When "BANDS" had talent. Today there is no such thing as a Band. Bands have instruments and associated people IN said band, who know how to play those intruments. Concerts are a live performance of a Band or Bands. Music today is basically non-existent. And "Musical" Talent is TOTALLY non-existent
You know, the bass player is not the showman in the band, but no doubt he did his job excellently, his bass playing has been impeccable thru the ages and I'd say he has a lot to do with the success of the band as a whole, and I guess the only one that isn't gesturing and jumping around. Roger, well, imagine Queen without Freddy, that's what Roger is to the band. Pete, the songwriter and along with Keith the eyecatchers of the group, no doubt. I admit, I have rediscovered the band, didn't know much about it until "Who Are You" back in the middle seventies, but watching their videos I recognized the sound at the beginning and since it has stuck to my mind. Keith Moon, well, Keith is a big powerhouse in the band, I have always liked his style of drumming, which reminded me of a video I was watching of Rush, "Tom Sawyer" and in one of the sudden glances at the band drummer I saw this guy that very much looked like Keith and asked myself if it was possible that Rush's recording was before Moon's passing because this guy played, drummed very similar to Moon, and of course Googled it. Come the discussion about the proverbial egg or chicken first appearance, since these two musicians play, to my understanding, very much alike. Who found who? Who cares, what I care is the both, Neil Peart and Keith Moon have easily been a big part of the band successes. It is a shame they both passed away. I can't imagine any of the bands without them, although both drummers were of course replaced. Baba O'Riley is one of them anthems for The Who, a band that was discovered by the 90's generation by the CSI Miami theme song, whoever made that choice of using The Who song made a great choice, the people from that decade who grew up watching Caruso and the show now know The Who has been making great music since the early 70's. The Who is a great band, even without Moon. Now I rest my case.
@@davidacevedo8620 Peart and Who, easily in the top three of rock drummers. Geddy Lee and Entwistle easily in the top three bassist. Alex and Towshend are two overlooked guitarist. When I compare Peart and Moon, I see vast differences. Moon seems powerful and fast, he has some epic fills. Peart is a technician. Disclaimer, I'm no musician, just a fan of both bands.
My God but the British invasion was fabulous. Nothing matched their talent. Led Zep, The Who, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Queen, I can go on and on. ❤
I was never a huge fan of The Who but last summer as I sold my house and was moving out, I found hundreds of vinyl albums that had apparently been left behind by renters over the years up in the attic. The Who must've been their favorite band. I took all those albums to my new place and bought a record player. Here I am exploring them on UA-cam and realizing just what a great live band they were. This song is breathtaking.
Between John and his thunder fingers and Keith being all over the place actually it was Pete and his prefect timing that kept the band in time. Maybe not on this song per say but normally it was just that way.
This is unique for its time because the synth loop doesn't allow for any tempo fluctuation which is why Keith is wearing headphones here. Nowadays most big acts have all members wearing in ear monitors and are playing to backing tracks with a click. This particular song is sort of an early precursor to that method. The Wall live performances by Pink Floyd are an even better example because everything had to sync up with the on screen projections and continuity between songs.
Is that right - is that the role of the bassist? (fascinating to me because I have studied on a tiny bit of music comprising of only level 1 theory), but have no idea about practical stuff like that, it's really interesting!
No synchronized dancers. No laser light show. No auto tune. No half naked women. No designer clothing. Nothing but real people with real talent having a really good time and sharing with all of us. RIP Keith.
But they've used backing tracks live. Ever wondered, why Keith Moon is wearing headphones taped around his head live? The keyborads are backing tracks. Just sayin'.

I am convinced of 4 things. First, and most important, this is definitely one of my favorite videos, favorite bands, favorite audios. YEOW! Second, that is Keith Moon on drums! Third, Keith Moon died in 1978. Fourth, the date of 1979 on this video must be in error. And of course the answer is ... "the magic of video", the movie "The Kids Are All Right". THANKS Roger, Pete, Keith, and John, and the others who came later to keep the music alive in "live music"!
In the era of the late '60s and early '70s, pretty damn good. The late 60s was a veritable Big Bang of musical Talent featuring some of the finest singer-songwriters and instrumentalists ever to walk on this planet. We just took it for granted and thought that music would always be like that. Boy were we wrong about that. We slipped from this kind of stuff into fucking Disco, of all things. Now I might like three or four disco songs but considering how many were written and got monster air time that's not a very good ratio of like to dislike. One that Springs to mind is That's the Way by KC and the Sunshine Band.
I saw the Who on Sunday July 20th, 1980 at Exposition stadium in Toronto. Kenneth Jones replaced the died Keith Moon on the tour. I drove home three hours away to start my new job in the Sarnia Chemical Valley. Didn’t sleep at all that night and went into work. I bought a t-shirt at the concert and wore it to work on my first day with the date on it. I retired in 2021. On my last day, I dug up the old shirt I saved and wore it to work on my last day. Everyone at work had a good laughed. Oddly enough the shirt still fit.
I was 12 or 13 in the mid 80s and my dad made me paint the whole basement where there was a partially finished TV room. So I rented The Kids Are Alright on VHS, put it in the VCR, blasted the mono TV and got to work. I would stop and rewind this part so many times because it was my favorite song by The Who, that hearing this version in particular will always remind me of that day as a kid, spent painting in the basement, listening to The Who, when rock n roll meant the world.
When they played this at the old Spectrum in Philly/1980 it was so loud. The whole building shook. When they sang , "they're all wasted!" the place went nuts. Girls taking their tops off. I remember it like it was yesterday. Zghod I love rock n roll.
The Ox and Roger Glover in my personal opinion are two cool cats! Lol. I would have loved those two on stage together! How iconic would that have been? Just like Keith Emerson and Jon Lord if it would have ever happened.
I've always and will be totally and UTTERLY, completely and helplessly in AWE and infatuated with PETE. I love his passion and just lets his body and mind do what it wishes in the moment :) That talent and perfection is amazing.
@@kenhoward3512 Always been my favourite album as well. Other Who albums had great music as well, but this one, every song on it was fantastic. That monolith is a concrete foundation for a mill, or mine workings notice it's on a huge rubble heap.
Thundering drums and bass, windmill guitar and screaming vocals..BRILLIANT! it’s what rock and roll is all about. Thank you gents, thank you for being “who” you are!
I saw them just after Who's next was released, sat/stood in front of the band and was deaf for nearly 3 days afterwards...my buddy caught Daultrys's broken tamborine he threw into the crowd! Memorable.
Sad to say but the Golden Age of rock and roll is long gone and bands like this, Led Zeppelin and all of those other fantastic artists of the 70s will never be seen again. All these guys were Rock royalty !!
I dunno. I was there...but damn, young people are coming along all the time and someday, I believe, they will grab the torch and take it further down the path...it's just a matter of time :)
This (this performance in particular) is THE best version of Baba O' Reily they ever recorded--it equals if not tops the studio version. This is from the Kilburn 1978 performance--one of Moon's last. they did two shows that day, with nearly identicle set lists. this particular one from the kids are allright differs from the DVD release, but it is very similar--but its better, that's my point
Is it live or did they overdub it a little? I do agree, it's my favorite version, even better then "Who's Next". However "Won't Get Fooled Again" is better on "Who's Next" compared to the Shepperton versions....
Clearly this is not from Kilburn which was filmed in 1977 and Keith Moon wore a purple sparkle stage outfit. This is from 1978 at Sheperton Studio, and if you notice every member of the group is wearing the same outfit as Kilburn other than Keith Moon, who could no longer fit into that outfit cause he'd gained too much weight.
The greatest band ever to walk the planet. Live at Leeds - best live rock album ever recorded. Saw the original four play three times in the 70s, never to be forgotten.
This song is special to me because it played on the radio when I was driving a high school drop out to see my CO to get her waivers for a pot possession conviction, DUI, and only having a GED. When it came on, she said it was her life story, and turned the volume up. She had been raped by her step father. I got her an interview with my CO because, for some reason, I believed in her. He gave her the waiver. Years later, she walked into my office, saluted me, and with tears running her cheeks, thanked me. Her CO sent her to the Naval Academy. She was a newly commissioned officer. She saluted me, hugged me, and thanked me for believing in her.
This was filmed at Shepperton Studios (1978?)I lived close by. My girlfriend and I popped into The Anchor Hotel (pub) in Shepperton Square for a drink around 6 pm one night during this era. The bar was empty except for the Who who were all in front of us leaning on the bar. They all turned around as the door slammed as we walked in. The Who had bought Shepperton Studios around that time. About a year later I was in the bar with some "2nd division roady" friends at the Warren Lodge one night (a very small hotel opposite The Anchor owned by the same guy) in walks Roger Daltrey who had had his head shaved for the part in the movie McVicar they had been filming at Pinewood (I think). Anyway it was a small bar and he was on his own and seeing the guys I was with asked if he could join us at our table. Its funny we didn't ever talk about the Who. Top man!
I’ve been playing bass for 30 something years and he always impresses me. One of the best ever! All together the greatest band of all time in my opinion.
One of the greatest performance by a rock band period. Pure emotion, no fake ass posing, lip syncing or dancers here. Real genuine talented artists playing their own instruments. This my friends is pure and easy !
No fake ass posing?? The Who thrived on posing! Mike Watt's shorthand for singers doing thier strut was "Daltry-ing". Pete's windmill strum? And yet we all agree it rules.
I waited in line to get a wristband and scored tickets to see the Who at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands back in '89 and it was a life changing experience. People camped out and partied for 3 days in the parking lot!
1975 in Philly at the Spectrum ( couldn't get tickets to the '73 concert), I was there and it was epic. Forever a Who fan. I am happy to be in good company with you all. Long Live Rock!
I remember once driving and this song came on the radio. I was jamming away in my car and a friend, she was driving opposite direction, doing the exact same thing. Next time I saw her she said “I caught you.” Lol good memories
Epic intro.... The bass line and the vocals are AMAZING. Townsend is playing tambourine haven't I even seen him touch his guitar so far (1:45 mark). Keith Moon on the drums. This song resonates throughout the ages and always will.
1979! I was a senior in high school. This was our music, back in the days you would roll your window down to talk to a friend and they were listening to the same radio station. The best times.
42 years later and this STILL gives me goosebumps. And I had a chance to see them in 1971 at Mississippi River Festival. Couldn't get off work. Turns out over 35-40,000 people were there. And I still regret not being able to go
Only John Entwistle can take a 3 chord song and make it difficult to play on bass. He's literally using 4 fingers on his right hand and playing like 128th notes. He was the God of the instrument.
He was the one talented musician in the band. Townsend made himself famous with windmilling, jumping around and over-acting while playing the most basic chords. Keith Moon had NO technique at all. Just thrash around like the Muppets drummer. Daltry spinning his mic (whats up with that?). Meanwhile Entwistle stood calmly and quietly, playing impossibly fast, intricate bass lines. True genious
Saw The Who live in Cornwall in 2023 still amazing, Roger Daltrey sounded as good as the original record. Incredible band. Just a shame Moon and Entwistle were'nt there with them.
Saw them in my school hall 1965 , can't explain had just been released , our youth club must've booked them before the record was in the charts , i was at the very front , pete did whack his guitar into a dummy speaker cab and waved his arm about like a loony , fantastic, I'll never forget that night .
I thank God for music, for without it's magic I would a be perfect example of failed humanity. This band and this song have been my soulmates for decades now, perhaps one of the reasons I am still respirating. I am saddened by the impossibility of attending all the performances of bands that I grew up with, even more so in finding out they are not immortal and neither are their fans. I know life is much more than Rock music, yet humanity would be an alien reality (to me) without it. These performers, by virtue of their gifts and their passion, have ever filled my heart with good thoughts and feelings. I am grateful to the uploader and UA-cam for this beautiful rendition of Baba O'Reily.
Pete's infatuation with the tambourine reminds me of "more cowbell" sketch
It’s a quality tambourine, cos try as he might he can’t put his fist through it. 😆

When they played this at the old Spectrum in Philly/1980 it was so loud. The whole building shook. When they sang , "they're all wasted!" the place went nuts. Girls taking their tops off. I remember it like it was yesterday. Zghod I love rock n roll.
After many decades it’s too easy to forget how magnificent the songs and bands of that era really were.
My fingers are cramping just watching Entwistle. Those were the days...
The Ox and Roger Glover in my personal opinion are two cool cats! Lol. I would have loved those two on stage together! How iconic would that have been? Just like Keith Emerson and Jon Lord if it would have ever happened.
the bassist rip, for Uriah Heep also. The days of the great bassists, Bain, Zepplin's, Queen, as well, they are gone and we will be gone too, soon.
I've always and will be totally and UTTERLY, completely and helplessly in AWE and infatuated with PETE. I love his passion and just lets his body and mind do what it wishes in the moment :) That talent and perfection is amazing.
Listen to his Empty Glass album.
Not the nicest of human beings though, guess you can get away with it playing like that (but also his problem.)
So privileged to have been around for 70's rock...what an era❤
Two things here.... John Entwhistle is a legend. I love how fat his tone is. And Pete Townsend is one weird cat.
I absolutely adore Pete’s stage presence
Same 😎🤘🏾@@alexmurphy5289
This album, and song was released 53 years ago today!! Long live rock!!!
The famous album cover of The Who having peed on a Stonehenge-like monolith. I spent a lot of hours cruising with "Who's Next" in the cassette player.
@@kenhoward3512 Always been my favourite album as well. Other Who albums had great music as well, but this one, every song on it was fantastic. That monolith is a concrete foundation for a mill, or mine workings notice it's on a huge rubble heap.
I need it every day . . .
The definitive version of this song. Pete's guitar sounds incredible.
You can actually hear john in this one!
this is true rock
Yep. They all sound incredible. All 4 of them were almost equally excellent in a way you rarely see from a band.
"Live" is always a version. Unless your syncing.
Kevin, sweet profile picture! The Taurus 1 is an unrivaled bass synth.
Thundering drums and bass, windmill guitar and screaming vocals..BRILLIANT! it’s what rock and roll is all about. Thank you gents, thank you for being “who” you are!
The kind of rock and roll that can peel paint off your walls.
I saw them just after Who's next was released, sat/stood in front of the band and was deaf for nearly 3 days afterwards...my buddy caught Daultrys's broken tamborine he threw into the crowd! Memorable.
Brilliant definition.absolutly genius
Still sounds sooo good in 2024 ❤❤❤ The Who at the top of their game. What a performance!!!
Sad to say but the Golden Age of rock and roll is long gone and bands like this, Led Zeppelin and all of those other fantastic artists of the 70s will never be seen again. All these guys were Rock royalty !!
Can't disagree with that, am so glad I lived in this great time of rock, 70's was a fine time to be alive.
I dunno. I was there...but damn, young people are coming along all the time and someday, I believe, they will grab the torch and take it further down the path...it's just a matter of time :)
@@cleawox You think so, they seem to be hooked on this shit they call music, all auto-tuned, lets just hope your right.
@@bluesman0903 they all hooked on BTS
I saw The Who when I was 16 yrs old & I can remember this song. I am 63 now & I still have the ticket stub.
This (this performance in particular) is THE best version of Baba O' Reily they ever recorded--it equals if not tops the studio version. This is from the Kilburn 1978 performance--one of Moon's last. they did two shows that day, with nearly identicle set lists. this particular one from the kids are allright differs from the DVD release, but it is very similar--but its better, that's my point
yeah mate!, sounds very good this version!!!
Shepperton Studios Filming for there Movie
Is it live or did they overdub it a little? I do agree, it's my favorite version, even better then "Who's Next". However "Won't Get Fooled Again" is better on "Who's Next" compared to the Shepperton versions....
Pulsar Lights 100% overdub
Clearly this is not from Kilburn which was filmed in 1977 and Keith Moon wore a purple sparkle stage outfit. This is from 1978 at Sheperton Studio, and if you notice every member of the group is wearing the same outfit as Kilburn other than Keith Moon, who could no longer fit into that outfit cause he'd gained too much weight.
And THIS is how it needs to be done live! Fantastic!
The greatest band ever to walk the planet. Live at Leeds - best live rock album ever recorded. Saw the original four play three times in the 70s, never to be forgotten.
72 yrs old and still listening to one of the best songs ever !!!! cant get enough !!!
The greatest bassist that ever walked this earth
John E. led the way in showing what CAN be done and what SHOULD be done!
One of the greatest rock bands ever.
one of?
A timeless track for the ages that will ring forever more
This song is special to me because it played on the radio when I was driving a high school drop out to see my CO to get her waivers for a pot possession conviction, DUI, and only having a GED.
My girlfriend and I popped into The Anchor Hotel (pub)
in Shepperton Square for a drink around 6 pm one night during this era. The bar was
empty except for the Who who were all in front of us leaning on the bar.
They all turned around as the door slammed as we walked in. The Who had
bought Shepperton Studios around that time. About a year later I was in the
bar with some "2nd division roady" friends at the Warren Lodge one night (a very
small hotel opposite The Anchor owned by the same guy) in walks Roger
Daltrey who had had his head shaved for the part in the movie McVicar
they had been filming at Pinewood (I think). Anyway it was a small bar
and he was on his own and seeing the guys I was with asked if he could join us at our table. Its
funny we didn't ever talk about the Who. Top man!
Used to work at Shepperton studios in 88-89. From west drayton. The who used to own Shepperton
That was amazing !!! I would liked to have seen more of John Entwhistle, that bass line holds the whole song together
The bass sound on this performance explains the "thunderfingers" nickname for sure.
I’ve been playing bass for 30 something years and he always impresses me. One of the best ever! All together the greatest band of all time in my opinion.
I noticed that too.....
I was going to make this same comment!
I saw the Who at the Edwardsville Illinois summer line up. I had dropped some windowpane. Incredible!!! I was never the same afterwards,
Man ... John was the best bassist in pop music 🤩😍❤ RIP "the Ox" and Keith😭
One of the greatest bands ever ! 😊😊😊
Can never get over how much Entwistle during this era legit looks like Ringo.
Or Derek Smalls
no shit eh? I was thinking "when did Ringo join The Who"???? I was about to google it lol.....They could be brothers.....
England is an island...😁
I'm not sure it gets any better than this. Keith and John we miss you.
Brought a tear to my eye, seeing them all alive and rockin.
Same here, literally moved me to tears.
This song makes me feel alive even in the dark times
One of the greatest performance by a rock band period. Pure emotion, no fake ass posing, lip syncing or dancers here. Real genuine talented artists playing their own instruments. This my friends is pure and easy !
No fake ass posing?? The Who thrived on posing! Mike Watt's shorthand for singers doing thier strut was "Daltry-ing". Pete's windmill strum? And yet we all agree it rules.
The key word my friend is “fake “
The air cut is a real posing stuff
This is one of the best live performances of any song by any band ever, period
THe Who Brilliant but must never got see Thin Lizzy, the very best rocking band of all time
@@jamesbradshaw3389 Fucking YES. I've no idea why but Lizzy are often overlooked.
I will see your The Who and raise you a Pink Floyd Pulse
what about the drum timing being so sluggish and the mistakes he is making? Best? Really? wow...
@@morbidmanmusicand the fills at the start? Wtf Keith must have been on one
I waited in line to get a wristband and scored tickets to see the Who at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands back in '89 and it was a life changing experience. People camped out and partied for 3 days in the parking lot!
What energy and power. I can feel my youth in this music. We were young, we were winning, we had momentum!
I'm 40 and I'm teenage wasteland... this song is great, great, great! Thanks for this video!
1975 in Philly at the Spectrum ( couldn't get tickets to the '73 concert), I was there and it was epic.
Forever a Who fan. I am happy to be in good company with you all.
Long Live Rock!
This sounds amazing. Love the bass! Moon died in 1978, so this is a 1978 presentation.
Yep
From the movie premiaired 1979.
I saw them live when this Album came out and my Ears rang for two Days, Killer Show!
I remember once driving and this song came on the radio. I was jamming away in my car and a friend, she was driving opposite direction, doing the exact same thing. Next time I saw her she said “I caught you.” Lol good memories
Highschool in the 70's this was my favorite band, buy Zep, Floyd, stones, so many great bands back 60's,70's.
The Who, my favorite band!
And I still regret not being able to go
That bass sounds so awesome!!
Gold.
Pete Townhend's showmanship in this song is incredible and legendary.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
Incredibly overrated….
This song has always been my all time favorite Who song since it came out on the radio.
Only John Entwistle can take a 3 chord song and make it difficult to play on bass. He's literally using 4 fingers on his right hand and playing like 128th notes. He was the God of the instrument.
good ol Thunder fingers
Playing a Bass like a lead guitar
what a cool comment friend
His wife was particularly fond of that technique
He was the one talented musician in the band. Townsend made himself famous with windmilling, jumping around and over-acting while playing the most basic chords. Keith Moon had NO technique at all. Just thrash around like the Muppets drummer. Daltry spinning his mic (whats up with that?). Meanwhile Entwistle stood calmly and quietly, playing impossibly fast, intricate bass lines. True genious
These guys knew they were way more than just musicians. The production value is off the charts. So glad this was made on film.
I saw this in 79 at the Charles in Boston.
The first 3 notes Entwistle played on that Alembic Bass changed my life...
Oh God, those were the days! I have so many memories associated with this song, this album! 🥹
God i miss great music like this.
The most awesome song from the greatest rock band ever. And yea, I'd step on you to see THE WHO !!
They brought this back, this is without a doubt the best rawk vid on YT..
Nobody plays like this anymore. Damn. Glad i got to some of the best.
Saw The Who in concert. They never stopped during the entire show. When it was over they had left it all on the stage.
Greatest rock and roll band EVER. Period
Just a opinion. Period.
@naornemmen FACT
There are better bands. FFS
Who plays the intro?
Also, tape around the head?
@@EpistemicResponsibility4Allwrong again
Do you look to the God who created music? Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
