Thanks Al.
You truly are a legend. I always end up back at your channel for plumbing things. I replaced radiators on my own thanks to your help several years ago. Thank you.
Glad to help.
Using it on the bottom washer was exactly the question I had for Plumbers Mait. Sage advice once again, you’re a star!
No problem 😊
Thank you - really helpful for a novice who has just replaced a toilet fill valve. It nearly worked, but am now doing it again, with Plumber's Mait around the base
Excellent!
Great to see you're still making videos, I run my own business and UA-camrs such as yourself still help me to this day. You do make a difference to people in this world. Thank you
I appreciate that! Many thanks.
Thank you sir🫡 I hope this reaches you and those you love in great health and happiness❤️🙏
It has thanks.
I know alot of plummers use silicone. But I use plummers mate for basin wastes. Never failed me. Also easy to replace if needed 👌
Too true Paul.
I’ve seen it fail
@@RealBoiJare wasn't done right so

Hi Al. That was a first class presentation, I used to be an area salesman for that company for 32 years and I covered Devon for a few years, now drawing my pension. Not a great seller but all the merchants stocked it. Glad you remembered the song. I always look out for you I have a static caravan in Devon.
I will have to look out for you too. Thanks for the kind comments.
Yep tried this too, I don’t know if it’s the water pressure or water temperature that makes it slightly harder and it does stop small leaks for years, highly recommended 👍🏻
Thanks Stuart.
Thank you! Bought a kitchen sink and the basin waste came without a rubber seal, I’ll be using plumbers mait! Cheers!
It works.
I use plumbers mait in-between 1" steel nipples and connections, in the grease trap industry for professional kitchens. It's better than PTFE as sometimes I need to back off the thread a bit. Great tips. Thanks for vid.
No problem. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the info, especially about not to use it on the outside of joints.
No problem Ray.
I used it to repair a crack in an old high-level plastic cistern 12 years ago. It's still there and the leak hasn't come back! I think that might be because it's permanently below the water line though, so it doesn't dry out.
Could be
British Gas changed a motorised valve on my central heating system and a compression joint leaked. He undone it and plastered it with plumbers mate. It did stop the leak but they’re supposed to be the professionals.
Even they can slip up, it happens.
Thank you for the help, Sir. I shall subscribe!
Thanks David.
remember the says of fitting basin wastes before silicone
Great days.
Hi there i have an old style toilet, Fordham Elan, about 1988 vintage, and have a leak at bottom of tank, their is adownpipe with round platic nut and above that big plastic hexigan nut, it appears to be leaking around there, i assume i have to take the syphon out and change the rubber seal at the bottom, its 2" as far as i can tell, with some plumbers mait...from Fred in Essex Uk
Yes that is right Fred. Good luck with it.
@@dereton33 Cheers, i think its Ron?, would you just clean the surfaces and put the bottom seal in dry, or put some plumbers mate or grease or some thing on it, and i presume at the pan end of the pipe the big white cone thing is the only seal, nothing inside Fred
I used it to seal the connection from the cistern to the back of WC pan. Worked a treat. Much better join than when it was fitted and cheap option too!
Yes it`s good stuff.
Thanks Al
Keep posting !!
Thanks, will do!
Can you use it around a weeping compression joint if undoing it & put some around olive???thanks 👍
No it will not work. Undo it and put PTFE tape around the olive.
Thanks I thought not, have now wrapped some PFTE tap around, fingers crossed 🤞
Thanks Al great stuff. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
No problem 👍
Thanks to you i have managed to do my Cloakroom toilet , ensuite and will be starting Main bathroom soon , can i use Plumbers Mait on a 135 degree join on guttering to stop it dripping ? , can't find replacement part. Many Thanks.
Only if you take the part right out dry off any water and get rid of any muck on it. Use the mait over the old rubber seals. Re-inset the guttering take off any squeezed out mait , job done.
@@dereton33 Thank you for replying , I will try that when I get a chance and it stops raining.
Could you use it where a pvc pipe waste meets an old cast iron soil pipe? In the cast iron boss?
Yes it is very good for that.
Could I use it on a plastic flush cone on a concealed toilet? Great video.
yes no problem.
@dereton33 Many thanks for the quick response. I wasn't sure because I heard you sa you couldn't use it on plastic
What can I use on a constant slow dripping leak under a toilet cistern that I can't get dry? Even if it's just a temporary fix until I get a plumber in. I think it's a rubber seal that has started disintegrating. Thank you!
A tub of plumbers mait is good. Although it is best used on a dry surface. Might be worth looking for leak sealers than can be used on a wet surface.
@@dereton33 Thank you. I've given it a go and it seems to be working!
I ust used a large amount of this stuff on my bath, because despite following best practice for applying silicone sealant, it was still leaking!
My cousin was also used as added weight, he sat in warm water for me whilst I shoved plumbers mait in to the join behind where I applied silicone sealant all along the bath
Moment of truth today, when I take a shower
Good luck.
So what happened?
Hi, I have a leaking shower waste. Water getting under the waste flange. Would this be any good under the waste flange on the shower tray top? However the waste is plastic so just wondering if this would work? Thanks
Yes, absolutely
@dereton33 fantastic. Thanks for getting back to me. The plumber who fitted it used silicone, but everywhere! In the thread, under flange, on the rubber seal ring. It was a mess, all brown mouldy and very wet and it had failed badly. Caused a lot of damage to the wood joists.
I put a new one on, but it's leaking, possibly an imperfection on the tray waste hole.
Will try plumbers mait.
Thanks again much appreciated.
Hi, great videos! The underside of the drain hole on my new bath is uneven and leaking when testing. Can I use plumbers mait here, as it will be under pressure when the bath drains from full? Many thanks
Yes, absolutely
@dereton33 Great, thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't sure if there would be too much pressure for it. It only leaks when the bath is over 1/4 full, anything less isn't enough pressure by the looks of it.
Another question: Should I throw the seals or use it with them? Cheers
Plumers mate must very good stuff for sinks and more great product
I agree.
Always use it on basin wastes before tightening the thrust nut underneath. Can't understand why people use silicone there.
Me neither. All the best mate.
@@dereton33 👍
Total DIY guy here, can you use this around a drippy leaking strap boss soil stack?
Yes you can!
Theres always an old yellowing tub of that in various sheds and garages 🤣
Great stuff.
A big Thank you ❤️
You're welcome 😊
If plumber putty shouldn’t be used on plastic, can I use silicone caulk instead? Thanks.
Yes
Served my apprenticeship in the 80s and was shown this, mounted(as it was called)
Loads of basins etc using this stuff.unfortunately some people never rolled it enough and their sausage was too stiff, ooh matron, resulting in the wastes leaking when the hot water getting to it,then some idiot decided silicone was better.unless you have to remove the waste later.sometimes the old ways were better.good info on here
Here here good on yer Thomas.
Nice vid. Is plumbers mait better for bedding in waste fitting than a bead of silicone?
Certainly is.
With silicone you need to wait atleast an hour before testing for leak. But with plumbers mait you can check it straight away and is also easy to clean. This is why I prefer plumbers mait over silicone.
It amazes me in this day that plumbing stuff like plug holes, radiator valves, still needs loads of additional sealant or PTFE round so they don't leak you should just be able to screw it in job done.
Manufacturing tolerances or laziness/cheapness. I’ll let you decide!
@@CallumAtwal well not sure if am honest I only ever do DIY plumbing but when I have put radiators on some say 7 times round with PTFE some say 14 ,others say use locktite. Should be ready to install with nothing I think.
@@JR-1983 yep same I only do DIY. radiators are the biggest culprit ive seen. The rads from Screwfix require so much PTFE to make a seal it's unreal
Welcome to the world of plumbing ha ha.
@@dereton33 dragons den idea then ready to go valves hahah
I have a very slight leak at the top of my flush pipe (cistern side). Will plumber mait stop the leak if I apply it the outisde of the flush pipe?
Sorry no.
I am stuck. I have a pinhole leak coming from the end of a half-inch pipe that was cut and crimped years ago.It is still attached to the central heating system in the cellar but cannot be turned off. This active leak drips every minute or so. There is very little length of the pipe to get a valve on it. Can you PLEASE suggest a method to seal this leak. It is driving me crazy.
Can you get back to a compression fitting then you could remove the pipe and fit a cap on the fitting. You will have to drain down though.
Thanks for the reply. Sadly draining down is not an option. I am looking for something that I can put over the leak. I read about epoxy putty. I am tempted to try that.@@dereton33
Great information, much appreciated, thank you. 👍👍👍
No problem 👍
What's wrong with Plumbers Putty? Maybe I'm behind the times.
Nothing it's great stuff 👌
Dear Sir, Dereton33: Is this putty useful for stopping the kitchen sink copper drain pipe leak?
No not copper.
Will this work on the pvc connection at the waste pipe on the back of the toilet? Very very slight drip
Yes it is ideal for there.
I have used it on waste fittings BUT it shouldnt be needed if the seals are ok.Having said that what plumber would be a plumber if he didnt stink of the stuff?Answer...A bad plumber.
Too true ha ha.
Most tubes, pipes, joints are made of PVC/plastic, if can't use there it very limit application !
It can be used on plastics.
Thanks so much. Very helpful
No problem.
The seals supplied should be good enough. They never are so we have to bodge.
Cany beat the mait.
Great video my good friend
Thank you! Cheers!
It's great for making doughnut washers too if you haven't got the right one 👍
Very true! Cheers PB.
@@dereton33 Mmmmm! Doughnuts!

Do you put anything on the thread before tightening the trap nut to it?
No..
@@dereton33 Thank you Sir!
Any idea why a Baxi Bermuda boiler keeps locking out? I can't find a plumber to look at it as they say it's obsolete. Resetting doesn't help.
Can be many things Im afraid. It will need looking at first hand.
@@dereton33 If I can find a plumber. The expense of a replacement isn't appealing.
Baxi Bermuda is a simple backboiler and unless it's on a sealed system there is no reset.
On reflexion, if it's one of the last variants with electronic ignition then poor pilot fllame/ flame supervision most common issues. Pcb failures also common. Your best bet is a Baxi one off service call. Unless the heat exchanger leaks, it's worth fixing.
@@johnward5006 Mine does have a switch. And it says to wait 10 seconds and turn it back on.
I've been fitting sinks for donkeys and I never thought of that.
Great, never to late to learn .
Since when do donkeys have sinks?! Wokeness gone mad.
thanks 👍👍👍👍
No problem 👍
I'm a plumber for donkeys years mate and trust me mate all plumbers use silicon time is money my friend try it
Sticky stuff once on your hands its hard to remove, stuff fixed with it is difficult to remove.. Hate it.
@@dereton33 if you are jobbing plumber like me silicon denzo tape always save the day👍
It says on the side of the tub to get rid of of excess to rub some more plumbers mate against it !
@dereton33 I agree. When a toilet syphon fails, you're having to scrape off the old silicone because the new doughnut washer won't sit properly. If you apply silicone and it leaks, then you have to take all the gunk off a start again.
Same with the basin waste. I repaired it when someone put silicone on the lip of it and it failed.
I love your videos.
Thanks Mike.
Silicon is the modern way.
The crap way.
in your scenario why do you have a macerator
It was easier to get the camera round the back of the pan to film than my other WC.
Any apprentices watching .... don't use mastic , use mait,
, especially for the poor sod who has to work on that basin trap in the future )
Great advice. Am about to do a video on this very subject.
We were still using this carp when i started back in the late 80's. Its a pita to get off to repair taps, wastes etc. Putty is even worse sets like granite. Rubbish non removal product. Washers and silicone is and has been the industry standard for years now.
Washers always fail and silicone makes it impossible to remove sanitaryware stuck with the stuff. Plumbers mait anytime proven over the last 60 years.
👍🏿👍🏿Mait nice video
Ha ha thanks Paul Mait.
I’ve not used that shit for over 20yrs silicone is far better
Best stuff since sliced bread. Mait that is.Ha ha.
Are you Sting from The Police?
I wish.
@@dereton33 I always have some plumbers mate around. It does give an excellent seal. The one place I don't use it is on a sink or bath waste where it can be seen (inside the basin), because over time it stains & starts to look grubby. I use clear silicone wherever the seal needs to remain neat. Sting is starting to look a lot like you as he ages btw. No sh*t.

Thanks.
