Ann Wilson revealed in interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards Mushroom Records, who as a publicity stunt released a made-up story of an incestuous affair involving Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson. The song particularly focuses on Ann's rage towards a male radio promoter who came up to her after a concert asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher. After he revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy, Ann became outraged, went back to her hotel room, and wrote the original lyrics of the song.
This is crazy, and true! She also said the name, Barracuda, came to mind first. As its a slippery, almost snake like, dangerous thing. She went straight back to the hotel, and penned the lyrics to, arguably, their most popular, recognizable song. Isn't that just amazing? People, and Heart in particular, are amazing.
There are "rock singers" ... and "the ones that are IMMEDIATELY recognisable". She belongs in that category just like Tarja Turunen did for Nightwish (and they replaced her with other singers who simply dong immediately sound different).
I can see me doing that!!! Your post is hilarious. I can my self driving down the road with my windows open belting out "BARRACUDA" The faster the song,; the faster I would put the pedal to the medal.
I was 9 years old in 1977 when my mom brought home the album and blasted it from my old turntable for the first time. I'd never heard anything like Ann's voice, the guitar...it was the beginning of a love affair with their music that is still going strong all these many years later. My mom is gone now, but every time I play this song in particular I am reminded of her and the smile on her face as she loved Heart equally. Now I share the love of this group with my teen daughter and can't help but think that someday when I am gone, she'll blast this and be reminded of me and our awesome memories with Heart in the background, still rocking!
That's an awesome memory, Wanda. When my brother was in Junior High, Heart played in his school gym. I was still in sixth grade, so I missed out on that epic occasion. That was back in 1982. Good times! 😎
That's one thing about music. There are those groups/songs that people introduce you to that you end up loving. That person's memory is often indelibly grafted onto that song. So, when you hear them, you think of that person. Want someone to remember you.......introduce them to some incredible music. ;-)
I’m not into heavy rock at all but just heard this on 5Live Huey show and it made me stop in my tracks. The bass line pulls you in but then her voice kicks in!! Wow. Going on my list of fave songs right now. 😀
Indeed! This was the era of frontmen like Freddie Mercury, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, among other top-notch lead singers-- and Anne certainly held her own!
'Barracuda' is a timeless rock anthem! Ann and Nancy Wilson’s powerhouse vocals and that unforgettable guitar riff make this track hit just as hard today as it did in 1977. 🔥🎸 Heart defined an era and continues to inspire generations of musicians. Still can’t get enough of this classic! #Heart #Barracuda #ClassicRock
These girls showed they have their own spot in music history with Ann's piercing vocals and Nancy's guitar riffs they held their own in male rock arena💜💯
This is some amazing music, no bones about it. Ann has a voice that I still don't find an equal to. She is literally my favorite vocalist, male or female, ever (Bruce Dickinson is my very close second-in his hayday).

@@raynjpg I cannot disagree on that - but still just not like Barracuda's simple but hard-drivin', out-of-the-blocks intro and its strong, decisive, full-stop outro.
Me and my girlfriends went to see Heart in concert when we were pre-teens and we were glad our parents said yes, we could go, and we all were so excited, they were my favorite female rock band in the hard rock type of fame, although I loved the guitar playing and lyrics and the vocals it was just awesome as we expected!! This is one of THE best rock songs of alllllll time. I was a mid-teen when it came out and now in my 60's it still a rock masterpiece! Thank you Heart.
Time is so strange, I was about 6-8 when I first heard this song on guitar hero 3. Idk it’s just crazy to me how I’m 22 now and now and even as a kid I found this song to be soooo good. Like aggressive but super catchy. Not like I see older people as aliens, but like I just kinda always thought like they just think and act different cuz they’re older and went thru different things than I did, but I find it so cool that you grew up listening to this in a very similar way I did but about 40 years apart! It makes me wonder if kids in 200 years will ever like hear this song or another and have the same reactions and what it must be like for them. Idk like you are about 40 years older than me but that’s all that pretty much separates us even though 40 years is a lot. Like people even in ancient times still just looked like a normal joe blow and not like so different physically that I would be able to ever know what time period they were born in. Life is wild man
Driving downtown Houston, Tx in my 71 Cuda playing this song as loud as my crappy Hi-Fi tape deck could muster! I was 18 years old in 78. I'm now 64 and anytime I hear this song, I'm transported back to those teenage years. It seems like it was only a few years ago. Damn! I kick myself in the head everyday for having sold that car.
I am 75 now and was around then when they all were and still great hits to listen to. Diagnosed with dementia I forget things from yesterday going back as the problem worsens but I have from the time I was 12 or so til I was 55 in the old memory banks so when I open up UA-cam I just have to refresh the songs into my mind again. And those 2 Ladies God you just got to love them...
It's definitely the recorded version, I've seen a snippet of the actual live version but I'm not sure if the whole thing is available to view anywhere.
Jaysus! I never realized until I borrowed my son's headphones (got kicked out of the living room; gaming sort of headphones ...very nice, surround sound) how completely amazing the drums are in this song. Everyone always focuses on the guitar riff but the drums - especially the fills - are top notch. Great production!!!
My uncle's band opened for Heart during one of there first tours and he said they were all amazed how Ann's voice was literally perfect every night... they had never seen anything like it
Absolutely badass. Saw them live in rapid City SD 1977. They sounded just like that.. no gimmick pure rock.. Drummer was way underrated.. entire band will never be matched.. Runaways started the girl rock music. Heart finalized it😂
Her, Amy Lee from Evanescence, and Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries are all 100% up there. A few others come close, but these 3 have to be the best. edit for the smart ass commentators: my top 3, that doesn't mean it's everyone's. duh

I don’t think Ann has ever been overlooked! She’s always been and always will be appreciated and applauded and respected as one of the finest singers of any genre ever. In a league with the greats Aretha Celine Whitney an absolutely marvellous voice.

I'm guessing you've seen the Heart cover of Stairway to Heaven? They NAILED it. Plant, Page, and Jones were all obviously moved by their performance. It remains one of the best covers I've ever seen.
@@spigglemyxic1261 Yes, I am a Led Zeppelin fan first and foremost. I saw the performance the night it aired actually and yes the Wilson sisters nailed it. I actually got goosebumps watching the performance. As I said, Ann Wilson is a powerhouse singer and she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Obviously with the progression of time her voice has diminished somewhat, but in her younger days, she could sing with the best of them.
This is one of the timeless anthems of Rock & Roll. . . Nobody makes music like this anymore. . . This is indeed one of the many great Rock Songs of all time.
i completely agree!! i think the most important feature of a song that hooks me is the voice. her voice is so freaking chilling. it literally gives me goosebumps when she hits those notes. 😩🤩
I was lucky enough to see Heart in 2014... Ann Wilson can still sing very close to the original. Also at the time, Jason Bonham was their drummer! Son of Zepplins drummer John Bonham. The encore song was Rock n' Roll!!! :) it was crazy
Perfectly said. She's had some life (ups & downs and everything else) but epic is exactly right. She just turned 70 (damn!) a few weeks ago and looks great and still has a powerful, incredible voice.
Anne has one of the most underrated voices, I personally don't think she gets the full recognition she deserves. An absolute rock goddess who's voice shook the Hallow'd and bellowed the heavens ❤
Was doing some heavy drugs when this came out. Most of my friends are gone but I'm still kick'in. I might be a wreck with emphysema, heart attack, arthritis, kidney disease and who know what else but I can say I've had fun. I really don't know how I'm still alive after several serious car wrecks, other accidents and lifestyle. It's a friggin miracle.
The drum work in this song is amazing and underrated incredible timing amazing drum fills not just a bunch of double bass all through the song ( amazing work Michael Derosier )
Just discovered Fanny yesterday evening. I am completely floored. Wish you'd have gotten your just due. I would have been a fan a hell of a lot sooner. Like 45 years sooner. You rock!!!
You're 10 years old, in a stolen Ranger traveling from Los Santos to San Fierro, and in the radio.. This song starts playing.... and from then on until the day you die, when you hear her beautiful voice, you find yourself smiling.
As good as the guitar licks are in this song (they really are), what has always impressed me was the drummer (Michael Derosier). Some songs just have an instrument that really stands out and the drumming in this song is incredible. Not taking anything away from Ann and Nancy, exceptional vocalists that continue to rock.
Honestly, I don't listen to the lyrics, I actually listen and feel the power the aggressive guitar riff and Ann's punching-to-the-chest kinda voice! I love her and the band!!!
I feel sorry for kids who could not experience radio during the 70's - every month practically was something truly new and good to hear, music was evolving fast in so many directions.
Best woman's voice EVER, awesome guitar riffs, rocking bass line. Perfect beat with perfect fills. And if all that aint enough, harmony between sisters.

Wow, cooooool mom!!!
Want someone to remember you.......introduce them to some incredible music. ;-)
Your Mom was awesome

Anne Wilson is truly one of a kind. Her voice is inimitable. She sang in an era when you had to be able to sing, and she could and did!
Well... You really should see Gretchen Wilson and Alice in chains perform this one.
Agree. None of that autotune shit.

This is some amazing music, no bones about it. Ann has a voice that I still don't find an equal to. She is literally my favorite vocalist, male or female, ever (Bruce Dickinson is my very close second-in his hayday).

Goosebumps/erection. This is the sexiest shit I’ve ever seen in my life
That’s because you’re a shark and not a cuda. 😆
Best woman's voice EVER, awesome guitar riffs, rocking bass line. Perfect beat with perfect fills. And if all that aint enough, harmony between sisters.
I grew up listening to Heart as a teenager. I only found this video early this year, and Ann’s performance blew me away!
Same.
Same thing here
Her voice is incredible, and she's gorgeous.
And the rhythm of the song is phenominal . . .
Probably one of the BEST rock songs EVER produced
@@Heavy-Franky The Drummer really keeps this moving.
So gorgeous
@Michael Jackson The Guilty Dead Pedophile At least the double of weight.
