As a gringo sitting at a restaurant in Barcelona, this is exactly what I’ve been struggling with feeling like I’ve forgotten all the Spanish I have learned. It’s so easy for me to read and decipher text but understanding someone speaking quickly is really frustrating because I feel disrespectful not understanding them when I truly am trying. Usually it’s just one word that I don’t understand and then I get thrown off listening to the rest. By the time I’ve processed it the person had already spoken 10 more words, which even if I knew I didn’t catch because I was stuck on that first confusing word. Sometime The way that I mumble in English often.... I’m sure Spanish speakers would have the same difficulties hearing me. Thanks for the renewed confidence in learning, glad to know someone else has been challenged by this as well.

Don't stress your mind, I'm a spanish native speaker and even for us it could be difficult to understand sometimes, spanish speakers speak faster than english speakers, sometimes we tend to ignore parts of the speech when we consider someone has a bad pronunciation but we take the last words as reference, other thing could be that spanish language has a rhythm that you have to get used to, listen to the vowels carefully, not to the consonants. watch soaps operas, they exaggerate the pronunciation of the vowels.
by the way,,, I'm a english learner from mexico, If someone wants to practise with a native, I'm charmed to help.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm sure the others will really appreciate it! And your English is awesome! Keep it up! Do you want me to announce that you are available to practice with others on one of my videos?

2 things: UA-cam allows you to play videos at faster and slower speeds. Slow those speakers down and then build back up to "regular speed". As for subtitles, I only use Spanish subtitles, never the English. It can also help to watch something in Spanish you already know very well. Great videos.

Been a Spanish speaker for most of my adult life. I am half Cuban and half Jamaican. However, like you, I had to learn Spanish from scratch. I would describe myself as fairly proficient, meaning I’m about 75% versed in the language, and can easily strike up a conversation with most native Spanish speakers and hold my own. But I will confess that my ears could do with some more training. I really appreciate what you’re doing and the humorous way n which you do it. I can relate to your material, and find it very helpful. If I were as clever as you I’d probably be doing the same thing. 😂 Keep it coming, you’ve found a very nice nitch.

I've been taking up Spanish classes since high-school and im getting my BA degree with a minor in Spanish. Its always been so hard for me to understand Spanish speakers when they speak so fast or Spanish singers who sing so fast and it is important to keep in mind that each Spanish speaking country has their own slang and different dialogoue and words that they use. I've been learning Spanish for 13 years and it makes me sad that I still have trouble understanding when it comes to listening to someone speak Spanish so fast and that im not fluent. I know how to read and write most Spanish. But listening and understanding and speaking it very fast are still my challenges but im just gonna apply myself much more and see where it takes me.

Lewis CC1 Baarnes. That is a good way to figure out what is being said. The only problem is that it doesn't help you to train your ear for natives that go 100 words per millisecond lol. but I did think about mentioning that in my video at first. I never tried it though because I wanted the full speed.

It's nice if you can understand what the guy might be singing about but I could also say that as a native English speaker it can be very difficult to pick up on what is being said eveb in English speaking music, especially when the lyrics are uber fast. Personally I think music is a wonderful way to learn vocabulary and it can really help to feel connected to the language. However, if you really want to train your ear to the spoken language, aside from conversing with speakers of your desired language, the radio is a fantastic method - you are forced to really tune in to what is being discussed whilst also learning vocabulary across a diversity of subject matter. You also learn how people communicate with each other, especially if there is a debate going on. This is going to be very useful in its application in real world situations

Whenever you don't understand a language, it always sounds fast. Spanish seems fast, because of the frequency of consonants coming at you. Hard sounds. English has more vowel pauses, so it "seems" slower, but it really isn't. The amount of data being expressed within a given period of time is fairly constant among all languages. It is the perception of speed that varies. Japanese is considered the "fastest" language. Listen to it being spoken. Again, the hard, consonant sounds are very apparent, which catch the listeners' attentions. French seems "slow", again because of the frequency of softer sounds. Anyway, this is my observation.

What has been helping me a lot with training my ears is an app known as Gritty Spanish. It is phenomenal. It also has transcripts where you see what they are saying in Spanish, as well as the English translation. I think it helps a lot and I also think Subtitles are phenomenal. You have to first train your eyes to have an idea of what is being said. Seeing does help with the pronunciation. At least for a start. Muchísimas gracias por estos videos increíbles. Me están ayudando mucho! Sigue así! No puedo esperar para llegar a su nivel.

    •  6 років тому +2

Yes, After this video, I made a video talking about the benefits of subtitles. There is some truth with what you say, but I don't believe that you have to see it exactly to train your ears. It can help some people though. Just depends on what type of learner you are I suppose. Y Gracias a ti por tu apoyo! Sigue pa' lante, Seguro que llegaras si sigues por ese camino.

Some good advice here but as usual the trick is like life if you want to learn and progress. No shortcuts you got to do the work like he says and put in the hours. Going to give this more of a try since I never really tried this method too much...unfortunately I've been stuck at the level where I can get the basic gist of things and understand the context but I can't understand everything still. Stand up comedy has got to be the biggest proof because I understand the overall context but don't get the jokes whatsoever (Makes me feel kind of dumb not going to lie). Maybe one day I can actually watch something in Spanish without subtitles but my hope has been declining day by day. I just ran into your videos so I will use your methods to help me. Thanks for the info, I still haven't given up yet.

I know I’m late to this video but I like lingopie for this. You can slow it down all the time to 50% (It gets distorted if you slow it too much) and you can click for a definition on screen. The translations are always perfect, but it’s not really for beginners anyway.

I spent alot of time learning vocabulary words and still couldnt make complete sentences or understand the spoken langauge. I can read it fairly well but its so important to listen and hear how native speakers use the langauge. Like me you may have been pronouncing the words incorrectly so you cant understand the accent. I started watching spanish tv shows alot and ive made huge strides in my comprehension. Watch them with the english subtitles and also watch them with the spanish subtitles. You'll start to notice you see and hear alot of the same words over and over. Write those words down and look up the translations for them. Its helping me learn actual conversational spanish that is spoken in everyday normal conversation instead of me filling my head with unnecessary vocab. You should watch a series called extra..and a series called destinos..also you can slow the speed down on you tube to help you understand better..those are some of my tips..bueno suerte! Good luck!

I also used Netflix stand ups to learn other languages in the same way. Watching typical movies and shows people speak in a very “TV” rhythm and fashion just like they do in English.
When you hear someone talking like someone from tv- they sound unnatural- well to me they do, so I try to find things were people speak generally how they would on the streets - stand ups 👍

I just realized that when people speak slow Spanish I understand it. I see now that most of them, especially Latin American ones just talk fast. I'm going to learn how to talk faster in general now lol. I just talk too slow.

I want to put together a music playlist, but I want to make sure I'm learning Mexican Spanish and not Caribbean, Murcian or any other version of spanish. Are there any artist you would recommend? I'm also learning on my own so forgive me if this question is kind of elementary. lol

The Spanish comedian , I caught the words, but i didn't know all the vocabulary. I guess i'm not at the point of being able to get a joke in Spanish, but thanks for the tips.

I´m Dominican born and raised and I couldn´t understand what that dude said either...I think I heard "de lo mío" and "klok" but barely. We speak fast and cut words but that is just and exaggeration o.o

How can I do this with native speakers in real life?

    •  5 років тому

I mentioned in the video that you people don't really repeat themselves many times, so this drill should be done on your own. This will help you to get accustomed to it, so that way you can understand them all.

I have Spanish B1.2. now and tried watching Casa de papel in Spanish... yeah, no. I would have understood equally as much if I had been watching the Chinese dub.
I feel like I am doing quite well in speaking and reading, but listening seems impossible.

Don't worry, Spanish from Spain is often weird. For example they say: "Me cago en la leche", which means they poop on the milk. Sometimes I don't understand what they say either. My gf is from Spain and I'm from Mexico, we often repeat ourselves to get what we said.

I also like to listen to Spanish radio stations where they interview guests. They speak more clearly and not so fast. I like RNE.

My big problem is that I really struggle to understand the español spoken on tv ,on Narcos for example. Now, Spanish conversations elsewhere at any speed are no problem ! Beats me.

    •  6 років тому +1

That's what I did. I always recommend authentic experience over classes any day. I didn't move countries, but I refused to speak English if I didn't have to.
