    Heart is an American rock band formed in 1973 in Seattle, Washington. The band evolved from previous projects led by founding members Roger Fisher (guitar) and Steve Fossen (bass guitar), including The Army (1967-1969), Hocus Pocus (1969-1970), and White Heart (1970-1973). By 1975, original members Fisher, Fossen, and Ann Wilson (lead vocals and flute), along with Nancy Wilson (rhythm guitar, vocals), Michael Derosier (drums), and Howard Leese (guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) formed the lineup for the band's initial mid- to late-1970s success period

    The legend says that Roger Fisher heard about Van Halen (by that time Eddie Van Halen was famous because he turned his back so no one could see what he was doing with his guitar), and Roger took it to another level, he tuned up his guitar with the next setting (E - A - D - G - D - G) so everybody could see him but no one sounded like him because of his tuning.
    That's why he sound so exotic even though he seems to play pentatonic scales
    Sorry for the awful english hahaha
    Greetings from Mexico :)

    Magic Man... Inspired by Ann's real life phone calls with her mother about her relationship with the draft dodging band manager in Canada. The Wilson Sisters are from Seattle and their father served in the Marine Corp. Complicated to say the least. .

    I still remember when they came back home to the Seattle area, from playing the bars & small venues in Vancouver, Canada. They'd been there because Ann's BF, Michael Fisher (brother of Guitarist Roger) was avoiding the Vietnam Draft. Ann & Nancy's Father, a hero in WW2, intervened with the corrupt local Draft Board to keep him out of Vietnam. Subsequently they were playing small venues around Seattle. We were too young to get into bars, but had heard the buzz around town for quite awhile about "these two Chicks from Bellevue (Seattle suburb) that sound just like Led Zeppelin." We camped out half the night in he parking lot of a nightclub in N. Seattle, trying to get the Bouncer/Doorman to keep it open so we could hear. Not long after that, they finally broke out in the U.S. I've seen them several times in the last 45 years, and they've never disappointed. I'd go so far as riding my bicycle 30 miles round trip to see a concert! Ann's voice is/was the best ever in Rock, hands down. The blood harmony with Sister Nancy is special. Nancy's acoustic guitar ability is amazing, too. Now, even @ 73, Ann still sounds great. Sure, you can tell a difference but age has taken very little. Listen to the song "Mistral Wind," the power ballad to end all power ballads. For a truly fantastic experience showing how NOBODY can cover Led Zep like them, listen to "The Battle of Evermore" from "Live in Seattle" 2002. Absolutely stunning, do I daresay it's BETTER than the original?!!

    The guitarist you notice playing the lead is the underappreciated Roger Fisher. He was responsible for a lot of their early rock sound. Howard Leese is the other guitarist, who played keys as well as guitar. And Nancy, as she did on many songs early in Heart's career, is playing acoustic guitar here - probably her strongest instrument - and singing harmony vocals.

    • @headlibrarian1996
      @headlibrarian1996 7 місяців тому

      I always thought it odd Nancy plays rhythm guitar in her own band. Band founders usually play lead.

      @1cdrsubkiller 7 місяців тому +6

      No disrespect to Nancy who knows the number of guitar styles but she is 3rd best guitarist on that stage that's why she's playing rhythm and that was true in many of the early songs

  • @Sp33gan

    This is the Heart I remember so fondly. Though the band is from Seattle, they called my Vancouver, Canada, home for their earliest years. Before the fame, they played at one of my high school dances, they played at local roller skating rinks, they played free concerts in the city parks, anywhere they could. After they blew me away at my high school, I went to as many of their shows as I could. I was there often enough they began to recognise me, though we never spoke. Just nods and smiles of recognition.
    Beth, you're exactly right on about the Folk sound in Ann's voice. Heart's early sound was a blend of Rock, R&B, Gypsy/Folk, with a heavy does of Led Zeppelin. Ann also played flute in those early years. I've a story about the last time I saw them on a beautiful August night under the stars, but I've said it so often in reactions to the band. As the closing act of a full day of bands and singers, they were the closing act and even managed to top the Little River Band and their gorgeous harmonies.
    The Wilson sisters had bigger hits during the 1980s but, for me, nothing can match the beauty of the original band and how incredibly good they really were. ♥

    When I was a kid 13 or 14, I didn't dislike Heart but ignored them for other stuff. I got the chance to see them live when I was 15 and boy did that change in a big way real fast. That was 40 years ago and it might still be one of the best live shows I've seen and not to brag, that's saying something. They were amazing throughout but their encore covers of Zeppelin were mind bogglingly good. The first one was Rock`n`Roll and I had no idea they even did Zeppelin covers at that time. I seem to recall needing both hands to pick my jaw up off the floor. 😏

    First heard Heart at the Cotten Bowl, July 4th, 1975, i think, Willy Nelson played after them, but i left after heart played because it was had to be 140° on the field. I was 14, drove there from 3 hours away. Times were very different. And yes Heart blew my mind they were so good. All of them. Also, at 8:52, you are hearing both Nancy and her sister in the harmony, not sure who sings what.

    You couldn't have picked a better example of a female powerhouse from the 70's-80's. Heart exploded in 1976 with Dreamboat Annie...becoming the first hard rock band fronted by women. (my view). We saw her this summer in Wisconsin. She remains a solid sopranic voice tho her breath holding power has diminished... ..she's 73 and often sits down because of weakness. But when she sang Heart classics...all you heard was astounding applause. Aside: she appeared near Milwaukee the same weekend of Harley Davidson's 120th Anniversary...whose main performers were Green Day and Foo Fighters. She held her own.. giving a great performance 20 miles away. In the arena of classic rock...she is still a masterful jewel. Thanks for covering this most talented woman. 👏 😊

    In my yoot, Anne Wilson and Linda Ronstadt were the premiere female voices of rock, with power, clarity, and dead-on pitch control. Today, we have very few in their league. Floor Jansen, obviously, and maybe Simone Simmons and Amy Lee. They seem to have gravitated to metal bands.

    Loved this Beth! Heart really was it back then. Struggling with a heart (the inside the chest one) condition can be a struggle. I unfortunately know first hand, still here. I hope one day again you’ll touch on Karen and her ability to sing like and angel and play the drums. That combination is so rare and name other females who did it, even rarer. The Carpenters appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1970 at Walter Reed Hospital in a live performance is maybe an exceptional example. I think it would make for an excellent analysis. I hope you agree. Trying to keep her spirit with us and you can provide the venue. Be well and Roar!

    I really can't believe you haven't gone down the Moriah Formica rabbit hole yet. She is this generation's Ann Wilson and has one of the best voices in rock music today. Her band PLUSH is going to be opening for Disturbed and Falling in Reverse this Winter, and she is also a featured singer in Trans Siberian Orchestra. She literally sounds like a young Ann Wilson when singing any Heart song. Her versions of Barracuda and Crazy on You are sewn into UA-cam history as being the best. She was also a 4 chair turn on The Voice at 16 singing Crazy on You. You really need to check her out - you won't be disappointed!!!!

    I did not know that Anne Wilson was multilingual. I'm a high school graduate, Army Veteran who without any formal education (I have in the past employed tudors)speaks Spanish, German, French, and Japanese, as well as a passing English. I'd rate myself as a good distance from fluent in Japanese. I'll make a fair number of grammatical errors if I don't speak very slowly. Of the other languages German is by far my strongest. I've had a couple Germans who were surprised to learn that I wasn't German

    Just came across your channel recently and love your reviews that i have watched so far. I have a couple suggestions for you to check out. A cover band called First to Eleven, just released their version of "Someone Like You" by Adele and they have over 400 videos on you tube to pick from. Also three of the members of First to Eleven are in a band called Concrete Castles which does original music. They just recently released a second album called "Brand New Me" whic has some really good songs. Check out the song "Smile from that album, her haunting vocals were amazing. Audra Miller is the vocalist in both bands.

    Ya, that is Fisher not Nancy. It's not popular with modern audiences but the backing band came up with many of the progressions and compositions, both guitar and singing, we love today. Oh no!
