Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy left their native Seattle to follow two brothers that had gone to Canada as members of a band. The song was written for the man that Ann had fallen for. He was her magic man. I saw that band play at a local bar here in western Canada with some friends and we knew then that the Wilson sisters were destined for much greater things. About a year and a half or so later the album Dreamboat Annie came out and raced up the charts.

The "Magic Man" is Mike Fisher. He was an American who had gone to Canada to avoid being drafted into Vietnam War. He came across the border & went to Ann's concert when she was with Hocus Pocus where they immediately fell in love.
After Nancy joined the band in '74 they wrote "Magic Man" & released it in '75. It became their first number one hit!
Ann shared: "It’s absolutely my leaving home song. My mother wasn’t all too sure that the best thing for me was to-even though I was already 21, she wasn’t sure that I should be jumping into this full-time sexual cohabitational relationship with somebody in a whole other country. She was calling me, going, ‘What are you up to? C’mon, I don’t know if you should be going this. Come on back! Be careful, give it some thought!’ And I was just like, ‘Nope, nope, I’m gone! I’m in!’ It was love at first sight that lasted for about eight years! But “Magic Man” was definitely written about the spell that I was under and my conversations with my mother about it at the time."
    "Straight On" next.....

"Magic Man" is the one who first made love to the girl in the song. He's the one she fell in crazy, passionate love with because he wooed her and spoke lovely, firey things to her; they got high, they talked about all manner of mysterious things and they made love. That is enough of a reason for this, most probably, teenage girl to call him the Magic Man. "A woman from a child", is how Ann Wilson described it, in the song. He gave her that awakening, if you will.

One of my grandpas was in WWII, korea, and early Vietnam. The other couldn’t, he tried joining in WWII, he had some minor medical issues, but severe enough they wouldn’t take him. He ended up in aviation during WWII, helping to develop and build the aircraft we needed, until aerospace and one of the project leads/QC for manufacturing of one of the companies that made parts for the Apollo missions, his company he ended up at even helped make some of the subsystem for the tomahawk cruise missiles, was his last project before he fully retired, for the second time. The others were army/navy…USMC here, so yeah I give them shit all the time.

Lex, Usually when you go into the studio, you give the vocals all you got. But when you go out on tour you need to find a way to be able to sing the song every night. Back when Heart was putting these songs out it was record, tour record, tour. Bands from the 70's would do shows 7 nights a week, sometimes for weeks on end. And Brad, the Magic Man is that guy that Ann's mother didn't want her to go out with. But you know young girls, the heart wants what the heart wants. They all love the Bad Boys. 😎☮️

Ann and Nancy Wilson, were the first women to front a rock band, EVER. They may claim to be a Seattle band, but they were nothing in Seattle. The guys in the band became draft dodgers and headed north to Vancouver BC Canada. Ann followed them and then a year later, Nancy joined the band. Their first album, produced and recorded at Mushroom Records in Vancouver, was Dreamboat Annie. Vancouver fans made the band popular, so in my mind that’s where they’ll always be from. They played at my high school.

Written and composed by Ann and Nancy Wilson, the song is sung from the viewpoint of a young girl who is being seduced by an older man (referred to as a Magic Man), much to the chagrin of her mother, who calls and begs the girl to come home. In an interview, Ann Wilson revealed that the "Magic Man" was her then boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher, and that part of the song was an autobiographical tale of the beginnings of their relationship

I saw Ann Wilson 5 months ago.. She sang this and she sounds better now almost 50yrs later.
"Magic Man" is Mike Fisher the guitarist.. Ann's boyfriend at the time who became their manager. She ran away with him to Canada to escape the Viet Nam draft. This is a true story of her Mother telling her to come home. "Try to understand ..he's a "MAGIC MAN" Mama!" But it's the story of love gets in the way of thinking clearly. As we've all done.
Check out Heart's song "Wild Child"
For her "delicate" voice "Dog and Butterfly" or "Dreamboat Annie" Ann plays flute beautiful.

I love Heart, especially this song and Barracuda, but one thing in the videos that always kind of bugged me was that they often edited the videos to make it seem like Nancy, who only plays rhythm, is playing those guitar solos and killer riffs when it was actually Roger Fisher (until 1979) and then others.
