  • In this week’s video, I’ll show you how to patch a large hole in a Whirlpool washing machine tub. We’ll start with a technician’s tip on checking the tachometer on a shift actuator. Then, I’ll demonstrate how to remove the spin basket to access the hole from the inside. To prevent further cracking, I’ll show you how to drill stop holes at the ends of radial cracks near the hole. Using a piece of plastic cut from another damaged tub, we’ll patch the hole with 3M ScotchKote Hot Melt Patch Compound. Finally, I’ll guide you through reassembling the machine and testing the repair to ensure it’s working perfectly.

My pen name is Cal Kasheau. Hey, I'd like to shamelessly promote my literary accomplishments while I have your attention. I have several short story titles you can get on Amazon; the links are below. Some are humorous, some reflect events in my life, and some are legends I heard of as a child in the swamps of Louisiana. They are only a dollar or two, and most are free with a Kindle unlimited membership. I hope you will take the time to read one or two and give me your honest opinion in the comments on whether or not I should continue to pursue a side gig as an author.

As a dear friend of mine who was a professional welder for many years, would say that he was able to fix everything from the crack of dawn to a broken heart. Well sir I do believe you've got him beat now.

I am a fan of Goop glue. It has self-leveling and micro-adhesion abilities. If used in sunlight, use marine goop.

Chip, great repair video. You were not kidding about the Scotchkote being expensive. I took a quick look and that stuff averages about $200 for five pounds. Have you ever tried FlexSeal or a 2-part epoxy to repair a leaking tub?

No, I haven’t tried that. I know this stuff works well. If there’s a cheaper solution that works I’d sure try it. Have you ever done a tub seal with those?

@@HarperandKnowles I have not tried either of them. The company I work for says that they can't take on the liability of tub repair. Unfortunately we only replace leaking tubs which rarely makes the repair cost effective.

Yeah, a tub replacement isn't exactly an economical repair. The part cost and labor usually dooms the machine to the scrap yard.

Where to get the best suspension rods for Amana ?

Look for OEM (original equipment manufacturer ) in the product description. You can usually tell by a photo of the product. The OEM rods have longer upper plastic pieces that cover the more substantial linear dampers. You can find them on Amazon and they will cost quite a bit more than the after market brands. Here is a link for an OEM seller amzn.to/4cp5mhc
