    I completely agree.
You can list the things central to Sokka's character arc very easily, and it would read as a summary of who Sokka is and who he becomes:
    1. He's Katara's brother. This is easily his most central relationship. Every episode features this.
    2. He's a non-bender attempting to navigate a benders world.
    3. He's Comic relief - this is another element present in every episode.
    4. He's Hakoda's son, and a warrior. These qualities define his choices.
    5. He's Suki's boyfriend/partner. Sokka grows from a boy to a man, during Avatar, and the main way he does is as Suki's boyfriend, as she forces him to grow up.
These are the primary elements of Sokka. Sexism doesn't need to be front and center.
Great video - liked and subscribed.

What i always thought was interesting about Sokka's sexism in the Kyoshi Island episode is how he immediatety came back to apologize on his knees asking her to train him. That's how you knew that his sexist remarks weren't rooted in actual disrespect for women but his own insecurity about his lacking fighting skills. He wants to be a warrior to feel connected to his dad. I think an actual sexist wouldn't have come around this quickly. His behavior was still shitty, but he redeemed himself in an interesting way.
However I don't mind them handling it differently, i'm down for a more thoughtful Sokka when it cones to that 😂

    • @0725038
      @0725038 5 місяців тому +26

Exactly, his sexism was just another way to show his insecurity. They can replace it with anything else and it will be fine. It's not like the bring the subject, later on, it was only for the first few episodes then it's completely forgotten. They can easily put anything that would go towards his lack of confidence with the lack of bending or other power. It would go well with season 3.

@@IsraelLlerena They will. Because it's also stated in the article. Everyone focused on that quote, pretending "Sokka won't have a storyline anymore" (because apparently Sexism is his storyline according to these people) even tho the article says otherwise, as quote: " Also playing out differently is the absence of Katara and Sokka’s parents. In the animated series, their mom died when the Fire Nation invaded, and their dad is off fighting in the war. While the cartoon addressed this narrative, the live-action series makes it more of a lingering trauma that affects both siblings. For Sokka, “He’s dealing with what it means to not have his father and try to maybe lead when you're not fully capable,” Ousley says.
“I do feel like it's a recurring theme,” Kiawentiio adds. “It's such a big part of their lives.” "
Apparently the writers' intention will be to use Katara/Sokka and Zuko/Azula as "siblings foils" when it comes to their relationships to their parents (which is something the cartoon does too, ie Zuko and Katara bonding over their mothers' death/disappearence or the parallel between Zuko and Katara on 3x01 facing their fathers) because right after the article compares this role of Hakoda's absence on his kids to Ozai's presence in the show and how it influences Azula and Zuko as characters as well.

@survivorswapped7637 You're missing the point if you think his sexism was supposed to be funny.... The kioshi stuff was a very early character development that showed Sokka to be the kind of person who admits when he's wrong rather than doubling down... Even on things that are almost fundamental to his worldview and identity ... His dad left him behind because he wasn't yet a man and also told him to protect his sister. That was huge for him.
It was fitting for him to develop a need to assert that men are warriors and that he was a warrior and therefore a man as a way of dealing with what he felt was a personal failure that ended up separating him from his father.
I know his sexism resolves early, but the fact that it existed and then immediately changed was a very important and well integrated part of who Sokka was as a character.

But if they totally removed it, and this is how it sounded to me, just because they think that protagonist characters shouldn't show signs of sexism for even a second, I'm kinda nervous... they're gonna have to do something else that keeps Sokka from being a static character in the first book.

I agree an open mind is needed. I feel like many are so eager to dismiss the series outrightly --whether because of Ian's ethnic background or even from that very Entertainment Weekly UA-cam video, Kiawentiio saying how the OG series' animation doesn't allow for as much expressiveness compared to live acting which some just took as her arrogantly criticizing the source material. I think giving the benefit of the doubt is a proper attitude to seeing what might be a great live action adaptation of the series. If it doesn't meet expectations as Channel Awesome's Doug Walker said, in his real thoughts video on the Shayamalan video, we will still have the original series. Also, there will be many funny reaction videos to look forward to. I do think certain but minor changes are needed for character consistency in the original series, though. Like when Iroh and Zuko send the massive fireball at Appa, Aang, Katara, and Sokka, that is deflected by Aang into the side of a glacier or whatever causing an avalanche that damaged their ship, I think more clearly portraying Iroh as insincerely trying to bring down Aang might have been needed.
But if the series does poorly, I hope people don't resort to racism. As funny as I find hate videos for Shayamalan's film, I think the mocking mispronunciations of the director's name are uncalled for and clearly racist. I feel like people will turn on Albert Kim and accuse him of similar favoritism, too, that even the Normies mentioned when discussing how mostly South Asian actors were used for the Fire Nation. I feel like people will see Albert's usage of his daughter as a writer as nepotism and the choice of Lizzy as Azula as that same kind of ethnic favoritism. But all this aside, I can't wait for the series to be released

I think there’s are a lot of ways to develop a character that don’t have to involve that character being prejudice. I understand that it was a big thing for book 1 Sokka in the original but there were more interesting things about his character that the live-action can focus on if they don’t feel comfortable with the sexism thing. He's a child, from a tiny tribe where he is the eldest of a very small male population do to the men being away. To the creator's point, it can very easily be switched from blatant sexism to simply "In my tribe, we never had women fight. I guess I never considered they could" and many people, myself included, would be 100% fine with it. I think it's also worth noting that the warriors of kyoshi is literally the 4th episode in a 20 episode season. Remember we're only getting 8 episodes of the live action so if I were a betting man, I'd put Kyoshi at the end of ep1(cliffhanger) and into ep.2 (maybe 2&3 instead). This really doesnt give sokka too much screen time to be sexist in general, so they weren't really capping when they said they toned it down

My theory of why they took out the sexism is because the comedic beat was what made sokka likeable despite his opinions. So, for example, the opening scene. I did NOT like Sokka at all for the first few minutes because of the way he was treating Katara. Until the whole quip with "this is Appa, my flying bison.- Right. And this is Katara , my flying sister" where then Appa proceeds to sneeze on him, and Sokka hilariously rubs himself against the snow. You can’t imitate that in live action because the comedy of it is in how exaggerated the reaction is. Sokka always has something like that happen to him. Every time he's a lil whiny brick (and especially when he's trying to be a ladies man or undermine a woman), some power of the universe comes down on him and his reactions work because they are animated to look over the top.
I am sure we will still get a lot of comedy and clutch-my-pearls moments from him. But between how difficult it is to portray that comedic beat onto the screen, and the fact that you can only make a first impression once, I can understand why the showrunners chose to drop that aspect. Sexism isn't as overlooked as it was in 2007, even if back then, Bryke purposefully made Sokka sexist to put him in his place. It simply would be too risky to gamble on his likeability with the new audiences when you have such little space to not only make a good impression, but to write a coherent, believable episode.

Its not about his remarks, it's about his outlook. With all of the southern waterbenders killed or captured (besides Katara obv), there are no female fighters. And with all of the other older men leaving for the war, he was left as “the man of the tribe”. So with that isolation and upbringing, all he knows is “women do X things, and men do Y things”. And of course that kind of position would go to his head.
After he leaves the familiarity of his home, he comes to experience the world. And when he starts thinking with a more open mind, thats when his best traits start to blossom.

I know it might not seem so important to others, but personally as a person of indigenous descent, it sorta just sours myself to see roles with characters that were very blatantly based off the Inuit and such to be passed off to yet white people once more when I know for fact so many indigenous actors and actresses would be screaming and fighting to be able to play our heroes. Seeing indigenous characters [ even if it was just a fantasy nation ] on screen when I was young where their culture was just something so important was so important to me. When I heard we might get actual indigenous actors and actresses for the Water Tribe I was overjoyed for it before I heard that might not even be the case for Ian.

I did feel that seeing Sokka start as a sexist kid and quickly move to a more enlightened view, but it is a small bit of his start and not a big enough issue to bother me. This issue does, however, bring up an important point. Anybody who thinks that this should be the same, line by line and scene by scene, is really missing the point of doing a live action version of the show. First, some things that work fine in animation do not work the same in live action, so they need to be changed in some way. Second, since animated characters only age when the animators want them to age and live actors age whether it is convenient or not, you need to adjust for actual age over the length of the series. Third, if it is going to be an exact copy, then it isn't worth doing - we already have the original, how would a one to one copy be worth doing? What one should be looking for is a show that honours the spirit, mood and concept of the original. Yes, that includes doing some of the same scenes, though even there, if you play out the exact events but change the point of view, you get something new and yet the same. This is what makes a live action worth the effort to do. Maybe includes some bits we heard mention of but never saw, maybe show us something from the perspective of different character or just cut the scene differently. Even doing things like taking elements of two different scenes and combine them to create a new scene.

I'm of the team "I want to buy a full box of chill pills and give it to everyone in the fandom". Like, really. Chill.
It was a throaway comment from one of the actors, not something the writers themselves delved deeply into, certainly not something the writers "bragged" about (as I've seen some people say). And again, the article talks about it in the idea of "making things more grounded" with the characters and their storylines, and "toning down" Sokka's sexism, not erasing it. Obviously Sokka's sexism in the cartoon needs to be toned down in a live action: Sokka's snarky remarks are used as COMIC relief, through ridicule and/or just gags embellished by "womp womp" like music etc. Of course it also serves a purpose, but "toning it down" might just mean keeping the idea that it serves the purpose, without turning LA!Sokka into an incel by making him have the same remarks than in the cartoon. In the cartoon, it works because it's a cartoon. It relies on music, drawing, effects to be comical, things a live adaptation doesn't have.
Let's wait and see, it's chill, and maybe Sokka not being sexist but just purely prideful towards Suki (yknow, "Macho man" type of thing) can actually be interesting enough to explore as well. Like, idk what's so precious to "fans" about Sokka dismissing his sister as a maid on ep1. 🤷‍♀

Nevertheless, I am a little concerned that watering down Sokka's sexism may take away from his character development, in the sense that if we don't see him being _as_ sexist as he was in the first few episodes of the show, then him being respectful and learning from a girl may not be as worth it. It's far from being a deal breaker for me, it's just something I'll keep an eye out for while watching. Similarly to how I'm curious to see how they're going to handle Zuko's backstory. I'm excited to see all the Fire Nation bits, but I also think that Zuko needs to appear as a villain first in order for his redemption later to have an impact, and there's a chance they're going to go with the anti-hero route from the beginning if they show too much of his past from the get-go. But once again, not a deal breaker in any way, just something I'll notice while watching.

I mean, the original was a cartoon; it’s a lot easier to portray characters as over the top or in a more stereotypical way in an animated medium. This version is going to be live action, obviously, and I suppose it will be ever more slightly “grounded” than the original. This change doesn’t seem like to big of a deal to me.

Toning down sexism does not mean removing it. He was sexist initially but no one wants to be introduced to one of the main character with extreme misogyny. In anime, it comes across, a little goofy (coz of how extreme their expression are) but in live action it would come across very poorly. Not to mention, his misogyny last like 5 eps!! After meeting Kiyoshi warrior, he almost had an instant change in his attitude which won't show well in the setting of live action. It would be more understandable if he makes sexist comment here and there and later learns his lesson from the Kiyoshi warrior and starts changing his attitude!

For some reason though, when it comes down to this example everyone is totally ok with being that way. To be clear, I am not saying Sokka shouldn't be a dick because he has those tendencies to him that make him arrogant. Waterbender: Launch water at enemy.
    Airbender: Launch air at enemy.

Lol the whole sexist stuff is so dumb.
Sokka is about strength and weakness.
Sokka in the beginning saw strength as male and female. Because his southern water tribe is so small, and most men went for war and woman and children were left to protect the base. Hence he felt strong being the only male left behind
But as sokka travels with benders and learn that strength is not just male and female. He realised he was the weakest member in terms of power and not the warrior he thought he was. He was weak. But thats where he found a sword master and learnt that strength is not all about power as well.
Sokka in general is such a growing character and a very important character. He isnt just about strength and weakness but his dynamic as a leader in the group how he links strength to not just things he can analyze and quantify. Its his humour his leadership his quick thinking and his strong mindset that makes him strong. Sexist sokka is THE LEAST of a true avatar fan concern.

Although I am looking for the Netflix last Airbender avatar series. We have to keep in mind that the Animated series was lightning in a bottle. They made magic with that animated series. I sincerely doubt they can re-create the same type of magic in a live Netflix series. Sokka being a little bit of male chauvinist is a part of his journey. Although never a great attribute to have. Yet Sokka grows in wisdom and insight. As well as his abilities as a leader and a strategist. Not to say that they could not give sokka other personality traits in the show. That developed him into a young man and a leader. But with that change,, will they now make Sokka a Simp? That is a popular thing to do with male characters these days and entertainment. Which makes me wonder,, if they change sokka,, do they change the extreme racism that exist within the show as well? Many of the characters in the show,, are racist towards the fire nation. The fire nation is extremely racist against everyone. How do they take that element out of the show? But as you can see,, they are already tearing apart the characters from the animated series. To fit today’s social political issues. Which has been happening quite frequently in modern entertainment. writers tend to keep doing this every movie and TV show we watch these days. so I don’t have much faith in this new live action avatar. But I will keep my fingers crossed. If it doesn’t start acting right early, though,, I will just stop watching the series. Just like I stop watching marvel movies.
