I am black American- I have spoken Spanish all my life. My father spoke to us in Spanish when we were children- You are right! It totally confuses people. My abuelita told me once, "They are just jealous because you can do something they did not think you could do."

As a Spanish speaker, if a person has a perfect accent of a Spanish dialect like you, I would probably believe at first the person has grow up in a Spanish speaking country that matches the accent, or they have family from that country and have learnt the language through them. Honestly, I would get surprised if the person is not native and simply perfectioned so much the skill that sounds native. It's always surprising when someone talks very well a language it's not their own.
I'm trying to tell ppl this just because they speak Spanish ppl can still tell where you learned it at they will know you ain't authentic

It happens to me too... I'm Colombian living in my country and when a foreign person hears me talk they think I'm from USA 😅. I just happen to have a good American accent

@@testingsomething5280 It sounds like German or French. Spanish have to sounds for le letter "r": Like in "Pero" and like in "perro".
Most foreigners have problems to pronounce the second one and it may sounds like a German R if you don't master it.
@@dantedante839 I was going to make her listen to Dustin Luke too but she seemed very busy so I just chose Rickie. I knew Dustin's Spanish was good, but I could still hear some tiny traces of his American accent. With Rickie I hear no accent EVER, and it just made me that more curious. The first time I clicked on one of his videos I definately thought he sounded native, but I'm not native myself so I HAD TO ask, because I've never heard a non native speak it so well, at least not to my hearing capabilities. I know these two speak with different accents too and having a Cuban decide who sounds native isn't exactly ideal, but close enough! She is from the Caribbean!

Leigha Long practice lots of practice it’s a little difficult but not impossible, watch Spanish tv when ever possible

I met a Polish girl who speaks Spanish with a Argentinian accent. She's so clear and fluent. I'm Peruvian and a proficient English speaker. We were in awe because we didn't expect the other to be proficient in those languages we immediately had a crush.

I run into a lot of those "rude Spanish-speakers until they realize you speak their language then they do a 180 and are super friendly to you" Spanish-speakers.
In general I'm pretty sure latinos get worse treatment for speaking Spanish in public. Most people won't treat you differently, and if they do, it's probably because it's exciting to find someone who speaks your language in a foreign country. At the very least you appreciate seeing people from developed countries learn your language, it's flattering to an extent.

You are talking as if Spanish is some kind of obscure and insignificant dialect and not one of the most important, spoken and beautiful languages in the world. Spanish is a legitimate son of Latin, the language of the Roman Empire, the greatest empire in the history of humanity. Just to illustrate you about the importance of the Spanish language, the second book most read in the world, just below the bible, is "El Quijote", written in Spanish. A big part of the best literature in the history of humanity is written in Spanish, not to mention all the music and cultural expressions written as well in Spanish.
Who cares if people from "developed" countries (that descend from barbarians and speak barbarian) learn or not Spanish? I certainly do not.

Es que para nosotros es raro pensar que alguien no originario de un lugar que hable español quiera siquiera aprenderlo xD, nos es dificil verle el mérito. No es por menospreciarnos a nosotros mismos ni a nuestro idioma, solo es esa extrañeza de no saber porqué alguien que según nuestra cultura estará bien en un mundo globalizado por saber inglés (que es el idioma que más quisieran/se les pide dominar a los hispanohablantes, para tener buenas oportunidades) pensaría en aprender español. Es algo extraño, pero es más que nada una diferencia de perspectivas la que nos hace creer que el español no es útil como idioma para aprender.

I dated a Polish man for 3.5 years. I couldnt grasp the language for my life. He also had to translate Russian for me when I needed it. Btw Im Nigerian too.

Se aprecia el esfuerzo cada vez que un extranjero intenta hablar español, no se en el resto de Latinoamérica o España, pero acá en México si notamos que tienes la decencia de tratar de hablar nuestro idioma, pero te cuesta, nos reímos y te hablamos inglés, to be friendly

@@interestingthings8598 I went to the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City. I had been thinking of Spain, but then I met a Mexican band that had moved to Winnipeg and started hanging out with them. A couple of them had been to the Conservatorio, and the lead singer’s mother ran a boarding house that was just twenty minutes walk from it. So it all just sort of fell into my lap!

How many languages do the natives have
Alot of these comments are giving me life. One thing I noticed is that as we improve we are often shocking people with something that they may have not ever believed was possible, so no matter what the reaction that's awesome. I've lived every single part of the skit he's saying learning Spanish in the us as a black person. It gets tough but know the more ppl you talk to the more supporters you'll have! Shout out to all of you that never quit!

Brooo I swear this is all true. People will be shocked at me speaking Spanish and act like I'm basically family. They'll ask me if I'm Dominican, Cuban, or Puerto Rican or if my parents are. I'll just tell them I'm black and my family is from here, the US. They'll then ask me why I wanted to learn it saying I'm very smart. I'm asked all this everytime I go to work. It makes me want to be more fluent and have many conversations. You were spot on with these types of people dude 😂
My ex boyfriends mom told me I looked like one of her sisters and asked if I was Mexican. I have a Mexican accent when I speak Spanish tho. One time my great grandmother said I was Mexican I wasn't sure to believe her because it was so random
You’ll just tell them your black? You mean you’ll just tell them your American black. You can be Puerto Rican black, Cuban black, and Dominican black (especially Dominican, they’re mostly black). That I also don’t understand. Being Cuban, Puerto Rican or Dominican doesn’t automatically erase someone’s African black roots. Like when you see Black Dominicans go like « nah I’m ain’t Moreno, I’m Dominican ».
sorry I didn't clarify on what I specifically say to them. I tell them I'm "afro americano" because I don't really like saying negro since there are people within latin america as well as Europe who are black/ Moreno too. Plus I feel like saying black is more of an american English thing. I usually only say black when I'm around people I know. Otherwise I'll say African American since I've come across people who only use that instead of black whether they're African American or not.
It's great to see someone be so interested in learning Spanish so fluently without having any Spanish roots at all.. Which why it actually makes many of us curious about why that person choose to learn it to begin with. At they same time it makes many of us proud that they're so interested in our beautiful language & to speak it so well

My oldest daughter had a bunch of Mexican classmates and I remember some of them looking at me like I had two heads. “You speak Spanish?!” But in our area I don’t see many black Latinos either, so I understand why the child was surprised lol. They’re used to seeing their parents and peers that look like them.
I remember when I first started seeing Telemundo and I was confused by all these white people on the tv. 😆 I was used to seeing folks with more color.

Im sorry let me clarify my family are Generations of native Americans and a Spaniard grandfather who passed away before my birth, I'm NOT indian from the country of india, all my grandma's family are from north american INDENGENOUS tribes all from recognized tribes of USA. So I guess I look Mexican or Hispanic, because of my grandfather side of the family.. but I do consider Mexicans a next of kin, like you can say a distant cousin or relative.

But we do have different histories.. my people were forced off our land by President Andrew Jackson on trail of tears and killed on our way to the rezs.. I don't know how Mexico treats it's full blooded indengenous natives? But I do know what happened to my people here in the united states..Anyways I'm here trying to learn the Spanish language ...

As a Spanish person when I find out people that aren’t Spanish-speaking especially so well like yourself I take it as a compliment one that you would take the time to learn my language and to just amazing because you probably learned it at a much later age than I did which creates its obstacles and difficulties so I do admire and appreciate it so much

I relate to this heavily. I was born in the UK but My mother's side of the family is from Equatorial Guinea, so we're black and we all speak spanish and it really confuses people.

Como una Puertoriqueña cada vez que escucho a un "gringo" hablando en español me da un orgullo inmenso ya que se que el español por mas bello que es, es un poco dificil. ¡Hasta a mi me da problemas y yo llevo hablandolo toda mi vida!
A heads up: going forward once a native or non-native Spanish speaker discovers that you speak Spanish fluently, particularly at this high level, you will be indelibly classified as someone by birth or relatives as someone of Spanish ancestry.

I've got kind of a unique situation because I kind of mix all the Spanish accents and sounds (I pronounce the LL and Y different ways, some times like a "J" and sometimes like a "SH", and sometimes I pronounce the Z like the Spaniards do) and mix accents and slang, so people always guess I'm from different places. I've people have guessed that I'm Colombian, Spanish, Cuban, Mexican, Argentinian, Brazilian, Chilean, Puerto Rican. And but then I tell them I'm from the US and it makes sense to them that my accent and sounds are mixed.
Jskdkdjd that's funny and relatable, it's happened to me as well with english bc I always mix british and american words. We need help

Yeah, it happens with me too as a result of being exposed to different accents. I generally try to keep in mind differences between certain words based on who I’m speaking with, but accent-wise I prefer to lean toward a more Caribbean accent just because I like the way it sounds
How do you make a difference between LL and Y in Spanish? They both sound the exact same! I'm from Spain and never heard of such differenciaton
@@elizabethreynoso4748 Honestly, its fun mixing accents and it helps me write (for example I never mix up my Z and S when writing in Spanish, something that I've seen natives do). Also, some people like hearing certain accents and I change and people often laugh of find it funny. Furthermore, some accents are easier to pronounces certain words/sounds ("ballena" for example is much easier for me to pronounce with the Argentinian "SH" LL sound, because we don't have that many vowels in a row. Also, it's just fun sometimes, just using different slang from different countries. I love saying things like "no manches tio!" or "chèvre" or "vale" or "coñazo" "que lo que" "ya tu sabes" and don't want to be limited to one accent/way of speaking . Lastly, it's just fun for me! So thank you for the suggestion, but I'm never going to limit myself to one way of speaking Spanish.

I felt that Mr Rude one so much! I heard this Angolan guy speaking portuguese once and he thought I was staring at him so he started squaring up to me. As soon as I spoke Portuguese back to him however his attitude completely changed and he offered me a beer. Crazy how different people act depending on whether you know their language or not.
I saw a saying that relates to that. If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. I don't think it works on Americans though lol

For us native speakers the shock comes because the reality is that it is extremely rare to see someone learn Spanish as a second language to the point where the can carry a conversation, much less with an accent. To be honest a lot of second generation speakers like myself can't even carry a completely Spanish conversation (no Spanglish).
well, there are lots of afrocaribbean and asian people in latinoamerica nowadays. There were a lot of movilization of the caribbean island to mainland during the beginning of the last century, so latinos are already acquainted with that kind of people, so it's not weird to listen them speaking spanish. (it's over 100 years, so...). During the same last century, lots of chinese people emigrated to latinoamerica too; in my country, a lot of them worked in the development and construction of the railway. Nowadays, there are a lot of china towns in latinoamerica, and a lot of things going on with the relationships between china and latinoamerica governments. (and yeap, that involves a lot more of chinese folks emigration to latinoamerica). on the other hand, there are a lot of Indian people, and people from SEA countries (example: Philippines) that looks alike the kind of latino who has native parents (Indigenous)

what happened to me on time was that me and my friend were standing on the London bridge waiting to see some show. now came a Hispanic group thinking they can just stand before us. we were like with everybody go to the back, we were standing here first. one woman comes next with the we dont understand you in spanish. We were like; tienes que ir atras, estabamos parados aqui primero. they were shocked that we could speak spanish. i laughed so hard that day.
I've run into ALL of these people. Since I've only been learning Spanish for like 3-4 years, I'm not as fluent as a native, and I be getting HELLA confused when a native Spanish speaker speaks to me super fast, but at the same time, I lowkey be getting tight when they stop talking to me in Spanish and only speak English to me.

This is so accurate... It's crazy. I've experienced pretty much most of these situations. I'm Mexican but I'm very light skinned with blue eyes and people are always assuming I'm from mennonite decent, which I am not. I guess favorite experience of mine was when a Caucasian girl asked me if my (low income) parents hired me a tutor to learn Spanish 😂 I still laugh to this day. I love that you're a fluent Spanish speaker and you've learned to appreciate the culture, thank you 🙏

Eric Sanjuan it’s kind a mix of both. 3:10 is definitely Puerto Rican influenced. The Taxi/Uber conversation sounds very Dominican. I’m guessing my boy Rickie has spent some time in the NE, that’s the only part of the country you can get consistent exposure to both accents simultaneously lol

English is my fourth language, Spanish is slowly becoming my fifth language. I’ve been learning languages because when travelling, I like speaking with people in their own language. It really opens up their hearts and minds.
I spent about a month on a roadtrip in Peru, and I could just tell how nicer people became when they realized I could speak their language. I saw and learned more about their country and its people than what I would have if I just spoke English. I even tried to learn Quechua (emphasis on “tried” 😁), just so I could speak with those who couldn’t speak Spanish or English.
Never ever was someone rude to me for speaking in their language to them. The reaction was almost always a big smile on their face. Sometimes it was caused by me making a grammar mistake, sometimes by them not expecting me speaking their language, sometimes by their appreciation for me trying to speak their language. But it almost always was a big smile 😀 People don’t usually see that when a local language is English, because nowadays everyone kind of expects you speaking English. But go anywhere else in the world and speak their language, or let’s say, start speaking Mandarin to a Chinese person living/visiting an English speaking country, and you’ll get from them a big smile and an open heart and mind. I love that feeling!
