Super good explanation, fixed the flaps temporarily until the new one arrives and it works perfectly. Never really thought about how it works until seeing your video.
Well done!
I'm pretty useless at DIY, but I've just replaced the diaphragm in my toilet syphon after watching your video. I cut the replacement out of a 4 pint plastic milk bottle using what was left of the old diaphragm as a template. (Make sure you have a pen that will write on plastic). It took about 15 minutes and no money and I have a flushing toilet again! Thanks so much!
After suffering with a toilet that had an ineffective flush for TWO YEARS ‼️ .... I watched your video and was brave enough to give it a go. Now we have an adjusted syphon & a fully working flush 😊. Soooooo grateful 🙏
I fixed mine after seeing this video and the comment on using the film from a cheese packet! I used some plastic from a clear report cover (the type that you use a slide bar with)… I am so pleased 😀 thank you
Top work! Any more questions you can ask live tomorrow morning!
2 things...
Number 1, that Lego head you have is crazy, what is it?
Number 2, the never mind the ballcocks sticker is epic, you need to start some competitions man I need to win one!
Hold tight!
great video - really well explained and demonstrated!
Thanks for the advice - I know I need a replacement diaphragm for my siphon thanks to the video. I'd have happily bought it from your website, but you don't seem to sell parts?
Great channel is there anything on the market that will stop a toilet seat from moving from side to side,
Supplied bolts and wings are rubbish thanks
Great information, just about to fit one of these..
Thanks! Just made my own flapper & fixed the loo :)
Good man!

Hi plumberparts. Ignore the troll comments about being “shouty” or “trying to be a UA-cam star”. You ARE a UA-cam star, getting straight into the video without wasting any time, unlike most UA-cam videos that are more to do with hopeless wannabe, bedroom video producers (unboxing and all that kind of time-wasting rubbish). Brilliant and straight-to-the-point. Anyone else would have taken twice the time and bored us to death. Brilliant editing, cutting out the excessive crap (pun intended) normally found in UA-cam videos. Well done.
Iain Meteorscan thanks mate! Only just seen this! 😂😂😂🙈🙈🙈
Thank you, huge help
The amount of customers I have complain of there flush not clearing the contents of the pan is crazy, your telling them to reduce the flush volume? So your logic is to have a 4 litre or so flush and flush it two to 3 times to clear the contents of the pan because lets face it thats what happens. How is that saving water? I remember the 9 litre flushes. Only had to pull the chain once
James Cole Hi James. It's not my logic, merely an option supplied with most siphon units. It's my job to explain their use. Sorry to have upset you! PP! :)
Wrong syphon again ‘this guys a joke
How? Explain!
There was no way you could have taught that better, absolutely brilliant. Youre like the professor of plumbing
I also cut out a bit of plastic from an old dog food bag, good as new. I am a bit saddened that most would just think "rip out and replace" is better because "its cheap" (£10 vs £1 though...)- couldn't more plumbers carry a handful of diaphragms? Take up much less space than syphons (not that many carry a spare or two these days?
Excellent tutorial, thanks. Does what it says on the tin, no bullshit, clear diction and no wordy time-wasting, very well presented.
Helped me solve MY problem anyway, thanks. Also understand something about how the syphon works. Enjoyed your enthusiasm for the mechanics of the cistern! An antidote to those rather serious and self important people who ramble on in a monotone ....... More power to your elbow (joint) !
The bit of plastic on the siphon rod that the hook goes through snapped off today. I had no idea how these things work but after watching your video I reckon I should be able to push the rod back up from underneath and improvise something to re-attach the hook. Thanks very much.
Thanks for all your videos. Which duel toilet siphon and water filler are long-lasting and easy to service?
Finally found an answer for what those plugs do, legend thanks mate 👍🏻 your videos are helping me do my first bathroom refurb…. Hold tight!!
Great video as always. I don't understand why manufacturers do not make it easier to replace diaphragms as they seem to be such a common point of failure. Is it better to replace the whole siphon unit if the diaphragm fails rather than just repair the diaphragm? New siphons are quite cheap these days and the effort to repair it with some second-hand plastic seems not worth all the effort. Am I missing something?
Thanks! On my siphon, both holes are unplugged. I'd like to close the upper one, but don't have the plugs. What can I use to close that hole?
WHOA ! I had to reduce the speed to 75%, easier to take in, or make notes. I've yet to see anyone on Y T. explain why, after flushing, the handle only returns half way, and has to be manually raised. Is the Diaphram leaking ?
Anyone coming to this having bought a Skylo 3 part Dual flush... the pack enclosed instructions are misleading and make no reference to the rubber flange STAYING ON the pipe that goes thro the cistern hole and then externally fitting the metal plate and then washer/nut....cause there isn't a washer in my pack(maybe an oversight/mistake at packaging)...the Viva company video doesn't show it either !! Fortunately I'm not stupid and came here to doublecheck- that I'm not stupid! Thanks for great video...showing flange!
Q….
Fitted new syphone, but still not flushing. Do I need to use the spare washers or remove the 2 yellow plugs…
Is like there’s an air lock
Regards
Paul
Thank You mate!
The first video/instruction that explains the fact that the thin diaphragm actually flips up to allow the water through, after pushing the first litre of so, as it moves inside the l piston.
Top Tip= to replace the diaphram, remove the original and use it as a template to cut a new one. I used the material that comes in the packets when you buy sliced cheese or meats from the supermarket- the pull back 'lid', not the base.
you might demostrate how a dual flush syphon works another time around, unless you have already. I like you videos, there to the point, keep up the the good work.
Hi Jimmy. How do you know when to use a regular donut seal, like the one in the video, or a continental type on a closed couple toilet? Thanks. Hold tight!!!!!
I can’t get the white plastic nut off from under the syphon. It seems to be stuck as been on for 30 years. Going to try WD 40 and hot water. Do you have any other ideas how I can get it off? It’s not a close coupled toilet. The cistern is still on the wall. The pipe from the cistern to the toilet is visible. This is where the white syphon nut is. That’s what I’m trying to open. I’m doing this as the diaphragm needs changing. But I can’t as I can’t remove that white nut from under the syphon. Please help.
Good video. I have a problem with my flush I was just wondering if you can help me. I have the flush with the ball and the problem is my flush lever, when I try to flush and turn the lever it will not flush. I have to pump the lever a few times untill it goes kinda heavy like the pressure is building up then when I turn the lever again it flushes. How can I fix this problem. Thanks in advance
*if only the syphon works like it does in this video! I’ve fitted 3, yes 3 of these today, different brands and sizes and NONE of them worked!!!*
another excellent video from your main man!quite tricky principle those flush siphons aren't they?ingenious little unit!
can someone please clarify the "continuous flow" aspect, it's doing my head in lol
So when the water is introduced into the panel, I can accept that a little bit of it pushes into the ciphon beyond the flaps/diaphragm.
When you pull on the handle stick, that little bit of water is forced though (by flaps/diaphragm rising) into and down the main flush pipe.
But how come after that first pull on the handle stick, the whole damn body of water flies up into the ciphon in a continuous stream, is there a small pump or oscillating bit inside? thanks for any insight cos I'm stumped.
thats oh syphons work bud... ua-cam.com/video/CZmP0vsRBZ8/v-deo.html
So the plastic flaps, are they the diaphragm? Water is running constantly into the bowl and the guy in b&q sold me a replacement diaphragm
the diaphragm on my siphon has failed, but my cistern is all boxed in behind wooden units and I can't get access to it. I can only access the top of the cistern lid.
Any way to fix this without being able to unscrew the bottom of the cistern outlet, or am I just in a whole world of pain?
There are much better systems for syphoning these days miles better to replace with a Syphon that is slimmer and with a push button instead of a handle with waste overflow built in I know this is not the point of the video and it's a great video but your wasting your time replacing the parts in an old Syphon
Wanted to change the Syphon myself until I found that the installer put a ton of silicon sealant on the wall to secure the cistern to the wall instead of two wall screws. Job for a plumber now I think.
Yap just done replacing the diaphragm with some plastic from a notebook cove,r and the damn thing works like charm.
Good stuff!
You bloody belter... just mended my syphon using a milk bottle.. thanks for the great video. I am now subscribed!
Hi mate, changed my siphon unit today with guidance from your video, well explained and easy to understand. Many thanks.
Just replaced the diaphragm on my toilet using this video as a guide. Thanks for the help.
No worries Valerie! I hope your toilet is alll good now!
I might try and fix mine before I replace it then, thanks 😊
Why do they still sell siphon toilets when flapper valves are simpler and easier to install?
Just replaced the diaphragm in a shires siphon. Problem was (and still is) not enough water is being drawn into the pan, so basically half the water is still left in the cistern after flushing. There are no holes in the side of the syphon or the diaphragm. Any ideas what my problem might be or how i can increase amount of water being flushed?
2 years ago, I was just browsing your site, and today i repaired my cistern flap with a home made flap, using one of those plastic folders. I drew round the bit it sits on, and cut it out. so now it's better than the one supplied (frankly the original plastic is a joke, no better than a 'bag for life' bag thickness) the plastic must not be too thick, or it will not allow a full flow.
I followed your tutorial, and it all works fine. took a couple of hours, but i had to clean it all too. I recommend using a bit of silicone like you said (insurance). Also, hold the ballcock shaft inside the cistern, when you tighten the water supply pipe nut (mine turned a bit at first).
In all, it saved me a lot of money using a plumber, and I bought nothing.
Thanks for the tutorial.
PS, I am used to installing washing machines, so a bit of knowledge from that came in handy, but i'd say to everyone, give it a go, just be methodical.
Thanks, I've recently completed my NVQ2 in Plumbing, and I've found your videos have helped me so much. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Bob
just great, clearly spoken and discribed perfectly well simple straight to the point video, have subscribed looking forward to more great vids
Thank you so very much! I have just fixed our toilet. My girlfriend is nervous and we have had a lot of problems recently. Tried what you said about cutting a piece of plastic to size to make the "flap" fitted it back, ten minute job or less, because it happened to be a detachable system, I didn't have to empty the cistern. If you want free advertising, I'm your man!
Just came from a video you did in 2011, your excitement level has increased 350%, many thanks for sharing your knowledge to plebs like me m8, very clear and informative.
+J Gurjar Ha! No worries mate!
Cheers Dude. I have exactly the problem you describe. Getting ready to install new syphon but have been pondering exactly how it all works Now I know thanks to this excellent tutorial. 👍
Dear sir today I replaced New siphon but It's not working also volume hol up & down change I try to more but didn't working also I am plumber. I need your help if upload videos about this
How do make the siphon drain all the water from the tank?
What us the proper way to meassure what size of syphon
Thank you that, you just solved my problem of how to feed my pond fish. I have thousands of water shrimp and fleas that multiply like mad in a separate tank, and have problems netting them because of the algae covered rocks they feed on. going to make a tank with a flush in it, away from the rocks of course, and plumb it from the garden shed to the pond.
And when you talked about the 2 plugs that adjusts the water being used. I am thinking of how I was adjusting the flapper float on my kohler toilet and I am able to conserve water and get the bowl refilled completely (because it's siphonic) with every flush.
Great video mate but no sign of big G!
Having just completed my level 2 city and guilds qualification we touched on the different flash vavles and the ability to influence the flush amount and time. I know many customers don't know you can adjust the flush time using the plugs on the side.
Perhaps we could cover FOVs next time? There are so many types which are manufactured to the 4 and 6 ltr water regs spec.
Keep up the good work and HOLD TIGHT!
Made this so much easier to fit. Thank you !
Brilliant! Thanks for explaining how the Syphon flush works! How fucking clever is that!!
Anyway. Thanks again.
Keep em coming! 👍🏼👌🏼
Do not replace this syphon for like for like or renew the diaphragm washer use a dismatablle syphon that can be repaired without taking the syphon out of the cistern a5 minute installation
So how do you increase the flow? We have a floater problem - post curry.
top man, didnt know about 2 piece syphon checked mine it was.ten minute fix .5 stars
A super tutorial..thanks to you I'm no longer afraid to tackle this job..keep up the good work.
Great clip, thanks for the upload. I remember when we had our Opella flush fitted by a plumber about five years ago it had a duel flush but this is no longer working, any ideas why this has happened? It’s not a button flush but the exact same one as shown in this video. Any help would be much appreciated.
@plumberparts. You haven't upset me lol. I just think its a daft idea having a 4 litre flush that you have to flush two or three times to clear any tissue etc. I know it's not your fault. Great explanation mate, keep it up!
Mate great video 👍🏼 but wonder if you can help please? I just bought a toilet and installed it but the problem I m having is it splashes out the bowl when I flush it, it’s a dual flush siphon and is tied all the usuals like lowering the water level. It just seems to come out so fast that it hits the centre of the bowl. Any help would be appreciated 👍🏼
After I put on the new syphon to a wall hanging unit water leaks from the lock nut. No matter what I do, use the new washer inside, outside, use washers both sides, tighten hand tight, medium tight, tight, , try the old washer, get a second whole new syphon and try again…it won’t stop dripping.
Could be a tiny crack in the cistern I guess. Hard to say!
@@plumberparts thanks for your reply - yes 10/10 well done - there is a tiny crack in the cistern !
Always a great job, always helpful thanks and hello from Dublin
Those Ryobi tools look very smart! Like the look of the 3 battery power pack!
That's Barry Scott's brother
do you know what a thing that screws into to drain end of the siphon like an afterburner type thing?
You got a license for them guns fella?💪🏼
Bit more gym time on your hands these days?
Thanks for the advice. By the way is your dad Bradley Walsh?
the top of flush has snapped off this morning where the linkage connects any ideas ?? Help
How has the ryobi set held up?
Great Video! One question:-The diaphragm is cheap, needing to replace inconvenient, the house call for plumber repairs expensive , Could you replace the single diaphragm with two washer diaphragm sandwiched together? Would it lengthen the service life? Is there a different material apart from Plastic, say silicone rubber diaphragm?
---and the reply was----?
Brilliant and at the right level
Thanks for the information. :-) I'm going to mess in the loo, now I know the problem and how to fix it :-)
Why do you have to shout so much?
TOP TIP - Jas
No need to buy new syphon membranes. I use the plastic bags that my cat's (Harry) dry food comes in. Being a spoilt bugger, he gets Hills, but the plastic bags from any dry cat food will do. Just cut out the shape of the original membrane and whack it in the syphon. I've done loads and never replaced one yet. Some still going 8 years later. See George for details.
Hold tight!!!!!
.
woodbine66 We did have it in the video then removed it because people get all funny about stuff like that!
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant 👏 😀
Lovely bit of product placement there ;-) Love it!
I'm american and have never seen one of these before!
Thanks for your helpful video great help
Sorted after watching your video. Thank you!
Great vid, thanks for the explanation!
I had a weak flush issue from a property I bought and thanks to you its all sorted! You saved me from buying a new siphon and other stuffs which the plumber said we needed. Your video was a bit fast for me and I almost gave up listening until when you mentioned about plugging the hole to increase the flush and even the pin to release the siphon. I did it myself and it just flushes well now. Thank you!
Ha! No worries! I'll try to slow down next time...😎
Quite easier to understand
Very thorough and informative. Thank you.
Great explanation how do I know which size siphon I need to get
But how overflow works
Legend, thanks.
Superb easy to understand insight.
Every time I see this video, I am thinking of how a rubber hose drained my clogged sink into a bucket.
+STLbluesfan1 Nice!
Very helpful video. Looking to replace a diaphragm soon and this video has come in very handy.
Lewis Heffernan No worries
I saw the ultimate handyman replace a siphon like that with a dual flush siphon with a peg you pull out to remove the top of the siphon.
Yeah I've done loads of those!
Just as expected
Hey, really useful, thank you 🙏🏼
Great tutorial! I have one question though. Surely the amount of water thats used in one flush it determined by the amount of water sitting in the systen tank (set by ball cock). So when a siphon is refered to as "6 litre", what does that actually mean?
No, it's also set by the break in the syphon unit. Little hole in the side that you can cover over if you wish. SUBSCRIBE! ➡️👉 ua-cam.com/users/plumberparts 👈⬅️ IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY! 😎
The bit i don't get is, Its rated as a 6 litre flush with the bung in or out. But you can have a swimming pool amount of water in the cistern which will all be siphoned out until it gets to the bung hole. So why is it rated as a 6 litre flush. Seems irrelevant.
