I used to love NFP. His articles in Dawn back in the day helped me in understanding things a lot. However, looks like he has frozen his thoughts in a bubble.
The world is changing and is changing very fast. And for those with a basic understanding of calculus, the rate of change on out planet is much higher than the rate of change of our country.
We are not changing and we don't have much time left in our hands either. Human misery at an astronomical scale awaits us and our intellectual class is out of their depths.
I don't know what's gonna happen but status quo is not the answer. The thing that hurt me the most is there is no escape for hundreds of millions of us. Though I was able to escape!

He talks so lovely, rationally and on the basis of curios evidence grounds , have been adoring nfp's work since I was in school, am 17 now and more I grow , the more I come to love people like paracha sir , Syed muzzamil, shezad bringing in political awareness, rationality and sense .
I am shocked as a Karachite i know that he’s speaking facts but it takes great courage to defend your perspective out in public.

It is good but felt repetitive. If yiu have lived in karachi, you know pppp winning is not a surprise. They played it smart. A few seats here and there, itna tu chalta hai. That's true and that's what they have discussed for 2 hours.
The paranoia of the UP landed classes and remnants of the Mughal feudals affected politics of the entire subcontinent. Their sense of entitlement, clinging to old systemic faultlines basically is responsible for a lot of problems. Thankfully land reforms and development of other states in India, managed to make the UP landed classes irrelevant in India. Wish the Sindhis had managed to similarly blunt the group in Pakistan
Land reforms in Pakistan were a virtual impossibility from the get go. Barring Jinnah, the entire leadership of Muslim League were feudal lords. Would you expect them to dismantle the very system that kept them in power during the British Raj?
The landed gentry of Indian Muslims were not Mughal feudal but rather those who supported the British in the 1857 War of Independence. Those who fought against the British were destroyed into oblivion.
It wasn't land reforms or the development of other Indian states that put India on path to prosperity. It was 1991 Balance of Payment crisis that made India liberalize it's economy and that set it's path. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh are the architects of the Indian Renaissance. And they achieved it by doing the exact opposite of what Nehru family did for 40+ years. When Nehru family failed and failed miserably and the Indian leadership was bold enough to chart another path is when India got it right.
You shouldn't expect this from Pakistan because Pakistan's identity can be described in 4 words, "We are not India." That is the crux and the essence of the Pakistani identity.

Bhutto tried to some extent but again uncle sam intervened due to nuclear programme and overthrown his government. Bhutto was revolutionary leader he would have done something extra ordinary for pakistan but usurped by the punjabi establishment. Urdu speaking don't like any sindhi community. They have this fake mindset of superiority.
@@JW-be8wf Agree with most of your points barring two. 1.My point was solely in the context of the UP Muslim landed class that moved to Pakistan. There were significant amounts of property that came from Mughal patronage. The Awadh dynasty sprang from the Sipahsalar of the Mughals in the region who paid tribute and collected taxes on behalf of the badshah of Delhi and maintained an army to defend the Mughal sultanate. Hence most of the land in UP was granted to zamindars/minor kings/nawabs under the suzerainty of the Mughals ( and maybe some portion by the British)
2.There were significant anti-land reforms forces in India too. However we had great leadership and honesty of purpose which pushed the reforms through.
The Muslim League leaders who moved from India to Pakistan were forced to leave behind their jagirs and zamindaris. They should have been the ideal leaders to bring in land reforms because they were going as dispossessed refugees. The Hindus and Sikhs who fled from newly created Pakistan were the dominant wealthy communities of that land. The land and wealth left behind by them should have gone to the exchequer of Paksitan. But how could the elite have added this to their personal wealth if there was a robust land reform?
OTOH Indian govt hurried to enact the laws so the property of people who moved to Pakistan became the property of the Govt of India. There is a very interesting account of the humongous property of Raja of Mehmoodabad in Lucknow (who went to the other side of the border) was confiscated as enemy property. The Raja's son kept fighting for the property as he opted to return back to India. Finally after 4 decades he was granted some of his properties of the value of 400crore INR but 90% of it remained with the govt.
Sindh contribution for Pakistan movement needs to be discussed. Please discuss G.M Syed role. People should know his vision, he was right.

Karachi is an ever evolving work in progress. Its divided mandate caused it fragmentation.
Now its mandate is clearly defined. Local bodies, Sindh government and Federal government is aligned.

It's amazing that Nadeem thinks urdu speakers are insecure and biased without mentioning the quota system, systematic sidelining of urdu speaking community by Sindhis, and intentional destruction of Karachi by the PPP
Read about the first time word Quota was even uttered here. It was done by Liaqat Ali Khan and the specific quota applied to Karachi to secure jobs for immigrants'. It can well be regarded as insecurity. Quota implemented by Bhutto was almost two decades later and if had been implemented on merit wouldn't have been bad at all. It's the inherent corruption within the system that makes it the bad thing.
Do you remember liaquats quota system in favor of muhajirs? That was kosher? Muhajirs are sidelined? Lol give me a break. They dominate in Karachi in private jobs and business even politics. Even in Hyderabad. Who is murtaza wahab, shehla raza, sheery rehma, taj haider, najmi alam, raza rabbani, qadir patel? All muhajirs. And you have the balls to say muhajirs are sidelined? Muhajirs make it big in private jobs bcuz there's no sifarish there and businesses hire the best talent. Govt jobs is a different story, no merit. I have no issues with Sindhis progressing on merit. Again, I consider common Sindhis my brothers. I'm against the systematic discrimination at the govt. level

@@razaalee9477 a quota system wasn’t required at that time in the way it is used today and nor would there have been any insecurity as immigrants were significantly more educated, it may have been done to attract skilled labour to Pakistan however you cannot use this argument to say that Urdu speaking immigrants haven’t faced severe systemic bias and prejudice based on their ethnicity.

NFP narrates it as it is. His honesty and bluntness is unparalleled. The best thing abt the episode as a whole is that both shehzad and nfp are pulling no punches here. Much needed and very timely.

12:37 Against all racism that does exist in Karachi but NFP conveniently missed out on a big factor how badly Urdu speaking were treated for years after migration. If there is resentment against Sindhis and Punjabis then you have to also look at the racism that Urdu speaking people have faced for decades.
@@ThePakistanExperience Ruling section of a community is always the minority part of it. Majority of Urdu speaking struggled to get jobs and even renting or buying a house was difficult. I know these instances from personal experiences of my relatives and friends. Also, killings on 90s definitely intensified the sentiment.
It’s unfortunate that politically religion and ethnicities are still used to gain power but it truly creates rift and unneeded divide.
There was a lot of racism against the mohajirs at least until about 30 or so years ago. Just because there were some elites in power that did nothing for the common people except the non mohajirs took out their resentment on them. I understand the lack of empathy and hatred towards the mohajirs as they probably did come to the new land thinking they will make it just like the home they had left and maybe ticked off a lot of locals, but it’s about time we move on. I find you Shehzad as a fair and open person but I can sense that you don’t have the same feelings for the mohajirs. I don’t feel like Pakistan is my country or that I belong there. I’m glad I’m out and other than my dad’s grave nothing ever attracts me back.

@19:10 he dodged the question. You're right many of the muhajreen are not urdu speaker nor identify themselves as one. My family migrated from Pune in '47 and they still to date communicate in Gujrati. My daddi used to read all her books in Gujrati (she passed away last year).
I am from Maharashtra and a frequent visitor to Pune. Would love to know where they stayed in Pune. Also, now Pune is in Maharashtra so Gujarati has lost its space from Pune. So has Marathi from Gujarat. They were a part of Bombay state earlier. Now two separate ones.

i’ve been watching this podcast, still an hour to go but just pausing the video to thank you for bringing him again, i can safely say this is by far the most thought provoking podcast i’ve watched after a long time, so thank you. keep going man!
Lots of respect for NFP. Two points of worry though:
1. “Feudalism in Sindh has ended”
2. “PPP is NOT fundamentally feudal”
It’s people like NFP on whose shoulders falls the responsibility to fix the biggest problem that Sindh faces today but he is bending over back to protect feudalism.

almost at 1:57:00, lots of criticism for analysts who are calling the elections rigged, no detailed explanation as to why and how PPP's won. The conversation starts well, some potentially strong points are raised but within minutes it turns into a rant. Let's spend more time on how exactly is that they manage to win, people will inevitably judge who is right and wrong. I think TPE can benefit from having a better structure to the interviews, if you take the rants and anecdotes out, this shouldn't be more than an hour, if that. Regardless, TPE is doing a good job in having these talks. Really appreciate it.
The critique of Non-Karachi media's generalized and uninformed coverage of Karachi's elections was fair but it should have been followed by an honest discission of the elections themselves. I felt that many important points were missed such as gerrymandering of the constituencies. How does District Central have 46,000 voters per UC while Malir, west and Kemari have less than 30,000 voters per UC? Are these not undemocratic tactics?
The day they teach this in schools Pakistan will prosper. Critical thinking is need of an hour for Pakistan to survive.
I have watched the previous part of 3.5 hrs as well, amazing talk no doubt..but without touching the subject of quota system the political history of Karachi is incomplete..its one of the major rootcause behind the emergence of MQM, more so than the arrivals of Pushtoons during Ayub and Afghan war periods.

Absolutely pathetic. One can see that NFP lived up to his reputation as a staunch Jiyala. No mention of the pathetic situation of Sindh under PPPs rule.
Mr. Nadeem Paracha Sahib's solution to the Ahmadi question is very simplistic. Ahmadis are not allowed to vote in Pahistan unless they declare themselves non muslims first. It can never happen as Ahmadis profess themselves muslims and their sect is not confined to Pakistan only. To advise them to vote as non muslims in Pakistan, and then profess themselves muslims globally is not possible.
Thanks Internet our eyes are opening and that alone is enough to bring revolution in Pakistan

Never seen NFP talking so superficially, 1st riot was purely politically motived, when Gohar Ayub was on a project to punish karachites for supporting Fatima Jinnah. And the fear for constitution and the delay in elections was more to do NAP and the cold war.
Which actually shifted the political center pf Karachi from Burnes Road to Liaqatabad and Lalukhait where Gohar Ayub started the unrest with his procession. Burnes Road was the student politics HQ of Karachi, since KU, NED , DJ College all were there, and before Gohar Ayubs unrest, the political activism of Karachi was led by students of these colleges and universities.
NFP, has a depth of knowledge, but recently he seems to have shifted towards one side. I agree with his analysis on PP and its voters. He talks about positives and negatives of PPP and its voters, but for anti PP vote bank of Karachi, he stops short of giving details on their prospective, which is unfortunate, because from his articles a decade back i learned a lot about emergence APMSO and and MQM in a nuetral and objective way. But as he mentioned in this podcast the Urdu Speaking and multi ethnic areas of Karachi, are not the areas PPP focused on, and neither won from, and it was JI vs PTI in these areas. But the Karachi discussion in podcast was inly on the electoral politics of the areas where PPP won, and I agree with the views presented. NFP, we need objective journalists and historians like you for rest of the Karachi too. And I know you have done studies on this, I would request you to cover Karachi outside of PPP lense.
One thing I am dissappointed about is the issue which PPP has admitted, is the unfair delimitation of the city for elections and the census issue.
You both discussed in details why people voted for PPP, but even though you mentioned that JI did an effective campaign, but you encapsulated the whole vote of JI, as due to their reputation of doing work. Its not that, for last 5 years JI has stood out on speaking on almost all the issues faced by the city. Which is really unfortunate that MQM failed to this for last 14 years. I dont count PTI as failure for Karachi politics, as it was never expected from PTI to actually do something for Karachi, PTI followed the policy of "you cant fail, if you dont try".

There is no single reason to vote PPP, and thousand reasons not to, in last elections when MQM wasnt in full form people of Karachi decide to vote for PTI instead of PPP, PPP is ruling Sindh for more than 14 years leave Karachi, show any good work of them in any other part of Sindh.

There is nothing similar in RSS n Jamat e islami in terms of religion n culture....RSS talks about Bharat only n they have their muslim wing as well but jamat e islami is clearly a hardliner Islamic organisation which is also involved in major terror funding activities n Jihad n also they are directly involved in politics unlike RSS......You may agree or disagree with RSS' ideology but u can't compare RSS with Jamat e islami.....There is a trend in India now a days that left leaning people try to compare RSS with terror organisations like Al-Qaeda n Afghan Taliban which is not the case

Why we sre so shocked that PPP won in Karachi is because by now every one should know how corrupt it is, despite Karachi being a city it is absurd that people there are so out of it that they would keep voting based on ethnicity stuff.

After 4 years of being on the same page the army had to step back and not interfere in a VONC. Yeh toh unki majboori thi. Then why didn't the PDM, especially Pmln whose vote ko izzat do narrative had popularity go full throttle with it. They could have used this majboori to loosen the hold of the army on entire Pakistan especially it's economic resources. Is pmln too lazy or does it not have the competence to carry out such a thing, or is there a realization that there is no way you could come to power without the army even when it is at it's weakest?

Has been a bigg fan of NFP for last 15 odd yrs but he sounded v naive when he asked what is this rural and urban Sindh, sounding like he is blaming it on Urdu and Punjabi media who portray it like that. He didn't touched the subject of quota system which has introduced this elusive division in Sindh by Bhutto and ultimately played a big part in the politics of Karachi and Sindh...plz comment on Quota system which is the rootcause of the emergence of MQM.
We worked very hard during floods in worst hit KN Shah Tehseel Distt Dadu, my own foot became a size of football. We used to go out at 5 in the morning and return at 1 in the night, and we sweeped the elections in KN Shah for PPP. Apart from PPP only people who I saw working were Saad Edhi and his team and our brothers of Dawat E Islami.
