    If you are really looking to increase longevity and want a cleaner running engine you should look into the JLT oil separator. I have one on my '19 (as well as the S&B intake) and the can catches about 8oz/year of oil, gas, and water that would otherwise be routed back into the intake manifold.

    I've been using mine for about a week and I'm loving it. The throttle response has improved which was a bit surprising to me, and the sound it makes is subtle but great. I have a pretty good theory as to why some people claim that a CAI will lower gas mileage and that's because now they're gunning it just a little harder in order to hear the new sound their car makes. I may also buy the paper filter and use that when I go offroading, as those catch smaller particles typically.

    heh! if you saw that he was worried about dust getting into the engine before he actually just made it worst with that "filter" it may be high flow for air however it will allow more dust to enter also and with the oil getting on the Flow Sensor it won't be long before seeing a Code showing up. Your stock 4Ruuner system is already a Cold Air intake set up just not a high air flow one. If you use the setup they show here find a better filter because your engine cost too much to give it dirt along with the air.

  • @ron8975
    @ron8975 3 роки тому +4

    Who's air filter was in there before? I suspect K&N based on the oil and grease in the stock air box.
    Either way both Toyota and K&N have warranties on the off chance there's damage.
    The engine is fine.
    The computers check so many things these days that if there was a problem you'd have a check engine light on.
    Besides, it's just Talcum Powder fine dust traveling with the air flow. It gets sucked in and blown out. It can't get in the bearings, it can't get in the oil, the air in the cylinders is always moving or burning.
    Don't worry.....

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  3 роки тому +3

      The air filter was a TRD High Flow which is part of the problem. I know his engine is fine but he is just waiting for it to blow up. Drama queen. I completely agree with you.

    Great Video. Enjoying watching the progression on your edits. Like the transitions with the steps. I think the Padawan used way to small an impact (1/2" drive) for those massive 11 mm bolts holding the intake on. I would have broken out the 3/4" drive :) Keep up the great vid's can't wait for the next one.

    Looks like you can remove the clear cover for street driving for better performance. Definitely nice for better protection off road. And 4Runner engines can last to about 400,000 miles, so a little bit of dust is not a big deal. That’s what the oil filter is for.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  Рік тому

      If you remove the cover you won’t suck in cool air from under the fender, you will get hot air from the engine. Not sure if there is a huge difference, but just something to think about.

    A couple of things, those of us who daily drive dirt, and Caliche roads, you’ll find grit, gravel, and sand in your OEM box! But the original filters should do a decent job in preventing that crap from making it into you engine if you maintain your filters. Second, might I suggest you remove the Mass Air Flow Sensor from the original tube before disconnecting. This will allow you to manipulate it in a fashion that makes it easier to see, and disconnect. Minus all the bitching, great video guys.

    In order to keep all the crap and moisture out of my air box I ended up with a snorkel with a EngineAir precleaner. It is now dry and clean. Do a leakdown test and record the numbers. Do this once a year and it tells you how much the rings and valves are wearing. I would not worry about a little dust you have had in the past.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  3 роки тому

      Thank you. Unfortunately living here in the desert where the ambient temperatures can start at 120 degrees I would never put an air compressor in the engine bay. The heat will shorten the life of a very expensive piece of equipment. I would honestly place it inside of the back of the 4Runner. Trevor and I both run smittybuilt compressors that attach to the battery. I’m not a huge fan of the ARB unless you are running air lockers then you are committed to that system.

    I'd love to see an update on this!. Would be curious to hear if any gains in SOTP power or mileage were noticed.
    I'm thinking of getting this for my own 4Runner, would like to improve both of those things a little bit, though my brain tells me that that's probably not going to happen.

    • @Serjical23
      @Serjical23 2 роки тому +1

      I've had mine installed for about 8 months now on my 2019...honestly the best part about it is the sound lol it's very subtle but a nice touch to the otherwise loud and bland engine noise. Performance-wise I don't really feel a difference from stock, it seems maybe a smidge quicker in the 3k-5k rpm range but i drive like a grandma so maybe I'm just not pushing it. Economy-wise it bumped my mpg by about 1.5 to 2 but remember that will depend on driving habits (remember i drive like a granny lol). And the mpg gain i got went away after I lifted it and put on 33's.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 2 роки тому +1

      @@Serjical23 thanks for the info! I drive about 25k miles a year, so 1.5 to 2 mpg would actually be a noticeable improvement. I wouldn't really expect any performance gain, the mileage gain was what I was curious about. And the noise sounds like a plus as well, anything that covers up the terrible engine noise is good, haha. I drive like a grandma as well, so I would probably notice the mileage gain as well. My mileage is always down this time of year, but typically I can get around 20 MPG with mine. It has stock size General ATX all-terrains, and I have full skids and sliders. No lift yet, but as I'm just past 130K on stock suspension, it'll probably be coming at some point within the next few months. I plan on keeping the stock size tires though.

    So what was the cause of the dirt in the intake, passed the air filter? Seems like an air filter issue or an air leak.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  23 дні тому

      Trevor and I both think the cause was the very fine desert dust was sitting on the filter and at low rpm when there isn’t a ton of air flow sucking it against the filter it will bounce around from the terrain and get around the gasket. Thankfully only in small quantities but it adds up.

      Actual power gains are minor, but you get a better throttle response for sure. It’s not a true cold air intake; it’s just a larger filter. Actual colder air can help produce more power, but that comes from lower off the ground. But because this allows more air mass to the engine, response and mpg will improve.
