- Hey everyone! I finally bit the bullet and installed the TRD Cold Air Intake on my 2020 Toyota 4Runner (which already comes stock with the TRD exhaust) and I could not be happier with the end result! Here’s everything you need to know and why this may be your last chance to get one for your 4Runner or FJ Cruiser!

i just got my 2023 trd off road premium back in july and he is not exaggerating when he says, buy this car if you want it. it'll be the last best truck SUV out there. i didn't think I would love this car more even after owning it. its just a beast

Thanks for this video. FWIW, I just purchased a 2024 TRD pro, and the dealer (San Francisco Toyota) was able to get the TRD Cold Air Intake installed the next day, before delivery. And, yes, I also added the TRD exhaust. Can't wait to pick up my new baby!

Could you let men know exactly who you dealt with in SF. I am getting the run around for my new 2024 4Runner. They say that there is no part in the catalog for that.
Great video, thanks. I just installed mine. I noticed the top cover doesn't exactly completely seal - I can still see the edge of the red filter between the top and bottom cover. Did your top cover close and seal completely? Looks like some dust may be able to get into the box? Thx
Yes! Mine sealed completely but I also had my dealer install it and they did an outstanding job especially with the wiring that had to be done.
Just watched this. Hail to the Prince! Love what you did. I’m considering getting an intake upgrade and now considering too a Magnaflow exhaust upgrade. Would you do an ecu upgrade?😊
Hello again! The TRD Pro here in the US came with an upgraded TRD exhaust which sounded great with the 1GR ;) and probably would sound even better on your Prado. I personally would never do anything related to ECU software just because I’d hate to ruin anything by running something that wasn’t fully vetted by Toyota. But that’s probably just me being overly cautious.
@@joshjamescars I think so too and after watching your video you’ve convinced me to get a similar set up with the air intake upgrade. I’ll let you know what happens after the upgrade. Looking forward to your next video.
Love the video. I can hear the intake giving that extra noise. My 04 G35 that I had many many years ago with an intake sounded like that.
Going to see if I can get the intake because I have a 2024 TRD sport.
Does the intake void warranty even if sold by Toyota and the dealer / installed by the dealer? Does it make the car run lean or rich? A tune required to factor in AFR values?
Hello! I loved the G35, that was an incredible car. As for your questions, ask around at a few different dealers because I’ve heard conflicting things from people. My 4Runner was a 2020 and so it bolted right up no problem and the dealer warrantied the work for 3 years (I waited until after my new vehicle warranty was up to install it). However I’ve heard from folks here in the comments that some dealers say it’s only “officially compatible” with 2021 and older 4Runners. Not sure if there’s any truth to that since nothing about the engine has changed, but do your homework since yours is brand new and you still have 3 years of the new vehicle warranty left. It’s an OEM Toyota Part, though.
I personally didn’t notice any change to the way the engine runs other than it felt like it could breathe a lot more freely which was really nice because as you probably know from owning yours the engine and transmission combo make it feel a little anemic stock.
And for what it’s worth, when I sold this in late 2023, I got $50K for it from the Toyota dealer which meant it APPRECIATED by $4,400 from the $46,500 I paid for it brand new in late 2019. So it didn’t hurt my resale at all. Might have helped it, too.
@@joshjamescars I absolutely completely appreciate you being upfront and your honesty. This is amazing advice rather than "Go and buy it". I will definitely revisit this when my factory warranty is up and even then I may not get it. Would you recommend getting the TRD exhaust for the TRD Sport instead? That shouldn't be an issue correct? Unless it causes some amount of back pressure?
Of course! That’s the whole point of my channel. Since I’m not a Toyota dealer, there’s no incentive for me to sell people on things, LOL! The exhaust I could take or leave because the 5-speed transmission in the 4Runner can make it drone at highway speeds and some people don’t care for that. If you can find a TRD Pro to test drive, they all come with the exhaust from the factory. I think it sounded great especially getting off the line but I’m not sure if I would have spent the money to add it to mine had it not come with it.

I have a question i have a trd 4runner off road premium and bought a trd pro intake, everything fits perfect except the maf sensor.? the intake maf sensor is a little big. Can Someone help..?
It should fit right on but you or the dealer will need to splice and rewire the airflow sensor to sit on top of the intake. That’s true of installing on any 4Runner, though, and why I had my dealer do the install.
Hey Josh....pulling up the rear with my last Toyota purchase for a while....a new 24 4Runner TRD Pro....and yes you can still get these now...but there are many TRD CAI...do you have the part number for this?
My dealership is pleading ignorance here....both on this part and its usefulness.
WOW!!! Congratulations on the new 4Runner! Trust me when I say that thing will be worth MONEY in the near future, so great choice. The part number for the intake is PTR03-89100. Do some googling around, though, because some people say it’s not compatible with 22+ and some say it works perfectly with 22+ and I’ve never gotten a straight answer one way or the other.

Did you notice an MPG improvement?
I did not, but… I average 14mpg anyhow. 😂 Actually, it makes you want to drive the car a little harder to really get that sound so any improvement in mpg from the gain in air intake is cancelled out from revving the engine higher. 😂
@@joshjamescarsI have a similar setup in mine. TRD intake and Gibson exhaust. I'm definitely seeing improved smiles per gallon. Haha. You're exactly right, this is how they should be from the factory. Then again, seems most people are of the opinion that these mods are a waste of money. I kinda like being one of few that has it. I have an adaptive race chip too which really makes the most of the intake and exhaust.
Many people say there is an annoying drone at highway speeds from the TRD exhaust?
There can be but it’s only when under medium to hard throttle. If you’re just cruising along and or coasting you don’t hear much of it.
Does the cold air intake add on change the stock TRD PRO exhaust note? As in, the stock sound is pretty nasally sounding but this makes it deeper and richer?
I would say so, yes. And to a surprising degree, I have to say. To your point about nasal, it’s like the difference between a person who’s congested and one who isn’t LOL!
@@joshjamescars And as you said it adds more engine noise into the cabin, but simultaneously enriching the exhaust note. I’ll have to decide.
So it doesn’t add that much more noise to the cabin over the already loud stock exhaust that you can already hear in the cabin, you just hear the richer note inside more too. It’s really from 3,500RPM onward where you only are under acceleration.
Ive seen mixed reviews/sites saying it dose/dosen't fit on my 5th gen 2016 SR5 4runner
Well Toyotas official compatibility says it fits on all 2021 and older 4Runners. Your dealer can confirm that for you and install it if you’re interested.
How does this differ from the stock box? Wouldn't just a TRD air filter get the same results?
I think you should start with looking up the basics of how a cold air intake works, and then pull up pics side by side and you’ll see the difference. The TRD air intake has a much wider, straighter tube and no resonator for better (cooler) airflow which allows the engine to breathe more freely.
do you think just having this Cold air intake without the exhuast will make a difference. the exhaust and CAI together installed will probably cost 2k. trying to thinks if that's worth it
The exhaust is going to make a much bigger difference than the intake for purposes of making your 4Runner sound better. But with the cold air intake you can definitely tell the car can breathe a little bit better.

Ask your dealer to be 100% sure but I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t! :)
I want a 4 runner trd pro so bad, but I don't know if I could deal with the power. All I keep hearing is how slow and sluggish it is.
It really depends what you’re used to, what you may be coming from, and how you drive it. I can tell you I frequently do around 100mph on the intercity expressway and have taken it to the 115 limiter elsewhere. So, it’s sluggish if you drive it that way. But if you’re coming from an M3 or an IS-F or something then yeah it’ll be a lot slower than you’re used to.
That said, my boss who has an M5 competition also has a 4Runner for going to the mountains in Colorado and she drives hers the same way I drive mine (fast) and she loves it too.
And the other thing about 4Runners is they don’t ever lose their value. Mine is still worth what I paid for it back in November of 2019. So they’re a great financial choice and they’ll last forever too so you either sell it and get a lot of your money back or you keep it and drive it forever.

@@joshjamescars any car can go 100.but how long did it take to get there? I'm not looking to drag race by any means. I'm mainly talking about the TQ. I always hear how you have to floor it just to merge in the highway.
@akronohio23 Right and any car can be considered fast or slow depending on what you’re used to. I think you need to go and test drive a 4Runner and see and feel it for yourself. Nothing you read on the internet can replace that experience.
I also just noticed your handle and if you still live in or around Akron, Ohio, in my experience in Ohio your freeways are a lot slower and calmer than our Texas freeways so you might not need to push it like I do to get into traffic. You’ll also want to note that 4R TRD Pros have the part time 4WD system so above 50mph you’re in a rear wheel drive car. Not ideal for winter weather driving.

@akronohio23 Oh then that’s perfect 4R weather! Go test drive one and see for yourself. If you don’t care for it, a new Land Cruiser Prado and a new 4Runner will likely be out in the next year or so. They’ll both ditch the current 4.0 V6, though, so keep that in mind.

@@joshjamescars what year is you Jeep. Are you worried about warranty if something happens? I know it’s a Toyota product but they didn’t install it and seems like they are saying it’s not for 4Runners after 2021, I think
@jj4996 This isn’t a Jeep, it’s a 4Runner. A Jeep is a totally different car. And ah, maybe that’s why it’s no longer listed anywhere. Mine is a 2020. And no I’m not worried about warranty. It’s an OEM Toyota product so that means it’s as high quality as you will ever get.
@@joshjamescarsthanks, sorry don't know why I said Jeep, but that's my other project vehicle. I have a 2024 4runner, but they don't list it for higher than 2022. Prob something for emissions.
@jj4996 Ah yes, and 2022 also was the year that they included the 360-camera and a few other goodies which could have also meant wiring schematics changed as well.
Put a Magnuson supercharger on it and you will love it more

I"ve had SEVERAL master mechanics advise AGAINST the cold air intakes saying that cold when it hits HOT causes condensation and will result in rust and corruption in the engine---- WHAT do you say about that? Any issues?
I’m skeptical of this for a few reasons. First, this is an OEM Toyota TRD designed and engineered part and has been on sale for literally 13+ years (it was originally released for the FJ Cruiser) and I don’t think they’d still be offering it if it caused engine rust. Also, if you’ve only heard this from mechanics and not actual 4Runner owners with the OEM TRD intake, I’d take those statements with a grain of salt. Second, it’s important to understand that not all cold air intakes are the same. Google them and you’ll see the difference between this TRD intake and the cheap intakes you can buy on eBay and Amazon which are basic intake tubes set into a piece of sheet metal with what looks like a giant coffee machine filter. Those you definitely want to avoid, but this TRD intake has an actual air box and flat filter just like the stock intake (so the design is the same as the stock air intake just with a bigger diameter intake and muffler delete). In the end, don’t do any modifications you don’t feel comfortable with it, it’s as simple as that.

Yes, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) parts and accessories are all OEM. I’d highly advise doing further research on these before you go out and buy.

Right but what I mean is, you should go and look at how a cold air intake works (which is fact, not opinion) and look at the products on the market from everywhere out there which will put the opinions you’ve collected into context and perspective.
