It's nice to see a return to Skyrim's vanilla combat while keeping it fresh and incorporating a lot of what modders and players have learned by trying to make the game into Dark Souls. For a while there, I thought I was in the minority who wanted to keep a more vanilla-esque feeling as well as play the game in exclusively first-person.
I loved seeing the progress made by the modding scene in these combat overhauls. But skyrim game design isn't compatible with that kind of combat and let's be honest, the gameplay was still a bit clunky and rough arround the edges, it would never reach the quality of a souls gameplay. So those version of skyrim felt more like a modern mobile action game. This overhaul on the other hand makes me want to finally do a full playthrough of the game after years. (Instead of having a blast for 15 hours modding and twweaking the game and playing it for no more than 5)
Ngl, I tried out the SkyrimSouls mod…it’s fun…but no. I’m happy being my own vanilla chop chop self.(I got shower timed constantly trying to play the mod)
The first time I modded skyrim, I essentially turned it into clunky dark souls. Then, I lost all of my mods and began actually playing dark souls. Coming back to modding this beautiful game, I can't bring myself to make it anything else than what it was intended to be. Your modding taste is a breath of fresh air, and I wish I had stuck closer to vanilla in my earlier builds. You have more than earned my subscription, sir.
What I did honestly was just use blade and blunt, ordinator apocalypse and way of the monk. I don't know if I'm on expert or legendary but it's very fun. I can kill most enemies in 2-4 hits but they kill me in 1 since monk relies on having no armor. It made most weapons other then fist kinda useless since they don't do any damage but it made me think about new ways to play. Now sneaking is mandatory and I have to have it high to knock someone out. Use that with ghost walk and trip wire you can take an enemy out of a group teleport back trip oncoming enemies knock them out while out and if one gets up I NEED to cast stoneflessh to survive more then 1 or 2 hits but then I have to decide between healing, defense, attacking and stamina. It does take away the use of most low level melee but I've never had to actually think strategically about what spells I had to use in Skyrim and as I unlock more perks like tripwire with ordinator the combats the same but you have so many tools
I love the idea of a smoother vanilla combat instead of turning skyrim into a clunky dark souls with jiggle physics. It also makes the game less challenging by adding s and dodging. It's just not made to be played like that. Sure, vanilla has ice skating but it's even that bad, it is pretty fluid for what it is. Not to mention with some great 1st person animation mods we can keep the combat to 1st person entirely! Great list of mods. Simonrim is a great set of mods!
I've been saying the same thing. Dark Soul's combat has no place in Skyrim. It's like ramming a square peg into a round hole. It just doesn't work. Why not just play a Dark Soul's game instead. There is a mod that fixes the ice skating issue. It's called "Ice skating fixed for real - No more attack sliding movement."
Yes, something I really don't like about souls wannabe, aside the over the top animations, is it gives players abilities and tools that weren't in the base game, like dodge for instance, but not the npcs. So there's this weird dichotomy between the player and the npcs where you come from different games. And anyway, because of the engine, no amount of modding can suppress the clunkiness, so trying to emulate pirouetting characters is, in my opinion, destined to fail.
I think I'm going to finally give it a go. After 3 days messing around with Precision, MCO, and the tons of the movesets for MCO, I'm defeated. All of them look great but feel like shit. Half of the time the attacks are registered, animations glitch out, power attacking becomes a chore _(sometimes power attacks consume the energy, but the animation doesn't play)_, sometimes parrying near enemies trigger backstabs and you one-shot everyone. It's a mess. Trying to solve Skyrim's mechanical issues with flashy animations simply doesn't work.
Simon Magnus' gameplay mods are fantastic for people who want a light LO, while having majorly substantial changes. I decided to make the change to their stuff a year ago and it was the first time I really did a complete Skyrim playthrough, due to how clean and un-intrusive the features are implemented. On top of having a clear design goal with no bloat.
@@mithras666 You can do quite alot with just an esp. However, blade and blunt is much more than that. If you happen to open the file archive you will see there is a dll file in there(among other files obviously). Since you don't seem to know what that is I will explain. That is an SKSE plugin. One that I worked very hard on making. It required me to spend hours and hours writing C++ code and reverse engineering parts of a disassembled Skyrim exe, so that it can hook into the game and allow blade and blunt to do the things it does.
Cool.I also like the vanilla combat for the most part. I dislike the heavy dodge mod focus for most other combat videos and load orders. So, a vanilla plus combat is amazing. Can't wait to try it out.
I also love how the injury system meshes well with vanilla instead of just dumping a bunch of new items and systems that don't really connect to the base game.
Absolutely love this, so many combat overhauls either change very little or radically change the game trying to emulate a from software demon souls clone. I've only watched a couple of videos but your style and taste in modding seems to fit me perfectly. Vanilla+ is really where it's at for me for modding games.
Played Skyrim again due to my love for Dark and Darker, but I'm craving the RPG and Open world exploration. This video is the closest I can get for a dark & darker combat experience implemented in Skyrim and I thank you!!!
thank you, really, thank you. I tried modding some combat mods a while ago and skyrim just updated so all my saved files corrupted and i couldn't even start the game so i decided not to mod combat again, now with this i can have a fresher combat experience without having to worry that my game will break all over again THANK YOU
I'm glad for this vanilla style list, while sometimes its impressive seeing the elden ring/dark souls mechanic replacers, Its not really my style and I definitely prefer this.
Arrow Limiter is a good mod for reducing the reliance on stealth archery. By default limits you to 24 arrows but it's configurable, I usually set it to 12 at the start of the game and increase it from there. Not realistic to carry hundreds of arrows, even 24 is a big bundle. In big dungeons you have to scavenge enemy arrows which pairs nicely with ElSopa Quivers so you can see all the cool designs. You'll also run into encounters and realise you have only a few arrows so you have to play it differently.
Ha! I’m glad you covered blade & blunt as I’m currently (on Xbox) using Simonrim AIO which includes that, and I didn’t know most of this about it. So thanks, Legend.
Holy shit, i think i found my perfect loadout. I'm new to pc skyrim and this addresses nearly everything i wanted to fix about vanilla combat without turning it into dark souls. I already friggin have dark souls, i don't need it in my Skyrim
Ok holy moly, this is actually what I was dreaming in my teen years. All of this mod is still quite faithful to what modern combat of skyrim looks like. Hopefully all of this feature except for magic sneak attack is a staple for the next elder scroll game whenever it released. Good List.
Animated armoury OAR + valvaryn+ valvalis visceral movement + verolevi animations + EVE no more skating+ sekiro combat ESL lite + maxsu block overhaul, wider block, combat pathing revolution. Some great mods here. Some I've not heard of, some I've seen & tried but looks like I'll have to "upgrade" to Anniversary edition because they're not working even with the right Script extender for Special edition. I rarely use 2 handed weapons but those changes are gorgeous!
This mod list but without archery locational damage and almost all the simonrim mods (I refrain from using arena or starfrost and aetherius because I like racial powers) is peak vanilla plus imo
I like this idea but what I’d really like to see is just a little more impact from melee weapons and perhaps a more realistic blocking animation while not changing a thing about archery. I don’t want to feel like I’m playing a totally different game. I just want melee to do what it’s supposed to like archery and sneak do what they’re supposed to.
Fantastic video. This list has made me reinstall skyrim to give it all a go. Question though, the white slashing effect that appears when your weapon makes contact, which mod is that from?
Precision is nice but functionally seems to be a first person mod only. Weapon swing animations are horizontal and with Precision that means you can't hit small or hunched over enemies. In first person your swings follow your crosshair but on third person swings don't aim. You can get animation replacers to make weapons swings vertical but then that beats the point of the mod of having accurate collision for wide swings.
What mod causes them to fall to the ground when hit while staggered without killing them? Like at 1:28 when he hits the bandit and he falls down without dying?
Hey man, great video! I have been checking some of your videos and they helped me a lot. Would like to ask though, how do you make the camera stay over your shoulder on third person with your weapon unsheathed? Im kinda new to skyrim modding and had some trouble finding how to do it. Thanks again!
Good video man, love the vibes. You just sold me Blade & Blunt, but I have a question. What mod are you using that makes enemies fall when getting hit with an attack of opportunity?
A little late to the party but what were your weapon and armor mods? really cool armor in this that kept the vanilla feel. Great mod combo btw, I like that it didn't totally change the core gameplay while still upgrading the feel of combat.
I've noticed some animations in this video that aren't covered in the list of mods, specifically these knockdowns at 0:38, 0:42, 1:25, and 1:35, as well as this club at 0:47 that seems to have its own animations not listed in the mods showcased in this video. Are they part of the mods showcased or are there others from previous videos I've missed? I'm not being nitpicky, I just want to have the best experience going back to modded Skyrim for the umpteenth time.

I honestly hate the idea of turning skyrim into dark souls and then calling it "next gen". Its so lazy and overdone, I really wish there were more people passionate about making the game better instead of making the game another game.
That’s entirely subjective. Another game might have good mechanics that would play nicely with the vanilla game. Importing that would make the game better. If you don’t like what a mod does, simply don’t install it.
@@ChadKakashihe’s not taking shots at the mod, he’s taking a shot at the youtuber advertising this combat as better instead of different. I’d agree, if you want to actually turn Skyrim into a nextgen game you can’t give it a different shitty games signature mechanics. If anything a kcd or mordhau system would be an “upgrade”
@@ChadKakashi I know I know, just a little tired with the lack of variety in the mod community. Obviously nothing against the mod devs themselves but I wish we could see a more improved vanilla combat system you know? My mod load remained small for combat for so long because very few really cared about first person combat. To each their own ig.
Did you even watch the entire video or even just the beginning? He just mentioned mods like blade and blunt and precision it just makes vanilla combat more immersive because the vanilla combat is very VERY oversimplified. And dark souls combat looks very different to what I see here
Sorry but what mod do you use that makes your character carry the sword over the shoulder in first person while the sword is drawn out as showed in the video?
For blades and blunt What do you recommend for fighting with magic? since apparently the wards are the only thing that protects you and the destruction magic only does damage without benefiting from the mechanics of the mod
This is just what I've been looking for and not some clunky combat animations that turns Skyrim into Chinese bootleg mmorpgs So how heavy scripted are these mods combined?
hope you enjoy - as always leave any feedback you have !
hey redshift! do you know if this mod setup is compatible with violens killmove mod?

What is the shiny sword model you are holding at 12:28? Looks so good.
Radzig Longsword
@@redshift1 Quite nice! Thank you. :)
Thank you for this. All the video I see on this turn the game into janky Dark Souls when that's not what I want at all
I wanted to like precision but I had nothing but issues with it. Shame, because it's such a cool concept.
Great video! Thank you so much for the work!
Magic sneak attacks has not been working for quite some time sadly. It will give you the message and sound but damage is not actually increased.
And dark souls combat looks very different to what I see here
@@angryvaultguy Yeah? I did watch the video. Am I not allowed to talk about souls like mods?
I would use precision but it just simply isn't meant for vanilla attacks. NPCs will miss constantly. It's the most obvious when NPCs use daggers
Sorry but what mod do you use that makes your character carry the sword over the shoulder in first person while the sword is drawn out as showed in the video?
It's an animation from CGO that I stole
What mod makes the guards look like that at 6:31 ?
Sons of Skyrim
For blades and blunt What do you recommend for fighting with magic? since apparently the wards are the only thing that protects you and the destruction magic only does damage without benefiting from the mechanics of the mod
This is just what I've been looking for and not some clunky combat animations that turns Skyrim into Chinese bootleg mmorpgs
So how heavy scripted are these mods combined?
not very - runs fine on my 1000 mod set up, so i imagine it will be on yours as well
Apart from precision, I think I will try all of them out. Though I am not sure if Mysticism should replace Odin
they're both great - just personal preference really
At 1:20 your character has an idle animation with a 2 handed sword. What animation mod is this? I have been looking for something like that.
Absolutely Average Greatsword animations
@@redshift1 thank you so much!
