My dad passed earlier this year and he was a plumber. My toilets been acting up and all I have wanted to do was call him. Thank you for this, it means more than you will ever know.
I’m sorry that your father passed. I’m proud that my father became a computer software worker and I’m 23 now. I chose to go the route of trades like this. I’ve worked in electricity, plumbing, carpentry and landscaping. I’m glad I can help my family with these things
Same hear, Jack of all trades too; My Dad left in Aug of last year. So My condolences to ya bro. Only one thing to do.....we have to pick up the legacies of our Fathers!!!
Thank you, Roger. I had to troubleshoot a leaking toilet and watched your video to troubleshoot. I fixed it and thank you so much. I am an 81 yr old woman....and I got it done!
Not to be cliche but my dad's been incarcerated for a long time, he'd kill to be able to show me these little things. I just bought a house built in 1926 that was last updated in the 70's-80's and I'm having to do all the little things you'd expect. Channels like this are not only saving me a lot of money but they're also helping me build life skills that i can carry with me forever. I appreciate what you do.
I am a 62 year old woman Who does not know anything about plumbing. Because of you I have installed a toilet pump and saved paying Close to $200. Thank you so much
I fixed my toilet in literally 2 minutes after weeks of listening to it run every 8 to 10 minutes or so!!! Thank you so much for the clear and precise walk through for trouble shooting! It was The diaphragm in the fill valve. I rinsed it off and put it back 🙂
Thank you so much for making my toilet simple! My upstairs toilet has been the bane of my family’s existence for about a year now, but I literally just followed your troubleshooting and got it to stop its random flowing pattern in minutes. This was awesome. No trips to the hardware store or anything!
Success. I'm a single momma/home owner and this video gave me the courage to fix my toilets!!! Thank you coach, I didn't have the courage until you pumped me up!!!! God bless you. I don't have the extra $$ for a plumber and you demonstrated it perfectly. Thanks for the help.
Me too Crystal! All I did was pull out the full valve and put it back in WOW I just saved myself over $100. I'm so proud of myself and I fixed my loose toilet seat 😊🤗 Thank you Roger
This is priceless! I’m a mom struggling to put my son through college without him taking out any loans and I didn’t have money for a plumber. Thank you so much for posting this! My toilet needed fixing for a year and I just did it myself. I’m forever grateful! 🙌🏽
HUGE thank you for this tutorial! My toilet has been running for months and I had no clue what to do. After watching this, I turned the water off and figured out that the flapper was distorted and not laying flat. It cost me less than $10 to get a new one, which I was able to swap out in less than 5 minutes. This video was extremely helpful!
These videos (and this overall formatting) is absolutely incredible. Cutting the back out of that tank was an awesome idea. I'm a student living in one of those overpriced housing complexes where "everything's included" and my toilet's been running for a little while (about every 5-10 min or so; you can hear the drips leading up to the sudden rush of water). The maintenance guy's a schmuck who doesn't know a socket from a screwdriver, so I repair virtually everything that goes wrong in the apartment myself (besides HVAC work involving anything more than condensate pan clearing and filter swaps). I just don't trust the guy to not make an absolute mess of the place. Anyways, this video helped me not only fix the issue, but it also broke-down the process of how these systems work on a level that, as an engineering student, I found really interesting. Thanks for the quality content. You really know your stuff AND seem to genuinely enjoy teaching people about it! Subbed!
My dad taught me many years ago how to do this. You have made a very detailed video with extra info about the diaphragm. Thank you for your video. Very informative and a great refresher. It has been over 2 decades since I have needed to do this and I appreciate the effort and detail you put into this. Excellent tutorial. The cutout was especially great for me to teach my kids. When they are grown with their own toilets to fix, I hope your videos are still around.
As a woman who has never been taught anything about home maintenance and has a less-than-cooperative landlord, every repair need fuels my panic. Thanks to your video, I cleaned a drain valve and replaced it with a new one! Happy new year ❤️
@ S Tagavilla Congratulations ! I changed my own cabin and engine filter in my car. I am very proud of it. This may be small things for some, but when you get it done your self it actually increase your self reliance, it's great to count on your self as much as possible I am about to work on this toilet project. Have a nice day 🎉🎉
You need to have a conversation with your landlord. As a tenant, you deserve to have repairs made in a timely manner. Don't let landlord attitude keep you from asking for what you need. I am a landlady, and when they call, I'm on it the same day. Getting my rent and keeping my tenants is my priority, plus not relying on a tenant to try to fix what I am supposed to fix, with the result being they could do more damage by not doing it right, or the problem may be bigger than what the tenant thinks it is. Fixes need to be done right, and related issues need to be identified and fixed too.
THANK YOU so much for sharing this video. I am a single mom of two girls and money is always tight. I have watched a few other videos and they did not help solve the issue. I have been turning the water off and on the toilet at every flush for over a year! After watching your video, I was able to fix the problem all by myself! I am truly grateful!
Thank you so much for this video!! My problem was debris in the fill valve diaphragm. I did everything you said and I have passed Toilet Repair 101. Quite proud of myself !

Just a quick "thank you" for creating and posting this video. After watching your video, I was able to determine the cause of the problem and replaced the toilet fill value at a cost of just under $7.00. In a time like these when money is "tight", you saved me the cost of hiring a professional plumber...just the service call alone would have been $90.00 and that would not have included the part and installation charges. Thank you, kind sir!

I wanted to show off to my husband and install a bidet I bought on Amazon. It was challenging but got it done. Then the water kept running. I went to my trusted You Tube for help and this video popped up. It was great! His explanation was spot on! Problem solved. All set … and my husband is not even home yet from his errand. THANK YOU!!
Thank you! I just fixed my running toilet. I was dreading even watching this video. Thought it would be too complicated. But You explained how to do it so well I felt I could do it and I did.🙂

Great video! Thank you Roger for being so patient and understanding towards the people that don’t have your skills and would be ( roughly) paying around $150-300 (or possibly more in Naples, Fl) for a plumber to do this repair. Very good video! Very well explained!
You literally made me look like I know how to fix things around the house to my wife . She’s so impressed . It literally is as easy as you showed . Thanks 🙏🏽
Been listening to my main toilet run every 20 minutes for nearly two years. I’m embarrassed that it’s taking this long to finally fix it. Cleaned out the gunk and it did the trick! Thank you Roger!
Great video. You covered every possible solution for a tank that continues to run. I never replace the bottom portion of the fill valve assembly that is attached to the toilet with that nut underneath. I leave the bottom part attached to the toilet bowl and only replace the upper portion from the new valve assembly kit. You simply need to move that slip ring to get it the top part to release from the bottom part. The slip ring is what allows for changing the height adjustment on the valve. That way, I don’t need any tools, and I do not have to drain all the water out. I used to do the way you showed, until I realized that bottom portion does not wear out, nor does it ever clog up, and the dimensions for it has not been changed over the years, as long as you get the same version of fill valve for replacement. Chlorine is what eventually deteriorates the flapper. I changed out several toilets in 2017 to the one piece dual flush type from Home Depot. They use a tower with a circular flapper that last about five years. They are easy to replace, and no tools are needed. There are two sizes of towers, and both sizes come in the flapper replacement package. I really like the slow closing FluidMaster fill valve, because you do not have to worry about water hammer. Some of the older type fill valves shut the water off fast enough to create water hammer.
My toilet was running, at first on and off, then constantly. I found this video, replaced my fill valve as per the video’s instructions, and the toilet quit running! Great video... thank you!
Thank you for showing us these easy repairs! It helps show us what we as home owners and renters can fix ourselves and when we need to call in experts.
I had a squealing noise coming from my fill valve whenever there was a change in pressure and started watching your videos. I watched the one on a running toilet and saw how to check/change the diaphragm. I shut off the valve, released the pressure by pushing down on the float, twisted and removed the diaphragm valve, put it back on, and the squeal is gone. Thanks so much for what you do, you're a life saver.
Great help! After you showed me how to open the valve on top I was set. I didn’t drain the tank. Turned water off, dropped float, opened top of off valve. Sure enough, filled with grit. I used a compressed air can to blow the grit away. Worked perfect and now my toilet operates as it should! Thank you sir!
Single mom here and as I get my kids ready for bed tonight I hear my toilet running and I cannot get it to stop. I panic of course it’s a Sunday night and how am I going to get this fixed. I hop on UA-cam and find your video. You literally saved the day. Although my toilet is older, I was able to find the blockage near filter causing the issue. Thank you so much!!! You are awesome.
Thank you Roger. So glad this came up first when trying to figure out what's wrong w my toilet! My 28 yr old son swore the whole assembly had to be changed. I just cleaned out the flush valve, as shown, & now it's fine! Ha! Mom STILL knows best! 😉👍
Thanks to you and your video, it looked easy enough to tackle on my own. I bought the valve replacement and installed it. A little messy but overall pretty simple. You saved me $100-200 and I am grateful for your clear instructions. I'm in my 70's and so happy to DIY it.
Thank you so much Sir! My valve was a little more complicated than lifting and turning to release it, but your video gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to proceed and figure it out. After the valve was removed, I found a small chunk of rust that was preventing it from sealing fully. Removed that, reinstalled, problem solved! I thought for sure I would have to go to the hardware store and hope that I bought the right replacement valve assembly. Not necessary now.
Simple and easy and to the point. Thank you. I finally got to the point where having to turn the water on and off annoyed me enough to fix the thing. This vid made it easy to repair. Thanks
The back cut of the tank is a great idea - homeowners can clearly see what is inside. the fill valve and how to disconnect was a good tip. Last time around I replaced the full fill valve without knowing just the rubber washer cleaning would have done it. Thanks for the great tips - shows why you are an expert plummer and with a heart to help others 🙂
Had to replace my fill valve unit as the float was taking on water causing it to not shut off. Super quick and easy. Took less than 10 minutes and only $15! Thank you for this video!
This was supremely helpful, thank you so much. I've been listening to the toilet run for over a week, delaying having to call the plumber due to low funds. Much gratitude.
I literally just finished going to get a new fill valve, and replacing the old one after watching this video. Haha. Cost me about $20. Thanks very much, Roger.
I am so happy that I found this video. I’m a former soldier from the British military, then when I came out of the military, I went into the corporate world of banking and finance, and then I became a coach. I relocated from last year from Germany and took over my family house in the Caribbean, and both of my toilets were playing up with continuous running water, and the fill valve would not deactivate. I was panicking, thinking that this was going to be horrendously expensive to be repaired, and at worst, I may even need two new toilets. However, I found this video. I watched it and said to myself, “that’s too complicated for me I would never be able to do that”. Two days later, I thought “what could go wrong”? So step-by-step, I followed your instructions and hey presto, I have two perfectly functioning toilets, flushing better than ever. Thank you so much for your guidance, please continue making videos giving such a value and I will make sure I share this on my corporate page.
I bought one of those “universal” flappers, because the store didn’t have the brand for my toilet. Well, it helped somewhat but I could still hear the toilet running. So I went to a plumbing supply and bought the flapper made for my toilet. That fixed it 100% quiet.
Loved your video. The way you explained everything was very easy to follow. You were so clear and precise with your instructions. I was just about to go and buy a new fill valve for my running toilet but decided to view your video first. I am so happy that I did. I took the time to check and clean the diaphragm in the flush valve as you instructed and put it everything back together. After I refilled the tank and flushed it, no more running water. I fixed the problem in less than 10 minutes. I am so happy and thankful that my toilet doesn't run anymore. Thank-you so much for taking the time to post the video and share this tip. Have a blessed day 🙂
Thanks because I am a widow and it is had to find a honest plummer while living on a fixed-income, thank you and may Jehovah God continues to Bless you and your family.
Perfect, thank you! That is exactly my fill valve, my problem was indeed debris on that washer and the fix a simple cleaning. And that cutaway tank view is what sets your channel apart!
Thanks for the exceptional very helpful video. You inspire confidence and I appreciate that you are so very on the professional format, even going so far as to cut the back out of a toilet to make it easier to understand. Maximum points and a super job Master Plumber. We could use you in Florida! :)
Thank you! It is 1 am, saw it was leaking, I guess they shut off water during a day and valve got air. You must of save a lot of people and headaches!!! God bless you man!!!
Hi Roger! My toilet is running, and after checking it out I realized when I push down on the fill valve float it stops running. I also noticed that water is leaking from the top of the diaphragm valve, but once I push down on the float it stops leaking. Would the fix be adjusting the float or do I need a replacement? Thank you in advanced!!!😊
This grandfather is so great, you teach me a lot of things through your videos, in Canada I am doing freelancing plumbing work. Whenever I need to learn something i always watch your videos. ❤❤❤❤ Thanks for the videos
Thanks Roger! For someone who has a tenuous relationship with his man card, I found it very easy. Now it stops running after about a minute. I did your suggestions and also tightened up the chain by a couple links.
I know this video is a year old, but I gotta say, it has been so useful! Because of it I was able to diagnose a running issue and I knew how to replace the flush valve without a huge mess! Thanks man! You saved us time, money, and gave me some handiness cred!
After totally taking apart my toilet I realized that the refilling sound was coming from my neighbors bathroom which shares a wall with mine. I'm debating whether or not I should go over and fix their toilet myself!
Thank you for your explanation, I started to check the parts and found that the chain attached to flapper was long , I made it shorter and now it works perfectly. Thanks again.
GUARANTEED but you didn't mention anywhere about a sticky float that makes your toilet keep running. If you did please tell the time in the video as I didn't see it. I also went to part 2 and did not see it there either.
I don't know why I doubted you but you have once again taught me something new and saved me great frustration! Had a plumber out earlier today and they had to remove the toilet. Turns out the gel they use in the bowl to solidify the water hadn't been completely flushed through the system. It was gunking up the flapper so it was stuck in the up position. Quick rinse with warm water and it's working fine again. And my fill and diaphragm valves got cleaned and looked over. Thanks!
Thanks for the insight. Seems I'm having to learn everything about plumbing without a husband. ☹️. Saving me money is worth everything though so thank you!!!
Hi Roger, I realize this is a 4 year old video but I hope you see this comment anyway. I looked at many "how to fix a running toilet" videos but none of their solutions worked. Your video is the only one that had the tip about taking out the diaphragm valve and giving it a rinse and a wash. I did that and it worked!!! Very grateful for your expertise and thank you so much for sharing.
HEY! We made a part 2 to this video, if your toilet is still running after this check out our update: ua-cam.com/video/2ex2GnTWUbs/v-deo.html
You do help me a lot and the problem is really those debris on the top, it saves me to change the whole thing, thank-you again
Thx for the detailed explanation.
Great vid helped a lot💯
I cut the back off of my toilet like you said to. How to I put the back of the toilet tank back together? It leaks out the back now.

I feel like this dude just jumped through my phone and fixed my toilet haha, thanks man. genuinely helped me a lot 🙏🏼
I love that!
Let me know if this video has helped you fix your toilet!
It worked!!!!!
My fill tube won't stay in the whole!
And my handle hits the porcillon tank cover. I have to leave the tank cover off!! Help
Roger Wakefield l fix it , thank you sir.
Buffy Cleaveland is it plastic or brass? Also is there a lot of slack in the chain?
Hello, How are you doing?
Thanks!
Thank you Roger. So glad this came up first when trying to figure out what's wrong w my toilet! My 28 yr old son swore the whole assembly had to be changed. I just cleaned out the flush valve, as shown, & now it's fine! Ha! Mom STILL knows best! 😉👍
How are you doing today?
My man !!! Thanks to this vid I fixed my issue-running valve. Lil sediment was stuck. Cleaned it and place it back. Everything works fine.
Thank you, Roger!
It's an awesome video tutorial making seemingly complicated thing so easy.
Glad you think so!
I just wanna say THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! Your video was so simple and easy to follow. Please don’t stop doing what you’re doing :)
You're the MVP of the day sir, excellent video. I adjusted my fill valve and my toilet stopped overfilling. Two Texas thumbs up here amigo!
@Ryan Keith I am so glad that I could help!
Thanks to you and your video, it looked easy enough to tackle on my own. I bought the valve replacement and installed it. A little messy but overall pretty simple. You saved me $100-200 and I am grateful for your clear instructions. I'm in my 70's and so happy to DIY it.
I had changed out the fill tank valve seal before, but you showed me how to change it even faster. Thank you. To God be the glory.
Thank you so much for your expertise and explaining it in an easy to understand way. I now have confidence to tackle the problem myself.
Thank you!!! Wife home alone fixing things!! So helpful and precise and straight to the point!!! No unnecessary information or talking! Love it!
@Candizzi did it work? That is the main thing. I am glad that you enjoyed it!
@@RogerWakefield Yes! It was the flapper!
My whole valve replacement cost $12.72. Cleaning the diaphragm led to a worse leak. You can't buy just the top valve assembly.
This was supremely helpful, thank you so much. I've been listening to the toilet run for over a week, delaying having to call the plumber due to low funds. Much gratitude.
Great video- great plumber please keep doing more videos like this. You are a great teacher
Hello
How are you doing today?
Roger, I had dirt in the flange. You saved me a trip to the store. Thank you sir. Greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Roger. This was exactly the level of information I needed to fix my running toilet. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! You were the first one to give me a solution that worked after looking through so many videos. You rock!
I literally just finished going to get a new fill valve, and replacing the old one after watching this video. Haha. Cost me about $20.
Thanks very much, Roger.
Circle that answers my other question. Thank you for watching, commenting, and subscribing I hope...
He’s a great teacher for the single moms that need to learn basic things like this !
@Lee B. The universal are worth trying but, they don’t always work... Glad I could help!
Thank you, great explanation. My 70 year old galvanized leaves sediment, cleaning out that pin did the trick!
Great video. Straight to the point, no long shots of you explaining your life story. I fixed my toilet in seconds thanks to your video.
Perfect, thank you! That is exactly my fill valve, my problem was indeed debris on that washer and the fix a simple cleaning. And that cutaway tank view is what sets your channel apart!
You're a godsend. Thanks for posting this.
Matt Celis were you able to fix your toilet? Did you subscribe so you can find me again?
This isn't even the kind of toilet I have, but I watched the whole thing anyway because Roger is just so likeable haha
Excellent explanation Roger. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome
Thank you, sir. I just had to clean the fill valve.
Thanks for the exceptional very helpful video. You inspire confidence and I appreciate that you are so very on the professional format, even going so far as to cut the back out of a toilet to make it easier to understand. Maximum points and a super job Master Plumber. We could use you in Florida! :)
You are so welcome!
Thank you! It is 1 am, saw it was leaking, I guess they shut off water during a day and valve got air. You must of save a lot of people and headaches!!! God bless you man!!!
When i am not making vids i am fixing something, you have just earned a new subscriber. Found you on Twitter. Toronto Canada
eh Joe Thank you sir! I will check you out.... How'd you find me?
@@RogerWakefield found you on Twitter 👍🤙
You might take apart the top and clean the diaphragm but, I am thinking replacement... Sorry. Let me know if that works.
Cleaning the diaphragm can lead to a worse leak. Buy the entire valve assembly and you won't be sorry.
This grandfather is so great, you teach me a lot of things through your videos, in Canada I am doing freelancing plumbing work. Whenever I need to learn something i always watch your videos. ❤❤❤❤ Thanks for the videos
Don't know how I feel about being called a grandpa...😂 but thank you and I appreciate you watching
Thanks Roger! For someone who has a tenuous relationship with his man card, I found it very easy. Now it stops running after about a minute. I did your suggestions and also tightened up the chain by a couple links.
Sir ...thank you so much...the longest part of the process was driving to Home Depot and finding the part. Probably 10 minutes of actual work.
Glad it helped!
What amazingly clear out instructions! I feel like I can tackle my toilet now.
Hello
How are you doing today?
I know this video is a year old, but I gotta say, it has been so useful! Because of it I was able to diagnose a running issue and I knew how to replace the flush valve without a huge mess! Thanks man! You saved us time, money, and gave me some handiness cred!
Just fixed mine by replacing the fill valve. Thanks to your suggestions, it went pretty smoothly. I'll be a new subscriber.
Please keep putting videos like this one out there.
@HOTH20 What kind of videos do you like most?
I literally just searched up "How to let your toilet know that you love it." cause I'm stupid and apparently this is the way, nice UA-cam.
We
I really like how you pronounce it "Tah-let". My older NY relatives say "Tur-let"
After totally taking apart my toilet I realized that the refilling sound was coming from my neighbors bathroom which shares a wall with mine. I'm debating whether or not I should go over and fix their toilet myself!
Bruh 😂
Thank you for your explanation, I started to check the parts and found that the chain attached to flapper was long , I made it shorter and now it works perfectly. Thanks again.
Single mom here, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
GUARANTEED but you didn't mention anywhere about a sticky float that makes your toilet keep running. If you did please tell the time in the video as I didn't see it. I also went to part 2 and did not see it there either.
You go $
I had a similar problem. Do yourself a favor and just replace the whole thing. I got one at Home Depot for $8. Took me less than ten minutes
Thanks!
I’ve done a thousand toilets. He did it exactly like I do.
Thanks for the insight. Seems I'm having to learn everything about plumbing without a husband. ☹️. Saving me money is worth everything though so thank you!!!
Love love 💘 this Video!! Very helpful with this Display!! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
If your Toilet is still Running, then you better run catch it, hehe (failed joke :)
Pov. You came here because you saw this in a dharr mann video
Thanks for sharing…I’m glad i could help you
Dear Roger,
You just saved my shitter.
Sincerely, your new friend for life.
I hear this often.
