JD was a great musician, writer, and person.
Its NOT just about hitting the lowest notes but rather about how well of abass soloist he is, how smooth does he transition from the upper register to the lowest notes and , most importantly, how well does he blend in with the rest of the group.When factoring in all of these elements Jim "Big Chief" Wetherington, of the Statesmen quartette,was the best bass singer ever!

This song comes on and in my mind as I'm driving I play out every word of it in my mind. I'm driving an older car, perhaps a 62, or a 64 Plymouth Valiant, or maybe even an early 60's Ford Falcon, or a Mercury Comet. The car is a basic "Ham and Egger" type car.

He would sing a fairly low note at the end of a song and then he would slide 2 OCTAVES down to like an F1 or an E1. At that time I hadn't heard of anything quite like it. Others have shown up since that are very impressive but I'll never forget the presence and voice of JD Sumner. He is smiling in Heaven!
