On our farm, we put a stick of straw in the calf's nose. It has about the same effect as putting cold water in the ear, only a bit more intense. It saved a few calf’s lives so far.🤠
Oh, mama! Our first ever cow is a heifer that just calved on her own last week. Only a small Jersey with a Jersey calf. THANK GOODNESS she did it without needing assistance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We just came out one morning and the little fella was bumbling behind her.
We use the jack to lift calf, change ropes onto back legs above knee, then hold jack up straight and lift up calf (short time only)helps get gunk out, also use straw in nose and water in ear.
Actually i have recently read a vet article that's says don't hang a calf over a gate in those calving situations. It says it puts too much pressure on the organs and limits air intake and the only fluid that you get out comes out of the stomach. This article said for best results you lay the calf on its belly with the back legs along it's sides and front legs stretched out front. It elevates the rear end to allow fluid out and let's the lungs expand more to allow air in . Just something I read from a vet.
Yes the latest advice is not to hang calfs upside down, diaphragm and intestines puts pressure on the lungs and leads to further stress. Also don't force alot of cold water into the ears just enough to give that shock. Too much water could lead to ear infections. Adrian your heifers look absolutely in Great healthy condition. A credit to you!! Well done
You and l and the fliud u see might not be clearing the lungs just keep them on the ground dont fold them over gates hang them by the legs but for as little a time as possible
Calves are in great condition joy to watch them. If you put jack ropes above both knees on calf back legs hold jack vertical and jack calf up bit easier on the back. can massage chest then. I will try sitting them down right first like above comment...
Thanks so much for ur video I watched if a few days ago and used the information tonight helping my goat delivery 2 healthy kids. They were fine once born but delivery did not go the plan one was backwards and both were trying to come together. Thanks again the format u give information is easy for anyone to understand.
Your vlogs are a pleasure to watch.I look forward to them each week.I like the fact that you don't pretend to know it all and are still willing to learn.I personally think you are better and more experienced than you give yourself credit for.
Lot’s going on Adrian, great update on this past week with plenty to celebrate, good silage, calving with a wee bit of drama and a good outcome, not to mention the demonstration of reversing with a trailer. All the best and till the next update take care!
I’ve subscribed to your UA-cam channel and I’m from Wexford. You say that you have back problems. I’m a healer and I have videos on UA-cam healing all sorts of problems. Both my wife and I are healers and we don’t charge for healing.
Good to see the calf up and doing very well. Never seen the technique using the leg to simulate the heart, will keep that in mind should I need to. Great video all round :)
When ur pulling out the calf have a bucket of water the minute he's on the ground throw it on him and sometimes it might bring him back to life sometimes it doesn't work but it's worth a try Adrian 👍 into the ear
Another gud video Adrian. I was driving into town the other morning and I was listening to today fm and low and behold there arrives this voice I knew from somewhere the bold Adrian
Another great video Adrian, glad you did a calving video, it's only right the viewers see even the touch-and-go part of it, it is farming in the end, but did bring back some great memories of when I was the herdsman at The Montgomery Herd in Wales, loved calving cows, there is something about it.
What a great video, well worth the wait. Your videography skills are really impressive, you should be well proud of yourself. The Calving was intense I found myself holding my breath waiting to see if the little guy was going to make it, it’s brilliant he did. Thanks for filming the birth it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it 😊. The Silage pit is a thing of beauty and I’m guessing you’ll be getting a lot of interest from the guys or gals on here about it. Well done I can’t wait for the next episode 👏👏👏🏆.
Nice job Adrian, that calf was a hard job for a heifer. I remember visiting a College in Friesland when I was a student in the 80s, they had a rig that measured the amount of leverage that pushing down on the jack created. Pushing it down far exceeded the pull you got from cranking the handle, a real eye opener. They were so concerned by this they even made sure us visitors looked it and take on board the lesson! Really enjoying you videos.👍
I got a helpful tip from my vet, to put short latex gloves on over the arm length ones to get a much better grip. You are such an exemplary example of good practise. Lots of very good advice, I like the bracket on the wall for the calving jack.
Great video Adrian!! There was meant to be an incentive introduced to aid farmers to dispose of pit tyres but unfortunately when farmers wished to avail of this service, it seemed to fall by the waist side. Maybe the company that fitted your case tyres might be able to assist.
Hi Adrian I just seen ya closing the latch on the bucket the latch on them loaders should lock itself when tilted back in to the full that's why the little tab is on the cross section maby you knew that just said I'd say it to ya
Great video adrian, and as usual you show it as it is . It frightening how fast a calfing can go from all good to tragedy. I see your an u tube sensation (according to independent.ie) great that your channel is getting highlighted as its one of the best and that hard for a cork man to say to a cavan man 🤣 . Keep it up you a great advocate for framing in Ireland 👍
Brilliant video as always Adrian. I was on my way to my placement farm where i work Tuesday morning and it was lovely to hear you on Today FM great interview.
We have brid flu staarting to show up in the cattle in the Us and we are hoping that it dose not start toshow up herd in ontario canada.i hope it doesn't show up in Ireland. Have great day and good luck with the calves 😊
Just a few tips on calving. When you first put in your hand, pinch the calf's tongue. It will retract it if still alive. Also, when the head is out, let the tension off the calf until you see it's eyes open. If allows the calf to take a breath as the calf can't breath when you have tension on the jack. Doreen Corridan of Munster AI made this point at a calving demo in Ennis mart a few years back. Would a full calving gate with head gate be of use to you?
Have a calving gate here, just never bothered with it. Guess old habits die hard but I actually love this setup. Cows are usually very quite anyhow. Yes pinching the calf’s tongue works really well also 👍
Excellent, informative video. Any fresh ideas are always welcome. Holding the calf upside down is a favourite but as you say you need the strength of Hercules 💪💪💪💪
Great stuff. .. unreal weather in January! Any chance you would do a video on your thoughts of what way farming will look like in a few years due to the cost of fertiliser and meal this year
Great video Adrian, I do hang calves upside-down, only shook one, one's calved backwards, have a Parkside hoist on a frame over head, it's handy if doin a c-section for lifting calf out, you could put ropes on back legs and use calving jack. Great to see silage cover was a great result. Turned out a good job. Great interview on Today FM during the week. 👍
Great video Adrian, amazing how these simple tips and tricks work, one thing I have learned calving cows, is to remain calm. Its easy to get wound up with cows calving and do more harm than good, you show this calmness when the pressure is on and its great to watch. Thanks for what your showing here, keep up the great work. Maybe a radio career on Today FM might be in the works 😀
Ya my dad would of been in there with a panic and rush about him. In fairness when i was younger I did the same. Then I spent a few months working on a really good farm and was thought never to do that, you just can’t beat getting experiences like that. Thanks Martin
Great video Adrian just a little tip I do use When a calf is getting hard to breathe after birth is get clean steam of straw and push it up the calf’s nostril and shake it around I find it helps to get the calf to draw it’s breath love the videos keep them coming from paul delaney
Good save Adrian! When a newly born calf is lying on his side he can only inflate one lung ! I do sit them up like a frog 🐸 pull one back leg each side and 2 front leg turned under it's chest! It can sit up straight and inflate both lung's. Mighty job on a touch and go calf. Keep up the great video!
I normally fold there two front legs under them and prop them up against a wall. It was just easier to work on him lying flat out this time, but your dead right is does help inflate both lungs. Thanks Keith 👍
That calf I thought he wouldn't do first.. By god at the end of the film.. He was looking well.. Great watching.. You have so much experience with cattle. It shows.. You are running some ship there.. Well done..
Have three buckets of water handy. One tipped on head of calf really shocks them into breathing (if you fell into a freezing river you'd gasp for breath) - Dr Jan Pol swears by it. The other two for the cow to drink to fill her up after calving - Tom Pemberton does this every time! Another great vid, many thanks!
Yes I always give at least 2 buckets of Luke warm water to cows as soon as they calve, great thing to do. Yes cold bucket over the calf does work but it can delay a heifer especially to lick it afterwards. Some people add salt on the calf’s back afterwards to encourage her again
Another great enjoyable Sunday video to watch and relate to real life with some calvings we've had with our suckler cows . All down to earth content and probally one of my favourite UA-camrs to sit back and watch and see you progress throughout the farming year. Them heifers look absolutely beautiful condition aswell Adrian 😍 . You should be proud of yourself for the stock you produce and bring out . Keep up the great work ! 😊😃👍
In ag school we were told not to lift the calf too hard on the organs, just to put on the recovery position, I seen the clip on UA-cam u on about with the hoist can't remember where it's so long, smashing calf 👍
As long as you don’t do it for to long you should be ok, problem is that some calves might be too heavy for one man and with that there lifted wrongly. it’s a life or death situation and has saved numerous calves for us. Ya just have to be careful. The recovery position does work well but if there a lot of fluid it ingested you may have to adapt to the other.
Good job Adrian. That was a touch and go moment. Thank god everything worked out well. We would normally hang a calf on a gate if the need arose. Most of the time it works
I may have missed this but how many head of cows do you milk also how many heifers do you introduce each yr. it’s great to watch you at work learn a lot and remember so much.
Great video as always Adrian, thanks very much for sharing. Silage looks savage, great job on the pit. 👍🏼 Great effort to revive that Angus, super stuff. Seen them hung over gates before,it certainly helps to move to mucus out of the air ways.
Was looking through the comments there was a lot of good tips fair play to everyone that shared the only thing that I can share is I was showed that after u get the shoulders out is to stop and let the cow/heifer push that helps push the fluid out of the lungs. Get pit of silage not easy always getting it like that lol
Great video Adrian. Last year I used a product called calf saver it stimulates the calf to breathe and to get up and suck the cow i found it good if there was a big calf and he would be under pressure it would bring the calf around. And the water in the ear is a great job. I didn't start the calveing season yet it won't be long now. The oil diesel mix is a great job for shining something up. 👍
Turn the calving jack upsidedown to lift the back legs of the calf. For the heifers if u run them into the parlour and give them meal in the troughs it helps get them used to it
The old easy calving Angus in a heifer. Use them myself, you think to yourself sure its only an Angus she'll pop it out. They're grand until you get a big one then you might as well be pulling a Charlois, can be so difficult. Some bull calf, great back on him! Brilliant video Adrian showing the more stressful occurrences in farming. Great to see a positive outcome.
Adrian, I came across your Chanel by chance and I am glad I did. Your video content and explanation of what is going on is excellent. It reminds me of my days at agricultural college, thank you !!
Hi Adrian, great video. What weight do you mate those heifers at? They are in super condition at calving time. Just interested in how you manage them up to this point.
Hi Adrian, we use ecostyle melissengeist nose spray, it provokes the breathing, works well. when there is too mutch fluid in the longs/throat first haging the calf upside down.
Another great video Adrian. Great healthy looking calfs. Glad to see the little critter made it through hes a fine little fella. That man from sligo will do very well with him and his buddies. Just thinking about your tyres, years ago we bolted ours together in a line and lifted them on and off the pit with the forks i know your running on a nee system now but hows about using them for that shed roof of your dads that your afraid will blow in the wind? I think the weights will work in your favour!. BTW i seen in yer last video the faries turned down the bowl of the mixer in the shed 😜😜😜. Buachaill dana 🤣🤣🤣
Wee tip for ya Adrian, when taking the bags off the pit put the pallet forks on and put the pallet up, that way you only have to handball the bags once. Keep up the good work love the channel 👏
On our farm, we put a stick of straw in the calf's nose. It has about the same effect as putting cold water in the ear, only a bit more intense. It saved a few calf’s lives so far.🤠

That pit silage has worked out well Adrian your pit face is a credit to you 👍
Without a doubt the best and most informative farming Chanel on UA-cam, well done Adrian 👍
I very much doubt that but thanks mate I appreciate ur enjoying it. 👍
Such a cool customer under pressure Adrian during the calving. Always good to see how other farmers do it
Brilliant UA-cam episode Adrian well done👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✨✨
Great job calving the heifer 👍silage looks really great 🤩

Hi we use an old liner into the calf’s mouth it helps keep the airway open
It is very good if its head is swollen
Best wishes from Kerry
Everything as cool an calm as Frank Spencer in the operating threatre .
Was watching a documentary on him last night, frank would be some man at the job 🙈🙈🤣
Best video yet well done 👏
Your vlogs are a pleasure to watch.I look forward to them each week.I like the fact that you don't pretend to know it all and are still willing to learn.I personally think you are better and more experienced than you give yourself credit for.
Every days a learning day, myself included. Learnt a lot in the last two years from our fans in fairness. Thanks Greg
Nice one Adrian, great result, and healthy calf, happy days, keep at her Lad!
Great video Adrian nice looking calf keep up the good work 👍👍🇬🇧🏴👌
Thank you for sharing the heifer calving and showing that not all calving is straightforward and sometimes calves have to be revived.Good work.🐄👍
Your such a caring farmer. The cows and calves are lucky to have you
Lovely silage ,good bit of luck with calf. Best of luck getting rid of tyres it's a disaster getting them recycled
Sorry for your loss
What do you mean sorry for your loss What loss?
Mistake was texting someone else sorry
Great job Adrian real nice calf.
Savage video. Best looked after cattle in Ireland!
Great work Adrian 👏

I always use fairy liquid not a fan of the rest when I go for the jack makes a big difference pick up the idea from my vet
Congratulations on saving the calf.
You should be put forward for a medal as your farming practices are first class.
Up Cavan
Thanks Ciaran, lots of men would be in front of me on that one. 👍

I seen a fella walking up through Magherafelt (Co. Derry) this week with an ifarm wefarm jacket. He was rocking it well!
I got a helpful tip from my vet, to put short latex gloves on over the arm length ones to get a much better grip. You are such an exemplary example of good practise. Lots of very good advice, I like the bracket on the wall for the calving jack.
Outstanding video. True farming at its best 👍🏻
A lovely batch of heifers hope they go well for you
Cheers Christy, there doing very well so fare
Loved the video Adrian... Great content Best wishes with the rest of your calving👍
Yet again Adrian ur a star ur attention to your animals second t none good take care
Well done that man ,your a credit to farming.
Great to see the heifer calving and your experience saved the calve and you don’t get that from a book good luck with all the calves
Great video Adrian!! There was meant to be an incentive introduced to aid farmers to dispose of pit tyres but unfortunately when farmers wished to avail of this service, it seemed to fall by the waist side. Maybe the company that fitted your case tyres might be able to assist.

Already knew about rubbing, water and finger in the nose but that front leg motion was new to me 👍
Brilliant video as always Adrian. I was on my way to my placement farm where i work Tuesday morning and it was lovely to hear you on Today FM great interview.
Thanks Louise 👍

Great video again, well done on saving that calf's life, he's a good one
Happy Sunday Adrian, Another great video.
Best wishes to you all from North Wales 🏴
Great video I love how mellow your animals are so easy to work with and great technique used on calve the bunker Haylage looks good
Hello from Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Canada. Thanks for sharing your great video’s please keep them coming
Adrian you are brilliant at reversing a trailer
This is a real farming video!!

Great stuff. .. unreal weather in January! Any chance you would do a video on your thoughts of what way farming will look like in a few years due to the cost of fertiliser and meal this year
Another fantastic video Adrian … well done with that getting that calf back from the brink.
Great video, not too man farmers on here showing a cow calfing 👌🏻 and nice interview on Today FM 😀
Good one I was tought was to pull a blade of straw up the calf's noise to get it to sneeze that gets them going some times brings the crap out
Adrian, try ringing/emailing a few horse riding schools/livery yards.. they LOVE tires for jumps!! They'd probably rip ur arm off for some freebies!
Excellent trailer banking. Practice makes perfect. Every time I view a delivery I learn something different. Thank you for sharing. 🐄🐄
To clear the airways we get a bit of straw and stick it up the nostrils just to make it easier from them to take those first few breaths of air
Nice to see you got that calf out ok.
I used to do the same with lambs, it made them sneeze and clear any fluid from their airways and usually got them breathing straight away.
Very good Adrian, top class 👏. Another way to hang a calf is put the ropes on its back legs and use the jack to jack it up backwards, if you get me.
Yes I do surely, have done that myself too Gerry 👍
Just wondering how long after the calf is born do separate her from the cow
Another great enjoyable Sunday video to watch and relate to real life with some calvings we've had with our suckler cows . All down to earth content and probally one of my favourite UA-camrs to sit back and watch and see you progress throughout the farming year. Thanks George 👍
Great video Adrian them heifers are shining
Good job Adrian. That was a touch and go moment. Thank god everything worked out well. We would normally hang a calf on a gate if the need arose. Most of the time it works
Not great for the discs in your back long term!
You are good at reversing. You must be using wing mirrors when reversing a trailer. I do.
Great video Adrian very educational never saw the front leg technique before... .thanks for sharing
I may have missed this but how many head of cows do you milk also how many heifers do you introduce each yr. it’s great to watch you at work learn a lot and remember so much.
Great video as always Adrian, thanks very much for sharing. Silage looks savage, great job on the pit. 👍🏼
Great effort to revive that Angus, super stuff. Seen them hung over gates before,it certainly helps to move to mucus out of the air ways.
Another wee trick I'd use is poke some straw into the calf's nose, just to provoke a sneeze to help clear its nasal passage.
Great video
Was looking through the comments there was a lot of good tips fair play to everyone that shared the only thing that I can share is I was showed that after u get the shoulders out is to stop and let the cow/heifer push that helps push the fluid out of the lungs. Excellent video Adrian. Really informative and honest.
Great video Adrian. And the water in the ear is a great job. I didn't start the calveing season yet it won't be long now. The oil diesel mix is a great job for shining something up. 👍
Ya I know a few people that use that Calf Starter, seems to be fairly good. Best of luck with your upcoming season Bertie
Thanks Adrian. Keep up the good work 👍
Turn the calving jack upsidedown to lift the back legs of the calf. For the heifers if u run them into the parlour and give them meal in the troughs it helps get them used to it

Brilliant video Adrian showing the more stressful occurrences in farming. Great to see a positive outcome.
Ya there definitely a lot bigger the year, that one in particular. Thanks Conor
Adrian, I came across your Chanel by chance and I am glad I did. Your video content and explanation of what is going on is excellent. It reminds me of my days at agricultural college, thank you !!
Great heifers
Do one wheel block first an one silver then put them on the quad then see what colour you like
brill thk you great outcome
Ifarm Wefarm,
With the broken U joint on that bar, is that how the cow cut her back on the broken bolts
Hi Adrian, great video. What weight do you mate those heifers at? They are in super condition at calving time. Just interested in how you manage them up to this point.
Savage farm Adrian nice and neat
Hi Adrian, we use ecostyle melissengeist nose spray, it provokes the breathing, works well. when there is too mutch fluid in the longs/throat first haging the calf upside down.

Smashing looking heifers..... in great condition
