Honestly, as a young "man of the house" videos like these are so unbelievably useful when you don't have a dad around to show you these things. I think it's so important to learn, and you're honestly saving me and my family a load of money here not having to call a plumber. Cheers buddy, I'd buy you a pint if I could
Glad it was helpful!
Finally, someone who not only knows his stuff but can aslo explain things clearly to numpties like me. Thanks
Thanks Philip.
You, my sir are a UA-cam God. The thing I hate most about how to videos on UA-cam is when someone tells you the whole history of toilets before they tell you how to fix it. Thank you for getting straight to the point and showing me what's wrong. ;)
Nathan Barker No problem. Al.
Excellent, informative and well presented video.
The syphon in my cistern was a 2 parter. Turned off the water, removed the bit with the diaphragm, and took it to my local plumbers merchant. Bought 2 diaphragms (keeping 1 as a spare), fitted it and replaced in cistern. Whole repair - 50p. Didn't even need a spanner !
Thanks mate !
No problem.
My mum was quoted nearly a hundred quid to fix this! I'm gonna turn the water off and have a look now. Thanks for this great little video!😁
No problem Neil.
this video just made life much easier for me thanks mate
Alastair Gill
Very helpful and well explained. While I had access to the cistern, I also replaced the ball valve because it had been in place for 18 years, therefore, hopefully, reducing the need to re-access the cistern in the short term to replace a faulty ball valve.
Thank you so much, the pin had come off the syphon lever and I couldn't get it back up but watching your video i realised I could push it up from the bottom and grab hold off it.. Many thanks again
Thanks very much Mr, most of these toilets are nothing like mine and I almost gave up until I found this vid. You have saved me £s and lots of them.
No problem David.
Thanks for the concise informative video. Wondered what had happened to my loo and you've solved the mystery. Not a subject I know anything about so thanks!
Thanks for these - these things always seem to go wrong when you least expect.
I followed your excellent Vid to disassemble my Derwent Macdee Metro and was about to shoot off to the plumbers supply shop when my wife suggested cutting out a new Diaphragm Washer (using the old one as a template) from some plastic we had left over which looked to be about the same type. 10 minute job and all is back together and up and running.
Many Thanks
Yes, he should have mentioned that, and, also, WASHER to most people, brings to mind, a small circular Ring-like object. Not a large flexible bit of plastic. Otherwise , well done.
No worries pleased you managed it ok.
Regards,
al.
The best video showing what and how to solve the problem many thanks helped a lot
Thanks for the video. Mine just died and after watching your video I made a new diaphragm/washer out of the back cover of an old office type binder. It now flushes better than ever, much more positive. 👌
That`s great.
Thank you for a very clear and concise fix-it video. Helped me a lot.
Peter White No problem Peter. Al.
Good video
It's a very rewarding fix - a new flap valve washer can be made with a piece of a garden compost sack - use the old washer as a pattern.
Strangely short syphon units are better than a longer one - you don't have to lift the water so high to get the syphon action going.
Thanks for the tips.
I repaired the cracked washer with some sellotape good as new !
Excellent video, told me exactly what i wanted to know and how to repair the flush problem, many thanks 👍
You are welcome
Nice clear demonstration. Very very helpful, cheers!
No problem.
great video. My siphon washer is faulty. I shall replace it tomorrow. Many thanks.
No problem ,
kind regards,
al.
Brilliant easily understood gent..Great easy detail in short video..
Thanks Michael.
i dont know anything about toilet system but this video gave me some info. thanks
Very helpful and clear video. Many thanks.
You are welcome!
Thanks for tip. Replaced plastic flap with one fashioned out of plastic file😁. Double thickness, so won’t tear again and saved me a few ££.
Glad it helped!
Blilliant simple info . Cheers
Thanks for the vid, really helpful, I also got a very good tip tonight ... to use an old video case (the plastic cover that holds the cover picture in place) and use the old diaphragm as your template, worked a treat and didn't cost a penny.
+Heather Carpenter Nice idea. I had to make my own just now and used the plastic from a DVD case. It took ten minutes. You and dereton33 have saved my sanity. Thanks to you both!
Thanks @Dereton33 and @Heather as I did exactly as you suggested and fixed my toilet. I will remember you two everytime I do this from now on thanks
Excellent video. It worked just as He said it, brilliant
Excellent
Incredibly helpfull video, saved me the cost of a plumber telling me the same thing haha
Great to hear!
This is the second one for the basement bat. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOuLt8IL_GxhhaK8DBuKEL-zV0UJVpWZn , works great

No problem Mark.
Thanks so much - just what I needed. The wife thinks I'm a DIY guru thanks to you ! (that'll have to be our secret though lol !)
Excela Interim No problem, Al,
I'm telling....
Great video, cost £3 for a new gasket and job done in 15 minutes. Cheers!
Nice one
Brilliant, thank you. That helped me
You're welcome!
thank you so much it worked for me.Cos everwhere is closed cos of virus couldn,t get a diaphram but selotaped the splits in it and it worked,Meanwhile I have ordered one online.hope it lasts till I get it.well done thanx
Glad it helped
thanks very much - my family think I'm clever now ;-) cheers will donate
Thanks Justin.
Thanks so much for this !
You're very welcome!
Went for one of those Dudley siphons you mentioned in another video, sadly it wouldn't fit inside the cistern as it must be narrower than a standard unit, instead I ended up cutting my own replacement diaphragm out of some plastic to repair the old siphon for free! Cheers.
No problem.
No problem , I feel quite flushed.
al.
Thank you so much for your help!!!
No problem
Oh, can't take the syphone thing out as I don't have access to the fixing under the cistern!! Have to take the cistern off and theres a pipe going into it!! And I can't undo it!! What a nightmare!
thanks for this, ours has been funny for a while now and its to point its not flushing, and i have to add a bit extra water by tweeking the screw on the ball cock lever. its hit and miss with if it flushes or not but its better than what it was, great as a tempory fix...for us anyway.
Im still tasked with this job of taking the syphon off, and was puzzled on how i got into it to see what was wrong. so once again thanks for this video :) ..... seeing if i can replace the washer is a lot simpler than the confusing but of replacing the whole thing thesedays.
No problem rodney.
dont forget you can cut a new one from a thick plastic bag using the old one as a template if you can't get to a plumbers merchant or if you want to save a few £
Thanks a lot! 👍👍👍
You are welcome!
Thank you so much, Now i know whats happened:)
Why is the toilet bowl water level low? Can it be raised?
Really helpful & informative. But how do we get this part out? Am scared to take apart in case I make it worse or it ends up leaking everywhere. Presumably the cistern needs to be emptied of water??
I have a video on how to do it.
@@dereton33 Thank you. I will take a look again :-)
Good man yourself :)
The diaphragm is designed to fail so you buy a new one, knowing this I
made a new diaphragm from some old kitchen lino, WOW, works better than
the origanal plastic , I also super glued the lino to the base.
Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for this, I have a leak UNDERNEATH the toilet, leading to the overflow in the cistern. It happens every few days or maybe a week without, but never at the time it's flushed. Inside the cistern it's dripping from around the fill valve where the plastic nut is attached to the float cup but not dripping underneath from that pipe. Everything looks ok with this, but bought a modern one, but not yet replaced as can't get nut off underneath. My question is, could the dripping be due to a flushing problem due to the syphon (it sometimes takes a few hard pushes before it flushes - lever handle). You showed the 2 small washers you put back on just before putting the loop back on. When I press the flush handle, these are mid way on the thin tube thing. I have another toilet the same and these 2 washers remain at the bottom. It's driving me nuts trying to solve (whilst on the bathroom floor I also discovered a long crack extending over all the tiles across the room, starting at the edge near the toilet so that's another problem). My husband isn't interested in anything to do with the house so I try to deal with everything & know how to solve overflow problems but this is different, so thought I could tackle it. Could the syphon be letting water out, leading to fill valve dripping and increasing the water level. If that was the case, surely it would be coming from the pipe outside on the wall & not underneath in that area. (nothing is loose underneath). Also there is a long thin transparent tube/bag attached to where the fill valve is. This is split. Could it just be due to that? Thank you for any help anyone can give.
Hi julies, It will be the fill valve letting by. A complete new valve is the best option. If you get water running into the pan all the time even though it is just a small amount the the syphon will also need renewing or a new washer fitted inside it.
Thank you so much. I've ended up booking a plumber to do it now as the problem is harder than I thought and the stop cock under sink has been seized up far too long so he might as well do both@@dereton33
I need to make my own washer out of plastic as I can't get to the shops or order on-line, as I'm in a hurry.
Thanks for the video. My washer/diaphragm looks as though it's been savaged by rodents. My local place doesn't sell them, so I made my own as a temporary fix - a panacea for the pan - and will buy one soon. Thanks!
+Andrew Curtis . No problem.
How do I know what size of unit I I want to replace the whole thing. Is there a way to measure or are they all standard fit?????
There is an adjustable one that fits all, made by turboflush.
What material is the washer made from? It appears to be a plastic type material? Is it possible to use say a thick plastic sheet and cut your own replacement?
Yes you can do.
Fantastic, thanks for the speedy reply, I'll give that a go this weekend before ordering a new syphon, livingh in a small village in the Highlands means no B&Q round the corner so it's a couple of days wait.
Thanks for the helpful and informative video.
@@dereton33 could you use plumbers gasket material for the washer? or a silicone sheet, like the ones for baking to cut from
@@spidiq8I would suggest making yourself a template, then you can make one before you dissemble the toilet and it will be a lot quicker to replace the washer.
@@dragonlord0666 Thankfully having 2 toilets meant I could disassemble it and then work on it. I used a laminating pouch sheet to make a replacement, ran it through the laminator with no paper in so it glued together & formed a rigid plastic washer, still working great since my first comment here.
I don't know if you can help me,but I 'm trying to repair a Armitage shanks syphonic toilet from the 1970s .Had bought a new one from Wickes, but this doesn't work as it should . Have contacte Lunns measured the height 7 " and a am good to go again. The original had a torpedo which was broken (hope I'm making sense ) ..The kit comes with a Syvac unit ,which I've been trying to find a tutorial on . I see how I think it goes ,but it looks too long ? I'm guessing at the moment .Need to dismantle again and measure the distance .....Anyway ,if you have any advice for me I'd be more than grateful ....
+richard evans Hio Richard those syphonic toilets are a lot of hassle and without being able to see it I cannot advise you on this one.
+dereton33 Thanks all the same..appreciate other You Tube vids
Managed to do it eventually..
So if the wire doesn't return to pull down the handle , that means the washer or the spring is broken ?
Yes that`s right.
@@dereton33 thanks .... new S needed then per your other video the Dudley system.
What would you replace that with?
I would replace it with a Dudley splitable sypon so you do not have to remove the cistern from the back of the pan to renew it.
Regards,
al.
Brill …. Now show us how to reinstall this in the canister
Easy I have lots of vids on how to do it.
Do I need to turn off the water supply to the toilet ?
Yes.
@@dereton33 turned it off, the tap was on the wall, not on the floor, near the toilet. Not really a tap, a valve.
