I think the reason over the rainbow is treated as a frozen level is because in snow levels, falling onto ground from a high place causes Mario to sink into the snow instead of taking fall damage. So to make the clouds work the same way, they programmed it as an ice level, so the "clouds" are effectively just snow.
The concept of an underwater haunted mansion would actually be really cool for a Mario game; I’d imagine it would be fairly similar to the sunken ghost ship level from Super Mario World.

Always fun to see these weird challenges! Thanks a ton for uploading! I wonder if any Challenges like this can be brought into Sunshine, Galaxy or Odyssey!
Granting Star 1 in Dire Dire Docks an immunity is basically saying "Yeah no it isn't possible". Definitely possible with water, as he said, but I don't think it's right to say "We'll remove water on water stages for an extra twist except for this one star that's required to beat the game."
@@gravity8120 but the question was "is it possible to complete mario 64 if all the levels are flooded" Answer, yes. The removing of water for levels that already have water is not part of that question and is just extra challenge. Though it does mean "Is it possible to complete mario 64 if all of the levels are empty of water" would be a no, unless you BLJ through it.
It's really weird to me that enemies who would never normally be in water have water physics, like the chain chomp floating. I didn't think the physics were that advanced in this game, I assumed it was just a state for Mario that changed to swimming instead of falling/walking after a certain threshold instead of a world asset
I love the idea and planning behind this video, though drowning Mario gives me sweat outbreaks 😅 the levels where you had to rely on coins to restore health or you'd drown, were always my least favourite.
I am still amazed that Mario has a throwing animation in the water since in the original game you never get to pick up or carry any tossable objects in any levels, he picks up shells but they disappear in Mario's hands so you don't ever get to toss them, plus he starts swimming automatically when he picks the shells so the unused swimming animation when he is holding an object that isn't the shell in the water is also pretty interesting to watch too. Good thing this unused animations were in the game or it would have possibly broken the game.
This is funny because ever since I played this game as a kid, I always wanted to be able to swim throughout the whole game, just remove the annoying life bar and give Mario the lungs of Donkey Kong and we are good to go lol
Growing up with this game and seeing this cool underwater adventure is pretty spectacular. Awesome content, great job and def look forward to the next innovative experience we can explore with ya!
I'm guessing WMotR is cold so Mario doesn't take any fall damage, and the game never has to handle Mario dying in there, since the only "death" should be when he superdies and falls into the ocean.
Except you can actively set the water level to be four different heights; that's the whole gimmick. Besides, it's not even top and bottom, it's the left and right sides. They're overlapped due to space constraints, but you pass through a horizontal tube, not a vertical one.

The air in water levels should be water Edit: the water in “non water” levels should be air, as in cool cool, hazey, sand, tall tall, snowman, and tiny huge
It still is even if you take out Big Boo's Haunt and Hazy Maze Cave. Also remember he dried up Dire Dire Docks for extra challenge; in the context of this question, technically all stars in Dire Dire Docks should be obtainable but he didn't count the ones that weren't obtainable while it was dry. So yes, even without those caveats of no doors and Bowser's Sub being marked as clear, it would still be beatable.
I have another idea that’s similar to this: Super Mario 64 but areas of water and areas of land are switched. Everywhere that is filled with water wouldnt have water, and everywhere that didn’t have water would now be filled with it. So imagine JRB but the bottom is filled with air and the air is water
Interesting. I have no idea if the game would even know what to do in that case. Depends on if the game logic assumes that everything underneath water is water
I just love the monty moles underwater bit. it doesn't looks strange to me it just looks hilarious. What I think is happening is that, that's the monty moles digging animation which happens when they go back into the ground after throwing rocks at the player. because Hazy Maze Cave is underwater this causes the animation to activate but they are exposed so it looks more like they don't know how to swim rather than digging back underground. That's probably why it seems so funny to me.
The reason coins allow Mario to breathe underwater (at least in this game) is that being underwater reduces Mario's power level rather than being an individual meter like it is in later titles, and coins restore Mario's power level; therefore, consequently, coins allow Mario to breathe underwater.
@@williamdrum9899as it was my only Mario game for a long time, even all these years later I still automatically go for coins when I lose health in modern games like Odyssey and always get confused for a second when I stay at the same heart level, rip.
If you broke open the wing cap box with the corkbox in Bob-omb's Battlefield, could you triple jump from King Bob-omb's platform to get the final coin in Mario Wings to the Sky?
That's actually very possible! I think you might be able to reach it then. Only issue is knowing when to rebound when diving in the air so you could reclaim lost height - since you can't see where the water surface technically is without a layer of sprites being manually placed over it.

The air in water levels should be water
Edit: the water in “non water” levels should be air, as in cool cool, hazey, sand, tall tall, snowman, and tiny huge
Ikr because the top of all the water levels are air so he should make it so those air parts are water vise versa
10:04 looks like Mario started to swim
"Can you beat Mario 64 if every level is flooded" except there are like 40 extra rules to actually make it possible this destroying the purpose
You must be fun at parties
I have another idea that’s similar to this: Super Mario 64 but areas of water and areas of land are switched. Everywhere that is filled with water wouldnt have water, and everywhere that didn’t have water would now be filled with it. So imagine JRB but the bottom is filled with air and the air is water
Interesting. I have no idea if the game would even know what to do in that case. Depends on if the game logic assumes that everything underneath water is water

This is actually possible, ask the pancake man.
That requires solid ground. Even if he knew about cloning, it wouldn’t help. He would need solid ground to B.L.J. On.
This might not be THE most claustrophobic video on UA-cam I've seen but it's certainly up there.
2:48 "Mario harnessing the power of money for life" just like people and the American health system

Alpharad's worst enemy... Water levels
I always found the way Mario 64 handled health to be an interesting design choice.
@@williamdrum9899as it was my only Mario game for a long time, even all these years later I still automatically go for coins when I lose health in modern games like Odyssey and always get confused for a second when I stay at the same heart level, rip.
Mario 64 but we stole the water from Jolly Roger bay and dire dire docks to prank peach by flooding her castle
I was about to make this comment. If only I'd had time yesterday!
