  • While on our recent camping trip, I found myself surrounded by juniper trees that all had such unique personalities! This one in particular was standing alone in the middle of a clearing, practically begging me to paint it! So I did :)

    I just want to say that I am so very grateful to you, you not only teach us how to achieve the results we want, you also teach us that it is okay not to paint everything completely flawlessly, you teach us at the same time (at least for me) a good way to deal with anxiety, not just for painting, but also generally.
    And the only way to learn is to make mistakes, that´s a lesson I got to learn from my grandmother as a child, still applies in every aspects in your life :)
    So, thank YOU for sharing :)
    And I hope you´re having (or had) an awesome time on your camping trip! :D

We all appreciate that you give us some of your valuable time to share parts of your adventure. We can travel with you and be with you for a small part of the day. I have been following you for some time now and I thank you for sharing your enthusiasm, your talent, and your encouragement to us, especially newbies like me. I, too, am traveling this year in a small camper, currently in Utah and have seen plenty of odd shaped junipers, but never thought to paint one! I, too, am wanting to paint plein air, and am excited to follow you through your experience with it. Perfect timing for me as we explore our beautiful country and I try to capture the moment on canvas.

    Jane, this is coming out so well done. I do think it is one of your very strong paintings. It is so great that you are traveling and able to capture your feelings on canvas. I had the opportunity to visit an exhibit at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art that was the "The Beyond". this was a great exhibit including many of the works of O'Keeffe and the works of many contemporary artists who were working in some of her styles. One artist, Cynthia Daignault had produced many 8x10 inch paintings as she traveled from one coast to the other. The exhibit had 360 paintings. These were very quick, fresh, and lively. She took many photos and then worked at the studio to complete this work. So, I feel what you are doing is so exciting and this will be a trip that is captured in the paint brush strokes. So well done, Jane. Thanks for sharing.

    Question, what do you do with your pallet when you’re finished? Do you use the stay wet pallet? Please talk about pallet use

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  5 років тому

      Hi, Valerie!! No, I don't use a stay-wet palette because I only put out little bits of paint at a time. I rarely have enough paint left over to worry about saving/wasting. When I'm done with a paper plate palette, I just let it dry, and I'll typically reuse it again and again and again. A glass palette, once it's dry, I spray it with a water bottle and then scrape it off with a palette knife. If you can get a handle on paint management, there's rarely a need for a stay-wet palette, unless you're doing a lot of plein air painting. Just make sure you're putting out very small amounts of paint. Remember that you can always get more paint! I hope that helps!

  • @chriswhitehouse8982
    @chriswhitehouse8982 5 років тому

    Jane, very nice painting. I will be interested in seeing you do some en plein air painting. I am also interested in giving it a try, but I wonder how the acrylics will do outside. I assume they will dry even faster in the sun and wind? I have only rarely seen any artist paint en plein air using acrylics vs. oils. By the way, I agree with others here that you look particularly beautiful in this video...must be all the fresh air!

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  5 років тому

      Thank you so much, Chris! The cool thing with acrylic is that you have so many mediums at your disposal that can make it easier. That and the very nature of plein air pretty much demands that you paint a little differently than you do in the studio. If you're trying to capture the essence of a scene, you may only have a few minutes to do so before it really changes, so you have to work quickly. I'm really looking forward to exploring those things with all of you!!

    • @chriswhitehouse8982
      @chriswhitehouse8982 5 років тому

      @@PaintingwithJane Perhaps think about using Golden Open acrylics when doing outside painting? I've seen someone online use them en plein air and said they really made a difference. Of course, that would require you have to have whole separate set of paints just for your outside painting :-(

    Wht does the matt medium do in this painting ?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  5 років тому +1

      Thank you so much! I prefer matte medium to water. I typically don't use a lot of water because the matte medium is more versatile, helps with blending, makes the paint a little more transparent if I want it to be, and keeps it wet just a little longer than water :)
