      @@hawaiiantactical9468 we had the guys at Diesel Toys confirm our ECU tune, but they don't have one specific to this intake. We also recently regeared the 4Runner from 3.73 gears to 4.56 gears from Nitro Gear. So, our current ECU tune is completely wrong. We are in talks with some of our friends with OV Tunes about looking into that possibility as well. For now, the fuel economy is pretty much the same, but the get-up-and-go is fantastic.

    I like S&B intake sound. Definitely would look into a electronic tune. It's amazing how much horsepower you can get through a computer. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. We been playing around with computer tuning on our semi trucks. We went from 475 horsepower to 600 just by flashing the files. Added a stage 2 Borg Warner turbo and a C-18 800+ horsepower cam which isn't cheap. That computer file added more horsepower per dollar than the cam and turbo. Flashing the computer $500. Turbo $2400 and C-18 cam $1000. Biggest gains were through the computer. I like your heritage grill. Different than everyone else. I want to do something different myself. Where can I get a grill and bar without holes for lettering?

    • @TrailorSailYT

      Definitely biggest gains are with retuning on the programming. I really want to get into that this year.

    This is an older video, but I just stumbled upon this.
    Two questions: 1), does this help with low RPM torque? The constant downshifting whenever I approach anything resembling a grade has gotten very annoying. (And I am on stock size tires). These things have plenty of HP, in my opinion the problem is that the torque is at the wrong end of the RPM range.
    2) at higher RPMs, does the intake noise cover up the sound of the engine? I find the amount of engine noise that intrudes into the cabin to be irritating, as to me it is not pleasant sounding at all.
    These are my two big issues with my 5th gen, I'm looking into possible aftermarket options to try to address these issues before I resort to just selling it and getting something with a better powertrain.

    • @TrailorSailYT
      @TrailorSailYT  3 роки тому +2

      So, we tried this intake, a K&N filter before this, a throttle controller, an engine retune, and finally regeared to 4.56:1 Nitro Gears... While everything before it helped in one way or another, the 4.56 gears ended up being the solution too the transmission hunting and downshifting. Fair warning though - our overall fuel economy went down... We are working to find a solution to that soon... probably going to retune the engine computer.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 3 роки тому +2

      @@TrailorSailYT thanks for the info. I'll try the throttle controller, but maybe not waste money on the other stuff. Regearing is out of the question from a financial standpoint. Maybe if I had plans to go to larger tires eventually.
      From what I've read, these engines can't be "tuned", the ECU won't allow it. Which is a shame, I hear the OV tune works wonders for the 3.5 in the Taco.
      I guess supercharging is really the only solution for the 4.0. (Also financially out of the question)

    • @TrailorSailYT
      @TrailorSailYT  3 роки тому +2

      @@trailrunnah8886 Yep. Sounds like you are in the same boat we were in a year ago.
      The iDrive throttle controller has been fantastic, but it doesn't do anything for power - just response.
      As for the Nitro Gears 4.56 kits, we got a discount on the gears and the labor from local shops that helped us out. I'm in the process of making a video about the regear right now.
      Supercharging would be nice, but I don't want the cost, the complexity, or to deal with premium fuel costs and availability.
      As for ECU Tuning... we had a tune/reprogram done last year by a local shop that specializes in Toyota ECUs for Diesel engines. The tune was great until we regeared... now it shifts too soon. OV Tune does have a tune for the 4Runner they are working on. That's probably going to be your best bet (give it a few more months).
      We may be trying to go the OV Tune route if they have a tune specific to the 4.56 gears.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 3 роки тому

      @@TrailorSailYT I'm looking forward to the regear video! I think that's a great option, especially if going with larger tires and one has the budget, haha. I'm going to give one of the throttle controllers a try, everybody that has used it speaks very highly of them, I've never heard anybody say they used, it hated it, and took it off. Of course everyone that's never used one has a lot to say about it, such as "just press the pedal harder". Well, I've started to just put it to the floor, and that still doesn't really do the trick.
      The other thing I'm kind of mulling over is changing Vehicles. I've been looking at GMT800 SUVs, the 2000-2006 Tahoe/Suburbans with the 5.3 V8, and those are a steal. Plus I could probably buy three or four of them for what my 2013 4Runner is still worth, LOL.
      It's a tough decision though, because the 4Runner suits my needs very well. Oh well, decisions decisions haha.

      @@trailrunnah8886 I absolutely loved my 1994 Suburban that I bought from my parents. 2WD and tons of capabilities. That being said, I don't think I could give up my 4Runner. LOL Definitely give the throttle controllers a go, and maybe keep your ears open for the upcoming OV Tunes as well.

      I have been using the new version for a year now and I would recommend it. S&B sells a dry filter as well that you can get when you buy the intake or separately later on which I just did and will be switching to the dry filter soon. I didn't have any problems with the oiled filter I just prefer a dry filter as it is easier to clean, and their dry filters are still supposed to last over 30,000 miles with a yearly cleaning. You don't have to get a retune...like i said i've been running it for a year in my 2019 and have never gotten a CEL or found it acting strange or off in any way. Increased mpg, nice sound, and a bit more grunt from 3-5k rpm

      No, when I spoke to s&b rep he said with “Toyota” sometimes the computer has to relearn the maf reading, and it will kick itself into limp mode. And that cycling the key multiple times will make it relearn itself and kick out of limp mode.
      I made the effort for 2 days disconnecting the battery, starting the truck multiple times, to no avail.
      So I took it in and the check engine code was for the TPS sensor and it needed to be replaced for the truck to have throttle again.
