  • In this video I discuss the production details and news of Netflix's Avatar the Last Airbender live action series set to come out this February 2024. I discuss the departure of Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, the controversial casting of Ian Ousley, the critiques about the costuming, and lastly, the worrying trend of remaking media in order to 'fix' the original's problems (i.e. Sokka being sexist).

the sexist thing pisses me off so much, out of all the sexist characters in netflix shows you take Sokka out??? Thats the only character thats being criticized for being sexist and his behavior is portrayed as a bad thing, which he also comes to relalize!!! Feels more like they didn't want to have a male character learning to change about his beliefs and become a feminist

The removal of Sokkas character flaws reminds me of the term the "disneyfication of media" how characters can't be "flawed" or even evil, they have to be "misunderstood".

I don't think ALL live action adaptations are bad but almost all of the ones I remember were very much bad. Not everything needs to be adapted or rebooted into live action. Hey Cheyenne, my understanding of the issue with Ian Ousley from Native mutuals and my own experience being from a non-federally recognized tribe isn't the federal recognition, it's that none of the 7 Cherokee tribes recognizes the tribe Ian is from. Even though the main federally recognized band from my tribe doesn't recognize my band, there are others of the 14 bands that do. For all 7 of the existing Cherokee tribes not to recognize the one Ian is from is what makes it suspicious. Again, this is just my understanding from speaking with Native mutuals and my own experience.

There are not 7 bands of the Cherokee tribe there are 3. I am Cherokee and in the process of locating my ancestors on the Dawes roll so I can finally register properly. Which means having to research this subject extensively. It is much too complicated to be condensed into a Twitter thread. People who are not Native have no place speaking on this spreading misinformation. This actor has been STALKED by people, his extended family harassed by randos on the internet obsessed with his racial background. How in the world is this not racism. This is sick. If you want to educate yourself about us do it using legitimate websites with credible sourced, not a Twitter post.
And yes he is not registered with one of the 3 federally recognized tribes. This doesn't mean he lied about his racial identity. He is mixed race with Native ancestry. The Dawes roll was created in the freaking 1800s. How people expect it to be accurate is beyond me. Try finding records of your family members from over a century ago and tell me how easy it is. There is a reason why MOST Native people are not registered.

I don't really think they made Azula a "mad woman", I think they pretty correctly showed what happens when you shake someone's core belief structure to it's very core.
Azula had been raised to belief that might made right, fear was the best way to control people, and that she was uniquely powerful. You actually see her start to unravel when Mai and Tylee turn against her. She had internalized being a monster ("my own mother thought I was a monster. She was right of course, but it still hurt"), and she could not imagine a world where anyone could be trusted if her closest subordinates would betray her. She held it together well enough until her only remaining source of validation refused to take her with him for the domination of the Earth Kingdom.
At the end of her fight with Zuko you really see all that lashing out was just due to fear and sadness. She didn't go mad, she just suffered the results of her father's abuse.

    • @hebedite4865
      @hebedite4865 5 місяців тому +21

not only her father's abuse, but her mother's as well. Her mother, to me, was more of an influence on the way she behaived in the show, and , even with the small amount of detail and backstory involving zuko and azula's mother, it still painted an incredibly deep picture of familial pressure on children and the resentment a lot of parents can have towards their children in a sort of jealous kind of way, as if the child's existence is a genuine source of anguish and self-hatred for their parents. It is done so well in the animated series like most other things were. It really packed SO much lore and real world problems into this nearly perfect tapestry of peak human artistic expression, i don't think a live action can ever live up to it, so they should have used stories from the comics/graphic novels that are literally just as intriguing and simply magnificent as the animated series was and still is.

I think the bigger issue is that we tend to call any woman who shows signs of sadness or anger a "mad woman", not that they showed a woman who shows angry emotions, which were understandable given the context, in a show. I think the whole "OMG they just turned Azula into a madwoman in the end!" criticism says a lot more about the person who made that criticism than it does about the creators of the show.

  • @lyricholmes1827
    @lyricholmes1827 5 місяців тому +269

Completely agree. A big part of Sokka’s identity is his drive to be a warrior. He’s been taught all his life it’s his duty to fight and protect his tribe, and it’s a huge burden for a sixteen year-old to take on. His father and the rest of the men have left to fight in war, and he’s the only man whose of age left to defend the tribe. It’s a huge responsibility, and at the start of the series he’s not a great fighter. But he’s brave. He stands in front of the Fire Nation ship on his own, staring down certain death, because he believes that’s his duty and he’s the only one who should be putting himself in the line of fire. If Sokka already believes woman are capable fighters, then he wouldn’t feel as if it’s only his burden to bear, and he wouldn’t be able to undergo such an great arc in the later episodes. We see him humble himself to the Kyoshi warriors. He learns that being a warrior isn’t just able being able to swing a sword, or even about being brave, but it’s about humility. Being open to change, asking for guidance and always being ready to learn. His world view changes and he becomes a better person for it. He comes to respect Suki, not just as a woman or as a person, but as a warrior in equal merit. And if Sokka didn’t learn how valuable humility is, I doubt Piando would have agreed to train Sokka later the series. Since it was Sokka’s admittance that he wasn’t a great warrior, and his lack of entitlement which make Piando want to teach Sokka. And after Yue, we see Sokka grapple even further with this notion that it’s his job to protect everyone, and if he doesn’t save everyone he’s failed. Which is something he needs to learn to let go of. More character development! And I think Sokka being a man who was brought up in a patriarchal society is central to a lot of his themes. Additionally, Katara standing up to her brother and Pakku, and proving that being a woman doesn’t make her any less capable wouldn’t hit as hard as if this wasn’t already an established cultural norm she was calling into question. In fact the Fire Nation is the only army which allows woman into their ranks, so it’s a norm which exists outside of the Water Tribe too. I also think animation is the best media for the story of ATLA, but the teasers and trailers do seem promising…

Avatar is so special because it doesn't give any craps about the type of stuff people obsessed with the culture war whine about today. Katara was such a compelling character that had a great arc because she was discriminated against and fought patriachical societies head on, Sokka had to get beatdown by women to the point he had to crossdress in order to be put in their shoes, and Toph came out the gate as the most powerful hero in the show at that point and her first scene was kicking the butt of that universe's equivelant to a WWE superstar. Things that would be considered woke today. Hell, it was arguably catching small degrees of flack for doing what it did back in the day. Forums and online discussions were full of Katara hatred going on and on about how she was too annoying. But the way it is made it age so well (look at that scene where Aang gets reprimanded for pointing out how the Fire Nation textbooks lied about the genocide of his people) and trying to water it down is just mind-boggling. We arguably need the political meat of a show like ATLA now more than ever.

He grew up without any male role models in a village full of women (I can't even remember any male Southern Tribe Members other than Sokka in the first episode). He picked up a very single minded and potentially toxic idea of how and what a man should be and acted on it. How should he not? Given that every other man in the tribe who could have given positive examples was absent for the most time. And he only got to be a badass AFTER he changed his viewpoints, especially after meeting characters like Piandao, who were basically all possible future versions of him.

I mean the fire nation is sexist, Zuko's mom's story arc makes that pretty obvious. The northern water tribe wasn't as sexist as the Southern tribe bc women definitely fought too, Sokka became that way because of the pressure he felt to protect the tribe after all able bodied adults left his village for the war. He doesn't even remember his mother so he definitely has no memory of the women who fought and were killed in his village, and he grew up thinking he has to protect and provide as a man bc theyre under constant attack. Hey great video, but a little reminder: I wrote a scientific paper of social work and the government acts in the context of indigenous tribes and their people in the US. Long story short. The reason, why many tribes are not on a Government funding list is, because the government forces different and different tribes to move into a reservation even though they want nothing to do with each other. If tribes resist this, they will be excluded from government support. But there are also other reasons, such as saving tax money, etc. This is a very complex problem. Many tribes want to be independent, but the state forces them to comply with these requirements in order to receive these funding. It is also possible that certain people are not listed on such lists; this can also have various social or other reasons. Sorry for my bad English, but it's not my native language.

Azula is literally the show‘s example of what happens to you if you keep choosing power over your own well being. She‘s not made a „mad woman“ so the writers could balance out her power. She literally loses her mind BECAUSE of her endless pursuit of power; anyone would. We see it in the Beach - all she knows is battle strategies and martial arts; she can’t make friends or find love. Haven't finished the vid yet, but colorism isn't identical to whitewashing. The actress for Katara is undoubtedly of a background that would suit the cast, but her skin is also very visibly lighter than animated Katara. While not the same ethnicity, many brown kids were entranced by seeing someone (regardless of race) with darker skin on screen. And it was entirely possible to cast someone who matched that in live action.
Sokkas case is more of a whitewashing issue.
Its just another big reason I will always perfer the animated version, and I am very much not looking forward to the live action. I feel it's largely a cash grab riding on the ATLA trend that flared up in 2020 upon its initial Netflix release. But the average viewer's 'obsession' with the series nowhere matches what it was during that initial wave. Only fans of the original remain, and they were skeptical from the word go.

for me, the only live action remake of an animated property that has ever made sense was the recent One Piece netflix adaptiation, even though im a huuuuge one piece fan and was very sceptical about it before i saw it. what makes it work in my eyes though are a few things:
    - the original creator was on board. in fact he said if he ever was going to make something like that, he'd want it to be now and he was excited for the project. and not only was he on board, he was executive producer and if he said something wasnt right, it had to be fixed as much as possible.
    - at least for the first season, they worked as often with practical effects as they could possibly manage and the sets they build were amazing. makes the whacky world feel so much realer than it ever could with cgi.
    - seemingly like 90% of the people working on this show were already one piece fans?
and the most important thing that just makes SENSE to make a live action series out of this property:
    - it speaks to a whole different target audience than the manga or even the anime. most casual consumers of anime/manga arent gonna sit down and start reading a manga that already has over 1100 chapters and is not even done yet. i mean, a LOT of people dont even know what manga or anime really are! however, an 8-episode season of a hit netflix show? so much more aproachable and .... "consumable". it just makes sense.
it does NOT make sense to remake a property again for the same target audience looking for the same thing that the original gave them. the original avatar series is on netflix! just watch that! i dont see how the remake will give you a better or even just much different experience than just watching that. i mean i hope its gonna be good? but im not super convinced. though i wasnt convinced of the one piece live action at first either, but when i saw the final result? absolutely blown away. maybe atla live action can deliver the same way...??

Im also very glad they made Katara darker than Sokka since usually women are always cast to be lighter than men. I think it came down to not wanting to cast an unknown actress, and she had to, sadly, be generically attractive. I saw no one talking about this movie but this Inuit Canadian movie called Slashback focused on Inuit girls in a fantasy ish setting and was super interesting (if very low budget), I watched it on an air canada flight haha: ua-cam.com/video/G2WCSz_hyHM/v-deo.htmlsi=_JFPC6HJQe0Uas0b

One: it would actually possibly make _more_ sense canonically, as we never see anyone from the Southern Water Tribe, other than Sokka, display any sexism, and it is canon that Gran Gran specifically left the NWT to get _away_ from sexism. And two: by making only the NWT sexist, it removes the iffy indigenous=sexist connotation.

As a huge Les Mis fan (a novel for which has been adapted so many times into so many different mediums that there is a separate Wikipedia page listing them, including over _forty_ film adaptations and more than twenty tv series) that doesn't offend me honestly. People will always want to tell and re-tell and remix beloved stories and have always done so since the beginning of stories. As long as they do it well, have good writers, and really respect and understand the spirit of the show (which I'm hopeful about, but it remains to be seen ofc) I don't see a problem with it.
The problem is that right now, every new adaptation of something feels like a corporate cash grab because of the nature of corporations, and because we're all disillusioned by all the Disney live action remakes. But there is nothing inherently wrong with a live action remake per se; it's just that the way Disney has been doing it feels off because for many of them, the writing wasn't great, they didn't have anything meaningful to add, Disney has been making so many of them AND their original content hasn't been great so it's giving off the impression that they just doing it to monetise on people's nostalgia, they're remaking films in live action that were released just a couple of years ago, and it's all done by the same company that released the originals.
Of course, Netflix is doing this to make a profit, but so far, it appears to me they got creators on board who are fans, for whom this is really a passion project, who want to make this as great as it could possibly be. Saying you can't remake the series in a different medium because the cartoon already told the story as well as it can be told is like saying you don't think the Lord of the Rings shouldn't have been adapted on screen because you can't improve on the original book. That's true, but I think many people agree that, despite changing some things, Peter Jackson and his team turned the book into three great films that are not better but just as well-regarded as the book.

Honestly, a live action feels pointless tbh. And my biggest gripe is that this story isnt really "adaptable". You could do a live action sure but youd likely have to copy on the original and there will always be that the classic is better bias lingering and if said classic is a one of a kind gold standard animation, its realistically not gonna work well. And if you change it, its ALWAYS gonna be not well received as much UNLESS the creator wished to change it so and defends it but nah he left. Also why are they focusing so much in doing a live action when they should be making better more stand alone stories of their own franchise or literally ANY OTHER story. Did they not learn from their first attempt with the movie? The budget spent producing a live action was better off put in perhaps a new project. Perhaps the new earthbending avatar?
Not enough funding? sell some damn merch. its how Evangelion funded their stuff.
Just make a new story/project and not bother with these live action adaptations that realistically cant even cover the entire plot line and would cost too much. Go ahead and try live action adapting One Piece. You know, a VERY LONG shounen series. Go ahead and see how that realistically ends up even if success does sorta come.

I actually think for younger generations focussing less on the “sokka supports women” and more on the “sokka becomes and upstanding man/member of his community (while still respectful)” could actually be a better/more impactful message. I think what I was hoping for with Sokka’s ark in book 1 is to demonstrate to younger audiences a beautiful example of being open to challenging your preconceived notions, be willing to unlearn, and doing so with humility and self-awareness? I hope I’m getting my point across this time! I agree, it’s a lot to hope for, but I think that kind of representation is so needed in a social climate where people are often quick to disregard others with different perspectives and so resistant to open dialogue and admitting their own faults.
EDIT to add: in Sokka’s ark, I was hoping that younger audiences might be encouraged to challenge themselves on their understandings of misogyny, patriarchy, etc., which I assume is influenced by “manosphere” crap-regardless of whether or not they agree with those wild theories, which are often presented as facts. I just think Sokka’s ark would be a good way to teach people that challenging yourself and doing so respectfully is commendable. Anyways I hope I made myself more clear this time! Cheers :)

Young boys feel isolated by society and so they turn to strong role models like AT etc who push misogynistic ideas. I think a storyline where sokka’s growth is focused on his insecurities and how they may manifest in harmful ways (more like books 2-3) could be a really impactful story for kids like that. Making the sexism less societal and more introspective also allows him to learn how to use the other water tribe men as positive role models (also more of a book 2-3 thing) which could be amazing to see.
Basically, while the original storyline is great, I think books 2 and 3 are the more resonant part today and I think focusing on that rather than societal stereotypes (at least through sokka) isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

@@malikabrown2357 hmm, I don’t think I talked about why I think the manosphere stuff has become so popular? I do agree with you that young boys feel isolated, which leads them to turn to certain role models that can radicalize them in various ways. I didn’t mean to centre a trend of adopting AT-style misogyny to highlight the importance of Sokka’s story ark. What I meant to say was that it’s important that there is representation of a young person/man who thinks/acts one way and is challenged to do differently. I think that Sokka’s ark could be a great opportunity to show audiences that you can change and grow, and you can do it with an open mind and with respect, humility, and self-awareness. I agree that the source of Sokka’s behaviour may be more rooted in his insecurities rather than societal ideas (but there’s also a conversation to be had about how macro issues manifest in micro settings), but I think it is still a great representation of a person who is willing to learn and unlearn things in order to grow as a person. And you’re right, Sokka’s story ark, in this regard, goes beyond those few episodes of Book 1; we see that he is constantly challenged throughout the series and it’s his open, clever, and sincere mind that is his greatest strength. My point in bringing up the manosphere stuff is to give context as to why such a storyline may be important for younger audiences-not just because it challenges a character’s misogynistic behaviour, but because it shows that you can change your viewpoints, you can grow, and you can do so as long as you are willing to. Again, young people, regardless of whether they agree with the misogynistic BS spouted by AT and the like, have been introduced to these ideas. They need to know that they should question things they are told as fact. It may be a good idea, then, to show representation of folks who are open to critical reflection and willing to grow-that growth can be applicable to challenging their views on gender, their self-perception/self-esteem, their views on traditions and religion, etc. I think my point was just that Sokka’s ark is a good representation of someone who is constantly in situations where he adapts his mindset in order to grow/help others-representation I think that is needed at a time of manosphere BS, alt-right BS, Zionist BS, and where people are quick to disregard other/opposing viewpoints solely because they don’t align with their own viewpoints.
Anyways, with all the being said, I really hope they don’t dumb-down Sokka and treat him just as a comic relief. Sure he’s a funny character, but I think it’s cleverness and heart that make him such a great character. I guess we’ll all see when the show comes out…

people think azula becoming mad is lazy storytelling, what??? i think it's genius. it makes sense on many levels. she has been defeated by team avatar a few times by that point already, so her self esteem wasn't that high, then her brother turned on the fire nation, then, most crucially, the two people she trusted the most, her two best friends really, betrayed her. she felt like she had control over her life before that, control over people around her, and then she lost it all. and that fragile mask slipped off, revealing the vulnerability inside. and yes i agree that if she was confident and sane they couldn't have defeated her, but how do you defeat an undefeatable foe? you make them lose themselves. team avatar had what she lacked - community, hope, strong relationship with each other. it's not lazy storytelling by any means

something that annoys me about how the fans talk about changes to the story/characters is how it usually goes like "how are they gonna do [character/story beat] if they're changing this other one?"
While I get that fans want to see everything from the original show in the live action, I think it's good to look at this work as it's own thing and focus more on the internal workings of the show. What I mean by this is like, if they change one element of the story, then it's likely that they will change a different aspect of the story to make it all work within the REMIX of the original that they have said they are making.
It would not make sense to take out Sokka's sexism and then still try to have him humble himself before the Kyoshi warriors, for example. If that happens then everyone has the right to be confused about it. I am giving the writers the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they are not stupid and understand this, but we'll see.

I have a fear that taking it out comes from a discomfort some men have with misogyny and sexism, who believe they've done the work and now that's in the past. (And they don't wanna give girls any "feminist ideas.")

A live action remake can also inspire a lot more people to give a story a try, but that’s because people don’t take animation seriously! It’s so frustrating when I have to avoid mentioning that something is animated, or when I have to convince someone that a story is good *in spite of* the medium.

I don't know where you got the idea that the inuit culture did not have a sexist society. It certainly does depend on region but my Dad and I spent a lot of time out in the wilderness of Alaska. The inuit tribes of the area had a big issue with domestic violence against women. Additionally at one point only men hunted and fished. So it left much of the housework to the women. When I saw the sexism of the water tribe it felt about right. Where some tribes have light sexism and others had a lot of it.

i hate live action adaptations of animated works with a passion. i've never watched something animated and thought "this should be live action". if anything i constantly think live action things should've been animated instead because i think they would be better able to convey the story if they used a medium where "impossible" things are easier to show (like magic systems like bending). especially with amazing animated shows like arcane and blue eye samurai coming out recently, i doubly don't understand the push for live action. the art style and movement in animation adds so much to the storytelling. for a show like atla where animation was genuinely one of its (many) strengths, i find it insulting that studios want to do the exact same thing but in live action this time. there is some amazing live action fight choreography but i genuinely don't think it's going to be as good with the atla fights. bending is very different to whatever is going on with john wick. it's just insulting to take a perfectly good beloved show and go "what if we do the same thing. but it's live action".

My main focus is on the actor of aang. In the series it takes over a course of a year, but if they are doing seasons then time will pass and the actor will mature and not look 12 anymore. I know aang grows in book 3 but not to the point of looking like Zuko and sokka. I feel they should have shot book 1-2 all together so the actor for aang looks the same age so when book 3 comes out he’d look a little older but not soo much if you get me?
Also with the colour of katara and sokka skin tone I do feel they could have gotten darker indigenous people for the roles, but the people they got do have the feel of the characters so I’m okay with it.
The whole issue with sokkas actor, I’m not sure what to say about that since I haven’t looked much into it. But if he’s half indigenous and white and lied for the role then that’s unfair. But it’s too late now and he seems to be doing a okay job from the trailers

It was mostly down to the elements rather than the culture(s) they based each nation on. Water was the most obvious that could be divided by sexism (fighting vs. healing), while the other elements didn't have these separate properties. Fire was the most egalitarian-friendly, the great equalizer between genders, while water was the most easily sexually divided. Earth was somewhere in between, but we also have to understand that earth bending had the least cultural impact on its titular nation as the Earth Kingdom was the largest and had the least amount of benders compared to the other nations.

I understand the valid criticisms, but I feel like many people are blowing certain controversies out of proportion without giving this live-action a chance to stand by itself. Much of the recent backlash regarding Sokka's sexism has been based on a single quote from a single interview the actors did, and some outlets took it for a headline so that's the only thing people read without reading the original, entire interview. I definitely have a bias for this show because I've been following its development closely since the adaptation was announced in 2018, but as an Asian-American who originally watched ATLA while it was airing, I want this adaptation to succeed and feel sad to see that many people have already written it off from some interviews. I understand that it may seem superfluous to make another live-action adaptation, but the showrunner, Albert Kim, has said one of the main motivators to do this (despite even his son's initial hesitance to support the effort who is a fan of ATLA) is to have an epic, big-budget franchise that centers around Asian culture, stories, and characters which does not exist in the Western world. For that, I am cheering this effort on, and many of the Asian American actors in the cast who have watched bits of the show seem to champion it as well.
The showrunner Albert Kim has discussed extensively in all the interviews how much he reveres and respects the show. The first episode was actually co-written with Bryke when they were still involved in the production! Maybe it is silly to have blind faith in the writers and producers, but I believe the choices they made to diverge from the original served a purpose based on how much care the cast and crew displayed when discussing their rationale behind how they cast each character, what it took to figure out the sets, and translating the narrative from a 2D cartoon into a 3D serialized drama.
I hope they still include the sexism arc in the show, though. My interpretation of the interview was that they are toning down what Sokka says explicitly ("Girls are better at fixing pants than guys, and guys are better at hunting and fighting") which may be a simple way to portray his sexism to something more understated but just as insidious. Anyway, that is the end of my essay LOL. I appreciate your more balanced take in this video as opposed to a lot more reactionary takes I've seen!

I do think making the only darker skinned members of the main cast sexiest was a flaw of the original but it also feel that each nation was assigned a big “flaw” which is unrealistic.

Season 2 and 3 are only as strong as they are because they stand on the world and characters that Season 1 took the time to build up. Are there things that could've been handled better? Ofcourse, but it does it's job very well of introducing the world, establishing characters and goals, showing the traumas of war, and preparing these children for war and the grittier things to come all in a way that anyone of any age can find palletable. If the live action plans to expand on the traumas of war, they REALLY need to go beyond just showing brutal imagery like the genocide, otherwise it's just PG 13+ ATLA without more nuance🤷‍♀️

based off what I’ve seen of how the characters are gonna look in live action, the only thing I really don’t like is how they did zuko’s scar, like in the show it was definitely a 3rd degree burn since a flame slightly larger than a hand was held to his face, but it still looks nothing like a burn scar. it looks more like some eyeshadow they put on the actor

Netflix, having a sexiest character who grows to come to their senses is good. Just think of a sexiest, racist or otherwise problematic youth seeing a role model in someone who thinks like them. This role model then goes through events and circumstances that show them how they’re wrong, their life stories gradually showing them evidence of the wrongful aspect of their character and rational explorations; not explanations of why they must change. The sight of a person simultaneously reasoning themselves through an issue and being viscerally confronted by the consequences of their actions.
Our hypothetical sexiest youth is learning why they’re wrong, the futures that await them if they fail to change, and the brighter futures awaiting them if and when they do change. It is a simultaneously intellectual and emotional experience that shows a misguided individual processes these events in their lives. How to let go of misguided dogma and live a better life.
Edit: I just wanted to add that if having the sexiest role model see reason is a huge and important aspect of Sokkas lived experience, and the lessons he learned are hugely important to the new generation. Removing this does both a disservice to Sokkas character and the series. ALAB is a show that does a lot of things simultaneously. Without Sokka navigating the issues that surround his sexism and understanding he must change what else is there to structure his early character arc? Even if the beginning episodes have already shipped, maybe they meet Toph on Kyoshi Island or similar on the way North. She could be retconned into a very neurodivergent youth and have Sokka be the bigot there. Then he can still have his character arc and the most essential aspects of his story are retold differently.

I like Sokkas sexism to humbleness transformation storyline as much as the next person, but imo his sexism isn't really the main character flaw in the original; his sexism is more part of the entire more arrogant "I'm a great warrior and leader" storyline, and over the course of the series, he becomes more humble. His sexism was part of that in the original, but it doesn't have to be. Actually, after having had a few days to think about it, depending on how they do it, it could make a lot of sense.
They could either take it away completely and just focus on Sokka's overall character arc (and people can still be arrogant assholes even when they aren't being sexist; he can still learn and grow). Which, if they _do_ keep the sexism in the Northern Water Tribe, could serve as a juxtaposition *and also* would get rid of the iffy "Indigenous people are all sexist" connotations. Actually, the more I think about this, this works really well canonically because, other than Sokka, we never see anyone else from the Southern Water Tribe being sexist in any way, and it is, in fact, canon that Gran Gran specifically left the NWT to get away from the sexist culture there.
Alternatively, they could tone it down a bit, rather than removing it. That would also make sense, because Sokka's very blatant "men hunt, girls sew" sexism is very kids'-series (and they seem to be going for a slightly older target group) and very 2000s. It's been almost 20 years since the original show and the world is different; the conversation around sexism has changed to more subtle things, so it could make a lot of sense to update the tone of the sexism because some of the lines would just "date" the show, especially to new audiences. LOOK THIS CHARACTER IS SO BIGOTED (especially in a character like Sokka, who is somewhat more misguided) would frankly just come across as bad writing nowadays. (Not saying it was bad writing in the original, but I think I agree with the creators that this doesn't translate really well 1:1 to a new medium and to this different time.
Like, don't get me wrong, they could still fundamentally screw this up, but we don't know that yet. Let's wait and see what they do with Sokka's character arc and how they tackle the issue of bigotry before we come to any conclusions.

@@Casutama The Northern water tribe isn’t sexism. It’s cultural values. It’s not that they believe women can’t be water benders, but that the interest of the community is better suited for them to be healers. It’s also important to note that if Katara hadn’t gotten those lessons, Aang would have remained dead at the end of season 2.

@@loganleroy8622 Cultural values can be and often absolutely _are_ sexist. In the real word as well as in fiction. Cultural values don't make something magically valid; people have done everything from hurtful things to actually causing harm because of genuinely held cultural beliefs. Sexism because of cultural values doesn't make the sexism any better. That is the point that episode is trying to make. And seeing as Katara, as far as we know, only attended one single healing lesson and had, prior to that, already discovered healing on her own, it's not really implied in the text that there was anything specific she learnt in that one lesson that made the difference in terms of saving Aang's life.
There's nothing wrong with healing, it's an important bending art. The sexism stems from saying "all men learn one style of bending, all women learn another, and never shall the twain overlap or intersect".

I hope we aren’t mistaken about these being the possible reasons that Mike and Brian left the show. I hate these changes as everyone else does, but what really frightens me is I heard somewhere that Mike and Brian left the show in the first place because they wanted more changes. This scares me for the future of what they create with Avatar studios. Idk if anyone else heard this but I just wanted to throw this out there.

I've heard it as well, but I don't know how much of it is true though, so I'd take it with a grain of salt... But we don't have to go far to see that Mike and Brian are definitely not infallible, as (even though I personally liked it) a lot of the fandom HATED TLOK with a passion, and they created that, too...

@@Whatever94-i4u Very true. What I worry about is a podcast episode that they were on a while back with the official ATLA podcast. They said that they would definitely change some things about the ATLA show if they could go back. When they said that I was like so confused because I thought, and many others thought as well, was the final form of the show they created was already perfect. Just worried about the future a little bit, but obviously I will watch what they make.
