I never said it was "real water," but water effects have come along way and are more complicated than just being "textures" - with this being an effective but simplistic exception. I was admiring the fact the video exposes the technique they used to fake an effect that was considered costly and difficult in 3D. There's a reason Quake on Software didn't have the transparent water and distorted lens effects its hardware accelerated peers did.

You missed a pretty magical time in gaming. Nothing like having that next door neighbor with his 64(before cell phones), becoming friends, riding bikes to his house and seeing those "amazing eye popping realistic graphics". Alots changed VR is the future
Your videos really strike a unique chord for me. Just the childhood what ifs about games that become less interesting when we understand them better as we get older but like you have a way of explaining them and talking about them that's still just as interesting
I remember in the DS version i discovered a glitch to run underwater.... but i forgot how to do it... either something involving grabbing the shell weirdly, entering the water in a strange slope, or swimming into a rock with weird slope incline that broke the swimming.... Probably the last one.

Well to be fair there's only one Desert, Only one Clock, only one Haunted Mansion, only one Giant Cave, only one Fortress, only one Size shifting Island, only one Battlefield on open plains, Two Lava Levels, Two Wildly different Snow Levels, and Four seperate Water Bound Ventures

The ones that duplicate tropes are usually where the problem lies anyway, Dire Dire Docks as an example is a second water level, but sucks hard compared to Jolly Roger Bay. While Wet Dry World has the unique gimmick of being able to drain the water. Not sure what this fourth Water Level you're talking about is, but the secret aquarium secret star hardly counts as a proper level (if we count those then the Sky theme is mad overused too, thanks to the Wing Cap, Mario over the rainbow and Rainbow Ride. Bob-omb battlefield is the first of many levels that focus around a montain or tower of some sort you have to climb up or go down, which is the most overused trope in Super Mario 64. Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Cool Cool Mountain, Tall Tall Mountain and Tiny Huge Island (albiet the last one has a twist in its unique gimmick.) Two different Snow levels is another that doesn't really feel very warranted when all the creative ideas are put into the second one and the first is just another Mountain.

A fifth of all main levels are water levels. The same cannot be said for anything other theme.

This was my favorite course in Super Mario 64. I remember as a kid being obsessed with The Little Mermaid and fantasizing about meeting Ariel down in the waters and being at her grotto with treasures untold. I wasn't born in the 19 hundreds, so I didn't grow up playing Super Mario 64. But, I did get a virtual console download of Super Mario 64 on my Wii U, so, although I had fun playing it, I still didn't understand this whole personalization stuff that came up recently. Let's hope that the Wii U can't be personalized.
As a kid I tried many times to grab those underwater green shells and it never worked. Made me wonder why Mario had that pathetic grab/slap animation underwater since it was literally useless. I was so confused when I saw you doing that in your videos.
It's actually possible to remove the water in the DS version without any hacks. You have to select the first star so that the ship is still sunk for this to work. Take Wario [or another character wearing Wario's cap] into the sunken cave and grab a metal flower, then run down the tunnel to the ship. Run across the deck of the ship and try to run up the bowsprit as far as possible. If you go far enough, the water will disappear half a second before your metal power runs out. If you climb back up the tunnel, the water comes back. I know this sounds like I'm making this up, but it's true. I've done it many times. Of course, I was never able to climb out of the abyss to see the rest of the level... I'll have to try that jump kick now!

I've always wanted to see the "swirlys" as I used to call them since I never could get a good look at them. I found out a few days ago that they're actually called energy snakes but can't find any pics of them.
