World renowned drum tech, Joe Slaby, graciously provided a detailed gear list of the components that Danny used for this particular show (gear list below). Joe emphasized that the setup is constantly changing and evolving, so the list is just a snapshot of the decisions for that day.
Danny's Gear in this Video:
The drums are Sonor SQ2 with Vintage series lugs. Sonor made Danny two versions of this touring kit, one beech, one maple. These toms are beech, these kicks are maple. The kicks and toms are wrapped with a design by Alex Grey. The shells on the smallest tom are thickest and they get thinner as the drum diameter increases.
Drums:
The main snares are two Sonor HLD590’s (one with 10 lugs, one with 12 lugs) both 14” x 8” bronze drums. Also, he has a new Dunnett 14” x 8” purple bronze snare and a Sonor 14" x 8" beech snare that has a wrap that matches the toms.
From left to right, the drums are: 8" x 8" and 10" x 10" SQ2 rack toms, 14" rototom with custom mount by Brian Totten (this drum was formerly owned by Terry Bozzio!), 16" x 14" and 18" x 16" SQ2 floor toms with legs, 16" x 22" SQ2 Gong Drum (with Danny Carey's portrait by Alex Grey), 18" x 22" and 20" x 24" SQ2 Bass Drums.
Cymbals:
All cymbals are paiste except where noted;
- 22" "Monad" Danny Carey signature dry heavy ride
- pair 12” Stewart Copeland signature hi hats
- 18" Signature full crash with 2002 5” cup chime inverted on top
- 18" Signature power crash with Hammerax 6” bell inverted on top
- 20" Signature power crash with 5” Hammerax FX inverted on top
- 24” NOVO china
- 22" signature thin China
- Noiseworks stack, 18" china, 11” top
- “Twenty” series 10" splash with Dark Energy 8" splash (inverted on top)
- 8” 3000 series bell with 6” 2002 accent (inverted on top)
- Cup Chime #1 8” and Cup Chime #3 7” (inverted on top)

- Rupert Neve 16 channel summing mixer for all electronic drum components to FOH
- Original Korg Wave drum ('94) with custom rack mount by Brian Totten

Hardware:
- Pearl "Eliminator" Kick pedals and remote hi hat Danmar 206 beater and blue cam on kicks.

Hey all! Be sure to check the video description for a full gear list of Danny’s setup for this show.
FYI, Danny has been on four Modern Drummer Magazine covers since 1997. Subscribe to the digital magazine to read them all! (Cover links are in the description)
What a drumset! Bellissimo.😍😍😍 Terry Bozzio set? When you make a video?
BEST BRILLIANT DRUMMER 🥁 OF THE WORLD!..🌎..it's beyond Amazing how super smart Danny really is! Super Professional Drummer!..ive seen him play 8 different beats poly rhythms at the same time!! His beats are super hard to play! Crazy time changes!! Thank you "Modern Drummer"! Best DRUMMER IN THE WORLD!! we hope you guys can put more video footage of this Drum God Living Legend!!..\TOOL/!😎☝️🤟
I love how humble he is. He acts as if he is not the best drummer on earth
It's just makes a great thing even better, such an awesome human
Are you joking ? He is a good drummer but not even top 100
Danny is a good drummer, but c’mon dude: Greater On Earth? You need to listen to music outside of the Tool Catalog. FYI, he’s the only one of the three that F’d up the Rush song at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute.
@@Hhhlll7778 you're high as hell...
totally. I mean I guess you can argue he isn't the best in the world, but he is absolutely within the top 10 easily, in my subjective opinion.@@scottybeats5328
I love how casual Danny said he goes through 2 or 3 snare heads a night 🫠
Came here to say the same 😆 wtf?? 😅😂
I saw TOOL in Shreveport years ago. When the show was over he tossed his sticks and heads out to the crowd.
right? 😳
Dude, that is f*cking BATSHIT. I've had the same heads on my snare for years, and I'm a pretty strong guy who hits hard. That's incredible he needs multiple each night 😮
To be fair, they probably sell them all on the next show and make $4k each drum head lol
Danny and Justin have always been the most open members of Tool, love seeing details of their gear
Actually I met Adam , total accident he was in a mall of all places with his wife and a couple others, just walked up to him with a friend of mine, told him to have a great show and that we would be there. We didn’t want to bother him with signatures, he was very cool , very gracious, exactly the person you’d think he is.
Everyone needs to compensate for Maynard's lack of social battery.
Maynard’s done plenty of interviews over the course of his career, always explaining his influences and the ideas behind his lyrics etc. what more do you want lmao, Adam though yes he is definitely the least vocal of the group but has done plenty of interviews as well, to be fair from his very first interview he said “I hate talking” so he’s honest about his position with it, but over time he has come out of his shell quite a bit
They are the heart of the beast
It’s always there!
This is why he's one of the most well-respected drummers in the world.
never heard of him and he's heavily invested in Aleister crowley you know the guy who wrote detailed instructions on how to murder, r@pe, torture a child?
The greatest
I know this is wishing for a lot, but man, a big fat drumeo feature with Danny would be an absolute dream, would love to just hear him talk about... Well. Drumming. For hours and hours. Such a unique brain on him.
Been saying that for a while now! Would love to see Danny Carey on Drumeo!!
I want him to do the series where they make drummers they doesn't know without hearing the original drum part. I comment on every video in that series asking for them to get him lol. But Tool has been touring hard for a while and are going to Europe too this summer, so prob not gonna happen yet. Maybe eventually!
@@veRGe02 That would be dream come true!
Rick Beato has done this! : )
Im just amazed at how humble Danny is. I saw them a month ago in OKC and purchased VIP tickets, and him and Justin were obviously the most cordial and friendly. You could definitely tell Adam was not comfortable around people, and thats who I was there to see the most, but they still came out after the warm up session (which was by far one of the coolest things ive ever seen) and took a pic. I was literally 3 feet from Danny and 10 from Adam. Danny shook everyones hand he walked past, and you could just see how nice of a guy he is by his interactions. They were all so cool, but I remember thinking, man, Danny is genuinely just a really nice dude.
I did two VIP shows. Got a fist bump from Danny when he saw my DC shirt, and Adam busting my chops when he wanted to talk about local comic book shops but I said I was from NJ (we were in Biloxi MS).
Danny is clearly the ambassador of the band to the fans. He's also the one most fans could have a beer with and go "dude!" and not set off red flags that can't be overcome.
How much did you pay for VIP shows?
@@paultullo3275how much did vip tickets cost you
I used to work as a stagehand/carpenter at the local arena, and when we worked Tool's 2010 tour, Danny walked through the loading dock afterward and said "thank you" to all us hardhat-wearing plebs. Very classy guy. I was already a fan, but my respect went up several notches that day.
Danny is kinda like your friends dad whos a little awkward but he comes down to the basement while you guys are playing video games to talk for a while and youre secretly stoked hes there.
That is a really good example of what Danny seems to be like. That video of him playing with the daughter's band at her school for a talent show or Christmas play or something and he was totally awkward and like someone's goofy dad playing with some 12 yr old kids in front of all the parents, he was a 12 year old kid again except that he's really the best working drummer of our time and one of the best drummers ever. But you wouldn't know it as he's blushing and laughing the whole time. Classic
@@13_13k one of the rare, truly humble rock gods.
Damn. Ive been waiting over 20 years for a video like this.
So have we all. Such a shame it was conducted by this guy though. I feel like Carrey could have done a better job by himself.
@@borragoYep, the host talked over Danny at every opportunity and added their own un-needed input.
One of the best drummers of all time just shooting the breeze and sharing his wisdom and knowledge like it’s no big deal. What a guy.
Ikr. Danny is so noticeably approachable and likeable. So knowledgeable yet so modest and selfless about his craft. Will constantly talk about his heros/influences, give credit to all the people that do all this stuff for him. He's such a great person on top of talented and intelligent
one of the best.. of all time..? how do you figure? way to fan like. He is just a drummer with good taste and a cool band. No more no less. Humble and does the job.
@@morbidmanmusic If you think Danny Carey isn't BARE MINIMUM one of the Top 20 best drummers of all time, you're coping HARD.
“I’m not warmed up”… then produces a god damn masterclass hahaha greatest drummer ever! 💜💜💜
Let’s also appreciate Joe Slaby for taking the time to write a list of all drums parts!
Yeah but he forgot to capitalize Paiste on one line.
Joe Paul is just as nice a person as the guys in the band.
Amen to that what a great run through of kit and great questions!!
Yeah, great if I ever plan to take on a second mortgage to purchase whatever is even still available in one way or another. =']
More of a Danny Carey fan than a Tool fan. He’s such a cool dude.
He is isn’t he? That’s why I love his drumming style! He’s one of my favourite drummers of all time, right up there with John Stanier, Bill Bruford, Abe Cunningham, and David Silveria.
@@ryanrooprai5104 Wow! I’m a huge fan of all those drummers that you mentioned! 👍
This dude is not just a drummer. He’s a percussionist he plays way to many things outside of drums to be considered a pure drummer
A drumcussionist!
Best drummer in the World!!.."DANNY CARRY =LIVING LEGEND "!! DRUM GOD!!!!!🤟🤟🤟🥁🥁🥁
@@drunken-skunk he is the equivalent of Neil Peart imo when it comes to his impact on drumming he’s amazing, and an amazing human being I’ve never seen or heard one bad thing about the guy. So glad to have a hero like that!!
@@lokinslawomir0793 ..indeed! Danny Carry is super smart..like a nerd wizard on those drums! He's super kind and humble to people...imagine if the whole world was that nice and kind like Danny...the world would be a waaaay better place to enjoy and live! I mean people wise!...I LOVE \TOOL/!😎☝️🤟🤟💪🦾
@@lokinslawomir0793not sure if you heard...but if Rush returns for a couple more tours, DC will be the chosen one to fill the NP throne
Absolute drum nerd right there. He’s seems like he would be clumsy because he’s so tall…but plays with such finesse. You’d never guess he is a rock star. Awesome personality.
I thought the same thing when I first started listening to TOOL and seen a picture of DC with the other members. I thought at first he looked almost awkward (probably not the correct term) behind a drum kit but he’s a commander sitting there in his space. I’ve been obsessed with drums since I was in elementary school, and DC is by far my favorite drummer/musician
16 year old me is soooo happy. 35 year old me is even happier. Thanks for doing this Danny
Is 16 year old here now
15 and 47 🤘 🔧
very similar, one year removed
Ditto!!
2 year old me is really happy 46 year old me is even happier
Ladies and Gentlemen.... Mr. Danny Carey!
He's a World Heritage Man! Enjoy!
Thanks and Cheers....from Rosario, Argentina. 😉
Host did a great job not acting like he was as important as Danny. Much respect for humble hosting, get this guy to interview more drummers please!
What?! He barely let's him finish, then asking about the next thing, interrupts all the time. A terrible person to do Interviews
@@thepluggy1 That very well could be on the producer. He definitely rushed through something that could've easily gone on for more than an hour. Did pretty well other than that.
@@thepluggy1 Oh god, don't watch the Rick Beato interview if you think this is bad. He cuts him off every other sentence.
@CaptainJimp man, I know, so bad, just let the guy talk his craft please 🤣
They say that whenever you hear thunder, it's just Danny practicing.
I know absolutely nothing about drumming, and am still mesmerized by his kit and the sounds he’s able to make with it. Very doubtful he will ever see this comment, but shout out to my friend Cody for introducing me to Tool back in the late 90’s. Much love to him, & the whole Tool crew, & community.
.. everybody needs a Cody in theyr life ...
🤘🔧💯
Danny brings a whole new meaning to technical drummer when ya realize what all he uses beyond an acoustic set
Those Mandala pads are so cool.
There is a lot to learn from Danny every time he speaks. He is the drummer’s drummer
Imagine being the greatest drummer on Earth, and being this humble and open
If you haven't seen Tool live, you're truly missing out
13x for me and ALWAYS AMAZING!!
Seen them last show last run in Las Vegas . great seats. Epic Fantastic Legendary and just an overall awesome experience.
When I saw Tool...they were Amazing!..but it's so obvious "Danny Carry is the only fun 1 to watch"! He makes Tool!..plus there was sooo many drummers there..and I remember after the show...alot of people felt like crap! Because it almost made me quit! Lol..because he's sooo fucken good! Danny can.out play any one in the world!! Because he's the only drummer in the world that can play 9 different poly rhythms at the same f.n..time!! Your mind has to be super smart for that hard shit to.play!!
Like when Joe Perry saw Jeff Beck. "I need to go home and practice"
What a chill dude! The fact that he always credits his team and band, always refreshing to see guys at this level keeping themselves grounded and not letting ego takeover
This is actually so much better than expected. Danny elaborates so effortlessly on his work.
Danny is probably the most humble superstar of all superstars. In his mind he’s just a regular dude
i had a chance too see this man from a distance in Feb 14th on a TOOL concert in LA.. he's absolutely one of the greatest musicians of all time..
thank you all for this video !!
His humility may be his greatest attribute. 🙏
Absolute Legend. 1 of 1. 🔥
Seeing Joe in the back ground watching this happen, dude you are so attentive to Danny it's amazing. I could tell you were watching closely incase Danny signaled or asked for anything. Drum Tech's just don't get the love they deserve (from music fans, needed to amend this. Danny Clearly sings your praises)!
Love the way, he jumps back on the kit at the end. Even though he was not expecting to play it. He's like, yeah, now let's go on the pads
Skinny Puppy for the WIN!! Thanks Danny
He’s such a beast of a drummer. Yet he’s just as nice as can be.
I love how he had Alex Gray paint his drum set. They been using Alex forever now. Alex is a amazing artist. Always liked his artwork.
I've had 3 run in's with Danny in the last 25yrs. He's truly one of the most humble and genuine people you will ever meet. No ego and such a beast on the kit. A true ambassador for the drumming community.
Danny is the man. Not only one of the greatest drummers of all time, but also a genuinelly amazing guy who just loves the art of drumming.
These videos of Dani being released have made my year. He's so awesome.
10:00 skinny puppy - what an incredible, out of nowhere name drop.
I love that there’s been an influx of insight into DCs kit between professional videos and his, and his techs instagram pages
Drum tech: “So what type of percussion sounds do you want”
Danny:”yes”
*Emperor Palpatine voice*: all of them
Yes, when I saw that Rack i just knew Ceven Key would get a shout out, that whole setup is off the charts.
I would HATE to be this guys drum tech. Setting that thing up and tearing it down every night must be a fucking nightmare. Respect to that guy!
My favorite part of all this is how he basically has to replace every piece of the kit twice per show. What a monster!
He was just referring to the snare.
This has gotta be one of the best videos on UA-cam, Danny is the goat
Pneuma is around 30 millions views. But this one should be the follow up.
It seems like a great companion video to the Pneuma vid, considering the setup is very similar
Danny is the worlds best drummer period. 😅 id love 2 meet him
Always been a big fan of Danny and his stellar playing. Love to watch him play and he always seems so happy when he’s behind the kit. And although I’ve never met him I’m a bigger fan of the person he is. Through numerous interviews and such he just comes across as such a genuinely kind, likeable and humble guy.
The best drummer in the world❤
Been waiting since '96 for something like this. Thanks to Danny and MD for bringing us this insider masterpiece!
Gives new meaning to "marching to a different drummer". 😇
Such a humble person. Doesn't fully take credit for all of his musical brilliance, always deferring to people supporting his craft.
Such a kind and humble goat. 🤘😌
"Disposition", "Reflection", "Triad" live on the Lateralus tour😮 & "Third Eye Live(extended)" on the 2010 tour.
Just love that it doesn't matter if you're a newbie or the almighty DC himself: As first reaction after someone asks you to play something on your instrument you HAVE to say, that you're not warmed up
I'm 25, became a late Tool fan in '22. I wish I could have seen them in their early album phases, but I have already seen them twice this year and thinking about finishing the third leg in Europe. They won my heart and really have helped me through a lot in my life already. This band, should always be protected, at all costs by the Tool Army. They are just 4 geniuses. ❤️
I thought the same, being 38 and first hearing a tool record in '05... By that time they had already evolved twice and were finishing off the 10,000 days record. Being able to go back and find the earlier records and then a copy of salival was a great journey into how much a single band can "write", rather than producing the same sound over and over.
I seen them on the Aniema tour. This is Beck with Menard wore a blue speedo and painted his entire body blue. Of course, he’s well known for that now, but at the time it wasn’t such a famous singer. Back then I felt like I was seeing Pink Floyd or something like that. I knew I was witnessing something amazing.
@@DWatters-kp9wz wow you are very lucky, I love when people share their experiences with this band especially with previous legends that unfortunately have passed away. If I had a chance to go back in time, it will be definitely an Ænema concert hehe. If you go to their concert now, I can guarantee you, it will blow Pink Floyd and turn it into Blue Maynard 😂
Could watch Danny all day
It would be so bittersweet to be his drum tech. On one hand, you're the drum tech for Danny By God Carrey. On the other hand, damn that's alot of work setting up and taking down night after night.
His kit has definitely changed in the last 20 years
Nothing makes a music artist more happier in an interview then asking about their craft and contributions rather then the same pretentious cliche questions they get asked in most interviews. Danny is such a humble and down to earth guy that's a pleasure to listen to both conversely and musically. Tool is very much the sound and success of Danny's drum work on their albums and especially live. He's not only able to replicate what he does on the records while playing live but manages to add better elements that compliments the song even better then it does in the studio version. Salival is a great example of that as is various live shows on UA-cam. May Danny's work live on forever ✌🏽❤️
I would argue their craft and contributions are the cliché questions they're constantly being asked.
@@Shadovox not really, it's the gossip, personal shit and idiot non researched questions that are cliche and redundant.
The best drummer around by far. His approach and the parts he writes are insane.
Agreed 👍🏽. King Crimson and other drummers are the reason why Danny is an amazing drummer 🥁.
I feel lucky to have grown up during the career of the greatest drummer that ever lived.
2-3 snare heads every night is absolutely insane.
This might not be a popular opinion around here, but all I can think of is:
What a nightmare that must be having to deal with such a massive array of drums and cymbals.
His drum tech must be the hardest working tech in the business lol
Thank you Modern Drummer for featuring Danny Carey's rig! Danny will be a Modern Drummer Hall Of Fame drummer in the near future. 🥁🔥🤟🏻
Danny is the most incredible rock drummer alive today. Ever since I got my first copy of Undertow, every release since, I get excited to get my hands on them, so I can jump in, and just listen to the things he's done on the new album. Incredible stuff, and a true inspiration, but most importantly, he is a really nice and genuine person.
The GOAT. Got to be the last person to shake this guy's hand at the VIP in Eugene before the show. I guess that $700 DID count for SOMETHING. lmao, Best band ever. This rig is fucking insane.
Danny Carrey is a national treasure
What a genuinely kind person
Met DC after a Pygmy Love Circus show in Seattle, years ago. He was very cool and down to earth. Signed my Pygmy Love Circus poster, shook hands and he answered some of my questions about his kit. He’s been my favorite drummer for decades and I’m honored to have met him and talked a few minutes. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
This guy must make a solo record with drums pieces only. This short pad solo is something cosmic...
He's just so powerful ... 6 foot something with massive arm length ... can make the tone sound really good on any drum head and/or cymbal ...
Danny has to be a nicest happiest most humble musician I’ve seen ever.. really gracious and give it up to modern drummer for another great rig rundown!! 👍🙏
I’ve only watched 5 minutes and this kit is insane. 🤯
I can watch Danny drum all day. He’s an amazing drummer!!
Danny is such a living legend...TOOL is my all-time favorite band. What an incredible privilege to hear about his setup and equipment. Everything is a literal piece of art all on its own. I'm overwhelmed with the beauty and his raw talent and creativity. Thank you so much for allowing us to spend time with him....great job.
I now see Danny more like a classical composer after watching this
How long have people been waiting for this!? I hardly listen to tool and i still have been waiting for a rig rundown for most my life
His tech deserves 100K a year lmao
This shit is bonkers
It’s so amazing to hear him talk and he was such good friends with Neil Peart and Stuart Copeland as well as Terry Bozzio it’s crazy how all of them are so connected, relationship wise and then to hear Danny talk about his drums it almost sounds like Neil honestly, in a lot of ways
Danny saying "1/4, hell yeah" when mentioning taking any credit is the reason I love these guys.
The humblest of a man. So much respect for Danny.
That kit is 1 of 1 and Danny is 1 of 1. Decades of drum mastery, still evolving and creating new sounds and ideas. We need a new word to describe him, drummer just doesn't seem like enough.

Assholes the word is Musician with capital M
Percussionist
The glazing for Danny is insane. Calm down dude. He’s just a drummer. He’s not even the best drummer in this genre.
@@1dudecrush ugh oh, the opinion police are here. I will not calm down sir, you're going to have to arrest me.

Mr. Carey ..... my deepest respect!!!!
It's great to have someone like David Frangioni interview Danny and all these other drummers. David does a great job and has knowledge of all the different drums and electronics. Great video, great interview.
He was nice and respectful but it still wasn’t enough for me. He’s standing next to a living god. He isn’t humble enough and it was uncomfortable to watch. I know, gfms
Thank you Danny for everything you've ever done for music. I don't know where'd Id be without Tool. Has helped me get through the darkest times and still continues to do so.
Such a friendly giant, I hope he lives a long joyous life. He and Tool together have certainly brought me joy I’ll never truly be able to repay.
I’m also curious how often he needs to get new cymbals due to breaks while touring!!
Most humble GOAT ever.
Came here from the Justin Chancellor rig rundown on another channel. For a couple of superheroes Danny and Justin are two of the most humble musical Gods I have ever seen. And what a rhythm section they make! Awesome video!
Danny is the man. Such a great guy!
A humble genius.
When he said “10,000 days” I did the math and it’s 27.4 years which is almost exactly how old I am 🤯
That guy is the reason I proudly play Paiste signature cymbals!
It’s like Christmas every time a new DC video comes out ♥️
First Justin now Danny - hopefully Adam will talk about his gear next.
My favorite drummer right there. Him and Tim Alexander know what's up
That snare sound is brutal!!
This dude keeps interrupting danny, wtf
I know I hate people like that. They shouldn't interview people if they aren't gonna let them talk
There’s another drummer has his big school Steve something has UA-cam same thing can’t shut his damn mouth on his interviewing people
What I love about Danny the most, is how much fun he had just jamming with that high school band at that dinner party. Let's you know he's a solid human
It's insane how good those electronic drums sound. They sound like real drums
danny is always so cordial and nice in interviews.
