- Oh, man. Oil paint is so scary! It’s SO toxic and smelly and hard to clean up and takes FOREVER to dry, and did I mention how scary oil paint is?! It’s terrifying! Does that sound like you? Now, I know there are a lot of people who are curious about oil paint and would really love to have the versatility of working with this medium but have heard all of those scary myths about it. These are the very same myths that kept me from using oil paint for a very long time. But I’ve been painting with oil for a couple of years now, and today, I’m going to bust wide open the ten myths about oil paint that you might believe are true.

I live in a small town that was blessed to have in-person classes taught in a manner similar to Bob Ross's at a small art supply store. I inquired whether I should start with an oils class or an acrylic class and was told that oils would be easier for a beginner because of the inherent flexibility. I tried both eventually and I agree that, with good instruction, oils were easier to work with.
Thank you for dispelling some of the myths from oil painting. Was reluctant to start oil painting again because of possible fumes.
Thank you for the great information. I just started using oil paints. I like that the colors are more vibrant than acrylic. The only problem they are much more expensive.

Amazing video and as per usual, Jane explains everything really well. I would add another tip-water mixable oil paints (like Cobra or Artisan) are such a great alternative, especially for a biginner!
Think I'm with you here. Couldn't wait to start so have just bought starter Pack of the Cobra WSP. Hopefully Jane will let us Know what she thinks of them too.....
Great video. I still tend to stick to acrylic for my style because it's high contrast and I need to paint sharp lines over contrasting colors immediately, and oil is too wet for that. But someday I'd like to venture more into the oil paint territory if I do something less abstract. Keep up the great work btw.

I wondered about the investment necessary to get started - could you start with just 8 -10 tubes of paint and then? solvents necessary? And what do you do with the cleaning solvent after cleaning the brushes? Look forward to seeing your newest workshop on Oils.
For sure! You really don't need more than a handful of paints. 2 of each primary and white and you're good. I cover all of the solvent handling and everything you need to know in the course. Basically, though, you never, ever, NEVER have to dispose of solvents! Honestly, they're really not required, though I do prefer to use them.

Starting with oil paintings I was told I had a very distinct stylized style of painting. I'd never be a fine artist till I learned the rules in order to break them in stylized painting. I wanted my time painting to be fun. It wasn't I quit. Why bother? Then I found you on UA-cam and acrylics and fun painting. Thank you for your passion for teaching. Anita

Wonderful! Thank you for sharing these myths! I never use solvents these days. I wipe all the excess paint off the brushes with paper towels and use lava soap followed by Masters Brush Cleaner….problem solved! Looking forward to more videos!💚💚💚💚

Well done. I love painting with oils. I'm learning acrylics (been using them about 4 years). I find oils to be much easier, but I'm determined to learn acrylics, also.
Hi Jane, I have invested in GEORGIAN OIL PANTS WHICH I LOVE. USED TO BUY WATER/OIL PAINTS AND HATED THEM BUT I HAVE A TUB OF THEM. I AM HOPING TO TAKE YOUR CLASSES AS I HAVE REGITERED. SO EXCITED...I NEVER USE TERPINTINE...GAVE UP ONLY BECAUSE I DIDNT KNOW HOW BUT DID TRY A FEW ZOOM CLASSES WITH A GREAT ARTIST FROM IRELAND. THAT WAS PAINT ALONG NOT INSTRUCTIONAL. MY PAINTS ARE SITTING HERE AND AM READY TO GO!!!

Wow, I didn't know that you was oil painting now!, I remember when you said you wouldn't use them lol😉, oil paint will always be my first love but... I have been playing around with coloured pencils since covid lockdown, I was often left twiddling my thumbs waiting for my oil paint layers to dry, even with an alkyd medium it can still take around 6 to 8 hours to dry, so I got myself a handful of coloured pencils and began drawing with them, beginning to really like them.

Thanks for sharing with us. I use baby oil to help get all the paint out of my brushes, then use a paper towel and wipe off the brush. I have used it for many years

Hi Jane! I agree. Oil painting isn't at all how it's been made out to. It really isn't too much different from acrylic. In fact, I've done a couple of your past acrylic tutorials in oil and they turned out great. I would really love to see you do an oil painting tutorial some time in the near future. Thanks for this video you addressed many concerns I've had about oil paint. The one I still worry about is the flammable nature of oil paint, not just the mediums. Could you address that please? We had a fire in the past few years in my city, (Texas can get really hot in summer.) The fire was the outside of a church being painted. The fire department traced the cause to improperly discarded oil rags. :-( just added to my hesitation. Thank you again for the video really helpful.
I absolutely go over that in my course! Basically, I always lay my rags and paper towels flat to dry. Just don't ball it up and throw it in the trash. It's really not super flammable. Any oil can combust if disposed of improperly.
Learned in Oils back in the 80s. I love the smell of the paints themselves. Where I struggled was with the thinners and mediums of the time. I have not-so-fond memories of painting in the winter with the windows wide opened, and getting headaches. As for dry time; I was a heavy painter. I loved making textures, so my work always took forever to dry. Months. Then there was finding that spot to let it dry. When I came back to painting, I went with Acrylics because of those issues. It's really interesting to hear that they have some VoC free mediums now. May have to revisit oils....edit. As for cleaning your brushes. I used to use a bar of Ivory soap. worked amazing.
Yes, I've heard Ivory is a favorite for brush cleaning. I think you'd really enjoy the newer oil painting mediums today. Especially the non-toxic ones like Gamblin's solvent-free gel. That's my favorite!

My online course will be available on my website in April. I don't know for sure when I'll do any oil on UA-cam, though. I'm so busy trying to get this and a few other things going that I haven't even thought about it!
All I do is oil paint. I started out with acrylic and it just dried way too fast, so I changed to oil and the clean up, the blending, the flow of the brush was smoother, oil when dry just seems a little brighter, more vibrant, all to me is just all around better, easier and less stress than acrylic. But this is just my opinion. When I'm painting I get lost in it, all my problems, stress and the world seems to fade away. Jane, I've commented a lot about you're the main reason I am painting today, because I almost gave up; it seemed like i was messing up more than creating, but I watched you show how to use the brush and blend, etc. Your voice is soothing, and it helps that you are easy on the eyes lol. Thank you for you.

Thank-you Jane, you are among the first I followed when I first picked up a brush and acrylic paint. I was always curious about oil painting. I'm mostly concerned about having a ventilated space. Is a room with a window enough? How bad are fumes? I live where winters are extremely cold and summers extremely warm and humid. So I mostly use my furnace-heat pump and have air ducts, should I perish the thought of oil painting?
I honestly haven't had any issues just painting in my house, but I don't let the solvents sit open. That's really where most of the fumes come from. I also use low VOC mediums or non-toxic mediums. Trust me when I say that using solvents and mediums like the ones Gamblin makes, and using them the way I'll show you in the online course, you shouldn't have any issues at all! Remember that the paint itself has absolutely no fumes!

I also love water mixable oils
Premixing colours is just for convenience really, you don't have to mix every single colour just some basic hues that you need, everything else can be brush mixed on the fly as you are painting, using those premixes, adjust the hue if you need to, lighten them, darken them, desaturate them if you need to, once you get the hang of doing that it's actually quite helpful, any leftovers need not be wasted, you can get empty paint tubes, mix leftover paint into one solid colour, you will get some kind of interesting brown or grey, tube it and write on the tube (it's always fun inventing names for them...."grumpy sky grey"....or...."muddy poopy brown"😁), they often come in very useful.
Jane, love your channel! I have a question about oil paints. I bought a box of oil paints about three years ago; never been used. Is there a time limit for using oil paints? Many thanks for this myth busting video about oil paints. :)
As long as the paint is still soft, it should be fine. Some of the oil may have separated, but that's normal. Just mix it back in with a palette knife :)

I've never tried them. I've only ever heard that they can be weird and finicky. It's just worth it to me to use regular oils.
Jennifer, personally, I started with Acrylic past August. Got oils yoo after few months but still havent tried them.
i did get water soluble oils to explore. (Note i do go alla prima) it felt more creamy, thick. but the mechanics and washing etc. -> Same as acrylic.
Not sure what’s the difference with regular oil as i keep postponing it. Lol. I think I will try as Jane posts the tutorials for that.

Hi Jennifer, I am using the water mixable oils and the name makes it a little confusing. You should use water mixable mediums, not water to mix. You can use water but it fills the sheen a little and you risk underbinding. Water mixable means you can clean the brushes with water and don’t need smelly solvent. You can also use regular oil paints with them and oil mediums but then you would need solvents to clean. I absolutely love the water mixable and right now I’m testing Janes cloud brush technique with them. Sooo much easier than acrylics, just need to use less paint and a very very tiptoe technique to blend. Hope that helps.
i have oil paints but i get frusted and put them up im so used to useing acrylic that i just go back to useing acrylics
I have been a fan of Jane's since 2016 and it is great seeing this video on oil painting. I started with oils and watching Jane's vids helped me transform to acrylic.
Oil painting is wonderful and the smells of oils reminds me of art, always has and always will. And she is right, it is not difficult or overwhelming. The one thing I do find a bit overwhelming is disposal of solvents and paint-waste (the paint collected at the bottom of the solvent can) Where I live it is illegal to put those in the trash or down the toilet. So, we have to go to a gas station and pay them to take it away.
There is kinda a disagreement in the oil community (maybe I am just over blowing it a bit) that brushes do not need to be cleaned at all, at least if they are used regularly. There is another video (I do not like to drop names on other channels, so google it) where they suggest that wiping the dirty brush with a paper towel is fine, and in some instances, a little dirty brush is good to bring colors down. Use some kind of brush to keep the brushes wet so paint does not ruin the brush.

Honestly, though, there's absolutely no reason to dispose of the solvents! I use them until they're gone! No disposal, ever! I do agree that brushes don't need to be soap and water washed every time. I certainly don't. A little leftover pigment never hurt anyone 😉

What about paper towels used? We where told they could combust? How can we at home dispose of them properly??
I was the same way, being scared of oils but now that’s all I’ve been using for three years and can’t even use acrylic anymore
I still have a soft spot for acrylic, and I think I'll probably always use it in some way, but oil really does have my heart!

I've seen acrylic artists mix all their paints before using them to work. I though how time consuming. What's your take on water soluble oils used to be called Woils?
Yeah, I've seen acrylic artists do that too, and I'm always concerned about how much of it is going to get wasted, lol. I've never used water miscible oils, but I've heard mixed reviews on them. For me, it's just best to stick with the traditional thing.

You absolutely can! You can't do it the other way, though. But yes, a lot of artists do enhance acrylic paintings with oil details 😊
This is an informative presentation, but my hesitation about expanding into oils is purely about the economics. Ounce for ounce, a top quality professional grade oil paint (Old Holland Classic, Schminke Mussini, or Williamsburg - or even Winsor & Newton Artists Oils, if you truly must look to minimize supplies expenses) costs far more than the top quality professional grade of acrylic paints I use (heavy body Golden Artists Colors). On top of that, you have to buy the various mediums (oils, solvents, and who knows what else) and many additional new brushes (e.g., $145 for the newer Painting With Jane set of brushes) - and there will be many more on top of those. And then there are new costs in terms of organization and storage of oil painting supplies & brushes - not to mention the additional space needed to store it all.

Ha! Don't be afraid! I promise it's nowhere near as scary as all of us acrylic artists have been lead to believe 😊
I use a solvent called 'Zest it', it's non-toxic, non flammable, environmentally friendly and smells like orange juice, it's a bit spendy but it's worth it for the peace of mind. If you get it on your hands it can dry out the skin but it's nothing that a good hand lotion can't cure.
How do you dispose of cloths and paper towels with solvent on them?
I cover that a bit in my course. Basically, lay them flat to let them dry. Once they're dry, throw them away. Or you can put them in a container of water and throw them out.
Hi Jane how long before you can sell oil paintings?
As soon as they're varnished! If you use Gamblin's varnish, you can varnish as soon as the paint is dry to the touch. All other varnished need to be applied after the paint has cured, which could be months. I hope that helps!

Stupid question..But could I use the hairdryer to quicken the drying process while oil painting?
No, unfortunately. It's really a chemical process that happens when the paint is exposed to oxygen, not an evoporative process like with acrylics. Not a stupid question at all!
K so I was told that any rags and paper towels with solvent on them can spontaneously combust if not disposed of properly and I forgot how to dispose of them properly.
I cover that in my course! Basically, just unfold them and let them dry flat.

My main hesitation has always been what I've been told over and over and that is it's more expensive, are oil paints and brushes more expensive?
Same brushes, like I said in the video. But yes, the paints themselves are more expensive. However, I find that I "waist" a lot less of the paint since acrylic dries so fast. There's always some amount of waste with acrylic.
