  • In the US, the MT (Masters of Torque) lineup has consisted of the MT-07, MT-09, and MT-10. For 2020,‪@YamahaMotorUSA‬ has brought the MT-03 over as well. Based on the YZF-R3, the newest (and littlest) MT is approachable and affordable, at just $4,599. Is it the new best bargain in motorcycling?

    Just bought one of these two weeks ago. I absolutely love it. At 5'4", 150lbs, it is a perfect fit for me. I've been riding for over twenty years and it's usually meant compromising by riding something a bit too big for me and just living with it. This is the perfect package. Coming from an older 1983 Honda Nighthawk CB650SC this doesn't feel like a downsize at all. The smaller bikes are so much more powerful these days than the Ninja 250, etc., of yesteryear. 42hp at 370-ish pounds is definitely good enough for this guy. I don't need a 100hp to have fun. Riding a super fast bike slow, at the speed limit, isn't nearly as fun as winding out a smaller bike without breaking the speed limit too much.

    My first viewing of one of your videos and I congratulate you on a job well done. I like your style. I've owned a 2015 R3 for three years and still love it. I have a 2006 Honda Shadow Sabre VT1100C2 cruiser as well and it's a kick in the pants to go between the two. The R3 is so incredibly nimble and spirited, while the cruiser is my go to for highway and longer rides when I just want to watch the scenery go by (while also watching the road ahead, of course!). Oh, and I owned and rode a 2015 FZ-07 for a year before I decided to try the cruiser. The latter are so plentiful on the used market that I may pick up a more current model one day, since Yamaha improved the suspension.

      Thanks for the feedback. So if I had the choice of a 2019 Z400 or 2020 MT 3 @ $3999, Which should I go for and why?

    • @Bikeurious
      @Bikeurious  4 роки тому +3

      @@twowheelingtom Damn, that's a great price!
      So if you can get either for the same cost, the primary differentiator is your size. If you're 6 feet or taller, the tank of the MT-03 will get in the way of your thighs. I'm 6'2", and I only got to ride the MT-03 for a few hours but the tank is almost a dealbreaker for me. Someone below said that the MT-03 is a "perfect fit" for them at 5'4", for what it's worth.
      If both bikes are comfortable for you (and again, you're getting them for the same price), then I'd go with the Z400. It's faster, smoother, roomier, has bigger/better front brakes, and it's still 10 pounds lighter.
      Here's another way to look at it: both bikes are basically naked versions of the Ninja 400 and the YZF-R3. Well, the Ninja was a completely new design for 2018, while the new R3 is an evolution of a design that dates back to 2015. The Z400 is just a bit more sophisticated. I haven't had a chance to ride the Z400 and the MT-03 back to back yet, but here are my thoughts on the sportbike versions if you're interested: www.bike-urious.com/2019-kawasaki-ninja-400-vs-2019-yamaha-yzf-r3/
      Hope that helps! Feel free to email me if you have specific questions: abhi@bike-urious.com

    Excellent review Bike-urious, thank you, love your speed and clarity of delivery and the music is VERY cool. I'm in Australia, 5' 6" / 28" in seam and considering 'down-sizing' from (don't laugh) a 2016 BMW R1200R roadster. Yes the BMW surely is motorcycling nvirana, dare I say perfection and easily the best motorcycle I've ever owned but, in reality, WAY more motorcycle than I will ever need. Having fun on that is ALWAYS a potential licence shredder - and at 60+ age, I now don't need to go 200 kph plus.
    As many say, it's much more fun to ride a slow(er) bike fast than a fast bike slow. And I'm told light bikes are just a joy to use, especially when coming down from 240kg/500lb behemoths to ~170kg/370lb light(er)weights - that's around 3 bags of cement difference in weight right there. It seems from all I have seen and read the MT03 could actually be the road-going "Swiss-army knife" of motorcycling and a very excellent all-rounder. It's clearly a competent, comfortable, faithful and fun commuter, but also seems able to do freeways /touring adequately?? Any thoughts on that? If it can happily cruise all day at 110-130kph then I think that will be all I need. Thanks again for a very informative and engagingly delivered review. Keep up the great job and nice job Sir!

I would prefer a KTM 390 duke but I was in a rush to get something for summer and this was available and I'm very satisfied just got a Yoshimura exhaust today in the mail along with a Yoshimura fender eliminator, throw a couple sliders on there and I'm good to go....I get compliments all the time with this bike... I’m picking up my Z400 in two weeks. It will be the replacement for my stolen CB500F. Financially wasn’t looking for an upgrade and just want to make sure I’m back on the road this season. Bike-urious I’ll try to remember to return with comments about how they compare. I loved my 2017 CB500f, had 17000km on it. Very similar power between the CB and the Z, so I’m interested to see how the lower weight changes the experience once I’m putting kms on it. I didn’t ride the new 500X, it seems nice but not the style I was looking for, and not a fan of the newer CB500F changes even though they aren’t drastic from my 2017. Probably would have bought a Z if it had been available in 2017 as my first bike. Didn’t want a 300 but the 400 has stepped it up.

      Thanks, Khem!
      I assume you're referring to the Rebel 300? It's tough to answer that question without knowing what kind of riding you want to do, but my gut reaction would be the MT-03. Those are two great choices and they're priced very similarly, but they have very different riding positions. I don't care for the feet-forward style of cruisers like the Rebel, the MT-03 is a bit sportier and I prefer that. Plus the Rebel makes a little less than 30 horsepower while the MT-03 makes just over 40. Good luck with whatever you choose!

    • @Bikeurious
      @Bikeurious  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Jeremy,
      No, I don't think so. I'm struggling to think of one situation where I'd want the MT-03 over the MT-07 - the former might be more comfortable for a smaller person, but even then the 07 is still quite manageable. Are you on the fence between the two bikes?

  • @RTmurdock

      well as a first bike I would recomend the 03 but given how tall you are the 07 sure is more confortable, also more dangerous for a beguinner. In the 300-500c naked class I think the Duke390 is the tallest but the safest bet for tall people like you will always be the touring/adventure bikes, like the CB500X for example

      I'm not quite as tall, so I'm not sure fit would be an issue.
      Any tips for a new rider trying on bikes at a dealer? I'm not sure if I'd gloss over something (like someone reviewing one of the two bikes was mentioning a ridge on the gas tank being just in the wrong place for their knee) which would be more important some time down the road.

    • @NobodyWhatsoever
      @NobodyWhatsoever Рік тому

      @@Bikeurious That's sort of a yes and no. It's a long story, boiling down to basically ...
      No, the people I know who already ride a motorcycle aren't the kind of rider I'd want to be. And I do have a friend who wants to get his first motorcycle in a long, long time, but he's glued to vintage bikes rather than modern (which is perfectly fine, and you'd probably also love some of the bikes he's been looking at with a family member who repairs them as a hobby -- gorgeous beasts). So, I'm basically going it alone. My plan is, whatever I buy as a first motorcycle this summer, I'm bringing it home on a trailer, and probably taking some late night rides after work for a bit to get better.

    no one ever needs the horn so better place it somewhere you wont accidentially hit it.... btw. wasn't it honda who was the one manufactuer that places it differently? no idea since i only rode yamaha and honda so far and yamaha horn placement is standard for me.

    • @Bikeurious
      @Bikeurious  4 роки тому

      Nate, thanks for watching! 2 things:
      1.) I vehemently disagree with you that "no one ever needs the horn", sorry. You've never used your horn? I've used mine plenty over the last couple of decades, and it's saved me more than once. I also know I'm not close to being alone in this case.
      2.) You're absolutely right about Honda - they recently changed the position of the horn on their bikes, and I think it was a very dumb decision. As I mention in the video, if it's your only bike, you'll get used to quickly, but if you've been riding for years or if you have multiple motorcycles, it causes a problem that shouldn't exist.
