    This is not only a break up song, this whole album is a break up album. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham broke up and a married couple in the band, John and Christine McVie broke up. The entire album is a break up album. And one of the biggest selling albums ever.

    • @DavidSmith-hd9bz

      All 5 members of Fleetwood Mac were getting divorced during the making of this album and it almost didn't get made. Mic Fleetwood was also getting divorced from his wife during this time, well as the McPhees and Stevie and Lindsay. Rumors is an awesome album of what it's like to break up with your significant other.
      The album came out I believe in 1977.
      The chains is each couple's marriage, the running in the shadows is the affairs that each member had during that 2 year span of the previous tour and the making of the album.

    This was their commitment song as a band. They had two volitile relationships within the band and if any of them broke up, which they did often, they had to commit to not breaking up with the band. There was intense drama coming from that band since they ALL wrote songs and they'd write spite songs about each other that they all had to sing. That emotion was all real. Any chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Don't break the chain. No one can be weak. No one can quit the band. That's what it meant.

      Artists don't seem to take risks anymore. They used to experiment and try different things. If a song was a failure and nobody bought it then they would try a different idea.
      These days they don't seem to take risks and don't try new things. They have a formula that works so they release the same stuff over and over and over again. I don't know if it's the record labels pressuring them to make risk-free guaranteed hits or if it's the artists getting lazy?
      Electronic sounds don't help. Some artists have never even seen a real instrument before. In the old days, a drummer, guitarist, and other musicians tried different things and let the music take them somewhere. They played from the soul. How can an electronic instrument on a computer let an artist play from the soul?

    Lindsay Buckingham is an amazing guitarist, one of the best in rock history. Very unique style which accounts for the "banjo" sound you were describing, he plays without a pick using his fingers. Banjos are played in a similar fashion.
    Mr. Buckingham is the man who inspired me to pick up a guitar way back in the day and study music as my major in college. :-)

    • @Ottawajames
      @Ottawajames 3 роки тому +7

      banjo players have picks on their fingers. "Clawhammer" is a style of play, generally on a 6 string, that is prevalent in Bluegrass and other music from the Southern US that doesn't use finger picks.
      Steve Martin plays in this style.

      The reason it sounds similar to a banjo is less about Lindsay playing with his fingers, and more that he's using a resonator guitar on this track. Banjos also have resonators, so there is a similar short, tin like sound.

    • @lastnote
      @lastnote 3 роки тому +4

      @@djC653 Nope - mandolins do not sound like that. They are tuned higher and have double strings, so you would hear some chorusing that is not present in The Chain recording.
      But if you don't trust me, I just looked up the wikipedia entry. "The finished song has a basic rock structure, although it has two distinct portions: the main verse and chorus, and the outro. Influences of hard rock, folk, and country are also present. The Dobro, a type of resonator guitar, supplies the verse riff.[4][9] The song is in E minor, which is the relative minor key of G major.[10] The vocal range is G3 to C♯5."

    THE CHAIN
    The song was literally spliced together from combinations of several previously rejected materials. The song originally represented the internal fractures - both romantically and professionally - of the band members, but eventually came to symbolize their triumph in staying together.

  • @irishgrl
    @irishgrl 2 роки тому +16

    Every member contributed to this song which was a little different than usual. There were basically 3 songwriters: Stevie, Lindsey & Christine.
    Stevie & Lindsey were falling apart & John & Christine McVie were also splitting up. Yet, they ALL made a conscious decision to keep the band together (chain keep us together) even tho every member was pursuing their own path emotionally, some were seeing other people outside the relationships (running in the shadows). This song became their signature concert opener. It signified the sacrifices they all made to keep the band together regardless of how they felt about working together….and it made for some amazing lyrics (Stevie & Lindsey especially)
    This band has been a staple in my collection since the mid 70s.

    To understand this 1977 song and the Fleetwood Mac album 'Rumours'... u gotta know the history of the band:
    Fleetwood Mac was formed in the 1960's in England as a blues rock band feat. Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass) & Peter Green (guitar)... However, the band was unstable and by 1974, they had a number of records, Peter Green had quit the band after having a mental breakdown, and the band which also featured John's wife Christine McVie (organ & vocals) relocated to L.A. and were looking for a new guitarist.
    They came across a record by a duo called Buckingham-Nicks which featured guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and his gf Stevie Nicks on vocals... the record did not sell, but Lindsey Buckingham became an on-demand guitarist - he was asked to join Fleetwood Mac, and he accepted only if Stevie came along too. Fleetwood Mac was reborn in 1975 when the self-titled album was released, featuring songs (and vocals) by Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks & Buckingham... it became a massive hit. But w/ fame & fortune came drugs, egos and conflicts.
    When Fleetwood Mac began recording the next album 'Rumours', John & Christine had separated and Christine was dating someone in the band's crew... Lindsey & Stevie were fighting all the time and split up as the songs were being written & recorded - so the lyrics that came out were very emotional and real. The couples' break-ups and afterwards having to work together and see each other every day was a very painful situation... even Mick Fleetwood's wife left him around that time.
    Lindsey Buckingham wrote "Go your own way" and "Second hand news" about Stevie... She wrote "Dreams" & "I don't want to know" about Lindsey... (Christine McVie wrote "You make loving fun" and "Don't stop" about her new relationship after her split)
    "The Chain" started as a ballad written by Stevie Nicks... but this final version was credited to every member of the band, who added their parts. The song refers to the situation of breaking up but still tied together because of the band.
    When the album 'Rumours' was released in 1977, it became one of the biggest albums in music history - right next to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'... AC/DC's 'Back in black'... Led Zeppelin's fourth album... The Eagles' "Hotel California" ... In fact, it made the charts AGAIN today, after a Tiktok video went viral w/ the song 'Dreams' playing in the back.
    Despite their rocky relationship thru the years, Lindsey & Stevie seemingly put their animosity aside to work together in Fleetwood Mac in 1997. But in 2017, Stevie demanded that Lindsey be fired for the band to continue touring (he was replaced by 2 live guitarists) Christine McVie left the band in 1999... but was welcomed back in 2014. She & her ex-husband John seem to be on better terms today.

It was both mesmerizing/haunting & relaxing, thanks to that I looked out for any future work of theirs. Many, many wonderful songs followed & the discovery of Stevie Nicks as a lead vocalist extraordinaire. I hope you enjoy exploring them as much as I have.

      @@Mike_Daddy Its a double+ metaphor ingeniously written by Stevie. Her and Lindsey had a "chain", John and Christine had a "chain", Stevie and Mick had a fling and the band as a whole had a "chain" that kept them all together through all of it. Maybe because they loved the music, maybe because they needed money for more cocaine. Either way it led to one of the greatest songs ever and a perfect analogy for the Fleetwood Mac era.
