2020 Yamaha MT-03 Review | Better Suspension | More Refined

  • Yamaha's 2020 MT-03 has followed in the footsteps of the R3 sportsbike, with an updated suspension system that is ideally tuned for everyday riding, alongside a styling overhaul, with a new headlight assembly and sportier tank and radiator/intake cowls.
    The popular 321cc twin-cylinder engine remains and still offers just over 30 kW, or 42 horsepower, while 30 Nm of torque is also on offer. Not class leading figures but the MT-03 has arguably the smoothest and most tactile engine character in the category, with a level of refinement and user friendly nature that's hard to match.
    Brakes are likewise simple systems, backed up by ABS, but offering plenty of performance for the light machine, weighing in under 170 kg. There's not crazy levels of bite, but the power is there and good modulation, meaning new riders won't be intimidated and it's all about control.
    A low 780 mm seat height and small proportions also makes the MT-03 an incredibly easy motorcycle to jump onto, while larger riders might find the MT-03 on the compact side. For me locking between the pegs and tank was easy and ideal, but I can see much larger or longer legged riders perhaps finding that a little cramped. However for shorter riders the reach to the ground is incredibly easy, which with the light overall weight makes for an easy to manage machine.
    Being a roadster or nakedbike the MT-03 also features wide bars and easy handling, with an agile and nimble character around town and through the twisties but with good stability at speed.
    Overall I highly recommend checking out the MT-03, it may not have switchable ABS, or knobbies, but that's because it's a road bike and those are well outside the scope of what you should expect.

    Kris, this is without a doubt the best review I’ve seen to date on this bike, I’m looking to get one as a 2nd bike to do occasional track days & twisty road riding, nice job!

    Love your videos because you show ergonomics!! How do other reviewers not do this?

      Thanks! There's always so much to cover, it can be hard to fit it all in, or to give everything the time it deserves.

    You're the first one I've heard saying the seat is good. I find it fits my ass well aswel. Give it the beans and she leaves out for sure. I got the green one. Awesome video. And as always
    I was entertained

      It definitely varies, it seems like weight, proportions and even gear can have an impact on seat comfort. Plus where you ride too probably, moving around on the bike in the twisties tends to keep you off the seat.

    When getting a naked bike keep in mind certain components will NOT be protected. Forked out extra $ for case covers for the engine, clutch, and water pump.
    Also added for protection 5 sliders types: fork, frame, bar ends, exhaust, rear area.
    Also worth mentioning, lack of fairing means more wind buffeting (in addition to no windscreen).

    • @grumpysquid
      @grumpysquid 3 роки тому +1

      Also added a radiator guard

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, great advice, especially for new riders! A bit of crash protection should definitely be a first thought, can reduce the cost of minor drops or offs, and keep important parts like engine cases, water pump and radiator in one piece, as damaging those is catastrophic if you're out in the middle of nowhere!

    Looks like a great update to a great bike! I was always too tall for the platform sadly, but it looks great. Here’s hoping they announce an mt07 update soon... and that it doesn’t retain the headlight lol. I defo feel that bike’s been a case of it sells so well they don’t feel like they really need to do much lol.
    Also yamaha: please please bring us a LAMS tracer lol

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, some bikes are definitely a victim of their own success, in that manner. The MT-07 must be due for an update, I think someone had some spy shots of an updated version that looked like it received a headlight more in line with the latest MT models.
      It looks like we lost out on getting a LAMS Tracer 700 when they updated it, but we also didn't get the full power version either.

    Nice review Kris and a nice ride up the Old Road! That bike would look so much better with a slip on (or does it have a one piece exhaust?).

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 роки тому

      It would! And luckily on these you can get a slip-on, which saves a bit of money.

    Had mine for a few months already. Lots of shifting because of low gearing. Averaging 53 MPG. 8500 RPM at 80 MPH, kinda buzzy. Last 2 gears are overdrive. Fun, zippy, nimble, light. Throttle is a long pull but forgiving. About 10 MPH and it demands/screams to shift into 2nd.
    Unique aesthetics. Cheap to maintain and insure. Low tier brakes and lever feel but decent and not crappy. If you taller than 5’9 don’t get this short height bike. 3/4 tuck and NOT full tuck stance. So-so seat over long rides.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  2 роки тому

      Yep it's just a textured plastic, not painted or colour matched. Similar to the headlight surround and tail areas.

    If I was after a 300 to 400 cc bike, it would be a single. The Duke 390 ideally, but the CB300R would have more low-down shove than this. Both these two bikes look miles better than the MT.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 роки тому +1

      The Honda 300s wouldn't have more low down shove, the Duke is definitely a bit meatier though.

    • @user-sw2lv3zp6o
      @user-sw2lv3zp6o 3 роки тому +1

      @@MotoJournoKris The 300R does, Chris. Almost 100 per cent of its torque is available at 5,000 rpm or half revs. That's quite something for a single.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 роки тому +4

      @@user-sw2lv3zp6o It's certainly impressive for a little single, but the same is true of the MT-03 as well.

    I've heard the slipper clutch on that Kawasaki Z400 is a nightmare. Wearing out clutches every 2,000 miles. I think it's good this bike doesn't have that

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  2 роки тому

      The clutch issue on the 400s has gotten a bit of attention, but seems to be a fairly limited issue, so hard to say if only some bikes were effected or if the lightness of the clutch may have seen some riders riding it or not adjusting it properly, causing very premature wear. I think there was some updates from the 2020 versions too, that offer more wear on the clutch plates before it issues arise.
