Carlos Martinez Same. I understand it (can read & write it), but I always answer back in English. I feel dumb because even when I try to speak it, it comes out “Spanglish” (since I’m not completely fluent) and I just give up.

Here's some tips I used to learn Brazilian Portuguese
    -Mango Languages app
-I wrote any sentence, on index cards, I could think of that would be useful in Portuguese and read out loud everything I wrote
-Words that I didn't quite understand, i wrote out on index cards the word and wrote several sentences using that word in the past present and future form and read out everything out loud
-I have index cards pinned and labeled to several items in my apartment(ex:door, and I wrote several sentences with the word door) and read everything out loud
-And once I became more conversational, I started narrating my life in Brazilian Portuguese
-What ends up happening by writing down your language, you're actually learning way more than they realize..you're learning to write, by writing down these sentences, you're learning several words at one time, you're learning verbs in different tenses and speaking out the sentences.
And Tandem is a really good app to put you in communication with natives

I am a professor of Spanish and shared this with my students. Thanks so much for this great video. I am fluent in the language and lived in Spain for many years and did my graduate studies in Spanish. I shared this with my students because when I started learning Spanish (at age 11), I remember that I implemented a lot of these strategies (back when there was no internet too). I agree with you that now there is no reason why people need to go to another country to immerse themselves. The United States has the second largest Spanish speaking population in the world. :)

It’s comical though. I still go through all that stuff from that other video on how black guys get treated when they find out you speak Spanish. So on point! Aquí tienes un follower nuevo!

I think it may be worth mentioning also that when watching TV in Spanish, if someone puts on the subtitles they too should be in Spanish.
Watching something in Spanish with English subtitles is never going to be helpful to someone learning. But Spanish programmes with Spanish subtitles can rapidly increase the speed of learning if someone really puts in the effort

I am super impressed with you! I love your tips about changing your devices to Spanish, watching movies in Spanish, and reading books in Spanish. Wherever you live in the U.S., your local library likely has a lot of these resources for free. I love your ideas about how to connect to native speakers and do language exchanges. This is probably a little too immersive for me with grad school coming up, but I may try to teach myself this way after I finish grad school. Thanks so much for the tips!

I love English. Ever since I was 16 I started Googling every single thing in English, and honestly, I still do it to this day; youtube videos, research on the internet, etc.
When it comes to shows or movies. The first time I watch them I do it for entertainment, then I watch them a second time for learning purposes without the hype. That way I can focus on learning instead of getting immersed in the show.
Also, the way I learn something new that I don't understand is "context> definition/images> translation". It works like magic. That way I train myself to understand the context first, and sometimes I can make a pretty accurate guess of the meaning of something that I've never heard before. However, this works best depending on your level.
I also recommend handwriting, not typing, HANDWRITING. Writing words and phrases helps our brain retain information. Your memory and skill in your target language will slowly deteriorate (just in little details) if you just "type" all the time. I know cause it has happened to me with English.

I don’t know why it’s harder for me to learn Spanish than it is when I learned Korean 😭. It’s weird because Spanish should be easier for me since I speak Tagalog. My husband is Mexican and speaks fluent Spanish, along with his family. I recently got to meet a part of his family and a lot of them don’t speak English and I want to be able to speak with them or understand them, laugh with them and etc. After that, I’ve been feeling motivated to learn Spanish more. I’ve studied 2 years of Spanish in high school and then 1 semester class of Spanish in college but I forgot a lot tbh. Even English is lowkey complicated for me and that’s my first language ☠️ LOL Anyways, I can understand a bit, but I can’t speak very good, like I understand basic stuff. I just don’t know where to starttt... I also feel discouraged sometimes when I try to speak Spanish because I’m embarrassed I don’t sound good or sound stupid. I have social anxiety so it’s alotttt harder for me to not think that people aren’t making fun of me.

Follow this syllabus. It's great. And don't be afraid of mistakes. You have to realize that no one is perfect at spanish. Even native speakers make mistakes. It's ok as long as you are progressing.

Make the mistakes Ming. Practice with your husband. When your confidence and bilingual skills pick up then speak with people from other Latin American countries. You'll see the differences in one country's accent, slang and pronunciations versus another person who's from somewhere else. Buena suerte.

Hi👋I'm a Spanish native speaker and I make a lot of mistakes everyday... Sometimes anxiety makes me think that even speaking my native language I'm not good enough 😂😂. Keep in check your thoughts related to anxiety!! How? Look for CBT it helps so much with our distorted automatic thoughts.
If you start managing your anxiety slowly you will increase your confidence making mistakes and then start seeing them as necessary for learning and not a prove of failure.
      You got it 😊😊

Sus W, hello there... well I have two iPhones, both are same model but different year, I bought one as brand new and the other was a used one. I mirrored the second one to the original and (after fixing very few details) ended up with to identical smartphones. Although I do this way for convenience (so I can use one while the other is charging and also when getting out I carry the used one) I think you can do the same but with one in Spanish and the other in English... or you might devote one to only Spanish (I mean everything) and the other to just English... anyway some Apps will be the same in both devices like Photos.
Nota.- Ojo el teléfono que llevo a la calle no tiene instalada la aplicación del banco... no sé si esto servirá de mucho pero psicológicamente me ayuda.
Nota.- El inglés es mi segunda lengua.

I'm from New York City (born and raised; no longer living there, though) and you speak Spanish with a Caribbean accent; you definitely have the rhythm of those from the Spanish-speaking Carribbean. I can tell 'cause I grew up around a lot of PRs, and had close friends who were Cuban, and knew a few Dominicans. I do not speak Spanish, but I can tell the accents of those who speak it from different countries.
Anyhoo, I'm commenting, because I've watched a few of your videos [today], and pretty much all of your advice in regard to learning Spanish can be applied to learning other languages, too.

¡Excelente!
