting the work. My gratitude also extends to UA-cam for their publications.
Have this dyson and it wasn't working properly. Just before I put it in the bin I came across your video. Great job on the step by step instructions. Dyson working great now. Thank you.
THANKS !! Russell - thanks for the great demo video. My Dyson was getting a little slow - I'll bet this gets it all lined up after I get the security Torx drivers. Dyson should hire you to do these instructional videos - you are just the right guy for it.
A very comprehensive video. I have a later model that gums up frequently. Fortunately I have compressed air & I give it a good blow through with the air nozzle. It’s unbelievable how much dust is trapped inside the machine. I don’t know how anyone without a bit of mechanical knowledge could own these things 😬
Thank you I couldn’t figure out how to clean it for the life of me and no matter how much a tried I kept smelling so musty. Thanks for showing how to pry that filtery area off.
I wish you were my neighbor! Thanks for the tutorial, especially showing how to put it back together. I think my Dyson is clogged because it's acting up after I vacuumed up some drywall dust. Ironically, after I did that it expelled alot of the dust into the air, so I honestly don't think the filtration is great.
Excellent video for a tricky disassembly - the clear instructions made all the difference. I found that a no.8 Torx handled (75mm) driver did the trick on the deeply embedded fasteners. Nice one. Thank you Russell!
thanks I was about to throw this glorified broom away, but …you saved it from going to the tip. Never again one of these bagless messes, no matter which brand. You are showing the reality of bagless!
After stripping down and cleaning my v6 up to the cyclone assembly, I was not brave enough to tackle that without instructions. After watching your brilliant video, I'm now ready to dive in and strip it down to it's skeleton parts! Hopefully this will solve my problem, as after cleaning all the other parts, it still sucks up little more than the carpet fibres! I can't wait to come back and let you know just how well you solved it for me 🤞🤞🤞 (otherwise, it means taking out a mortgage for a new one!). I've had my v6 for at least 5 years, so if this is all it takes to renew it, then you deserve a gold medal, sir! 🥰 I'll be back...
Thank you so much. I never knew the top came off the filter I had been just rinsing it off. There was SO MUCH gunk inside and packed tight. I had to use a tool to get the stuff packed in a the bottom. Now it's like a new vacuum!
Dyeing recommendation to rinse it is very poor advice. Opening it up as in the video allows a much more thorough cleaning. I use a small flat blade screwdriver to press down on the raised tabs. It takes some effort but well worth doing.
THANK YOU sir!! Mine was pulsating but charging fine and Dyson wanted me to get a new battery. Going to take mine apart, since now I see a lot of dirt gets caught in parts we cannot generally access. You just saved me 80 Euros, plus helping with the maintenance of the other Dysons in the family!
Thank you for the help I could not have cleaned it so well. I could not get it apart until I saw this video about the white snap ring with the needle nose pliers.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Absolutely the best video for fixing and cleaning the Dyson! So easy to follow Russell, taking apart the Dyson, cleaning and putting it all back together again. Thank you Russell. Only by watching your video I have now been able to stop my Dyson from pulsating on and off. Not sure I would attempt the servicing myself though even though you made it look easy. 👍😀 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Thank you Russell!!! This was incredibly helpful and clearly explained! Your video was so easy and understandable and QUICK! Fixed my Dyson in just a few minutes - cheers!!!
Hi Russell. Thank you so much for showing and explaining “everything” at a steady and easy pace. This will help me immensely. Thanks Again. Your a star.
Brilliant, thank you. I’ve never stripped mine down beyond taking the purple mesh bit off. Once I get that far I then whack the the rest of the housing a good few times to get the dirt out. This normally fixes the pulse problem.
Thanks Russell; my Dyson was pulsing as well - turned out the battery was faulty so got a new one: but only worked that out by stripping it down and then trying to charge it with just the motor unit. When there's no cyclone attached, and you just have the motor body with battery, you know it's the battery that's at fault! Did the full deep clean and with the new battery it's working like new. Thanks again.
Thanks, have stripped vac down and cleaned as described. Hoping this will do the trick. If not have you created video on changing voltage trip? Thanks again for great video.
EXCELLENT video Russell! Had that problem, called Dyson and they walked me through steps to fix this. The Agent walked me through several trouble shooting steps and in the end she couldn't solve the problem. So asked her what next-she told me she couldn't help further. Called back months later to discuss again and the agent listened to the scenario of the first call. So I asked what next. She said I could call back later and she would go through the trouble shooting steps with me. Needless to say I haven't called back. I will try using your video to remedy this.
YOU ARE AMAZING THANK YOU!!! The cyclone thingy was so dirty and whenever we used it the thingy was smelled so bad!!! I thought it was the filter but that didn’t do anything to stop the smell when we cleaned it. Just cleaned the cyclone assembly and it’s already working so much better!!
A very good video! The disassembly and replace was very clearly done. We've had the V07 and I need to do this thorough cleaning! Best video I've watched on this Dyson machine
Can't thank you enough my vacuum has been doing this for long time. Looked up so many things on UA-cam and nothing worked till I found you and yesterday my husband took out the screen and it was unbelievably clogged and we cleaned the whole thing and it's working perfect, like new.
Thank you sir for this excellent instructional video. My unit is a V8 Absolute and is very similar. Those 5 screws are very difficult to reach and I used my micro screw driver (tightens my eye glasses hinges) and it worked fine. Also, removing the canister is kind of tricky but I pried on it like you said and used a lot of patience with these plastic parts. So, no damage! I soaked the parts in warm water with dish soap and they were all clean! Assembled everything back together and it runs like new. Thanks again.
I just bought a used one of these at Goodwill for 20 bucks and it was doing that pulsing on/off cleaned the purple filter and it's working fine, I am going to give mine a good clean like you are doing so I appreciate you posting this tutorial video.
@@RussellPlatten Yeah I cleaned it up last night and this morning tried it out, wow it picked up stuff my other vacuum wouldn't, I'm seriously impressed with this Dyson V6 motorhead has it on turbo and yeah cleaning.

Wonderful thorough video thanks again. 🙏 FYI…I also purchased a handy tool kit with the necessary tools made for Dyson devices.
I was almost going to buy a new vacuum cleaner! So much fine dust inside the top filter, cleaned it out and it’s back on full power and no more stuttering. I never knew you can access the inside of the filter, thanks so much!
Great instruction video. However it just demonstrate what a lousy design this product is. You need 2 university degrees to maintain it. I've given up using it.
I haven’t got two University degrees and I found it easy to fix and maintain haha! I agree it’s crap though as Makita and Karcher offer far better alternatives! 🙂
The one I am having trouble with ( V8)is only 1 1/2,years old, and I have never had one last longer than three years. They work great when they work but you are not going to have this for a long time unless you have the time (and the equipment) to do this whole mess fairly often.
Maybe its just me but this didn't look like a particularly difficult process to do every 6 month to a couple of years. I've done similar things to my dc25 mains powered one before. Compared with almost every other brand of bagless vacuum cleaner I find Dysons to be much easier to live with. Most seem to get their filters clogged so quickly and be a horrible process to clean. At least a deep clean like this is infrequent.
At first I was thinking "I was able to figure that out myself" and then he did what I was scared I would break it doing, simply pried it open with a knife! Pretty shocking how complex this cyclone is after that! Great no nonsense video. Sure appreciate!
Thanks for this gem of a video Russell. I will attempt this soon as I get through the others chores always awaiting attention. This was truly a great example of cause and effect. Remedied by a radical clean.
It certainly worked for me Luke. I missed a filter though, there is another one under the cover where the MAX button is. It was not causing a problem with mine. :-)
Thanks Russell sorted out a 5yo Vacuum which has just been used to clean a dusty house post decorating (plastering) and I mullered it completely. Thanks to your great video it's happily cleaning away again. Cheers Dan
Wow, thank you so much. We have always checked the pipe, heads and main unit and we were having problems. I complained that popcorn kernels were too strong to be vacuumed up. Then I saw your video, wow. It was completely the filter. I cleaned it and almost could t move the vacuum over the carpet afterwards. Thank you so much - this was a game changer!
Superb video. Have followed it tonight with both my handhelds. Just the last step I couldn’t do as my screwdriver thing wasn’t long enough. You explain & demonstrate so well. Thank you so much 😊
Thank you so much! I was about to through out my dyson. They are so overpriced and it was barely sucking up dust bunnies are hardwood. I have washed my filter so the outside looked okay but the inside was packed full of dust and hair. Thank you sooooo much!!! It’s like brand new again and my battery lasts longer.
Just found a non-working V7 stick unit at a thrift store: LED just flashes once when pulling the trigger. I disassembled it alongside my brother’s non-stick V8 that I had already installed a DeWALT battery adapter into… meaning I also get to use his charger for mine now that I fixed it (spoilers?). ;) They are almost identical except the V8 has a post filter. The battery had already been replaced with an aftermarket. Turns out the motor was seized even though that part looked like it had never been used without even a spec of dust internally. Once I had it out I could force it to turn by hand and the crusty resistance just gradually went away as I turned it. Didn’t even have to lube it though I went back and put a dab of sewing machine oil on the hole in the center of the blade (no telling if it will make its way in deeper). Haven’t seen anyone mention this fault/fix yet, so I hope it helps someone.
Good video! In addition, clean the gasket of the little flapper door in the tube where the dirt enters the basket so it can open & close freely during use. Wow! It's back to super suction!
Well it worked first time for me. I need that 8-size star driver, my smallest was a 10. I did find a twisted plastic coated wire with soft bristles got a ton of stuff out of the vortex channels, and when I tweaked the plastic back in place and replaced the dust container, all worked fabulously. This is TERRFIC stuff Russell - Thank you. I'll apply similar principals to my old Dyson 1 suction section now. Although nearly all user parts are now third party as Dyson discontinued theirs, it still works pretty well, so long as I keep everything clean. Kind of makes you wonder why one has to use another vacuum cleaner to get all the gunk out of this one!!
Dude, you're a wizard!!it worked! 😮I've Googled countless times and the fixes never did. If you lived in Nevada, I'd find you to give the biggest hug ever! Now, to find a video for "new" one I bought!
Thanks for the video. You definitely made the process easier. @ 12:07 you start to connect the motor assembly with part of the cyclone. After I'd cleaned and dried everything, I completely assembled all of the cyclone parts together. Then I connected the motor assembly to the cyclone. It seemed to be a little easier because I didn't have to hold the motor and the battery as I was assembling the last of the cyclone. Thanks again.
This was awesome , after i cleaned the filter and took the cloth part off the plastic cleaned it, it was full of hair, worked like it was new, thankyou,
Thank you for this part 6:40 right here. Someone used my v15 with drywall dust and sawdust while I was gone even though a ShopVac was readily available. They didn't tell me that they used my Dyson and I got a nasty surprise when I got back home. It was brand new too. It's day 3 of cleaning everything and I was looking for a guide to put it all back together.
I did everything you suggested piece by piece, clean the wrap exactly as you did it put it all together and I still cannot get it to work few seconds and it stops but thanks for the advice. At least I learned something is how to clean something that he doesn’t work, thank you
There is another filter that I missed in the video. It is behind the max button on top of the motor. That could be the issue. There are other videos on here showing this filter: ua-cam.com/video/hfrPBeckjtw/v-deo.html :-)
Thank you so much for this great video. My V6 Animal is now like it is brand new. I'm going to give the same treatment to my Absolute. You have saved me hundres of pounds on new ones. You are a star. There can't be anyone out there who doesn't try this before rushing to buy a new one. Many thanks
Thank you so much for making this video. Behind the purple filter was just crammed with dust, which didn't seen right at all that it couldn't be cleaned out it's been driving me mad how to get in there. All sorted & drying now 👍 x
Ive been using compressed air on my V7 after dirtier jobs as preventative maintenance. It’s incredible how much dust gets blown out after a little use, I hope that doesn’t do more harm than good.
The only issue I can see is blowing dust into the motor. I think that if you are not prepared to strip it down, blowing it out with compressed air when it loses performance is better than nothing and should improve things. I would try not to do this too often though. Mind you, I am no expert so I may be talking a load of rubbish! :-)
Couldn’t get my d7 apart. It was causing damage to the plastic. I was afraid it would affect suction. Also needed to push tabs in on the filter to remove top. Thank you for the post! Blessings!
Thank you so much, Russell, my husband and I really enjoyed watching this video and look forward to exploring our Dyson. It looks brand new, we have subscribed to see what other gems of knowledge you have shared Chel and Jeff
Great video showing people how to do it! Ive retired my V6 Total clean for a Henry Quick. All the Dyson cordless hoovers are all the same. They all suffer from dust getting clogged inside the machine, poor design in my opinion. The Henry Quick is far better than the Dyson cordless stick vacs. No messing about having to take apart the whole machine just to clean it.
AS said by many others-well done video. not overly long or repetitive which is quite a nice change on UA-cam. Might add that marking holes for hard to see spots with a gold or silver Sharpie marker helps. Thanks for helping figure out the unknown of cleaning machine.
That is a great instruction video. No music,no BS, straight to the point. Thank you

@@RussellPlatten what vacuum do you have now
First rate .... presentation was logical, brillantly sequential, and no nonsense .... Thank you for your time and insights ....
Glad I could help! :-)
Thanks.... great video. Love your SLIM handy battery operated SCREWDRIVER 👍
Cheers Dan
Glad I could help Dan! :-)
Exactly what i needed. My Dyson was pulsing like crazy. This fixed it all, like new. Thank you.
Glad I could help Brian! :-)
Thank you Russell!! You saved two sisters without a lot of experience fixing things from buying a new vacuum!
Glad I could help Kaitlyn! :-)
I nearly bought a new one today. But just did half these tips and it works. Thank you so much. LEGEND 🎉
Glad I could help! :-)
Thanks for a few pointers, I’m fairly competent at this, wasn’t hard, but this video gave me a few little pointers of which I’m grateful for thanks 👍🏼
Thank you so much i have had my Dyson for almost 4 years. This video you created helped me clean it out thoroughly. Well done from NZ
Glad it helped Joy! Loved NZ when I was over there in the early 80's. :-)
Glad I could help Rachelle! :-)
Thanks for taking the time - the first thorough and complete maintenance video after looking A LOT! Brilliant.
Glad I could help! :-)
Just found your video, wish I’d found it 3 years ago, great concise video thank you
Thanks a lot Russel ! You make my day !!! I was not able to put together the cyclone . Now, I have a brand new DYSON 6. Very clear !!!!
Glad I could help! :-)
Superb video. Have followed it tonight with both my handhelds.
Just the last step I couldn’t do as my screwdriver thing wasn’t long enough.
You explain & demonstrate so well.
Thank you so much 😊
Glad it helped Gill! :-)
Russell, thank you so much for taking the time to make and upload this video. It is so clear and precise.
Glad it was helpful! :-)
Glad I could help Lesley! :-)
Your a legend...
Decent video 👍
No rabbit like a lot of American tutorials.
Straight to the point and nice and clear and easy to understand...champion
Glad it helped Glenn! :-)
Good video! In addition, clean the gasket of the little flapper door in the tube where the dirt enters the basket so it can open & close freely during use. Wow! It's back to super suction!
:-)
Glad I could help John! :-)
Dude, you're a wizard!!it worked!
😮I've Googled countless times and the fixes never did.
If you lived in Nevada, I'd find you to give the biggest hug ever!
Now, to find a video for "new" one I bought!
Glad I could help Cheryl! :-)
Sounds like a good tip! :-)
Thank you so much for this video. Has truly brought my Dyson back to its former glory! Feels great knowing I’ve got a spanking clean vacuum.
Glad I could help Keith! :-)
Superb instructions and easy to follow video..... and if you fast forward to the end..... The Dyson looks Brand NEW!!!!
Cheers Stephen! :-)
Awesome full demo of a DC59 teardown and reassembly Russell. I highly recommend this video!
Glad I could help Paul! :-)
This was awesome , after i cleaned the filter and took the cloth part off the plastic cleaned it, it was full of hair, worked like it was new, thankyou,
Glad I could help Jill! :-)
I have a different model but these steps were almost word for word what I did. Great job, thank you!
Glad it helped Tony! :-)
WOW! This is a great guide to converting your old Dyson, to practically new! Tear down and re-assembly was helpful. Cheers!
Glad it helped Jim! :-)
Thank you so much Russell for helping me clean my dyson V6.suburb instructions.
Thank you for a fantastic video. I have just completed a full clean of our Dyson and it's never worked better.
Glad it helped Russell! :-)
You just saved my v6! Didn't know the filter opens up, couldn't believe the amount of gunk in there. Thanks a lot!!
Glad I could help! :-)
Super video, this literally avoided me having to buy a new Dyson and get my old one fixed, massive thanks !
Glad I could help Stef! :-)
Wouah!! The perfect and unmatched video about cleaning a Dyson ! Thank you 🙏🏼
Glad it was helpful! :-)
Thanks , professionally explained, recommend others to watch if they have an issue with their Dyson cleaner
Glad I could help! :-)
Thank you so much for this great video. My V6 Animal is now like it is brand new. I'm going to give the same treatment to my Absolute. You have saved me hundres of pounds on new ones. You are a star. There can't be anyone out there who doesn't try this before rushing to buy a new one. Many thanks
Glad I could help Robert! :-)
Thank you so much for making this video. Behind the purple filter was just crammed with dust, which didn't seen right at all that it couldn't be cleaned out it's been driving me mad how to get in there. All sorted & drying now 👍 x
Glad I could help! :-)
Blessings!
Hopefully it is all sorted out! :-)
Thank you so much, Russell, my husband and I really enjoyed watching this video and look forward to exploring our Dyson. It looks brand new, we have subscribed to see what other gems of knowledge you have shared Chel and Jeff
Thank you Chel, I hope you find something else of interest to watch! :-)
Glad it was helpful Mark! Good tip. :-)
Extremely through. I have a 5 year d6 and after watching this amount of work I'm telling my GF to get us a new one. :)
LOL!
