- The GATE sat down with Avatar: The Last Airbender stars Gordon Cormier, Ian Ousley, Kiawentiio, and Dallas Liu to talk about their characters, and what makes the new live action series so special.

SYNOPSIS: Water. Earth. Fire. Air. The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope.
But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young Air Nomad - and the last of his kind - reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar. Alongside his newfound friends Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko (Dallas James Liu) determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way.
AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER is a live-action reimagining of the award-winning and beloved Nickelodeon animated series. Albert Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Jabbar Raisani and Michael Goi are executive producers and directors alongside directors Roseanne Liang (also a co-executive producer) and Jet Wilkinson. Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore serve as executive producers from Rideback.

@@FireStarterAP iirc I think they're referring to one interview where Kiawentiio (Katara) mentioned that they were toning down Sokka's sexism in the live action, but people took that one quote (out of a much longer interview) and blew it out of proportion. It became massive clickbait and the idea that the live action was completely removing Sokka being sexist spread everywhere - people took it as the complete truth and began bashing the live action as a result.
I saw some people saying that Kiawentiio shouldn't have said anything, but like... it was such a small comment? People were saying she should've known how the internet would react but I think that's incredibly unfair to pin on such a young person. People made whole rant videos about the topic, but they didn't even bother to research the actual quote and interview.
@@wingyi999yeah exactly, i too pointed to some negative comments, like they were overreacting and exaggerating that detail 🤦♂️ Did they even watch the og show?! Plus, it's unreleased. And 1:1 adaptation is just dumb, but so far the promos show a faithful version.

3:55 Somehow Gordon was both fearless and nervous at the same time to say "genocide"? But I'm glad he went out and said it. I watched Avatar when I was even younger than Aang and didn't understand how deep it actually was. Only later in life I understood what happened to Aang's people is the most terrible thing someone could do because of the real-life genocide happening.

Kiawentiio too! She was 3 when the original series ended, but she was born after it aired.

Kiawentiio is one of the most talented upcoming actresses out there and it’s sad that “fans” on twitter have already started misconstructing everything she says before she barely made it in the industry.
What is there to misconstrue? She said the original had a lot of ‘iffy’ moments in regard to one of the character tropes that teach ‘sexism = bad.’ There’s only one way to interpret that statement. No matter how right or wrong she is, you should not say anything like that about a critically acclaimed original as an actor in an adaptation of said original, especially since it definitely doesn’t have ‘iffy’ moments besides that one with Iroh in Season 1. She doesn’t deserve any hate for this, and I haven’t seen any personal attacks on her. However, that statement was just dumb, and it’s an honest mistake that she’ll learn from. You can’t always be right and have everything be perfect.

My heart goes out to this cast. It’s so sad that people forget that none of them are super experienced with acting, and have a lot of weight on their shoulders with this show. They all look so tense here. They are just kids. You can tell they are being more careful about what they say, after what happened last time.
Same I hate how tense the atmosphere feels in this interview. The hate is just a very loud minority of people so hopefully it doesn’t get to their heads. Majority of atla fans are supportive, by the time the show comes out everyone will forget and move on

@@ohitsjustme.890 kiawentiio (Katara) briefly mentioned in a previous interview that the writers toned down elements of Sokka’s sexism. Clickbait articles blew what she said out of proportion and big UA-camrs took this as an opportunity to rag on the actors. All over tiktok and twitter there are people complaining about avatar becoming “woke” or whatever
exactly! But I have faith in them. There are so many haters because their negative people. But any person with a right mind can see they can have faith with this cast.
Kiawentiio always looks beautiful in all the outfits I see her in. This outfit is in my top 5 favorite looks of her 🫶🏼🖤😍

With every flaw that this live action has, at the very least, they chose the right casting.. this cast is my favorite part about the show tbh, and the cgi, and effects.. it’s more of the writing that I have so many complaints about.. but this cast is such delight, and I think they did such a good job with their characters.. they’re great actors

They seem way more calculated in their responses than before. A lot of hesitation before answers. I think showrunners told them their last interview didn’t go so well. A lot of negative reactions to how the story is changing.
Rightfully so, they're children and not established as actors. They may even misinterpret the truth. But you'd think the showrunner of the show would be wise enough to tell them that beforehand and also know that himself.

They are, but there is nothing wrong with being nervous to speak. After interview, critics can be mean sometimes, I know what I am talking about i am a future journalist after all. And I would never take something out of a context without thoroughly research, without an understanding what the heck going on. They are doing amazing. And we love them for that💖
The internet hasn’t been kind to them and they are all young and inexperienced. I think as press goes on they’ll become more comfortable.

@@ditto1867she said in an interview that they would be toning down Sokka’s sexism (not eliminating, but toning down) and people took the opportunity to rag on the show saying it would be trash and that woke culture was ruining everything, basically blowing up what she said out of proportion. I’m guessing she received backlash from that.
