Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy is a Nuclear Physicist holding a PhD from MIT. He taught physics for nearly 50 years at Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad and was a visiting professor at several US universities including University of Maryland, Carnegie Mellon University, and MIT. He is a sponsor of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a member of the Permanent Monitoring Panel of the World Federation of Scientists, and founder-director of the Eqbal Ahmad Centre for Public Education. Since 1988 he has headed Mashal Books in Lahore which translates books into Urdu for promoting modern thought, human rights, and women's rights. Last year he started The Black Hole, a community space in Islamabad sector G-11/3 for promoting science, art, and culture.
In 1968 Dr. Hoodbhoy won the Baker Award for Electronics, and in 1984 the Abdus Salam Prize for Mathematics. In 2003 he was awarded UNESCO's Kalinga Prize for the popularization of science. In 2010 Dr. Hoodbhoy received the Joseph A. Burton Award from the American Physical Society and the Jean Meyer Award from Tufts University. In 2011, he was included in the list of 100 most influential global thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine. During 2013-2017 he was an adviser to the United Nation’s Secretary General. In 2019 he received the honorary doctor of law degree from the University of British Columbia.

Pakistanis do not understand India and it’s mindset and make a false picture in their minds. All Hindus are happy with hindutva. Because hindutva is just a sanskritized name for Hinduism. What Hindus want is to preserve Indian native civilization that has emerged in the land of India. Any thing imported from outside and has been forcefully imposed on us would have to take backseat. We are not here to cherish Arab civilization or even western civilization, we are here to cherish and propagate Indian civilization. Only to the extent Muslim civilization has evolved on Indian land we are happy to own it. That means burqa which is Arabic clothing fashion will not get any encouragement and will resist its imposition.

I am a fan of Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy's open ideas; and being a student of theoretical physics and an engineer, I appreciate his scientific work and temper.
I would however with humility like to point factual inaccuracies in comments that were aired on this program by Dr. Hoodhbhoy and the host in this program; and would urge them to do some basic research.
The below writeup is written with spirit of scientific exchange and humility and appreciation to the genius of Dr. Hoodhbhoy. Hope that we would examine and review the same.
Sanskrit is as very much inherent to Indian Subcontinent. Yes, it may have a wider foot print; but the fact that it is very much inherent to Indian Subcontinent can be easily examined. Let's pick Hindi/Urdu for example.. " 1. tvam (Sanskrit)-->tum (Hindi/Urdu); 2. adya(Sanskrit)-->aaj (Hindi/Urdu) ; 3. bhavati (Sanskrit)--> hoti (Hindi/Urdu) 4. karoti ( Sanskrit)-> karta/karti (Hindi/Urdu).". I can go on and on. The evolution and intertwining of Indic languages ( including South Indian languages) from Sanskrit can be easily examined by a bit of Scientific study.
Now coming to the "supposedly exaggerated claims" of Scientific achievements of ancient Indian rishis and scholars. I would like to give just some simple examples. I would urge Dr. Hoodhbhoy to examine in a dispassionate way with scientific temper. 1. Ashtadhyayi of Panini--> This small book of 14 Maheshwara sutras ( look up table/data segment) and around 4000 rules ( the code segment). These consititute a context free generative grammar that is necessary and sufficient to generate/analyze Sanskrit. This is a masterpiece that can be appreciated by any scientific mind even with a cursory examination. No wonder that there is tremendous interest in Sanskrit with regards to Natural Language Processing
We can further look at works Chandas (prosody) example that of Pingala that incorporate combinatorics, number theory and generative functions.
The fact that ancient India had a tradition of serious mathematical and scientific research can be easily understood with some basic research of ancient Indian works and Sanskrit was the language used across Indian Subcontinient to exchange, convey and preserve scientific thought. Also extensive research was done in spirituality, philosophy-- Yoga/ Vedanta etc etc. Sanskrit works have preserved these thoughts for eternity. Learning and understanding a bit of Sanskrit unlocks the connect to ancient/medieval and contemporary India/ Indian cultures/ Indian languages and Indian knowledge base. One also gains understanding how all countries in Indian subcontinent (irrespective of the superficial cloaks of religion) and intrinsically tied even at an ideational level.
I would urge Dr. Hoodhbhoy, Mr. Ghias and all Indians and Pakistanis to do some basic study/research to uderstand their roots, theirown languages and their own land ( Indian Subcontinent/ Bharatavarsha) to know about themselves, the scientific work this land and its people have generated; and how the knowledge-base of the ancient India has been preserved thanks to Sanskrit language. This is not with a sense of false pride; but a genuine appreciation of human endeavor and high thoughts that this land --> Indian Subcontinent/ bharata varsha ( Mother India)-- irrespective of the modern borders has generated. We owe our due diligence and basic research to these accomplishments. Sanskrit language does offer a key to these accomplishments by our ancestors of ancient India.

If it has become somewhat of an issue in the last few years, it is mainly a delayed, eventual, and overdue reaction to the excesses by one of the other religious community. So introspection is required by Muslims of the subcontinent, especially the Pakistanis.

LIST OF MOSQUES WHICH WERE BUILT AFTER DEMOLISHING THE HINDU TEMPLES
We give below, state-wise and district-wise, the particulars of Muslim monuments which stand on the sites and/or have been built with the materials of Hindu temples, and which we wish to recall as witnesses to the role of Islam as a religion and the character of Muslim rule in medieval India. The list is the result of a preliminary survey. Many more Muslim monuments await examination. Local traditions which have so far been ignored or neglected have to be tapped on a large scale. We have tried our best to be exact in respect of locations, names and dates of the monuments mentioned. Even so, some mistakes and confusions may have remained. It is not unoften that different sources provide different dates and names for the same monument. Many Muslim Babas are known by several names, which create confusion in identifying their mazãrs or dargãhs. Some districts have been renamed or newly, created and a place which was earlier under one district may have been included in another. We shall be grateful to readers who point out these mistakes so that they can be corrected in our major study. This is only a brief summary.
It should be kept in mind that the list below doesn’t include all the temples destroyed by Muslims and which were converted to mosques. The below is the list of mosques and Darghas where evidences exists of having been made after destroying the temples at
these locations. In many mosques, Muslim rulers were able to eradicate all signs of temples, and hence not given in below list.
Anyone is free to visit the below list of mosques and see the remnants and materials of Hindu temples used in their construction. Archaeological Survey of India should conduct an excavation of below mosques to find out more about the ancient temples in these
locations and possible mass graves around the mosque sites.

Exactly, lately I've been losing respect for Dr. Hoodbhoy's so called neutral, objective secularism. He seems to have the same tainted view of India according to Islamic mindset of anti Kafir, anti Hindu narrative. His deep seated inner hatred towards Hindus comes out when pushed. He's quoting western research that has no proper understanding of Hinduism, Islam, what happened on Indian soil in past few thousand years. He says Muslims only destroyed 3-4 Hindu temples. Why does he chose to lie? Everywhere in India one goes to visit Hindu monuments, even in Ellora, Hoyshala temples in deep Karnataka, you find beheaded statues, which happened during Islamic attacks in those regions. Besides, he says that Sanskrit language came from Syria. Such a huge lie. The complex grammar of classical Sanskrit was laid down by scholar monk, Panini. Did Panini come from Syria? Besides, Syria is not Indo -European region, whereas Sanskrit is well established that Sanskrit is an Indo European language.

Indian imposed Hindi even in South India but did not stop the development of regional languages. Slowly Hindi spread in the whole of india. Local cultures need to be encouraged.

I like Pervez Sahab. His expertise is in Physics which I respect. However, his history can , at best, be described as amateurish . Sushruta from 600 BC is legit considered a pioneer in surgery in Western circles. No self-respecting Western Indo -European language expert would ever claim Sanskrit originated in Syria. Also historians who claim that Hindus destroyed buddhist temples fail to name even one such buddhist temple that was destroyed. There is simply no evidence of it. Whereas there are thousands of documented temples (Both hindu and buddhist) that can be specifically named that were destroyed by Turkic invaders including by Mughals (whom he so easily exonerates). History doesn’t seem to be his forte.

Sanskritham is very much from Indian Sub-continent Land.

I have huge respect for Mr Hoodbhoy, he is one of the most pragmatic voices coming out of the subcontinent. I have to admit I directly jumped to the India part and am compulsively reacting so apologies in advance. I am in complete agreement that there is a massive movement in India to revisit historical narratives and have a relook at the question What it means to be an Indian ? But the disdain and contempt with which this topic was dealt in the podcast comes out of share colonial hangover and wokeism. Dr. Hoodbhoy needs to look at the history beyond Romila Thapar. I read Thapar in college, a lot of her theories got dismissed after Rakhigarhi excavations carbon dating. Her lack of knowledge of Sanskrit led to several flaws in her theorisation, which are available, another thing she is quite bad at is understanding geography for a holistic view of history, Land of 7 rivers and the ocean of churn by S. Sanyal give a different and more scientific perspective.

Hindutva was a very specific, very narrow concept proposed by an obscure Bengali philosopher, and promoted actively by the Hindu Mahasabha of Savarkar, and the RSS of Hedgewar. It has nothing to do with any of the others that you have mentioned, with the possible exception of Swami Vivekananda, that too as a matter of interpretation.

Following points in response, regarding sanskrit, hindu planes, and Hindutva ( short for why don't they take it all lying down). All of the following points are verifiable.
1. The Prof. is probably talking about the Mittani empire (around 1500 BCE), which was ruled by Sanskrit speaking indo Aryans. The proof that a Sanskrit manual for horse rearing was found there does not mean it originated there. There is nothing before and after that.
2. Zoroastrian Avesta written in the Zend language (today's Iran) is very close phonetically to Sanskrit. (Run a search on the similarities, you will be surprised). Sanskrit is indo Aryan but using one sanskrit text found in Syria does not prove, it originated there when you have nothing else. Also since only the mittani elite spoke it, all the more reason that it was not local to the region. Also Indo European does not mean European. Lol.
3. Plastic surgeries are described in a book called Sushruta Samhita. (Ist millennium BCE) The professor just needs to google Sushruta. I mean the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Melbourne has his statue attributing him as father of surgery. Doing on your research on this is easy but calling it fake is easier, I guess.
4. Nobody claims Indian scientists developed planes. But the idea has been discussed in Hindu religious thought. Few of our demi-god's were supposed to have some rides. Ramayana mentions a plane , vimana in Sanskrit, that Ravana used to ride, named Pushpak. But that's not attributed to normal humans.
5. The prof should look at bhaskara 1, bhaskara ll, aryabhatta, Mahavira, varahamihira. Look at what they were working on and when they were working on it. Also, just look at the Kerala School of Mathematics. Just google. None of this is fake news. Guess what they were not doing? Translating greek and roman work.
5. Hindus take pride in their history except it is actually their's (and yours). They also reform their culture and religion with time. You do not own the Indus Valley Civilization, the Takshashila University, Chanakya, Puru (Porus in Greek) and Basant but take pride in the borrowed names, attire, language, culture and value system. Taking pride in your own history and culture is different than taking pride in the borrowed history of your invaders, are different things and should not be compared.
6. Professor says India is improving in science but it is not America. Lol, what? Have some perspective, Prof. It can't be America in such a short time after 1000 years of colonization. We are on a journey and one day we will lead the world of business and science, that's the goal. If the prof does not like that, guess he will have to deal with it.
7. Savarkar wrote a book on Hindutva. Savarkar also said, I am a Hindu because you are a Muslim. Hindutva is a reactionary movement. If not for the Islamic invasions and subversion, Hindutva had no need. Hindutva has an external locus, is not expansionist outside the subcontinent, has no divine call behind it, all unlike Islam. The reason you see a large portion of the subcontinent still hindu after 700 years of Islamic rule is Hindutva. For context Persia was converted in 20 years.
8. About the Islamic rulers of India and their love for Hindus. They did what happened in Arabia 1400 years ago to Kaffirs. They did it with confidence when they could, citing sunnah. When they couldn't, they took it back as well. (See Maratha Empire 1759 , Sikh Empire and the jaat kingdom of Surajmal.
All in all, I would say that Hoodbhoy is a gem, criminally under-utilized by Pakistan in Physics and mathematics. I would always respect a scientist who went to the alma mater of the great Claude E Shannon. But butchered the job as far as Indian history is concerned.

I have few points to ponder, Sanskrit may have a different country of origin, like to know if you are aware off. Ramayan and Maha Bharat were written in Sanskrit so are many such epics. Ramayan was written by Valmiki between 400 and 350 BCE, consisting of 20,000 poems. Mahabharata written by Vyasa Mahamuni around 300 BCE with 100,000 verses, the longest epic poem ever written. If Sanskrit originated somewhere else they should have existed in that country of origin. Appreciate if Prof Hoodboy can enlighten us on that
Other comparison I object to was that of PM Modi with Pakistani worst dictator. Modi can never be Ziaul Haq, India can never become Pakistan, Hindu's are not Muslims.

As someone who witnessed Partition firsthand and still carries its mental scars, I can vouch without any doubt that Dr. Hoodhoy's views are his own and not borne out by the facts on the ground recorded by a reputable historian. History is what actually happened and not what someone thinks happened. While the Dr. Sahib is entitled to his views, these should not be accepted as facts.
There is much propaganda in certain quarters that Pakistan may not be a viable state and trying to define it as a so-called garrison state to defame its military that defends its borders. The state of Israel was created at about the same time as Pakistan. The people who occupied it had never even lived in it. They belonged to different countries of Europe and had different cultures and languages and only had religion in common. Some four million Arab inhabitants of Palestine were forcibly removed to make room for Jews who were no longer welcome in Europe where they had lived for two thousand years. Yet, no one talks of Israel as an unnatural and non-viable country but there is no shortage of the detractors of Pakistan which is so much more cohesive and integrated.
It extends even to re-writing history which raises many questions. It may work in talk shows but not when it comes to real history as recorded by reputable and unbiased historians in authentic books like (‘Shameful Filght’) by Stanley Wolpert, ('Indian Summer') by Alex Von Tunzelmann , ('Liberty or Death') by Patrick French, ('The Raj') by Lawrence James, ('Eminent Churchillians') by Andrew Roberts, and (‘ The Sole Spokesman’) by Ayesha Jalal. Unwary readers are strongly urged to take a look at these and not go by the motivated storytelling in questionable publications and Utube in particular
