I love that you didn’t like reading until your wife talked to you! And now you’re so in love with books!!! lol love watching your channel. I liked Fourth Wing but yes Iron Flame is so hard for me to keep reading! I doubt I will read the next one!
Same! I listened to the audiobook of Fourth Wing in one day, needing to know how it ended. I've barely made it into Iron Flame and it's just not hitting the same
Highly recommend the audiobook of The Book Thief. The narrator is superb. Before him I never liked audiobooks but he changed my mind. It’s definitely a case by case basis.
Love The Name of the Wind. Rothfuss writing is great. Agree first half is slower (like Tom Bombadil in LoTR) but it picks up in second half. Book 2 a quicker pace also. I do like to read slow and soak it all in.
And I feel pretty strongly that Kvothe is suppoooosed to be annoying. I choose to believe it’s so he can learn how not to be. Character development ‘n’ whatnot. Once again, all hopes hang on the mythical Book 3.
Yay! I’m so excited to hear what you think about The Book Thief! I love that big books don’t deter you (in regards to picking up Murakami) IQ84 is suppose to be one of his best ones, but I’ve been puttering around with smaller works of his. The tape of Nanking has been on my TBR for a LONG time, but I know I have to be in a safe mindset to read it.
Nice video. My philosophy is that there are too many books in the world to read ones that you do not enjoy/get something from. I think this is applicable for you and Fourth Wing. On another note, I’m excited to hear your thoughts on The Book Thief. It’s a good one.
I read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon as one of my "easy start" King books and ended up liking it a lot. I agree the ending was anticlimactic, however, i related to the main character having been an independent, tomboyish little girl myself. I appreciated how he was able to write from that perspective so well but i definitely see how it wouldn't stack up against his longer, stronger books. Murakami is one of my favorite authors. I can definitely recommend Kafka on the Shore. 1Q84 is on my tbr for this year
Kafka on the Shore is the first Murakami book I read and is still one of my faves after having read most of his books. Still haven’t read IQ84 (shy away from long books) but may pick up on my next trip to the library.
I’ve got sinking chair syndrome, too. I’ve had to tighten the hydraulic line on the underside of the chair. It helps for a while. I paid way too much for this desk chair to replace it. Yep, I’m trying to save my $$ for books.
Appreciate the honest opinions on popular books. Not everything that's hyped is everyone's cup o' tea. Also enjoy the variety in genres. There are so many books that arent talked about because they aren't sci-fi/fantasy. What is Michael's UA-cam? I have been wanting to branch out to history and it sounds like he has some good recommendations. Love the content man! Thanks for what you do!
Thanks Nick for reminding me of the joy of books again🙏currently reading "Briefly,a delicious life" by Nell Stevens and "The library of the dead" by tl Huchu(4th book comes out later this year)
I also struggled with The Troop. I’m writing a book about Boys Scouts and was disappointed because there are very few books about Boy Scouts from my looking-arounds. Murakami is great! Would also recommend Kafka as a first. It was my first from him. Wind Up Bird Chronicles would also be a great first. His stories are so wonderfully weird and dreamy.
Absolutely with you on name of the wind but I have to say I did finish it and the last 3rd does redeem it somewhat. But not enough for me to care to read the 2nd book...
In case anyone is interested in the meaning of the title for 1Q84, it’s a reference to George Orwell’s dystopian book 1984. The Q is also a homonym for the number nine in Japanese (kyu).
I too found the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon to be pretty boring; at least it's short. My top Murakami pick is, hands down, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. An absolute mind-bender and impossible to pigeon hole. The narrative takes a weird diversion to WW2 that will stay with you forever.
Would be curious to know your thoughts on Mistborn or the Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I’m just getting started with his series as a newbie, but I hear many great things about the author’s series. Seems like something you may enjoy❤
Nick, we share SEVERAL favorite books of all time, 11/22/63 & Pet Sematary both being in my top 3, and 1Q84 rounds out that podium for me! The length is intimidating, but it is a journey that is so weird and well worth it! Can’t recommend Murakami more. After Dark by Murakami is also a short and sweet starter book if you’re looking to get into his writing!
I will try reading the Nan King Massacre. IDK if I will be able to read it but I'll try. I wonder if you'd like The Good Terrorist by Doris Lessing. I had never heard of her even and then a professor of mine recommended it and I was surprised.
I totally agree with The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen and it never did. Felt like it could have just gone in a short story collection.
Murakami is my absolute favorite author of all time. Please just read After Dark as your first book. He does magical surrealism and the human psyche in terms of genre. 👍🏻
I wonder if you would like Lost Gods by Brom. The art in it is beautiful and sinister all at once, plus the story is a compelling account about a journey through purgatory. As far as a popular book I did not like... Six of Crows. I am sorry to offend anyone, but I could not get into it. Love your videos as always! They are so cozy.
Fourth Wing is the only one in this video that I read, it took me like 3 days. I loved that book. Bought the second one as soon as it came out and again, devoured it. Maybe it’s because I am older and it took me back to my school days and there’s dragons, parents who aren’t truthful, who knows? Books are like wine, don’t read it now, but in 10 years you might read it and actually enjoy it. If the first 10 pages of the book don’t grab me, I put it down and move on. Life is too short to read books you aren’t into.
Interesting to hear your perspective on Clown in the Cornfield 2! I read the first one based on your recommendation - it took me a day and a half! Then the next day I went and got the second one and also finished it in about two days! Maybe I enjoyed them so much because I read them consecutively (?) I'm looking forward to the second one!
Glad I’m not the only one that didn’t care for Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I fell asleep multiple times reading that book lol If you’re down for dumb fun books though, I’d recommend David Wong/Jason Pargin. His John Dies At The End series is amazing to me. Many books make me laugh but his have made me laugh out loud multiple times. But you already have a big slate ahead of you so one day, if you ever need just one more book, I recommend one of his.
I was sugested to read The Wind-up Bird Chronicale By Haruki Murakami. I was shocked at how big it was but it sounds great. I also found a very cool cover for it that also convinced me to buy it.
I wish i could give up when i start reading a book LOL, i just end up reading them till the end and regret it always (shadow and bone zzzzz). I read one recently I thought id hate because im not really into sci fi, but Cascade Failure by LM Sagas was a super fun ride and something that i think might have gotten me into the sci fi genre!
Don't mind me being weird and commenting on a video from 3 weeks ago. 😅 I likes Clown in a Cornfield 2 a lot. I think I might have even given it 5 stars? I'd have to check. But, I definitely liked the first one more. I'm interested to read the third one when it comes out. I also enjoyed The Quiet Tenant, but there were definitely parts I wasn't loving. It's my usual genre, though, so that may have played into my acceptance of tropes and stuff. Lol
I felt 100% the same as you did about TGTLTG. King has always been my favorite author, as well, so yeah. I agree completely and for all the reasons you stated. Edit: i DNF'd TNOTW! I tried it about 10 years ago after hearing nothing but praise so i was stoked to read it. It was the first book I ever DNF'd, as well. I really thought I was alone.
1q84: it’s actually a bind up that you have. It’s three books. It has some REALLY interesting parts, and some gross Stephen king pedo parts. I wish it were a movie, since it would have to cut out a lot of the unnecessary stuff and get to the good parts. I’d love to see who they cast as Aomame. Her character was super interesting to me
We have very similar tastes and I'm so glad I found your channel! I've watched many of your videos and get good recommendations (and things to avoid) from you. I did not like Fourth Wing nor The Name of the Wind. I just don't get the hype around either of those.
When >halfway through a book, I HAVE to finish it. I worry that I'd waste my time more dropping a book I put a lot of time in instead of starting another one. But this is just me!
Any idea when you're doing Duma Key? Just finished listening to it few days ago (fifth time, read once, audio the rest cause the narrator just is Edgar) and I just always feel like starting from the beginning right after I finish it. Such good rumination of pain, loss, grief and life, and it's just so so comforting.
It took me a few years and several attempts to finally read Name of the Wind, and I only was able to finish it I feel because I listened to the audiobook, so it was easier to get through the more plodding moments and the narrator is great. I have a lot of issues with the book, including a lot of mixed feelings on Kvothe, but I’m glad I ended up finishing it because some of the sequences I really loved. I do feel like you can tell reading it tho that Rothfuss thinks he’s an A R T I S T, ha.
I see that you have read some Toni Morrison books. I recently read Beloved for my American literature class. I found it a bit confusing because of the fragmented writing, the POV would change without a clear sign which we are so used to nowadays, with the POV of the characters separated in some way. It was a very graphic read but I liked the way Morrison portrayed what people of color struggled with at the time and sacrifices they had to make. I won't go about it too much but I recommend it if you do not mind reading very graphic and violent descriptions! Omg I have to edit and add that I just finished 1Q84 and it was so good?! I read Murakami's short stories for uni as well, and there's something about his writing and the plot line and the characters. Itching to read more of his books.
Popular books I did not like. Twilight. Thought the writing was awful, (kinda liked the movie) A Secret History. Dean Koontz's last book that I can't even remember the title of. And I love Dean Koontz. His Frankenstein series is genius. I will be checking out that Krakauer book , I recently read Into Thin Air and it was riveting.
Hi there, thanks for your videos, which are always fun to watch. I was also disappointed by The Troop. I've been reading horror books recommended by booktubers recently as I hadn't read any horror apart from The Shining 30 years ago, and was disappointed by several, including Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay, The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward, but I thought "Let the right one in" by John Ajvide Lindqvist was excellent, have you read it? (both fans of Steven King and Scandinavian crime novels should love it). Concerning Murakami, I would recommend reading The WInd-Up Bird Chronicles first (certainly before 1Q84).
@@HummingbirdG6843 I heard that supposedly the third book is coming out in November of this year I would advise to wait and see. It would really suck if it never gets finished.
Would you please let me know the screenname of who recommended Born To Be Hanged to you? I've tried looking them up, but haven't been able to find them.
I was excited about The Troop. I had to skip about 2 chapters because the detail during animal abuse. So not necessary. Gore does not bother me either. Liked his writing but it was hard for me to get through.
I watched Flowers of War over a decade ago, about the Raping of Nanking and it was absolutely devastating. Never watching that again, and no thank you to reading about it. Literally painful to learn about. 😢
A book people really like that I never have is The Great Gatsby. I’m not saying the book is bad but it always just felt like high school drama to me and I don’t care for any of that.
I recently started reading. I have finished several Stephen King books and agree that The Girl Who loved Tom Gordon was very disappointing and repetitive. I thought that maybe It was just me who could not get into it. Glad to see it is not just me.
Books are sick but sometimes some books aren’t so sick. Couldn’t agree with you more about Fourth Wing. We aren’t the targeted demographic tho I guess lmao
Also team “enjoyed Fourth Wing and DNF’d Iron Flame” I truly hated it. I got about 50% in and could not deal with the miscommunication one more second. I am of the opinion that if you really enjoy fantasy you won’t like IF. I’m prepared to defend this stance with my life lol.
I didn't like Nick Cutter's books either, BUT i DO enjoy his alter ego, Craig Davidson's books. I recommend "Saturday Night Ghost Club" and "Cataract City" - you might like his other writing rather than the horror he writes under the name Nick Cutter
I'd be interested in hearing some of your favorite horror movies. Maybe you can focus only on book adaptations if you want to keep the channel exclusively for book content! Stephen King has plenty of adaptations worth talking about, for better or worse lol
Here to say that I liked Iron Flame!!! Character is labeled as whiny but like meh its in character and lowkey relatable. BUT maybe I am just insufferably complainy, ha!
I’ve read both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame (my wife did as well) and they both have a very good plot which I really enjoyed. The story was the best part. But some of the characters were a little one dimensional and the author really struggles at describing environment and the landscape. She is a great romance author and the story pulls you in, but I got lost when there was a lack of knowing where things are, what they look like, and the ambiance was lost in intense scenes.
One popular book I just couldn’t get through was Harlem shuffle, I know it’s very well received, but the story just doesn’t do it for me. The writing itself is beautiful but I couldn’t connect with any characters or world building
The Great Gatsby and Catcher in the Rye absolutely hated both characters...... I really loved The Book Thief it was probably one of the closest book to movie adaptations I've ever seen
I'm pretty early in on my reading journey, but the only book I've had to DNF so far is Lincoln in the Bardo by Saunders. Sad because it seemed to be pretty beloved ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ also soooo stoked for Cuckoo !!
I've barely made it into Iron Flame and it's just not hitting the same
Shocked that you didn't love The Name of the Wind, such a good book, soooooo well written
Highly recommend the audiobook of The Book Thief. The narrator is superb. Before him I never liked audiobooks but he changed my mind. It’s definitely a case by case basis.
Your honesty and excitement for books is like breath of fresh air. Keep up the great content. I’ve been loving all your vids! ☺️
The Book Thief is one of my all time favorite books! I would highly recommend the audiobook too, the narrator is fantastic!
You’re videos are so soothing. it has been such a tough week and your videos have lifted me up so much.
Love The Name of the Wind. Rothfuss writing is great. Agree first half is slower (like Tom Bombadil in LoTR) but it picks up in second half. Book 2 a quicker pace also. I do like to read slow and soak it all in.

If your copy of Fourth Wing has dragons on the black page ends (text block) it's worth a bunch. Sold mine for $300!!
You have such a wide range of reading. It's really inspiring to see!
I just saw the trailer for Cuckoo yesterday morning and immediately watched it again with my husband. Can’t wait for that one!

Gabor Mate is amazing. When the Body Says No is a challenging read. All of his books are actually.

Love that you’re up front and honest about the click bait. Lol 😄

My favourite from Murakami is Norwegian Woods, I think you could like it too!
any ideas on how to get out of a reading slump ?
love the video;)
i am in the middle of 1q84 right now. i'm liking it so far

It happened to me the same with The Name Of The Wind, I read it all and tried the second part and still, I could not immerse as I would have liked it.

I DNF'd The Quiet Tenant so fast. I didn't even make it 10% of the way in lol. One popular book I could not stand was Verity.
I also found Kvothe annoying as heck…at first. He was too perfect. Once I got past that, he grew on me and I ended up loving the book.
I was sugested to read The Wind-up Bird Chronicale By Haruki Murakami.
I was shocked at how big it was but it sounds great. I also found a very cool cover for it that also convinced me to buy it.
Oh Lord, the book called Dinotopia! I'd forgotten about it, but I had an illustrated version that was nice.
Yes! If i ever win the lottery you'll know because I'll suddenly be buying every folio society book! 😂
Don't mind me being weird and commenting on a video from 3 weeks ago. 😅
I likes Clown in a Cornfield 2 a lot. I think I might have even given it 5 stars? I'd have to check. But, I definitely liked the first one more. I'm interested to read the third one when it comes out.

Book thief is awesome ! The road is revolutionary. Jack Kerouac ?
On the road by Jack Kerouac, yes! I read it in college and loved it- I don’t know if it would hold up now though.
I felt 100% the same as you did about TGTLTG. King has always been my favorite author, as well, so yeah. I agree completely and for all the reasons you stated. Edit: i DNF'd TNOTW! I wish it were a movie, since it would have to cut out a lot of the unnecessary stuff and get to the good parts. I’d love to see who they cast as Aomame. Her character was super interesting to me
i am also going through the chair sinking problem and i can say that it is pretty annoying
We have very similar tastes and I'm so glad I found your channel! I've watched many of your videos and get good recommendations (and things to avoid) from you. I did not like Fourth Wing nor The Name of the Wind. I just don't get the hype around either of those.
I had my first DNF this year that was The Hunters by David wagg it sounded so good but just could not click with the group and got bored.
Hated Fourth Wing but the book thief and 1Q84 are one of my favorite books

I won't go about it too much but I recommend it if you do not mind reading very graphic and violent descriptions!

One that I can’t get past the 30% mark is Hail Mary by A Weir . I’m just finding it too technical and not about fun .

I didn't like Nick Cutter's books either, BUT i DO enjoy his alter ego, Craig Davidson's books. I recommend "Saturday Night Ghost Club" and "Cataract City" - you might like his other writing rather than the horror he writes under the name Nick Cutter
Idk if anyone has said it yet, but Fourth Wing gets wwaayy better after threshing(when the dragons choose the riders)
I read The Name of the Wind and I liked it, but I can understand what you mean lol
BUT maybe I am just insufferably complainy, ha!
just one question. Why is one of your finger nails red?
I’ve read both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame (my wife did as well) and they both have a very good plot which I really enjoyed. The story was the best part. But some of the characters were a little one dimensional and the author really struggles at describing environment and the landscape. She is a great romance author and the story pulls you in, but I got lost when there was a lack of knowing where things are, what they look like, and the ambiance was lost in intense scenes.
This channel is just dope. Books are fucking sick.
Can you link the guy who does a lot of history and nonfiction?
Waaaaait a second... Did he just tell us that he won the lottery? 🤣
If you see a bookshelf over here........... I'm putting a bookshelf over here... 🤔🤣
Can you link the Michael Kiss book tuber? I can’t find his channel
I believe he’s only on TikTok at Michael Kist
@@booksaresick oh ok thanks
@@booksaresick that sucks was really hoping to find a good non fiction channel
Dude please read unbroken by Laura hillenbrand! It is amazing
