Outstanding. The piece at the end about only needing to replace the diaphram and how to get at this without dismantling the entire cistern saved me a ton of money and work. Thank you sir!

I had this exact problem about 6 weeks ago. Managed to get it sorted watching some of your older videos.
Only problem I ran into was the cistern was quite small, so a new siphon unit didn’t fit. Ended up getting a fluid master one that was much slimmer.
    Thanks for your videos!

James, you are a Godsend! My toilet wasn't flushing well and all the videos I'd watched talked about replacing the entire siphon, which entails removing the cistern from a close-coupled toilet, as per your video. Thankfully I found this video and it's the only one to mention how to replace the diaphragm with a new piece of flexible plastic. Thankfully I already had a 2 piece siphon, so could remove half without taking off the cistern. Found that the original diaphragm (blue plastic) was brittle and had cracks and an entire piece missing. Cut a bit out of a plastic bag (one that had originally had gravel in, so relatively heavy-duty plastic) and cut to size. Works perfectly and fixed for free! Many thanks!

Absolute legend mate! Flush was very weak/not happening. It was the diaphragm, cut a piece of the exact same shape and size from a clear flimsy folder from Ryman I had laying around and now is working as good as new. Piece of advice for anyone...if your toilet is like this and has that metal holding the bolts...mark the position before you loose it. Had to put it on and off three times to get it how it was hahaha.

Briiliant, thanks for this. Seeing this gave me the confidence to go in and see what the problem was when the flush only worked intermittently. Hi, James.. have you also got a sort of pump with a hose that can fit 15mm pipe and suck some water from the central heating? It happened to me that the drain off valve was not on the lowest point of the sustem and I had to install a tower rail and connect it to pipes that were very low on the wall and I couldn't solder the return one because of the dripping water not even with bread. Somebody suggested a vacuum cleaner for water. Any ideas I could get from your Amazon store?

I like the 4" rubber diaphragms rather than plastic. Think they last longer. If I ever run out of replacements/spares, I rummage through the missus' knickers drawer. I've been reading up about "black holes." Gravitational density. Even time slows down and light is sucked in. See Messrs. L. Krauss and S. Hawking.

I think the goal with that red pump is to pump once and then let the syphon action do the rest of the work. There's a little valve on top that needs to be closed for that to happen.
Ofcourse if there's a leak it probably will not work as air gets sucked in.
All the best, from Belgium, where toilets look quite different!

I had the same job a few months ago. Continental type rubber seal and metal clamp has disintegrated.
Only problem was, I was still getting leaks from the back of the closed couple section, even with new parts all round.
Is it just luck of the draw if the toilet uses a donut type seal or a continental type seal?

Screwfix have a Euroflo Cistern Coupling Kit (4016D) for £5, which I hear works better than the metal plates, and do not rust and seal better. Also some plumbers clean all the corrosion and crap from the toilet box, before fitting the new parts to prevent leaks.

Why am I even watching this? I've been fixing broken karzis for the last 30 years. I just wish most of mine came apart that easily. The bolts and and screws on most of my jobs are usually so corroded it's either a hacksaw blade with a cloth wrapped around it, a grinding disk on a Dremel Drill, or a whole new toilet.

Have you ever had the problem of when you fit the new domed sealing ring it sometimes leaves a gap from the bottom of the filling valve thread and the water inlet pipe, mainly caused because the new sealing ring is brand new and not compressed like the old one.
Even after tightening down on the wing nuts it doesn’t close the gap enough to allow the water inlet to be screwed back onto the filling valve neck.
Any tips on what to use to bridge the gap?
    Cheers 🍻

I've just done one of these close coupled toilets with a similar situation. I'm not a plumber but what I used was a foam close couple doughnut washer. Expensive for what they are (less than a fiver) but certainly gets round the issue of the cistern not going down enough. Other than that Screwfix do a fairly slim silicone close couple doughnut washer as well for a couple of pounds. I have found either of these to be effective with no leaks first time! More importantly no call backs......Hope that helps in some way.

Would best practice when removing cistern not be to leave taking the screws holding it to the wall out last? Then you’re not putting any pressure on the water or the coupling to the toilet? That’s how I do it but I confess I may not have a clue what I’m on about. Most of what I do know about plumbing has come from this channel…

I had a leak from a raised cistern. Thought it would be a nice easy job..
Arrived and the cistern was hanging off of the wall because the screws had rusted out. No isolation to the water supply just to the toilet, had to turn off to whole house and fit one. But the supply pipe was behind the back of kitchen base unit.
Disconnected everything and the pan wobbled. Screws had rusted out on that as well because of a slow leak on the pan connector which had been siliconed to hell.
After a lot of cleaning and a heater in the room for a few hours, I could put the thing back together with a new fill valve (was old and everything else was being replaced) and new flush valve with built in overflow, new pan connector. Porcelain was the only original thing there 🤣
