In this video, I install the TRD Cold air intake into my Toyota 4Runner. This CAI will work with any 2010+ FJ and 4Runner. The install was decently easy. There are a few steps that I wish Toyota did a littler more R&D. The throatiness is not as loud as the S&B CAI that I had prior to this. Long term testing to come. Thank you for watching!

Thank you TRD Jon!!! Great video........made it a super EASY swap from stock to TRD on my 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner........ it fits perfect!!
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to updates about it!
Will do!!
Love it Jon, I hope you get sounds like you had on the previous Cold Air. Keep up the Videos!!
I do too!!
Thanks Russell!!!
Now THAT is a clean install!
Thanks!!!!
Thanks Jon for the informative and honest opinion.
Always
MUCH BETTER for the one ENGINEERED for that vehicle!!!!
Nice! I have a 2016 Quicksand TRD Pro. Looking to get one. Thanks, Jon!!
Great posts Jon! I just bought (last night) a 2023 TRD Off-Road and ordered the Pedal Commander today on your review. I'd like to go with the cold air intake also. I had cold air on the car I traded in and it was great. I do want to stick with OEM stuff because of the crazy SMOG rules here in California. It was hell getting my car tested because the intake was for a different model Infiniti. BUT... the same engine and mostly everything. Had to swap back and forth every 2 years. Sucked! I might want to have the dealer put it on my TRD just to make sure I don't go through that crap again.
This might come in the springtime ! But I just ordered a banks pedal monster. I have had no issues with the Pedal Commander yet but I see the Banks has some very nice features, low speed trim and reverse. So I'll sell the commander and someone will get a deal. Intake will be on the Wish List !
Thank you man, the black and white directions don’t hold a candle to this video!
Thanks!
@@TRDJon The sound of mine did not sound any different. This is probably my 4th or 5th CAI I’ve put on a vehicle.
"Sounds like" they should throw that
S&B CAI right back to you. Looking forward to a follow up.
Yea this TRD didn’t have much sound to it at all. Will see with my long drive tomorrow
Can’t wait till u get a review back on it
Thanks for all the info always
No worries!!
I have a tundra now but my favorite engine of all time was that 4.0!!! Usable power all the way through in a Tacoma 6 speed manual!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Whenever you get time, I’d love to see a video of you washing the entire car, including the engine bay and all the products used. I’ve seen the OG video of how to clean those tough rims but would love a full wash and products
I’ll do that when it cools down for sure. Would love to now but tooooo hot to mess with a camera.
@@TRDJon in short jean shorts, no shirt lol
@@TRDJon hi any check engine light after driving with the TRD intake????
Looks good man nice job
Thanks 👍
Honestly, I like mine but that airbox is a head scratcher! I never feel 100% that it's sealed. However, mine does sound good. Not loud but definitely an improvement. Thanks for all the vids!
Thanks for the info! Can't wait to drive it today
Awesome video! Thank you
Thanks man!
Intro is amazing 😂😂😂
hahahah thanks!!!!!
Great video as usual. I finally installed the same TRD Cold Air Intake. So far so good. I feel a little more hp. Will monitor the fuel econ, ok, take care!
You as well!!!
What year 4Runner?
@@highvoltagemaverick 2018
Whats the fuel like since you installed it
@@missilefool About the same. No drastic change.
Looking forward to your review on the TRD CAI. Put one (not TRD obviously) on my old JK and loved both the growl and the fuel savings that resulted. Now I'm wondering if the same can be realized on my T4R.
I loved the growl that’s the s&b had. Gonna have a long drive with it tomorrow.
Love your content, 3rd gen owner myself. Only constructive criticism if I may so is. I understood everything because I would consider myself what people call a "car guy" 😅, so I could follow along. But some viewers aren't. love the content as i said before but being more technical can teach ppl who don't know as much and bring in a larger crowd to your channel. I'm totally showing support, I just hope you can understand what I'm saying and not take it like I'm hateing. Ppl learn off UA-cam so much that you can become that much more valuable as a video in the "YT world". I've said too much already tho. Comments shouldn't be this long lol
Nothing but peace,love and prosperity.
Love the video man,
-Flohec
I get that! No worries! I try to blend it as well as possible, easy for car dudes to understand and put some more technical info (like for the MAF) in as the harder parts. I just hate making loooooong vids.
@@TRDJon I've never edited a video so if you hate making long videos knowing how to edit them. I probably would too lol. Appreciate you replying back too man.
A fan of your content.

Great vid,, 👍 thanks! I know that some people do a hack by ripping out the carbon filter. Do you think that would help performance, sound?
Excellent
I went the other route and just purchased the trd filter alone. Im satisfied with it. I am curious if there is any actual difference between the 2. I will be looking forward to your review of it. Thanks for the vid Jon!
Would have been a great comparison too.
I see you have a rav4 also?? Nice, we also have all toyota in the family.. I was looking on adding a super charger to the 4runner, and adding a cold air intake to the rav4 from K&N..
Great video, thanks. Just followed your vid to do my install. I noticed the top cover doesn't exactly completely seal - I can still see the edge of the red filter between the top and bottom cover. Did your top cover close and seal completely? Looks like some dust may be able to get into the box? Thx
Just ordered the AEM dry flow to put in the stock box. I wish just the TRD lid would fit on the old box base.
Hey Jon. Do you know where I can get the air flow accelerator that comes with the TRD Intake? I got one from my uncle but it’s missing the flow accelerator and I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
I'm thinking about adding the TRD exhaust and cold air intake to 2021 4Runner SR5 Premium. Is it really worth it?
How does this compare to the S&B Intake you had? I had the same 4runner and did S&B and now I have a '21 lunar rock and trying to decide between S&B or this TRD one. Thanks
Will this work with a 2020 4Runner Venture? I had to remove the Volant one I purchased because it kept tripping my check engine sensor. Their tech support stated...
Jon, I'm going to be adding an ARB dual compressor in the rear passenger corner of the engine bay and a TJM Airtek snorkle to my 2019 Offroad. Do you think there will be an issue with these mods and the TRD cold air intake? I'm not liking the loose lid lock up on the TRD cold air intake that you highlighted. I'm anxious to see your 150 mile review. Thanks for the informative content.
No issue at all with fitment. It is about the same as the stock box. Will do and keep you updated!
so this is your second intake you placed. which is better ? is it worth it? you seemed to really like the first one and was blah about the TRD
Hello jon those nets aren't on the market right now so what will we be replacing(TRD FILTERS)
Appreciate the video, nice job! Will this work on a '22 TRD Sport?
Yes it will
Currently installing on my 2016 TRD Pro. Did you skip the “tree mount zip tie” part, as well as installing the provided bracket? Looks like it’s just to secure some wiring around MAF, but curious to know what others thought / how y’all approached that. Thanks!
Correct. I feel like that was a step for the FJ Cruiser. honestly.
Seeing the flat paper filter makes me glad that I went with the AFE big ass cone filter, that's literally just a stock airbox with fancy red couplers
But it is so fancy!!!!!!
@@TRDJon Hell yeah man, and that red TRD sticker adds like 5 HP on it's own lol
I liked the intro and you should do more like that! I also have question that you might be able to answer for me. The TRD pro exhaust that you put on a couple months ago. Would that fit my 2016 TRD pro?
Yes, it will fit.
Thanks!!! And yes it will
The intro is interesting, as in how can I save $100? I have no idea of the list of parts needed, granted one is paying for convenience. However, $100 is $100.
I am dying laughing over here at the intro alone!!!
Success!!!
@@TRDJon Do you lose any bottom end with the cai? Im just wondering if it throws things off, I see that urd makes a maf calibrator for mods like these, not sure if things settle after a few hundred miles when the ecm isn't "fresh" from the battery disconnect. Thanks!
(Used air raid on the way, I noticed you have reviewed a couple, maybe that one too? Just trying to get general idea if any downsides )
Not that I’ve noticed. I’ve heard that URD calibration is awesome too
@@TRDJon Thanks
Hi there Jon i just came across your video and i wish i could install the same TRD CAI in my 4th gen V8 4runner i wonder if you know any link you may recommend for the 4th gen owners thanks.
Nice 4runner btw
Thanks! I don't. I/ve been looking for my 4.7 tundra as well.
Do you prefer the S&B or the TRD pro CAI ?
Hey, I have a 22 4R TRD Pro, this doesn't effect the warranty since its OEM? I know they don't list this as a part for the 22 so I was just wondering...
With regards to the filter... what is the part number of the replacement you use? Thanks!!!
Do you have sound clip of "The growl" from the previous intake? I know, random...
Just in those vids still
What is the part number for these part? I couldn't find it in the description.
Hey John! It has been 3 years on this video of TRD CAI gone into your 4 Runner. I didn't see any update on how it performs in your videos list in youtube. Please let us know how its holding up. Especially the inside of the tube to the engine, is it dust free like it was on S&B? Curious to know.
Been great! Super cleean for sure and great throttle response still
So with this CAI, which one do you prefer. Was MPG was better with the S&B? What if any change with MPG have you realized with the TRD CAI? Looks good, just curious as to what you've found. Thanks
Both about the same. Like the s&b growl more
Jon, question about the main box. Does the top "rest" on the hinges, or is it connected? I had Longo Toyota install mine. I can see a little red (filter) on the side. I've had it for a year with no issues. It will be a pain in the ass to take off clips, etc. The front clip hold it down well, as since it's connected, it ain't going anywhere. Just curios if it need to be in the plastic thing or sit on top. Your video @4:55.
Should sit on top and still be sealed
@@TRDJon Ok, thanks!
Will this fit a 2022 4Runner Off Road Premium? PTR03-89100 correct part number? Best place to order from? Thanks!
Yes it should
What's inside the box? Regular like it was before? 🤔
Where did you get those lights? That's cool when you start it up
These are by Alpharex.
nice job , but why you need this , for sound ? or better millage ? or for better performance speed boost etc ?
Should be for all those
Did the kit you bought from BAM wholesalers come with the filter as well? I’m doing my research on which way to go. Part by part or whole kit. If the filter does come with the kit then the price is similar if you just bought it part by part.
Yes it did
Does it fit my 4runner 2015? Thanks
Is that actual rectangular TRD filter the same size as the stock one or a K&N one? That wasn’t exactly what I was expecting to see - but probably better. I thought it might be like a cone type filter. I think I would like to do that with my 2016 Limited which currently has a K&N filter in it. Could you use a stock Toyota filter or a K&N filter if you had to, for some reason?
Nope just like a drop in high flow. Unfortunately not a come
Are they the same size?
Not sure what changed but I had this same set up on my 2010 and 2014... the 2010 sounded great and you felt it, but 2014 had zero sound or performance change
Is it the same look? Maybe different filter?
Same everything...2010 limited and 2014 trail premium.. but both intakes were same trd CAI... the 2010 had a more distinct sound and the 2014 had zero change in tone or pick up
Hello, I think I am ready to take the plunge, and get the TRD CAI, you mentioned a way to save $100 by getting the parts of the intake. I was wondering if you had a parts list?
I don't I'm sorry. But Bamswholesale shows all the separate parts.
On the Bam wholesalers link you provided (and also every Toyota parts online store) says this doesn’t fit my 2020 4R TRD Pro
It will
Rev the piss out it lol. Quick question, think it will fit my 2021 4Runner limited?
Is the oem air box the same exact size as the trd? I’m piecing mine together and I don’t really care for the trd branded cover
It’s different for sealing I believe
#justworkitin
Jon, what’s the increase in HP w the exhaust and air intake? Combined and if done independently of each other? Did it help w towing. Btw great info on the channel! Thx Josh
Not much but alot better throttle response.
I have one in mine and I have a whistle between 1800 and 2100 rpm. I’ve been told it’s air moving through the throttle body but not everyone gets it. Can be a little annoying.
I have it too. Very seldom
@@TRDJon did you find it was where the rubber grommet went in where there was still an opening. I saw another video where the guy used silicone. Thought?
Just installed my TRD intake yesterday also! The only problem was it had the k&n intake in it before and the person that installed it didn’t keep the oem rubber grommets and metal sleeves... and Toyota does not sell them at all. It has been such a headache trying to find a solution.
What did you do??
TRD JON THANKFULLY I’m cool with one of the service advisers at my local dealership and he said if I sold him my k&n for a decent price that he would give me the grommets and sleeves off his oem. I was VERY thankful or else I would have been doing some makeshift work. Haha phew
Does the TRD CAI give enough room for a secondary battery
Yes it will, no larger than the OEM box. Maybe like a in more if that.
Hey Jon which cold air intake system provided best MPG increase?
It kinda evened out but the s&b probably was better by a little.
I know this video was produced roughly a year and a half about, but I was wondering if this TRD kit will fit out 2019 4runner. I am new to the 4runner, and am trying to do my homework. I live in California and an only about 3mi for S&B, but they cannot sell me a CAI as it is not CARB compliant. I called a local Toyota dealer and spoke with them and they were telling me the same thing I keep finding on the internet, and that is that this kit will not fit out 19 4runner. I am guessing that a '19 4runenr is a 5th gen. can you confirm that please. I would greatly appreciate it. And, thanks for the video's very informative.
Yes it will fit
Why did you replace the aftermarket S&B? I'm really wondering. Did it not work as advertised?
Not it was great, they just havent had them in stock for months so I switched it up for people looking for a product in stock.
@@TRDJon I was going to ask the same thing! Thanks for all the info, I'm looking forward to installing whichever CAI I can get my hands on!
Ok, what do you think?
Should I buy the TRD AIR SET UP for my 2020 4Runner?
Or what do you suggest?
I've enjoyed it so far.
Have you taken out the airfilter for cleaning since the installation?
I read that the plastic hinges of the airbox are brittle and easy to break…
I have and haven't had an issue.
@@TRDJon Do you prefer TRD or the S&B CAI?
Hey, do you run catch can on your 4 runner, and do you recommend it for the price
I do not
why didn't toyota just take the OEM box design with the clamps rather than that awkward angle of the plastic hinges lol
No idea! Honestly kinda frustrated with it. Not as good of a seal as the OEM in my opinion.
TRD JON yeah i agree jon. The stock ones have a pretty damn good seal. I think I’ll be scooping up a S&B one whenever those are back in stock.
For sure a great choice!
Where you buy?
So if you lose the prominent growl with the old CAI, and assuming the MPGs are roughly equivalent...explained to me what substantial improvement in overall performance you expect to get out of this install. I was just getting ready to buy one, but now I’m on the fence. I’m really curious to hear your overall impression, especially compared to the S&B.
I’ll have a long drive tomorrow to feel it out. If all is the same minus growl, then I’d go for the s&b. I really liked the growl. Even at lower RPM’s. I just haven’t drove it yet. It started POURING rain
There is a fairly loud growl i think, but only when you give it a bit. Which is nice because the wife doesnt know im modding the truck so she cant tell as long as I dont really get on it
I had this CAI installed on my 4Runner and could not stand the noise, no change to gas mileage or engine power. Could not wait to put the stock intake back on.
That’s weird cuz I hardly hear anything out of it
@@TRDJon noticed it the most driving in the mountains, especially higher revs either climbing steep grades or accelerating in passing lane. Normal driving it was not bad.
Mmmmm I can see that. That is when the exhaust is loud too
That intro 🤣
It was fun to make haha
@@TRDJon I was cracking up bro
😂😂
is the TRD suppose to be better than the S&B?
Same concent, not sure if it wall stand out as alot better.
Will that TRD intake fit on a 4Runner 2020 SR5?
Yes
What was wrong or you didn't like about the S&B cai?
Nothing. They just had stopped making it
Is someone playing the maracas in the background?
Looks like a colorful noise maker... that's about it.
did you like the TRD or Sand B better?
S&B due to the sounds
Does the TrD cold air intake work on 2021 TRD off Road Premium?
Yes
@@TRDJon I read you need to open up the wire harness (electrical tape) the MAP wire is in so it can reach. Did you need to do this on your install? Toyota says there is not trd cold air intake compatible with the 2021. I’m wondering if that’s the only reason why
no tune required? for air ratio purposes?
No but you can do a MAF calibration is desired.
Website say not fit 2020-2021. is this true?
It will fit
What is the estimated HP gain?
Not sure, Toyota only mentions that it helps with low end.
Which cold air intake did you like more and why?
The sb more sound
@@TRDJon would you say the sb is better than the Momentum GT?
I never used that one so I wouldn’t know
Have you tried an aftermarket throttle body spacer?
have not
So this will fit a non trd model as long as it’s 4.0?
Correct
@@TRDJon thanks for replying!
Well looks like that CAI may not be on for long😂
Especially if S&B ever comes back out with a version.
You probably not losing as much hp as the S&B, you could put a reed in the tube and make it whistle for more noise
How did the s&b loose HP?
@@TRDJon if you can hear it.... turbulence is not helping Toyota stopped selling the CAI and just sells the filter for a reason. Real world dyno by guys not selling the CAI always show near zero. a better air fitler will get what ever micro gain is real, and thats what toyota still sells. Its great to see Toyota give real bang for the buck, and not grab for dollars
Hmmm never thought the sound would mean it lost power. Cuz I’ve put in a drop in air flow into my truck before and it was a lot louder as well. Felt better throttle wise too to drive.
@@TRDJon on jeep forum guys are feeling power increases from oil catch cans and claims of better gas mileage (lol). I had one 20 years ago on a musclecar, made noise, no real difference on track times. Dyno guys did typically got nothing or 1-2 hp.. add a TRD air filter and you get any benefit the other stuff is trying to do. Why do you think Toyota only sells the trd filter and not the cai?
Sorry but I came here from your S&B video so why did you choose this over that one from last year? I'm a new TRD owner.
At the time s&b didn’t make their product anymore so I wanted to review something else for you all. They have it in stock now if you wanna go that route
@@TRDJon Thanks. Love your vids. Keep'em coming man.
Thanks man!
What does it cost??
Depends on what site. 300-380
Do I trust you that it fits ? I have 2019 4Runner sr5 . Not trd pro
Same motor so it does
TRD JON what’s your recommended cold air intake legal in California for 2019 4Runner
I don’t think any are legal in ca. Maybe the TRD?
TRD JON I believe you’re right , just seeing if i had other options lol
Why did you change to the TRD intake?
They didn’t make the s&b I had anymore for review
@@TRDJon which one do you think is best for off roading?
Both are solid for it. The sb filter may be just a bit better
What was wrong with other intake?
Noting

Why did you remove the second video on this? I thought my app was acting up
Just re uploaded. UA-cam kept trying to process the video when it was already set to public, making the viewer unable to watch it.
I don't know why the eff TRD intake has to be that difficult from stock intake. If they design without having to cut that wire harness I would have ordered it. I'd be screwed if any wire was cut accidentally trying to separate the O2 sensor wire harness.
Yea it doesn’t make sense at all!
ADD A HOLE ON THE SIDE, ADD NEW FILTER , CALL IT TRD?
I am wonder this also. Does the stock housing connect to the fender? If no you could make your own easy. Or just order that part that connects to the side with the bottom housing
