I served in the U.S. Army in Germany in a tank battalion from 86-89, right at the end of the Cold War. This song captures that time perfectly. I’m an old man now, but this song still brings a tear to my eye.

USN 85-89. Stationed in Yokosuka. Got pictures of the Russian coast north of Vladivostok. Somewhere we should not have been.
Germany in the 80s. Fulda Gap? Safe to say if the balloon went up, us forward deployed units were toast. We were expected to take as many with us as we could.

@@Calinn86 Pfft...the irony of you saying that on a Polish girl's channel... You do a great injustice to the truth -- which is that many people (e.g., Poles, Germans -- East and West, NATO soldiers and even Western taxpayers) sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to give us a world that is much better now, for more people, than it used to be. This is inarguable. Your energy would be better spent working on what remains to be done rather than attempting to deceive others in re what has been done.

When this song came out It seemed like the world was heading toward peace. The wall was coming down, freedom and prosperity was on everyone's minds. The literal freedom bell was ringing. It did not take long for those walls to go right back up and for the wars to start again. This song gives me hope that ,one day, the world will be at peace.

This song always touches my heart as well. It was written shortly before the Berlin wall was taken down and with its timing and it's message of brotherhood/sisterhood it became something of an anthem for the fall of Communism. I'm both glad to see that it can still touch fresh listeners today. And saddened that its message of hope remains as needed today as it was back then.. But great reaction girl! And hope you explore more songs by this fabulous band!

This song always brings me back to the end of my teen years at the end of the 80's/start of the 90's. As you said it became practically an anthem, not only for the fall of communism/the Soviet Union, but all the changes which suddenly happened after decades of the Cold War and the world basically being quite nervous. The tearing down of the Berlin wall and reunification of Germany. The release of Nelson Mandela from imprisonment and a few years later the official end of apartheid in South Africa. The warming of relations between east and west (see the images of Gorbachev shaking hands with the Pope for example) and, yes, the fall of authoritarian communism and rise of democracy in many of the states formerly behind the "iron curtain". It seemed like the world was on the right track for a while there and we had reason to be optimistic about the future.

This song resonated with people across the world because of what it was addressing, which was the stains that remained from WW2.

wow - a great & a very understandable reaction. As as our leaders drive us to frustration while delivering their own unique power crazed version of the world order.
Please I humbly suggest 'Scorpions - Wind Of Change (Live At Hellfest, 20.06.2015)' for a slightly different perspective on the same track - please no shame in letting the tears flow as it is a very understandable reaction

The timing of this song couldn't have been better. Released in Nov 1990, on the album entitled "Crazy World" (pretty fitting title for that time, as post-Cold War Europe was a mess) it came at a time when the Fall of the Soviet Union was in the air. The Berlin Wall fell a year before, in Oct 1989, and then the Soviet Union collapsed the next year in Dec 1991. I was a Senior in High School at this time, and was so hopeful about what the future would hold in the former Communist Block, but as Yeltsin's Reign in Russia came to and end with Putin taking over, that hope quickly faded even back then, because once a KFB agent, always a KGB agent. I tried giving Russia the benefit of the doubt as they were helping build and man the International Space Station, but with Putin's continued aggression into Chechnya, Georgia, and Ukraine, it's clear that Russia has not changed at all since the old days of the Soviet Union. The only real difference is that they aren't hard-core Communists anymore, and they're allowing religion, but other than that, they're still the same ol' Authoritarian Dictatorship that's Hell bent on re-establishing the Russian Empire.

Hi Adrianna, Beautiful ballad which you couldn't have got away from back in '90 played everywhere endlessly, It really captured the Zeitgeist of the time when there suddenly was a sense of real hope in the air with the collapse of the former U.S.S.R, Berlin Wall coming down, Imminent Independence of Ukraine etc and yes it's tragic to see what's happening now in Ukraine & Gaza/Israel, Anyway powodzenia! Hello
I was 17 when the Berlin Wall fell, and I remember the video of a famous cellist, Mr Mstislav Rostropovitch, giving a recital in front of the wall. I also remember the deferlante of "Solidarność" in Poland and the work of "sapping" communism by Pope Jean-Paul II. A great moment in history which is the basis of this Hymn to Freedom by Scorpion.
    Yours sincerely
    Sébastien from France.

The joy that we saw from those who were finally free from the oppression of the Soviet Union was incredibly moving. One of your countrymen, Lech Wałęsa, was a true hero and was instrumental in helping Poland and the other Warsaw Pact nations gain your freedom. Keep up the great reactions and reviews!
