I'm here a year later 2022, and left another comment just now (please see, I'm after advice).
I'm same as you with my mum.
Great that you did the job yourself. Well done! Although I've always done my own decorating etc and even fitted two new ceiling lights in the past, this job has got me worried. My toilet is the push button type and I don't know anything about plumbing.
Can't afford a plumber, I know I'll get ripped off (with only 2 weeks to go before Christmas 2022)🥴.

13:23 "The smooth goes to the bottom of the siphon". OMG THANK YOU! This is the fourth video I've watched on this subject and yours is the first one to include this small but vital piece of information.

Toilet decided to go and break a couple of days before Christmas! To avoid high call-out fees or a lengthy wait into the New Year I decided to see if I could fix the problem myself. I come across this video and it was great!! I’m a complete novice but I found Derek very easy to follow. I was able to replace the syphon on a close coupled toilet in under an hour, and that was taking my time and taking the opportunity to give the cistern a good clean behind it.
The replacement syphon cost a little under £7 and works perfectly. Thank you very much!

I've just fixed my toilet thanks to this video! Initially it was leaking from where the pipe enters the toilet itself. It's been like this for months if not years. I'd tried to seal it several times with only temporary success. I had no idea it was a simple as replacing a rubber fitting! Then, just recently, it's been getting more and more difficult to flush the toilet, until a couple of days ago it just became impossible. A quick UA-cam search and I found this video! Not only have I managed to get the toilet flushing again but I've also fixed the leaky flush pipe! What I will say is that the nut under the cistern needs to be done up stupidly tight. I kept having leaks until I did it up really REALLY tight. Total cost was less than £15, and that included the pliers I needed to buy as well! Thank you for your help 🙂

I just fixed my toilet thanks to you and this video. Excellent, thank you so much! There's no way we could afford a plumber, we do have insurance cover for such things but there's a £60 excess and considering I just fixed it myself for next to nothing, I can't thank you enough.

I saw a video where the design of the toilet required removing the whole cistern from the wall! I am so glad my toilet was like this video. Very easy to follow, job done in about 20 minutes. I was unable to remove the pipe due to bad design around the toilet, so used the old washers, but so far it hasn't leaked. Excellent.

I followed your instruction up to the baling out when I remembered that I have a 12v oil extractor pump lying around.

I'm literally doing this right now, following it step by step. The previous owner painted over inlet valve so I shut off the water completely. To get the water out of the cistern I used a McDonalds cup as they are more flexible and warn work socks, they'll get cleaned later. I'm now off to B&Q so I'll edit this later to let you know how it all goes.
    (A few hours later)
Toilet now flushes perfectly every time and no leaks. Thanks for the tutorial, if I can follow this anyone can.

A short piece of rubber hose, fill with water while holding a finger over bottom end - place in cistern and point into bowel at a point lower then the bottom of the cistern will create a vacuum and drain the water. Lot easier than using a cup.

replaced a diaphragm recently only to find that the flush was slow and fan like so wouldn't take solids, even paper away fully. Took pipe out of pan entry and found a large piece of the old one restricting flow, no wonder....VERY WORTH Checking when apart on replacement. Regards,

It went great....Turned the stop cock off, did the work...However as the stop cock hadn't been moved in 10 years it broke when I tried to turn it back on.
Had to call an emergency plumber to come out and turn the mains off and replace stop cock.
      Haha.
The siphon worked though and no leaks.

spot on! Now I know I can get the toilet to flush properly and I only need to change is the washer in the syphon (I'm tight). Hopefully It'll stop the long flappy pipe leading to the toilet behind the bath sounding like a trumpet when it's flushed too. Don't think it will, but we live in hope.
