The group started (Blackwood Brothers that is) in 1934 I think, of course JD wasn’t with them at the start. I believe JD started with the BW brothers in 1954 after Bill lyles and RW Blackwood died in the plane crash. But he had been in groups prior to that I’m sure. Because I saw him in an interview and he said that singing was the only job he ever had. He was in the industry since 1945 at 19 years of age. Back the was The Sunshine Boys at least not sure who else. Oh and he was also in Masters Five with James Blackwood at some point.
Jake Hess was a true trailblazer. Not many Imperials fans realize that he was a founding member of a group that gave us Russel Taff. But I’ll never understand why in his later years he wore that ugly carpet on his head!
Jake started balding at an early age. When he joined the Statesmen, a manager looked at him and said "look, the rest of these guys have full heads of hair and you" Jake said he stopped the guy and said "if you buy it, I'll wear it." Jake wore a toupee for many years.
As a young girl living in the South, I grew up hearing southern gospel songs! It sticks with you!
J.D, Sumner & The Stamps Quartet, your Band is really super. Thank you for bringing your music to all your fans.
They are all dead. They are not reading this.

Best Blackwoods lineup with Wally Varner
Beyond the low bass singing, jd sumner was a legit businessman in gospel music. Him and JG Whitfield were the Two Businessmen in that scene
Legendário...
I clicked thinking that was David Cassidy
They look much younger than I remember.
That's because the footage is from the 50s.
Crow crown of old black Crow bar baby girl
The Blackwood Brothers.
When was it ?
Summer was handsome when he was young.
That is actually Donnie, his son.
@@davidsanders5153 Donnie is his nephew, J.D. didn't have a son, he had 2 daughters👍✌️
Actually jd never was young hehe
He looks older than true age
I’ve seen JD with about 4 different quartet’s and he’s the lowest and best bass singer I’ve ever encountered !! lol
