I’m so happy they are prioritizing low vision and disabled actresses. As a disabled person seeing actual disabled actors play disabled roles just makes me so happy
Agreed! I’m blind so seeing that made me happy.
@@madelinegarber7860 No ur not.
@@southerncoastproductions7587 of course I am. Have been since birth. I use a software on my phone that makes it speak aloud to me.
@@madelinegarber7860 Theres no way software does that for you.
Ditto! As a wheelchair user I hate seeing people act like users. It’s stupid.
Honestly, the backgrounds being slightly off is a non-issue to me, in the grand scheme of things. Where the show is struggling most is its character writing, that's what needs fixing. I feel like most people would be forgiving of the scenery and the some of the miscasting if the characters were just better written, since that's widely hailed as one of the original show's biggest triumphs.
They can fix the backgrounds and the costumes and make it look as pretty as any other show out there, but unless the writing improves, the show is still going to suffer.
While I'm glad to hear how on-the-money Toph's casting call description is, I can't say I'm too optimistic about how the show will handle her character, based on how they've handled the others so far... That said - I would LOVE it if the next season had a massive quality improvement and surprised all the fans like myself who have been, thus far, pretty underwhelmed with the show. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
One of the original's show's what? Your sentence cut off.
Completely agree 💪
Agreed. I couldn't finish the first season. The complete tone shift to try to be a sort of dark game of thrones thing instead of a hopeful wuxia in spite of the darkness of the world, in addition to the various writing and character changes, just killed it for me. I thought the actors were good and the casting was good, but the writing... After each episode I found I would go watch the original version, and after four or five, I just stopped watching the remake and went and rewatched season one of AtLA again instead.
100% agree. The problem with the show isn’t the background or location or whatever and certainly not the overall visuals. The problem is the writing and, frankly, the acting. Yea I guess it’s kinda cool they’re getting an actual blind person to play Toph and it sounds like they understand the character. But if the actress can’t pull off a convincing performance then it doesn’t matter.
@@akilbrazier1421 that's what we all want at the end of the day
I like that the casting call is encouraging actors who are blind or low vision to audition. I personally think that it would be great if a blind or visually impaired person could be cast, it would be good representation. Before everyone comes at me just think about it for a minute, you'd be surprised at what blind and/or visually impaired people can do.
It would also be easier to sell her blindness probably.
Stop with representation, you need talent not disabled people who can't act.
I'm not saying people with a disability can't act!!
I just want them to pick someone who has talent and not English because they have all the diversity boxes checked
I understand that the characters are going to age, but even if the others are older for season 2 then they were in the original, Toph should still only be twelve to start off with, because I always thought one of her main character traits was not just that she was blind, but also the irony of how tiny she is on the outside while being someone like “The Boulder” on the inside.
Well who said that they are making her taller lol?
50% of season 1 was on location, but I think it needs to be 90% at least. I LOVE that they're including blind and low vision actresses in the casting for Toph, but I do hope that they utilize the best actress for the gig and not just try to score brownie points (not that I think they would, but just saying)
90% is justifiable I think and also at the end just cast a good actress and it's whatever to me I don't care
I agree, get the best actor they can for Toph. It's crucial that they get that casting right. It doesn't have to be Diana Tsoy.
... bruh they ruined katara i alr gave up
@@Loke_nokecry about it
No of course not it doesn't have to be Diana I should've made that more clear in the video
@@rftg1793 I did cry about it. Sad that they ruined her character. Hopefully they give the actress better material next season
@@rftg1793 💀💀😂😂 bro is mean for no reason its funny lol, any how i really hope they dont ruin toph but i got no hope if they ruined katara
Yes! I was recently talking about how someone who is actually blind should be casted as Toph. She is one of the few blind characters in fiction who isn't an old man who can see the future, and so one of the only few characters available for young blind actors to play. Cast disabled characters with disabled actors! This is great news.
It doesn't always have to be that way but it could be cool if a blind actor offers something more to the role but at the end of the day get a good performer who's got good chemistry with the rest of the group and we are good
I said this on another video but Ms. Soy isn’t the only one that can play the character. She’s just the only one you’ve guys seen play her so you can’t imagine anyone else doing it. As a guy who’s in the tv/film industry, trust me when I say there’s a lot of better options.
"there’s a lot of better options": Like whom? Remember they also have to fit the race and age criteria.
There wasn’t better options for Katara? Cuz they messed that one up so I’m not buying it
@@07Flash11MRC there’s thousands of actresses that fit the bill. Just because we don’t know them, doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Trust me, they do. The actress they pick most likely won’t be well known.
@@demigreen6495 Katara and Azula were badly cast. I thing both actresses faces are too chubby. Princess Yue was a bad cast as well. She won’t be back so there’s nothing to worry about on that front.
@@07Flash11MRC TRINITY BLISS would be an amazing choice as well hopefully her team would reach out to NETFLIX
Getting the right character to play Toph will make or break the show
Can't be more broken then season 1
Make or break might be a bit too much but I agree her portrayal will be important to help glue together the main gang and their chemistry
you mean the right Actor.
@@uncleirohsteashop it might as well given how lifeless the rest of them already feel. if toph feels just as awkward and boring i dont see a lot of people sticking around.
I’m planning on submitting an audition! I really want the part because Avatar is my childhood and when I started wanting to become an actor, I really badly wanted to work on something from my childhood either a video game franchise or cartoons and now I have that chance.
Hey that's awesome! Good luck on your audition!
@@uncleirohsteashop thank you!
good luck!
@@jayman1462 Thank you too!
good luck you got this!
I definitely agree with you with the the background. Like it was very noticeable that they were not in a real environment. Really glad that they are moving forward to real locations. I understand that they had to use a lot of cgi but there’s a time and place for it. Hm my girl Toph… I just need the actor to really nail her personalities. She better make blind jokes but can still be serious when she needs to be. Whoever the actor will be I just hope they can really bring Toph to life. She’s my favorite character so sigh I’m gunna be picky lol. Another thing I need to see overall with S2 and S3 is better chemistry with the characters. Like honestly S1 some of the dialogue between characters I just didn’t feel the connection, it felt flat and stiff. I really do hope that they will listen to fans what we like, what we didn’t like and what can be improved.
Slight correction:
"to become the fierce warrior she IS inside"
She IS a fierce warrior. She doesn't just believe she's one
I think that's sort of a play on words lol
It gives me an uneasy feeling that they're going to change the fact that she is the best earthbender in the world before they even meet her.
@@goeiecool9999 who said that? We as fans know she is.
@@uncleirohsteashop I'm probably just reading too much into the casting call. Becoming a warrior wasn't really Toph's problem in the original. It was more to do with learning to accept help, because in her upbringing all forms of help were restricting and belittling her. Being a warrior vs. believing you are a warrior are two different things and in the original Toph was always unquestionably a warrior in spite of what others thought of her. She wasn't insecure about it either. So this particular choice of wording seems to suggest that in the Netflix adaptation she needs to _become_ a warrior. That would be quite a fundamental change to her character. If that is the case I hope they thought that change through 😅
@@goeiecool9999 I'm pretty sure they are just saying that because fans know she's the best
Prioritising low-vision/blind folks for Toph’s role is SO amazing! That’s how it should be done!!!
Why?
@@Alpha1918 what reason would there not be?
@@fodonogue3 you can’t answer a question with a question.
I wanted to hear your reasoning for why searching for a blind actress is “how it should be done”
@@Alpha1918 I absolutely can. What reasoning would there be for there to not be a blind actress for the role of a *blind* character? Especially when they’ve held up to casting characters more authentically, like Kiawenti:io for Katara who is clearly inspired by the Inuit of Turtle Island. Blind people know blind people best. It would be fantastic representation, too, on top of already great representation.
@@fodonogue3 ok so you’ve stated your only reason to be because they did it with other characters. That doesn’t explain why it’s beneficial though.
As for a reason for why a non-blind actress could be cast, well because you’re not limiting the casting pool. When you restrict it like that, a lot of good actresses are now ruled out because they can see.
I hope "unfiltered'" means Toph finally gets to say fuck XD If they can burn more people on screen than the average Game of Thrones season, they can let Toph swear.
Maybe, but that specific term seems a but, much, doesn't it,lol?
I personally don't think we need explicit language to be "mature", the OG show wrote itself, and is a perfect guideline to have, just follow the beats, don't change the core of the story, but change how they get to the destination, and this season will work better than the first, hope they don't ruin her, she is my favorite character in the series, lol. 🙏🏾
Lol no that's not what unfiltered means it just means that they'll let her do her thing with the gang as she was a menace with them in the cartoon
@@NerdyGamerReacts when they say unfiltered they mainly mean her comedy not that she can swear
@@uncleirohsteashop Thanks for the response, I honestly hope the same thing, there was a think twice where a character said damn it, in the first season, seems like it was a bit edgy to me, but idk, season 2 and 3 r coming, though I gave the first season between a 4 & 5 out of 10, I am hopefully that the others are better, don't ruin Toph, she's hilarious and awesome. 😆
It's a fucking 12 year old.
Of two minds on the idea they're looking for a blind character. In part because on one hand they're looking for someone who is blind, but they're also looking for someone who acts as though they can see most of the time (through earthbending, through whatever means, it's a common trope.) A sighted person can learn to fake being blind convincingly (see Daredevil), but without good stage direction and a bit of skill/talent, a blind actor may have trouble selling the idea that they can see through their earthbending.
I guess what I'm saying Netflix, is please DO NOT feel like you must cast a blind person who is less ideal for the part just because they meet some token diversity quota. We don't need to be pandered to or patronized.
Oh, we do need faithful representations of disability in media. Sighted or blind, you can do that if the time is taken to show that even without earthbending, Toph was never "blind and helpless", not with her personality! Show her running away, finding a downed limb (possibly by tripping over it), feeling it up and down, pulling away smaller limbs and leaves from it, fade to the last moment of her stripping it into a cane at least 2/3 her height… Show her probing the ground in front of her, smiling, and moving on. Then show her meeting badgermoles if you like. Anything remotely like that would show you Get It when it comes to blindness and that you understand Toph, regardless of who you cast.
Being blind myself, I'd certainly love to see a blind character be cast … but given the choice I want the show to be good over the show ticking some token inclusion box.
I don't care, get a good actress blind or not and we are fine.
Finally someone who has the same concern as me! And I'm happy that visually impaired people also love Avatar. Speaks volumes about how the visuals aren't the most important thing, but if the writing and the rest is good that's enough. That also kind of exemplifies what people have been saying about the Netflix show. Make it as visually stunning as you want, it doesn't help if the writing is bad.
It doesn't HAVE to be Diana Tsoy, but I would be stoked if were! I feel like she already gave a fantastic audition, and nailed the character. She looks like Toph, sounds like Toph, and moves like Toph. They would be hard-pressed to find someone who is a better fit.
HAVE to be? No, it doesn't nor did I say that but she would be great!
Yea toph is a great character that deserves a great actor. I'm also happy they are prioritising low vision/disabled actors. she is one of few young blind actor playable characters. It's also crucial they get the casting right.
One issue I can potentially see with casting a blind actress is that, for the most part, Toph often needs to move as though she CAN see, since in a way, she kind of can. I suspect that’s at least part of why they cast Charlie Cox for Daredevil, instead of a blind actor, cuz he needed to be able to move like he could actually see, but from what I hear, people said he still portrayed a blind man very well and accurately.
I am not as smart as some people out there when it comes to these kinds of things in filmmaking but I am sure there's a way they do it
@@uncleirohsteashop They’d probably have to have a stunt double do all the scenes where she’s moving like she can see, in which case we wouldn’t get the actual actress as much, and all the action scenes involving Toph would have to be shot from further away, or from behind.
@@Ranger74352 we'll just have to wait and see what we get
I'm glad they aren't worried about spending more money on this series by not doing volume, it shows they want to make the best product they can with season 2 and 3.
I agree at least from a production design perspective, I hope they take notes from a show like Shogun. Shogun exemplified great production design!
diana tsoy got everything, she sounds EXACTLY like toph, she got the attitude the moves, shes the perfect fit
I absolutely disagree on hiring a blind/low-vision actor because then the actor would act like a blind person and that is a problem because Toph can see as well as a person who isn't blind, the only thing she's blind to is the sky and objects that aren't touching the ground. I DO NOT want to see a blind actor who walks and interacts with people and things like a blind person because that just isn't who Toph is!
this doesn't mean I hate disabled actors, my uncle is blind. it's just that I REALLY don't want Netflix to fuck up my favorite character in Avatar the last airbender
Honestly I agree, heck Charlie Cox manage to be a good blind actor for Dare Devil, I just think it'll be alot more harder to find a person that is blind, can act, knows martial arts, a kid, ect. At that point just get someone who fits the part even if there not blind, they kinda shooting themselves in the foot here if they do this.
As long as the actor is good at their job I don't see the issue
@@yuukianimates3318 we don't know if they are shooting themselves in the foot. They could easily do it regardless what kind of person they cast, blind or not.

I really hope they go with the actor that did that little short choreography. She was spectacular. And having the characters be a little older doesn’t bother me. Real humans age.
The one thing that at the end of the day the live action could not control was the aging of the kids
This is great news and all, i just hope they will improve on the script/dialogue, as well as making the characters not feel so flat. It was like the show didn't allow them to fully become their roles. Zuko is the only one that felt completely like himself. Sokka being very close. If the actress is blind or not what matters is if they do a good job. If the actress was blind and didn't act well I'd say it, if the actress wasn't blind and didn't act well I'd also point it out. Someone being blind doesn't affect their acting.

Honestly, I don't think the actress themself needs to be blind, as that's how acting is supposed to be, but I am still excited no matter who they hire.
(Reason I say this is not to be rude or anything, but acting itself is to play characters that aren't you and if we hinder the search to be that narrow than we will miss many talented actor/actress that would do great in the role)
At the end of the day, the way I look at casting for a project will firstly always come down to if the actor/actress is talented and can play the role of that character to their personality and mannerisms. In the back of my head, I also recognize that I would want to look for all kinds of actors who could play the role based on certain characteristics. Yes, the disability is what's most important for the actress, not acting prowess. This show doesn't capture the original characters and their story arcs at all, and its things like the preoccupation with casting the correct disability instead of the writing and acting talent that are to blame. Focus on the story and talent and everything else is 2ndary. Its like when game makers start focusing on how many polygons and how much photorealism they can achieve and leave the story and mechanics by the way side. Story comes first period. And honestly this seems to be what Disney's problem is too, if the original was so perfect and loved, why remake it? How will that make it better?
My guy who said they weren't focusing on good actors? Do you think they just hire a janitor off the street to play the characters? Come on be more reasonable.
@@uncleirohsteashop not saying at all they have no standards, but they are focusing their selection from a self limiting, tiny pool of candidates. I agree, I would love for them to find someone to check all those boxes, but they have been missing the spirit of their characters which is what matters most. Maybe that isn't the actors fault but the writers instead. All I know is that I'm a huge fan of the series, and my favorite character is Toph. I really want to get the same feels from the live action as I did from the animated series but sadly its not the same story, and not even in a *better* direction, whatever that would mean.
@@WillFader whether or not the actress personifies the character will have nothing to do with her being blind. A non-blind or blind actress can easily mess it up and not do a good job.
@@uncleirohsteashop exactly my point, but like I said, they are just reducing the pool of excellent actresses by narrowing the scope of their search. My only point is that they should be focused on finding great actress, and not narrowing their search in a way that wouldn't necessarily help produce better candidates.
My only desire is that they end up with an excellent actress regardless. If she's blind as well that is a plus.
@@WillFader again though no one said they aren't focusing on finding a good actress lmao
Tbh I thought they would of one of the main actors chosen by now, seems a bit late to only just be doing casting calls.
No not really lol especially given they only just recently got the green light to do the next two seasons
@@uncleirohsteashop no they haven't, there were reaction videos of the cast finding out 3 months ago
@@PickledSmoothBrain they to write the seasons too my guy
Mid to late teens is crazy
not really lol it's just 14 or 15 to 20 relatively
uh i just want tea sir.
No problem nothing wrong with just having tea
bro wtf, has diana soi actually paid u guys? she made a fan video thats it, why are both u and avatarist shilling her with same exact words.
This may be foreign to you, but people DO actually have likes and preferences without needing someone to pay them
It's just an opinion or option... lol relax
That was far from the same words.
@@Vaquedoso bro I ve seen two videos about this news and both of them are saying the same exact opinion with very similar wording
Lol no offense but don't you dare through around the "shill" word here ok. Aside from that, it was a recommendation it's not our personal preference of she's the only one who can play her.
Only now they are looking for Toph cast ? Guess they were busy with all the rewriting.
Jokes aside , why are they casting someone who is specifically blind , wont that create even more problems for casting and filming specially for the action parts ? What is the problem with having an actress pretend she is blind, this is acting after all.
There's a video from Oakwyrm discussing a blind Star Wars character being played by an able bodied actor if you're interested in hearing what the opposition has to say.
Lol not rewriting just regular writing of the next season. To me as long as the actor is good at their job then I don't care. Also, remember they aren't only looking for someone completely blind but also low vision. In a way it could give more passion to role if the actor were to take it on.
Backgrounds were a non-issue for me. I couldnt get over the horrible writing, the blend of books, Aang not being the main character and it was Katara's waterbending journey while Aang didn't touch it. Touph being mid to late teens sounds like a mistake as part of her arch is being seena young, fragile, handicapped 12 year old. Being around Suki and Sokka's age isnt going to feel right. Im not saying older actors and actress can't play younger characters, Disney did it all the time, but she needs to look like the badass 12 year old she is.
Someone who plays 12 but is 15 in real life can still work it just depends on how you personify it and act it out. Many actors have done it before while some have not. Obviously it gets COMPLETELY out of hand when a 30 year old is meant to be playing a high school aged person. So many examples of that in film and tv history and it usually never works. 12 and 15 is only three years apart so I am not that mad about it. Also, Aang was the main character of the show lets not get carried away here.
nothing matters unless they improve writings. first season was so bad because of it. if they don't change the writing team it will remain mediocre.
I don't agree that it was bad but to each their own, I don't deny some writing needs changing so we'll see
Mid late teens?! She's supposed to be like 12
They are looking for an actor in that age range remember that, it doesn't necessarily mean they are gonna make the character that
It’s already fucked, but still a blind actress is the only good thing so far
I don't agree it's already fucked lol
I dint care. I fell off ever since they broke the world's magic rules and had Aang flying.
Lol that's what made you fall off the show?
This show can’t be redeemed with how badly they’ve botched all the characters in the first season.
Don't agree with that at all
The great decision would be to stop the massacre right now... season 1 was bad enough already, no need for more
Lol I don't agree S1 was a massacre, plenty of good to great shows in the past have shaky and mixed first seasons and then go on to be better through each subsequent season
@@uncleirohsteashop I don't agree with you not agreeing
If you don't build your house on solid ground.... the whole thing crumble when you try to build more
This adaptation change too many important things.. like one of the most important thing in the whole show, the reason Aang ran away and the huge guilt he feel thought the rest of the show.. until he finally overcome it, accept what happened, accept his destiny
@@Alice.59 you don't agree with me not agreeing? Lmao that's not how that works. Don't be all high and mighty thinking that way.
@@uncleirohsteashop Not agreeing with you just mean I have a opinion that differs from yours. How does this make me "all high and mighty" ? Am I not allowed to disagree with your opinion and have my own
@@Alice.59 you said "I don't agree with you not agreeing". When I read that it comes off as if you're saying that you can't understand me for not agreeing with you and that your opinion is better and correct.
Are people still gonna watch this? I'd rather just watch the animated series again then this major issues of a series
Lol I am confused why you'd leave a comment on this video then if you feel no one cares enough. Also it's completely within your right to continue watching the animated show you don't have to watch the live action.
the problem is the writing. it is god awful. i wouldve been happy to ignore a lot of issues with the show but it was disrespectfully bad.
I don't personally agree that it was that level of quality. I didn't think it was a good first season to be clear but it was ok.
Why does the actress need to be blind ?? like, I get casting someone that can portray a blind person, but I feel like this only limits the possible pool of actors to a really low number.
They never said fully blind is all they are looking for though so they won't be limiting themselves too much
@@uncleirohsteashopactually, you are right, I confused the top line with the lower line as a requirement, not as a role description
@@ast8177 ya it makes it make more sense
A blind actor might sound great on the surface for toph, but not being able to see the martial arts movements to learn them and how they look would be a big challenge I’d imagine. It’s already a challenge for a typical child actor to get those martial arts movements right. A blind teen might have even more difficulty.
Emotions like happiness or sadness will likely look different on a blind person as well. That’s not necessarily bad or anything, some people might recognize it as showing what these emotions look like on a blind person who has never seen these emotions expressed by others. However, I think most of the audience will simply say it’s bad acting and be enraged by it.
Finally, when an actor can’t see the original show it will be much harder for them to imitate “the look” of the character. Personally, I don’t mind that but I can already see the angry comments that show a lack of understanding towards that reality.
Then again, maybe they’ll find a great blind actress and prove me wrong. We’ll have to see.
I'll offer up a different look to this idea if you hear me out. What if this actress if blind absolutely KILLS it with the action scenes and nails down what she's doing. I almost at that point have the most amount of respect for her that point given what she is doing and appreciate the performance even more.
@@uncleirohsteashop of course, that’d be fantastic… but you kind of just asked me what I would think if she nails the action and the acting, and anyone that manages to do that would be doing a good job as an actor.
I hope my initial comment didn’t sound harsh btw. It’s just that I figured there would be extra challenges for a blind actor, especially since television is a very visual medium in general. So any blind teen actor that can accurately portray toph would be on another level of acting altogether since they have to overcome much larger hurdles.
@@twocents7509 I get that for sure I don't think you were trying to come off as harsh at all
Casting a blind person for Toph does not make sense to me. Yes, she is blind but she can see through her earth bending, and that's why she can move as if she could see. That's just not possible for a blind person in real life.
I am not exactly sure what difference it makes. Yes the character can see through her bending but it's not exactly like it would matter if the actor could see, partially see or not see at all.
@@uncleirohsteashopA running gag in the cartoons is that people forget that Toph is blind because she doesn't act like a blind person. She can jump, run around, and fight because she can "see" through her earth bending. A real blind person does not have that ability, so how would she do the things Toph did? I've seen a blind person walk around without a walking stick but not as fast as a normal person because they have to feel with their feet and hands where they are going. I have never seen a blind person running around.
@@gemgem-hl7ii can a blind actor not make the same joke as Toph in the cartoon? I don't get what the point of saying that is when you know for that particular instance it makes no difference.
@@uncleirohsteashop the point is not the joke itself but its cause. Why did that joke even exist? Because Toph acted like a seeing person. She could walk around without having to feel what was in front of her with her hands, and she feels with her feet in such a way that she can basically see everything even at a huge distance. A real person's feet can't do that. A seeing person can do something equivalent to that just by seeing, but how would a real blind person do that? How can a blind person see what is in the distance, which is a necessary skill for them to do what Toph (and any other seeing person) does? I'm talking about walking and running around like a seeing person. A blind person can't do that because they don't know what is in front of them unless they feel it first.
You get what I mean? Yes, Toph is blind, but she can basically see through her earth bending, which a normal blind person cannot do. A blind person CANNOT SEE.
@@gemgem-hl7ii bruh it's fake this stuff isn't real so it doesn't matter that much no matter if the person could see or not
